DESCRIPTION​

The creatively named Planetary Defender - often shortened to simply the Planetary - is a low-cost utility starfighter produced by the SoroSuub Corporation. Marketed primarily to planetary militias and corporate security forces, it has never garnered the sales figures of more prestigious models, but has nevertheless gained a following and has continued to be among the company's most consistent sellers for well over a century now.

The Planetary is a simple design, a cigar-shaped fuselage mated to a pair of straight wings at the rear, with small engine pods on the wingtips, below the fuselage and at the rear. Despite the large number of drive units, top speed is a miserly 90 MGLT, with at least decent maneuverability. Armament consists of twin medium laser cannons in the fuselage, as well as a pair of 3-shot concussion missile launchers. Early models of the Planetary were not equipped with a hyperdrive, although modern examples have a class 2 drive, and most older ones have been retrofitted.

The Planetary's party trick is its twin-seat capacity. The crew consists of a pilot, copilot and astromech droid; when not necessary, the copilot can be replaced by a single passenger. This, along with the ship's 100 kilogram cargo capacity, has made the type popular with express passenger charter and courier services.

In general, the Planetary Defender is used by its target audience, although low-rent mercenaries and small-time pirates have discovered the type as well.

LEGALITY​

Restricted. Planetary Defenders are starfighters, and despite their obsolescence they are still subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.
