Padawan Tournaments

Hi guys,

I've been thinking about this idea since I saw it in the Sith thread, but implementing a type of Padawan tournaments for our apprentices could be fun and beneficial to training.

Me and Bac were talking a little over MSN; this would be between padawans, possibly more than just a two man duel, and, if the apprentice has a master and wins it could count towards their readiness out of character (while IC the Jedi would not use that as a gauge, we can OOC to judge writing ability and combat progression, etc.), while if they are master-less these tourneys can be used to draw in prospective masters like in canon. This could be useful to prove one's self as an initiate since it looks like the padawan count will always outnumber our amount of eligible masters. That was always a problem last timeline, and this idea could at least partially help to reduce that.

Feedback? Ideas? Thoughts?

I like it. We just need to make sure to emphasize, IC, that this is merely for training purposes and to improve one's skill rather than actually besting an opponent to up your own standing like the Sith would do.

Awesome Idea, it would be a good little way of improving fighting RPing as well, which quite a few users lack skill in.

I really like this idea! Considering that I was planning on proposing a tourny for just blade skill, so I can hand pick some padawans or knights to train as my inner circle, I think this is a great idea.

Plus, tournaments are always a popular thing.

Like Bac said though, we need to make it clear that winning isn't what matters here, otherwise we get the same problem the grand tournaments always have, they drag to a halt because people want deperately to not lose.


Oh! And whilst we're on the topic of training, it as good a time as any to point out that I think the training guidelines are very unclear. I get that there is now an emphasis on non-traditional training activities, but it isn't immediately obvious that there is still an amount, however small, of traditional 1 on 1 training.

Basically, I feel that the guidelines could be clearer on that account. Also, perhaps they should point out that training and specialisation should occur on the temple board most suited for it?

Eg, fighters go to the Will of the Force, force users go to Tython, diplomats to Coruscant.

Just that as it stands, we have literally all of them (in their profiles and the one RP) thinking they're on Coruscant, when really they would have been taken to Tython.

Definitely something worth clarifying, Kit. I don't think it'll take a lot to put the emphasis on traditional training, only a couple of sentences or so.

Yeha, that's what I was thinking, I just didn't want to get messing around with it if I was the only one that thought it.

And yeah, we talked about setting one up last night, but neither of us got around to it. Its definitely something we should do though, get the ball rolling and whatnot.

I'm planning on starting a group training thread on my shiny new ship later on today, teaching basic combat stuffs to any Padawans or knights that want to learn it.

I'll probably be putting up an alternate Jedi Knight for myself to help with training and also to give myself a character that focuses on lightsaber combat over the Force since I haven't gotten a chance yet, I'm hoping to join you, Kit.

Oh, and whilst we're discussing training, perhaps we could have a thread to announce group training sessions? I was just going to post that I would be running one tonight, but I thought it might be good to have all the information collected in one place, where we could just post saying we were running one etc.
