Unbelievable! Anton Sai shook his head in disbelief, marching alongside three other marines on rubble strewn street. It had been a few rotations since the Sith bombing on Ranger Headquarters and the cost of the devastation was still being estimated. Keeping a grip on the blaster rifle Anton stayed within reach of his comrades while they continued their patrol.

Leading in front was a Duros gray combat fatigues armed with a light repeater. “Stay sharp people.” He said in a reminder to the rest of the fire team. Anton who was on the left hand side, asked.

“Permission to speak corporal?”

“Granted. What’s on your mind, Sai?”

Pausing briefly the nineteen year old then said. “Okay then where are the police? So far we barely seem any in this area. I thought they would be out in full force in a time like this.”

Sighing Corporal Zim Mas answered.

“Well Sai the simple answer is they’re stretched thin covering other sectors. Especially after suffering heavy casualties from the bombing. Plus it doesn't help that this entire planet is one giant city.”

Anton winced at the very thought though it made sense. Subsequently the fire team made a right turn from a street corner. Corporal Mas then added.

“So that’s where we come in. To give the cops a hand until ordered otherwise. Does that answer your question Private?”

“Aye Corporal.” Anton acknowledged before an orange airspeeder with engines roaring flew overhead. A whistle in the rear followed. “That was a nice design.”

“Durren, keep your eyes on the ground level. You can proposal marriage to that speeder later.” Corporal Mas ordered, causing an embarrassed Ric Durren to focus back on the task at h d. Anton and his orange Natolouan comrade Ysse Dastill shared a mutual smile of amusement.

To say that Coruscant had been in shambles following the bombing on the Sector Rangers' HQ was an understatement.

Following her buir's advice to take a job on the planet as additional (and temporary) security detail patrolling the HQ's perimeters so they could gather further information about the attacks, Reiel had been quick to sign up a sort-of conscript looking for volunteers and thus found herself wandering along with a small team of Marines amid the rubble still strewn all over the place.

No, not wandering, she corrected herself. Patrolling. And the young Mandalorian would only be here for a few days – her buir had been offered a job regarding a certain Chandrilan Senator, something he said they would need to discuss once her contract was over.

The Marine on the lead – a male Cathar whose name she had not bothered getting – raised a fist, ordering the group to halt. He then motioned for them to spread out, providing more scope for coverage in their patrol. Reiel was glad to comply – she had already been the butt-end of a bad joke which ended up with a fresh-faced Marine clutching his, ah... family jewels in pain. She might not be blessed in the height department, but a powerful and swift kick of her booted foot on a spot between his legs would be enough to remind the guy that she was not to be made fun of.

Breaking away from the group and taking the path before her, Reiel kept one gloved hand close to her DE-10 Blaster Pistol and the other to a vibroknife while she pushed forward. The silence was only broken by the sound of airspeeders flying overhead every now and again. She had not met any trouble so far, no enemy stragglers popping out from the shadows. Despite the dreadful state of the headquarters and the streets, the place seemed almost peaceful. Quiet.

Reiel checked the street thoroughly, entering abandoned establishments to check for either enemy presence or concealed explosives for a follow-up attack. Lifting the commlink to her mouth – to its general direction more like, given her helmet being on the way – she reported her status to the lead Cathar.

Damn, he reminded her of the Ranger she met on Corellia. She could only hope that Sector Ranger Arah Tizun had been away or offworld when the bombing and subsequent attack occured.

Back outside on the street, Reiel continued her patrol, headed further away from where she came from. A bloody hand with a tattered sleeve trapped under the rubble caught her attention when she made a left turn from a street corner – another casualty who was yet to be found and given a proper burial. She wondered if the hand's owner was that of a Ranger or a civilian.

One way to find out, then.

Going down on one knee, Reiel gently took the hand in her gloved ones, inspecting whatever she could with the dirt and blood on the way.
