DESCRIPTION

Ni Ceta Tengaanar, (lit. I kneel display) is a practice of the more traditional underworld forms of apology. It is unclear whether the practice came from the warlords of Mandalore of old or the ruthless depths of Hutt space. Both will likely refute the other's claim despite the practice itself being quite ruthless.

Ni Ceta Tengaanar, often simply refered to as Ni Ceta with the appropriate context, is the practice of self mutilation when a subordinate is attempting to display their remorse for failure to a superior. Most commonly this is done with removing a digit though some species may remove a head tail or other significant appendage. The individual who has failed in a certain action most often starts with their smallest digit and cuts it off themselves in front of the superior to whom they have failed.

The offense will be so great that multiple cuts are required. The boss, or lord, will have the offender remove up to two digits. Some cases are more extreme and even more gruesome. When some non humans have less than five digits other body parts deemed of equivalent importance are selected.

Because combat pragmatism is a key portion of the Mandalorian life style these lost body parts are permitted to be substituted with cybernetic replacements for mission efficiency. However the person bearing the stigmata is expected to mark their armor with the appropriate markings on their outer layer, letting others know of their shame and failure to their superior(s). In every day Mandalorian life the bearer of the stigmata is expected to show their loss of digits or equivalent body part openly and not substitute it.

The effect of this tradition was kept in practice between gang bosses and Alor alike not just to keep their own organizations in check and honest but also as a means of keeping peace between one another. If one hot headed warrior wrongs an enemy warrior in a personal dispute it was far easier for one of them to sacrifice a digit then for two clans to go to war against one another. Sometimes a warrior will regret the actions they have commited and see the harm they have caused their comrades. As such, it is justified to represent that harm by removing their own digit.

The significance of losing a digit may be lost on some but for ancient Mandalorians it is major. Before cybernetics were common place one was unable to replace lost limbs or body parts. Losing a finger, even the pinky, was significant because it would impact how strong their grip on their bes'kad or blaster. As such it is one of the firm talking points among historians as to why the tradition of self mutilation is likely Mandalorian in origin.

I believe this will add some foundation to a justice system to the old ways of Mandalorians and also some criminal underworld aspects that can be explored in future roleplays. Originally posted last TL.
