Something I'd been thinking. In the new timeline, do we know if anyone will be allowed to start their characters at a higher rank, say Knight or Master? If not, then we'll all be starting off from scratch as Padawan's loose in the universe with no one to teach them. Plus all the new people that could potentially join the site once they see the movie.

My question, if we decide to maybe promote a few of us active members now, would it be effective for me to maybe try and promote my two characters to a higher rank? It wasn't something I was concerned with doing at the moment but I got to thinking I don't want to be left out of anything. I have Aeryun Toph who's a Padawan in the order and Aubrey Fox who's an Acolyte to the Sith. I feel they could both probably pass the test, so to speak, and are ready to move up. Should I try to do that anyway or is there any real point since the timeline will be closing?

The brand new timeline will require new characters was well from what I understand. That being said sense you have been here for a while you are not new to the site so I think your next force user should be able to start at the rank of a least Knight/Crusader. But that may be up to the discretion of the FL's when the new timeline goes live.

That's why I'm asking. Are they going to pick only from the people actually already promoted or simply by how long they've been active? Should I bother trying to promote Aeryun and Aubrey

I assume the rules for applying your character for a higher rank would be much the same as they are now.

People can apply to have their character(s) accepted into a faction, or even as Indies, at Knight/Crusader level with approval from the respective FL's. In that regard, I believe the decision can actually be reliant on a few factors: "seniority" (for lack of a better word, I'm not implying that senior members are given preferential treatment), activity and effort. Even a relatively new member could potentially be granted the opportunity to play a Knight/Crusader level character if there was significant proof in their character's profile that they are capable of properly writing such a character without abusing the privilege.

As far as I know we don't know who the leadership for the main factions will even be. It's entirely possible that the admin team chooses to mix up the leadership. So it's rather pointless to ask since we don't know who will be FLs/AFLs and the ones picked may have different feelings about such things.

That said I already spoke to @Ben and @Raydo about this topic and we seemed to agree that we'd allow players with characters who are at knight and master level to create a character at that level since we'd need masters and knights to start. And I'm sure if someone feels like they've put in the effort they can apply and the leadership will undoubtedly take such an application seriously. This is just assuming the leadership teams remain mostly the same.

Basically, what @Riley said. Hope this helps.

So I should probably go ahead and sign my characters up for a promotion now?

The last timeskip we had, some characters were notified about being promoted by the AFL's, without their having put in for promotion. I'm not sure if Masters referred those characters, or if a chosen few reviewed everyone.

I hope you are having fun on the site. I doubt its going to go away any time soon.
