LOCATION: Port, Mos Espa, Tatooine
GOAL: Trade Sojourn Shuttle for Wayfarer Medium Transport

oie-png.png
The Sojourn Shuttle began its descent into Tatooines atmosphere, the kinetic energy causing the hull to heat up immensely. From the outside it looked as if its durasteel plating was bright white as temperatures heated its shell. The Jedi Knight piloted the ship while the R3 astromech droid calculated landing coordinates and trajectories. Rennek switched the comm to local channels, specifically the port 'authorities' on Mos Espa "This is Sojourn-31 requesting permission to dock" his transmission was almost instantly replied, confirming his inquiry. Unlike other ports in the Galaxy, Mos Espa ran on a discreet understanding and did not require registration codes. This 'service' came at an extra cost usually amounting in credits despite the fact his paperwork was legitimate. He didn't complain though and after a few decades of patrolling the Arkanis sector he'd grown accustomed to the desert Capitals silent agreements.

The Shuttle landed in bay 12-A, the boarding ramp dropping to the duracrete floor as vents expelled excess pressure from its hoses, creating a somewhat steamed atmosphere in the enclosed dock. The Watchman unfastened his harness and secured his armor and helmet, a ritual he'd incorporated every time he landed on the lawless Planet. Tatooine had a interstellar reputation of being one of the most dangerous places in the Galaxy, yet despite its alignment it attracted individuals from all walks of life. He walked out of the cockpit and made his way to the back of the ship where Dasi had made temporary residence in the escape pod, her handful of possessions lining the small vessel with a makeshift mattress strewn across the seats. It looked far from comfortable but he commemorated her patience as they traveled the sector over the last month. In that time he'd also been contacted by the Jedi Temple on Ajan Kloss with a request that both surprised and annoyed him. He'd been instructed (almost ordered) to return to the Temple and assist in tutoring the steady rise of Padawans that were flocking to the Order. Consequently this meant he'd have to permanently reside within its walls, leaving his life and duty as a Watchman behind. As per his running record with the Councils request he denied, stating his duties within the Arkanis sector were more important to the Jedi than training new recruits like some faculty member. His regular disagreement was one of the contributing factors he'd not been promoted to Master and his role as a Watchman was the reason why he'd failed to take an apprentice under his wing. It wasn't because he was incapable of teaching, simply the Arkanis sector was riddled with danger and he could not guarantee the safety of a Padawan.

His tune changed as he got older and slower, his natural resilience being replaced with armor plating. Rennek also needed to future proof his role in the case of his untimely death, and the best was practical learning. So the Jedi Knight made a compromise. Much like his apprenticeship, he would take more than one Padawan as his student IF the Council allowed him to continue his Watch. As expected they were reluctant, but with the ratio of learners outweighing teachers they had little choice but to accept. They were also aware that his methods as a Jedi were questionable, however, there was little doubt on his loyalty to the Order, or his effectiveness at his position. And so, in the space of a month he'd acquired two Padawans, causing him to feel foolish as he'd advised Dasi that their arrangement was informal. The look on her face when he told her she was now officially his apprentice said it all. But Rennek couldn't falter the decision. She had come a long way in a short space of time and although he'd never admit it, she'd grown on him. He almost forgot what it was like to have company outside of droids and scum. Jaered was a different story, and the Jedi Knight knew little of him or his background outside the information given to him by the Order. All he knew was he originated from Naboo, and they'd had little time to converse on the travel to Tatooine.

Rennek threw a pair of light cloth wraps and ponchos towards Dasi and Jaered while he slipped his armor and helmet on, his voice muffled by the inactive auditory scrambler "Put these on. If you don't already know, Tatooines binary stars reek havoc on your skin and can reach high temperatures by noon. Also, conceal your lightsabers. Folk around here belong to the Cartels and they'd sell us out for a round of ale at the cantina." He made his way down the ramp after everyone was ready, casually making his way towards port officer who processed payments and saw to the upkeep of all landed vessels. Rennek slid enough credits to cover the expense, plus an added extra. He spoke to the officer in Huttesse, his Correlian accent lost in the dialect "Fill it tonka um get do droida tah run do diagnostic. Send je doe information on this frequency"

The Watchman exited the large plated gates and into the heart of the bustling desert metropolis, Mos Espa "We're going to see a local trader who may have a ship for us. As ideal as the Sojourn is, its far too small to accommodate our needs."

Leaving to join the Jedi Order was the first time Jaered had even been off of his home planet of Naboo. To begin with, it seemed like such an exciting adventure – see new planets, new species, become more attuned with the force – and all that was true, yet he never thought he would miss home so much. In his whole life, he rarely spent too long away from his parents and now they were lightyears away. No longer could he see the luscious green fields and feel the warmth of the sun on his skin. Now, he was in a shuttle in the vast, lifeless depths of space. He was not going to allow that to distract him or lower his spirits at all, though. After all, he now had a Master that he needed to impress.

He had only been with Master Vaal for a short amount of time and, hence, not really gotten to know him much. Another padawan had also been assigned to him who seemed to have been travelling with him for a short time before Jaered’s arrival. She seemed nice enough, if a little quiet. Jaered could understand and respect that. After all, he was not one to say much himself, often taking a back seat to listen and observe.

Jaered braced himself as the shuttle made its descent on to the sandy planet. His first time in a ship had made him nervous; so many things could go wrong and then that would be it. Over time, he became more accustomed to it and his mind did not race with worrying thoughts as much. Controlling his breathing helped with the situation, calming himself.

As the vehicle came to an easy halt, the Jedi Knight arose from the controls and donned his armour. Catching the cloak that was thrown at him, Jaered draped it around himself, concealing the saber as instructed. His time at the temple had developed his skill with the blade but he still did not trust his ability. His movement was still a little clunky and he hoped that there would not be any need of it on this planet. Though, his Master adorning full armour and his helmet did not seem promising.

Exiting the ship, he slid the hood over his head, obstructing the suns from his eyes. The Jedi was right – it really was hot. The streets were alive with many people, meandering in and out of each other. There were also many animals that Jaered couldn’t help but observe; large reptilian-like creatures and shaggy horned beasts. Despite everything around him, Jaered kept up. He couldn’t help but agree that a larger ship was needed. After all, Dasi was sleeping in an escape pod and now they had an extra passenger.

Jaered held his tongue, not wanting to say anything that might offend his new Master. For all he knew, the ship was very dear to him and it was a big sacrifice giving it up. He turned to Dasi, giving her a small, half-smile. He felt so awkward in a strange place with people he didn’t know yet. Then again, these were people he was going to spend a lot of time with so it would become easier with time.

Dasi was leaning against a bulkhead in her little escape pod when she felt the descent to the planet. She hopped to her feet and wandered over to the cockpit, slipping into the co-pilots seat to watch. She pulled the harness down to strap herself in, she loved this part. Sitting back she looked out with the force, trying to get a sense of the world beneath her. After her... adventure on Corellia she had been sure to study the world beneath her better. Two suns and apparently incredibly hot. At the very least she wasn't going to freeze to death. As they flew over the dunes to their destination Dasi glanced over at her no longer apparently just babysitter but master. She had almost jumped with joy when he had informed her of her selection.

As the ship set down the young Padawan headed to her little comfy escape pod to grab her things. Lightsaber, commlink. Just the standard equipment she was expecting to need. She decided to dress light, wearing the million layers of Jedi clothing did not seem like a smart move. She also pulled on her boots, she'd rather not wear them but she would also prefer not to burn her feet on the sands. Confident in her equipment and attire the Togruta headed over to the ramp where she found a light poncho forced into her hands.

Dasi was blind, but even she knew she was going to look ridiculous in a poncho. Regardless she put on the sand colored poncho and she pulled up the hood over her montrals. She unhooked her lightsaber from her belt and clipped it again behind her back, where it would remain out of sight. Nevertheless she was going to follow her new master's orders. The young Togruta looked over at her fellow Padawan Jaered with a look that said they should never talk about this again. She had been surprised when her Master had also pulled this one along. She didn't mind, she just hadn't expected him. He had seen fit to leave her alone most of the time so she was still unsure if she actually liked him or not. He seemed pleasant enough.

She looked around as they started to exit the ship and stopped as the wall of heat actually stopped her. All of a sudden she was glad for the poncho her master had given her. If the ambient heat was like this the two suns were going to be even worse. She mustered up the courage to keep walking and stepped out of the shade of the ship. If just the heat had been a wall the sun felt like it had been magnified and focused on her exclusively. All of a sudden Dasi was ready to leave this planet. As her master discussed their plans she nodded. She didn't mind the escape pod, but the ship was still a tad small for three people.

The two Padawans followed the Knight with Rennek taking point, the small group slaloming around the heavy influx of locals and visitors as they walked the main street exiting Mos Espa port. If it was the first time the two younger Jedi visited this desert Planet they'd notice the variety of sentient life, with lifeforms ranging from the native Jawa which cloaked their small frames in seemingly eternal robes, to more familiar faces which were abundant in the Galaxy. On the side of the footpaths were numerous merchants pedaling their wares, shouts bellowing from their stalls in promise of discounts and high quality items. One such individual saw the armored Jedi and ran from his table with blaster in hand, his puckered Rodian lips demanding that Rennek try out his weapon. He held out a hand in decline "Not interested friend. If you have a spare ship hidden in that small tent I'll be obliged to purchase-" knowing all too well the impossibility of having a vessel in his stock the Watchman carried on, prompting his two Padawans to promptly follow. Without looking behind him he addressed the pair "Don't get suckered by these guys. Most of their wares are salvaged from wreckage pilfered from the Jawas and although the prices are acceptable, the quality is not. Many a hunter or smuggler have lost their lives to failing equipment purchased from these merchants" his eyes trailed towards a group of stands that specialized in cuisine "And don't eat the mystery meat. Its heavily seasoned bantha rump. You can guess what happens when meat sits out in the twin suns for days on end. After our business is concluded I'll take you to a cantina."

The group trailed off the main path and down an enclosed road surrounded by living quarters constructed by hardened sand and stone, the residents comprising mainly of slaves purchased by richer locales. Despite the New World Alliances stance on slavery, their reach did not quite extend as far as the Outer Rim Territories and the archaic practice still existed. It was something that deeply disturbed the Knight but he understood the logistics of attempting the free all those bound in metaphorical chains. He could sense the unease from his two apprentices, offering words to comfort them "The Galaxy is large, and although we hold great power we are still bound by the reality that we are merely individuals. For centuries Tatooine has thrived on slave trade, and equally authorities both local and abroad have attempted to shut down the practice. Sometimes they are successful, but the underworlds reach extends further than we know. Know this young ones. Not every life can be saved. No matter how hard one tries."

The end of the path led them to what seemed a humble abode consisting of the same surrounding materials in its build. What differentiated this building from the rest was its size and the colored canopies which sheltered its patrons from the blazing binary suns. Within its doors emerged a dark skinned Klatooinian with the trademark overbite and thick brow associated with its species. As soon as the alien spotted Rennek and his retinue he approached with a smile, extending one arm out to clasp the Jedis forearm. Rennek returned the gesture and both embraced with a light chuckle escaping their lips.

"Ahhh, Master Vaal. What brings you to my humble shop? Are you in need of another speeder? Or maybe something better than that rubbish you call armor?" the Klatooinian released a hearty bellow, tapping the Corillean on the shoulder, his muscle arms bearing a heavy weight on his joint. It was good to see Ilba in good spirits, and by the looks of things his business had done well since his last visit.
"You sold me this armor if I recall correctly, and I quote 'a suit that would withstand a thousand strikes'. Or do I remember wrong?" Ilba blushed accordingly, his broad arms reaching behind his head while his hand massaged the back of his cranium. "No, this time I'm after a ship, one big enough for me and my companions" the Watchman shifted his head to the side, nodding at Dasi and Jaered behind him, their features concealed by the hooded ponchos he'd insisted they wear before leaving. Ilba peered over his shoulder, noting his company "This is the first time I've seen you with companions Vaal. What happened? Solitude finally caught up with you? And what of that fancy Shuttle you come and go in?"
"Something like that. It suited me when I was alone. Now I'm forced to seek alternative transport as I dislike the idea of being confined to shared living spaces."
"Fair. It just so happens I've acquired a transport since our last engagement. Wayfarer Class." Rennek raised an eyebrow under his helmet, knowing all to well the stigma that was associated with this type of vessel. It was famously piloted by the more shadier groups of society, usually smugglers who enjoyed the detachable cargo bay in case they were vetted by intergalactic authorities Where did you get it?
"Jawas" almost immediately the Knight replied "No. What else do you have?" The Klantooinian laughed once again, signalling for the trio to follow him inside his shop.

His shop was modest in construction but the wares he contained varied from weapons to droids, though also displaying the various ship and parts he had at his disposal. At the back of the building was a sliding door which led to the large yards holding the more sizeable stock "Ahh Master Vaal. Are you still sour about your last trade with Jawas? I remember informing you to exercise caution. It's your own fault for underestimating the critters" the Knight could be heard snickering under his helmet, a hint of distaste echoing through the Force which would no doubt be detected by his Padawans. "Its hard to exercise caution when you've been shot with an ion cannon" another bellow from Ilba, which echoed within the sealed walls. "What kind of revenue do you have at your disposal?" Rennek pulled out a holoprojector from his cache, placing it on the table and pushing a button. A light blue hue shaped in the Sojourn Class Shuttle shined from its emitter, its form rotating slowly to show its full shape. Ilba placed his broad hand on his chin, stroking it slowly "I was under the impression this was exclusive to your Order? Regardless of its rarity, this barely covers half the expense. After all, I am running a business"

Rennek sighed in objection "Your business would be burnt to the ground by now. It only stands because I helped you" Ilba nodded in agreement "And for that I am in your debt. But if I accept this exchange I may as well burn my establishment. I'll end up losing credits on this deal. But-" the alien made his way towards the back of the counter, pulling a datapad from a container and sliding it over the bench top "If you could deliver me THIS, well, I'd be in a much better position to accept this arrangement. What say you, Master Jedi?"

Jaered watched the Rodian as the trio walked past, clearly discouraged that his sale was unsuccessful. Even if Master Vaal had not said, it seemed like buying things from flimsy tents in the middle of the street was a bad idea. Especially when it came to weaponry. A person needs to rely on their armament in dire circumstances so it needs to be reliable. The idea of warm meat festering in the heat of the binary suns also put Jaered off even considering any of the goods on offer. Though, food from a cantina did sound good. “I could do with a good meal right about now…” he accidentally slipped out quietly, blushing slightly when he realised it was not in his head.

The infrastructure was very different from the sorts of buildings he was used to – small huts with domed rooves made from hardened sand. Jaered supposed the supplies were scarce in such a desolate landscape and this was likely their only option. He could also tell that these people were slaves, a practice abolished from the majority of the galaxy, but the words of his Master confirmed his suspicions. He felt pained that it was still an issue and yet helpless to do anything about it. Surely with the growing Jedi order, more watchmen could be placed on the planet and finally stomp it out. It just was not fair. It was final: Jaered did not like Tatooine one bit.

Reaching their desired destination, the trio came to a building with canvas protruding from above the entrance, casting a shadow over the doorway. The owner emerged from the entrance, welcoming the Jedi who he clearly knew. Jaered bowed slightly as he was introduced to the shopkeeper. He could not recall ever meeting someone of his species before. Pondering, he followed into the shop, looking around at what was on offer. Jaered couldn’t help but turn and look at the parts and scrap that lined the walls. Picking up a small metal part that seemed to be off of a ship of some sort, he turned it around to inspect it before realising that the others had moved on. He gently placed it back where he found it and caught up to the others.

Outside was clearly where the larger stock was stored: speeders, engine parts and a droid here and there. Admittedly, Jaered was no expert of ships or machinery. He had no idea what most of the things were. To him, a lot of it seemed like junk (which may have been a good guess considering everything else that seemed to be sold on the streets). His eyes still wandering over the merchandise, Jaered could not help but turn his attention to the datapad the shopkeeper had pushed towards the Jedi, subtly peering over his shoulder to try and have a peek at what was being displayed on it.

The young Togruta was spending most of her willpower trying to avoid going from stall to stall seeing what everyone had. She watched as a Rodian approached her Master who immediately waved him off. She was distracted from her Master's discussion on avoiding getting suckered by the Rodian moving to her as a potential new sucker. He held the blaster before her and took aim with it speaking something she really didn't understand. Her answer was to look up so he could see her eyes. Seeing she was blind the Rodian stopped in his tracks and stare as she walked by, she gave him a small smile and a shrug.

As they moved further into the city the Jedi started looking around as she smelled food. She was about to ask her Master about it when he warned them. Her appetite quickly turned around. She could wait until they got back to the ship to eat. She started to think of better meals back at the temple to get her mind off of whatever the mystery meat was when they began to pass the slave quarters. Once again she was about to speak up and Master Vaal headed her off once again as if he knew she was about to speak. She frowned as he told her not every life could be saved. "How can we say we tried though?" She looked down at the ground as she said this, trying to avoid any potential glare from her master.

Soon they came to their destination, a hut seemingly indistinguishable from everything else around them. She watched as a man exited the hut and approached her master. They quickly began business talking that she had almost no interest in and she stepped inside after them. As she stepped through the doorway and out of the oppressive sunlight she pulled her hood down. She could feel the cloth catching on her montrals and she stopped before she pulled slightly more carefully. This hood wouldn't last another day...

As her Master continued to talk business the young Padawan wandered through the shop looking at the contents. As she passed by a speeder that appeared to be older then she was she let one hand wander to the handle bar, wondering what it would be like to use it to travel. She picked up a datapad with details for a ship for sell, not big enough for them but still interesting nonetheless. She wasn't sure how expensive it actually was however and placed it back down. She was on the other side of the room when the shopkeeper brought out the datapad for a job. Her curiosity peeked she expanded out with the force, trying to see every detail.

The Jedi Knight browsed the contents of the datapad, his eyebrow raising as he scanned what was being asked of them. A sigh escaped his lips which was then manifested by the audio output of his helmet, his attention turning towards his two Padawans. Over the last few weeks he was able to determine the skills and aptitude of the blind Togruta and he was sure she could handle what would be asked of her. His newly elected apprentice was still fresh and Rennek did not have the time to understand his full capabilities. Regardless of the fact, they had both endured the basic modules required for every initiate to ascend to the rank of Padawan putting them a cut above the average person.

[Mission Difficulty Dice Roll - 45] - "No. If this is your price then you can keep the freighter. We will look elsewhere" the Jedi Knight placed the datapad on the bench, giving Ilba a nod in farewell before turning towards the door. He took a few steps before the Klantooinian spoke up, ensuring all members of the party heard "And where will you look Master Jedi? The deal I'm offering can't be matched in Tatooine, that you have my word. Sit down, please. The details are not as bad as you read" Rennek shot Ilba a menacing look, one that could not be seen behind his helmet but the echo he left in the force could be felt by his Padawans. His augmented voice spoke out through the audio speaker, giving him and added air of disagreement "Don't patronize me old friend. You want us to raid an established Hutt stronghold-" he'd barely finished his sentence before the alien added to the conversation, attempting to clarify any misunderstanding "You give the slug too much credit. He may be a Hutt but hes a nobody, a distant cousin four times removed. Its rumored the head of the Cartel grows weary of his relatives ambition and seeks his demise. Any retribution you worry coming your way is unwarranted. You can trust me on this.."

The Watchman stood still, his back still to his old acquaintance. Despite the pitted feeling in his stomach he knew Ilba was right. He was disillusioned if he thought he'd be able to procure a vessel suitable enough for the needs of his new retinue, especially without traveling half the Galaxy. And Rennek was uncomfortable with traveling for that extended period of time in the small Sojourn Shuttle, and he was sure the younger members felt the same. The shuttle served its purposes when he was by himself as it provided sufficient space for a lone operator, however, the needs of his Padawans had to be considered. They were with the Watchman of the Arkanis Sector and it was known that he'd spent most of his time abroad, returning to the comforts of the temple rarely, and only when required. Another sigh. "I want to hear the details from your mouth Ilba. What exactly does this Hutt have that you want, and why is it so important that you're willing to anger him? No doubt you've had this on the cards for awhile. So why now?" The middle aged Klantooinian grimaced and offered for the trio to sit on the circular table in his shop. He prompted his protocol droid to fetch refreshments before taking his seat. He grabbed the holo projector and laid it in the middle of the table, pushing its activation to reveal a blue hued map of the stronghold. From what Rennek could gather it was an old establishment with roots that dated back before the empire of old. Despite its dark history the Jedi Knight admired the sturdiness of its construction. Apparently a lower caste of Hutt had claimed the building as his own, and subsequently the surrounding town.

mos-shuuta-teemos-palace.jpg

Ilba pointed at what was labelled the 'Gladiator Cells', now re purposed as holding units "This is where you will find the commodity-" he was cut off immediately by the Knight, who raised his hand in silence "If this information is correct, your 'commodity' is located in a prison cell. What aren't you telling me Ilba. And be very frank. I've traveled for days without refreshment and paired with my age I'm starting to get frustrated. Now speak." The Klantooinian apparently received the message loud and clear and dropped all followings acts of visage "It's my daughter. She joined the slugs retinue 2 cycles ago despite my objections. Apparently he was paying top credit for skilled personnel who knew their way around a blaster and with the perks he was offering she couldn't resist. About three months ago I received a transmission from an intermediary advising of her incarceration. The silly girl tried pocketing an item and she was caught. I don't have to tell you what the Hutts do to thieves, especially those within their ranks. "

mos-shuuta-streets-expanded-small.jpg

Rennek stared at the map, then swiped to the next data file containing the surrounding area, more commonly known as Mos Shuuta. "There are only three of us Ilba! What kind of impact do you think we will make?" the alien gazed around the table, looking at each individual "I've heard what your kind can do, and I've seen what YOU can do Vaal-" Rennek once again raised his hand in protest, demanding silence "Lifting a speeder off your broken body and removing a few bandits are a lot different from taking on an armed group of Cartel members, low borne or not. What you're asking is beyond my mandate, and quite frankly suicide." He looked at his two Padawans who had barely said a word since. He would open the floor to their suggestions and council.

"I may be your Master but your input is just as valuable as mine. What do you think?"

Hutt stronghold? Even Jaered knew they were bad news. The Hutts were notorious gangsters throughout the galaxy and not people you should cross paths with. It seemed that if they were to carry out this raid, his fear of having to put his saber skills to the test would be realised. Jaered sat across the table from the shopkeeper, inspecting his expressions as he spoke. The whole thing seemed off to Jaered; could this vender really be trusted? It seemed the Jedi had a past with him but who could really say how much that accounted for.

He inspected the holographic blueprints of the stronghold as a droid brought over drinks for the guests. Jaered held it intently, though not taking a sip from the cup. If the gladiator cells were their goal, it would not be an easy in and out job. Going through the front gate was surely not going to work - too many guards and too far to travel through the stronghold. There was no way they would get all the way through unnoticed. A disguise maybe? No, that was bound to fall through somehow.

The only other way in was from the landing pad. Probably not as heavily guarded and a shorter distance for them to infiltrate. The issue was that they would probably be shot down before reaching the pad, especially in the Sojourn. It was known for being a Jedi shuttle and that would not lead to a welcoming party. Could the ship be cloaked perhaps? Maybe the R3 unit could aid their entry? Ideas raced through his head as he tried to plan, though none seemed likely to work. From what Jaered could tell, it was a suicide mission with only three of them. With reinforcements, there was a shred of hope but surely not two inexperienced Padawans tailing their new Master.

It was clear on his face that Jaered was not optimistic about their chances. They did, however, need a ship. “This man’s daughter’s life is at stake and is essentially doomed if we don’t do anything,” he replied without really saying what they should do. If they managed to pull the job off, retrieving Ilba’s daughter would be a lot of leverage when it came to obtaining a ship. The issue was that it was a pretty big if. Jaered decided to keep his ideas of entry to himself. After all, he was no strategist and they all seemed to suck anyway. “What do we know of the Hutt? Is there anything we could use that could perhaps distract him from the fact that we would be uninvited guests?”

Hutts? She had heard the stories about them but had never encountered one. The rumors were probably exaggerated anyways. She stepped away from where she was looking around and headed to the table where the discussions were now taking place. Her master was very unhappy with their current plans, that much she could tell.

She accepted the refreshment from the protocol droid and took a decent gulp before setting it down and placing her full attention on the planning. Apparently the Klatoonian wanted some kind of object from the hutt stronghold? That sounded easy enough for one Jedi let alone three Jedi. Then her master called the shopkeeper out on where the the "commodity" was. A person would be much harder to retrieve. Something the Klatoonian said set off some kind of alarm for her. "Why would she try to steal?"

Her question aired the young Togruta looked at the map but she only knew how to raid the kitchen at the table, she knew nothing about actually attacking something. Perhaps a direct approach where they attempted to negotiate with the hutt would be better for them? Perhaps subterfuge? She wondered if perhaps they could infiltrate the palace. "We could try infiltrating the palace Master. I could pose as a dancer." At this point she was simply throwing out ideas that wouldn't involve them trying to perform a head on assault.

She sighed as she racked her mind for an answer to the predicament. Even if the Klatoonian was willing to give them the ship at her masters price she still would have wanted to assist him. Someone was in trouble and they had the power to help so they should. "I agree with Jaered master. Someone is in trouble and we have the power to assist them."

The consensus had been made, and unsurprisingly both Padawans opted to follow through with the proposal, whether they understood the need for a new Ship for their future endeavors or the fact someone required their assistance. He understood their mind frame, he too was once in their shoes and eager to use his power to better the Galaxy. He placed both hands either side of his helmet, releasing the mag seal and lifting it from his head revealing his pale skin tone and greying blonde hair. He placed the head piece on the table and his cerulean gaze rested on the three surrounding the circular table. The Protocol droid slid a cold beverage alongside him and he gratefully sipped its contents, a sigh of relief escaping his lips as he savored its slightly bitter taste. Despite the fact that Tatooine was one of the most unbearably hot places he had personally experienced, its residents knew how to subside the hostile environment with a plethora of beverages. "You have your answer old friend, now-" he switched back to the first map, outlining the schematics for the stronghold.

"-lets figure out how we're going to get in." he leaned closer to the projector as he mentally traced the various routes which intersected with one another while keeping a look out for any alternative routes. The Klantooinian answered Jaereds line of inquiry regarding the Hutt in question, his thick accent butchering the Galactic Basic "Zulla the Hutt. As I mentioned earlier, hes a distant relative of the Hutt Cartel whos grown ambitious. There's rumors he's grown unhappy with his station which is one of the main reason he's employed local gun hands who aren't already in his cousins pocket." He shot a glance towards the blind Padawan and shrugged his shoulders "I wasn't informed. But the slug is barely a man and hes trying to make his mark on Tatooine. Who knows how far his pettiness extends." Dasi then mentioned her possible role in the deception in hopes they could avoid open conflict. Almost immediately, without shooting her a glare, Rennek outright protested with a tone of voice not heard of before "Absolutely not! I don't want another repeat of Corellia..." there was a silence which loomed over the room, and an energy which seemed almost stagnant. Dasi had never told her Master about the events on Corellia and he understood why. She had been put in a compromising position, one that any Padawan would find themselves in at least once in their apprenticeship. But he partially felt responsible for those events, and he internally punished himself for not being there in her time of need. Until this day he'd be none the wiser on what unfolded were it not for his connections to the Sector Rangers. He allowed a deep breath of air to fill his lungs, calming himself down before looking her in the eyes, metaphorically it maybe "I appreciate your courage young one. Its one of the reasons I took you under my tutelage. But not in my most desperate moments would I ask you to put yourself in such a compromising position. The Hutts are vile creatures and they treat their dancers like objects. Before the girls are put to the stage I've heard they are initiated in......unspeakable ways" and that was the end of that suggestion.

mos-shuuta-streets-expanded-small.jpg

Jaered inquired about a possible distraction that would aid in their infiltration which prompted Ilba to switch the projector to the second map of Mos Shuutas layout, his dark eyes scanning the blue hologram for possible solutions. This was the problem. He was a simple trader and procurer of goods, not an expert in infiltration and intelligence. That much Rennek knew "The town is under the Hutts control. Nothing goes in or out without his knowing-" the Jedi Knight inspected the map and ran a mental note of different points of entry. Their first barrier was getting inside the electro gate, either directly or through the port. The problem was that they wouldn't be able to enter in the Sojourn as it was famously associated with the Jedi Order. They wouldn't make it within a thousand feet before being shot out of the sky. He pointed towards the two points of entry and looked at his Padawans for their thoughts.

"Staying concealed in a town this size is impossible, infiltrating it more so-" Rennek had a sudden moment of clarity and a thought washed over him like a rapid tide. "-Ilba...what inventory do you have in terms of weapons and armor?" he looked at Dasi and Jaered "And do you have a speeder that'll make the trip from here to Mos Shutta?" he didn't like the plan but with the manpower at their disposal there was little choice. He proposed his plan to his Padawans, stating he had a long running history with the Cartels on Tatooine and he was not the most desirable person on their list "You said the Hutt was gathering hired guns not already in his cousins pocket right? I propose my Padawans play the part in my capture and escort me to the premises as a boon for their employment. I'm sure that alone will get us in the gate, and at the very least it'll get me within the strongholds walls." Once again he opened the floor to their suggestions. If they agreed, albeit reluctantly, he'd progress, hovering his finger above the barracks on the map "Once employed you both will be assigned quarters here. Its close to the stronghold and I assume you'll have privileges to come and go as you please. While in captivity I need you both to ascertain an escape route."

Jaered did not like this one bit.

Not only would the one with the most experience be out of action but he would also have to act as though he were some sort of skilled gunman. There were so many things that could go wrong with the plan and any one of them would result in an early grave. He only hoped that Dasi would have be convincing enough to pull this off as he doubted his own capability. The shop suddenly felt warmer, as though the walls were closing in around them. They were doomed. The sojourn was fine, it could fit them fine, right? He could cope with sleeping in the co-pilot seat or the cold metal floor. No need for any involvement with the Hutt Cartel. He slowed his breathing to calm down before it became too much. No, this was something they had to do. If not for a new ship, then to save the girl’s life.

Jaered’s grip of the cup tightened as his eyes flickered between Ilba and his Master, hoping that somehow a better plan would come to fruition. He knew, however, that it was their only chance at pulling off the operation to retrieve Ilba’s daughter in return for the ship they needed. The plan covered the getting in part but not how to get out – that would be down to them. Doubts weighed heavily on his mind but it was not the impression that Jaered wanted to give for the first excursion with the Jedi and fellow Padawan.

His gulp was somewhat audible as he turned to the Jedi. “If you think this is the best way, we won’t let you down.” His gaze faltered as he lowered his eyes, not able to maintain a confident exterior as he looked at his Master. Instead, he looked at Dasi and tried to convince himself of his words. “Together, we can do it.” …I hope, he thought to himself. Dasi had been doing this sort of thing for a short time now, surely she would provide the confidence they needed…

Dasi flinched as her master yelled at her. Apparently he had figured out about Corellia. Her hand moved up to the back of her head where the small wound she had received was healing. Her master seemed to have more connections then she thought. She listened to him as he mentioned how dancers for the Hutts didn't just dance. She had not been aware of that part.

She listened as Master Vaal described his new plan to get captured by his padawans. She looked at Jaered wondering if he would see the obvious flaw in their masters plan. He seemed to have not noticed the flaw she had noticed instead trying to find confidence from her. She was sorry to disappoint him but she had to point something out. "Master... I don't think the hutts will buy that I am a mercenary... I haven't seen much of the galaxy but I have some doubts to the presence of blind mercenaries. Most helmets do not tend to fit on me either."

She could feel her nerves on edge since she challenged the plan. As much as she wanted her Master's plan to go through Togruta shaped helmets tended to be on the rarer side. She had certainly never seen one. She was worried if anyone saw her face, she had doubts they wouldn't notice she was blind. Most people tended to notice very quickly and a blind Togruta that could handle a blaster well enough to beat a Jedi was probably not going to be a story anyone would buy.

The atmosphere suddenly grew dim and Rennek could sense the unease oozing from his Padawans. Even he admitted the plan had its flaws, but no plan went exactly......to plan. He took Dasis suggestions in consideration and noted the underlying doubt in Jaered, despite his confirmation. Rennek relaxed into his chair, attempting to bring the ambiance down to a more relaxing tone "Look-" he shifted his sights to the Togruta "-under no circumstances can we expose our involvement in this matter. This Planet, its under our watch. And the last thing we need is to make life more difficult for us. What we can all agree on is that the Sojourn is an uncomfortable vessel during long periods of time. Secondly you both have expressed that we cannot walk away from this plight. I am open to ideas Padawans, but our options are limited and I feel time is not on our side." The Jedi Knight was confident that if she wasn't already dead, she would be soon.

He slid the holocron to his Padawans "Transfer a copy to your portable devices. I want you both to commit the schematics to memory. Jaered-" he searched around the shopfront, eyeing up the arrangement of armored clothing "-go to the rack and pick a fitting ensemble. And a couple of blasters. Your lightsabers are not to be seen, but all the same keep them on you." He had noticed Jaered lacked a proper tool of the Jedi, instead still carrying a training lightsaber. While capable of inflicting minor damages, it was practically useless in a fight. Rennek unclipped his from the belt, sliding its physical cross guard hilt
to the Nubian "Hold on to this for the time being. Use it if you must. Give me yours" The Watchman pulled the panel off and used the Force to slightly misalign the crystal. This would cause the emitter to short out, making the blade shutter after it had been ignited.

"There-" his attention turned to Jaered "-a Jedi with a faulty lightsaber is bound to be less threatening, wouldn't you say?" It would seem odd that a pair of 'gun hands' managed to apprehend a Jedi. But if his weapon was believed to be malfunctioning, perhaps the ruse would be believed. After all, a Jedi without his lightsword was an easier target.

He came back to Dasis concerns "A helmets not required. But there are visors present which can conceal your physical blindness. You will do well Padawan. I have faith in you both." He came to a stand and if his Padawans provided no alternative plan or amendment, he'd start packing the speeder with their equipment. There was plenty of time along the way to revise.

Jaered knew that his Master was right. One way or the other, he would have to muster some courage to pull this off – lives were depending on it. Copying the schematics to his device as instructed, he supposed it was good that the barracks were not inside the palace walls. However, that meant that something could be happening to his Master within and he be unaware of it. That would have to be an instance where he would have to trust his connection with the force.

Wandering over to the racks, Jaered looked over all the armour that was on display. His current attire was reminiscent of Jedi and would not be very convincing. The only issue was that it would be unlikely that any of the armour would fit him nicely and would also give the game away. He picked up a breastplate, riddled with dents and blaster marks, though it seemed to be the closest to his form. From looking at it, it seemed to be plastoid but admittedly, he did not know much about armour.

Assembling various plating that looked to be similar, Jaered looked over the blasters on offer, remembering what Master Vaal had said about buying faulty equipment on this planet. He picked two that looked the least damage and wandered back over to the table where a lightsaber was outstretched to him.

Jaered looked at the man to work out if he was joking or not. A Jedi’s saber was a precious thing; something they would build themselves. It held great value to the owner and here was essentially a stranger handing his to him. There was so much responsibility riding on keeping this safe but hopefully, it would not need to be used. Jaered lifted the saber as though it were some beast that would savage him at any chance. “I’m not sure I can accept, Master Vaal,” he admitted.

Pulling back his cloak, Jaered removed his own from his belt and lay it on the table. In comparison, the blade was useless – merely a training saber whilst he honed his skill. He watched as the Jedi altered the crystal within. There was no choice now. It did, however, make their cover story more believing. “I guess you’re right. If this is really happening then this is our best shot.”

Dasi sighed as it seemed the plan was set into motion. They were going to dress like mercenaries or bounty hunters and "capture" their master. She didn't feel comfortable with handing over their Master to a bunch of criminals, especially while telling them he was a captured Jedi. She couldn't be sure what they would do to a known Jedi in their midst. Regardless she pulled her poncho off and placed it on the table before heading over to a rack to find some gear.

She browsed through the racks, grabbing whatever seemed necessary for the illusion to be complete. As she looked through the piles of odds and ends she felt herself gasping as she found the exact thing she had warned everyone likely wouldn't be around. A helmet that would fit her relatively odd shaped head. She picked up the helmet and brought it to her face, seemingly looking into it. The object in question was a flight helmet, specifically for Togruta. Holes at the top existed for her montrals to fit through and hinged bits would allow her lekku to be in place before creating an air tight seal around her face. She shuddered to think about how the helmet of one of her kin had arrived here before she tried it on. An incredibly loose fit for her, whoever had worn it before had been far older then she, with far more impressive montrals and lekku. She took it off and examined it to find straps to reshape softer bits and placed it back on. Much better. She was curious to where the helmet had come from and turned to look at the Nubian who appeared to be slinking away, disappointed she had found it. She thought she could hear grumbling coming from him but ignored it, they had to be convincing.

She continued searching for the rest of her ensemble, she thought back to her former misadventures and what her opponents there had been wearing before she picked out a brown undersuit with dull orange armor plates before moving over to a weapons rack. There she picked up two blaster pistols and associated holsters before slinging a random rifle across her back. She slipped into a back room before popping out again encased in her selections, her lightsaber hidden safely where no one would be able to find it unless they searched very well. She expanded her awareness out to take a good look at herself with the force. She felt like she definitely had the look down but she wasn't entirely sure about her presence. She still felt like a Jedi.

As she walked back to the table she kept shifting her weight around. Armor was heavy and uncomfortable, her master actually wore this on missions? She couldn't understand what would inspire him to do so. "I do not understand how you wear armor Master. I feel like I can barely move." She tried to lift her arms up but the plates refused to let her raise them above shoulder level. "I hope you don't intend on me actually using these blasters master. I wouldn't even know where to begin with them."

Rennek insisted, almost pushing the crossguard hilt into his Padawans hands. He understood the weariness in accepting, if only temporarily, a weapon which was treated as an extension to each individual Jedi. The Watchman wrapped his palm over Jaereds fist as he handed him the lightsaber "This is only temporary young Padawan, and it will ease my mind knowing you have a functional saber on hand if things do go sour while I'm incarcerated. All my possessions will be stripped from me once I'm handed over. I need to know this is going to be in safe hands until my release. Can I count on you?" he gave Jaered a nod, waiting for his answer before turning his attentions towards Dasi. The young Togruta managed to find an ensemble that suited her needs, albeit her choice of attire was slightly too large. A minor detail easily overlooked, and one that wouldn't compromise their upcoming situation.

"It's functional, and it has its uses." In truth Rennek Vaal was getting old. Pushing on 60 standard years, he could feel the fatigue of his body become more cumbersome and his youthful stamina eluded him with each passing age. The armor allowed him to ease the mental burden he felt whilst using the Force, and opted instead to wear armor in his more vulnerable spots than exert himself. Naturally his innate ability in using the Force was above average, despite his rank within the Order. He made up for such short comings in other ways. He slid out of his armor and placed it on the table, looking at Ilba "Keep this in the back. I'll pick it up when I deliver your daughter." He addressed both his Padawans, noticing their unease in the plan "The blaster is for show. If you cant use it-" he threw the stun baton holstered to his side "-then use this. A standard stun baton with multiple charges per cell. This thing has enough power to knock a Wookie off their feet. And here-" he pulled the stun pistol from his thigh holster, throwing it to Jaered "-in case things get hairy. I assume you know how to use one...." it was more a question than a statement, but he had faith in the intuition of his Padawans. He continued his line of dialogue "Stun weapons are our primary, blasters secondary and lightsabers-" he took a deep breath, knowing well that they may have to resort to the option if problems outside the plan presented themselves "-are an absolute last resort. Now, lets get to the speeder. We can sort the remainder of the plan in transit"

He made his way to the speeder, a 4 seated vessel with typical repulsorlift technology. Although it wasn't the fastest model in production, it was built and modified with Desert Planets like Tatooine in mind. He placed his armor in the trunk of the vehicle then jumped in the back "Dasi, you drive. Obstacles to Mos Shutta are minimal and the exercise should keep your mind off any doubts you maybe experiencing. Good practice too. Ill need Jaered to assist in devising an escape route." He had confidence in the blind Padawans ability to pilot a vehicle, more than she probably gave herself credit. In the longer journeys the heat of Tatooines binary suns caused blistering heat and the effects on the sandy surface often manifested mirages to the weary eyed. As she used the Force to see her surroundings he doubted such effects applied to her, but he also did not know the extent of her ability to read a holo projection in detail. A large sand dune was a lot easier to spot than a narrow ventilation shaft on a map. Once his armored Padawans were seated he'd begin devising a plan, with the input of his students. The relationship between learner and teacher was two ways. "When we approach Mos Shutta you'll need to bind me. Take Jaereds training saber with you and claim it as my weapon. Its fault will only increase the stories reliability. Once I'm taken into their custody, you two are going to be on your own until we can find a way to get me, and the asset, out of the hold. So we have a few hours to come up with a plan. Jaered, look at the plans again. See if there is anything I've missed, a ventilation shaft, power converter corridors, anything. Dasi, I'll be relying on your sight once you two are within the walls. You can see things we cannot."

He gave his Master a nod, somewhat in an effort to convince himself also. It did make sense for Master Vaal to not have it on his person since everything would be confiscated; whether Jaered’s were safe hands was a different matter. He collected the stun pistol and slid it into the holster that he had equipped along with the second-hand armour. He had seen blasters used many times – just aim and shoot, surely it was simple. He gave a nod, thankful that there was a non-lethal option. Jaered was yet to take a life and he was not sure how well he would be able to cope with it afterwards.

Jaered bowed to Ilba before following his Master and fellow Padawan to the speeder. He hopped into the seat as Dasi fired up the engines. Master Vaal had had years of experience with this sort of operation, most likely, and Jaered doubted he would have missed anything on the plans. Contemplating, he looked over the blueprint again. “Sorry Master, I can’t see anything like that.” That would potentially have made the mission simpler – typical that it was not an option.

He pondered for a second before verbalising his half-formed thoughts. “There’s a landing pad with access to the cells but… nowhere to store speeders or barges. They could be stored elsewhere in Mos Shuuta but it seems odd that a palace wouldn’t have access to their own transport,” he supposed slowly. He presumed that it would be especially true for a race that had no legs. “The Hutts are also known for their barbaric amusements which is why there’s the pit in the centre here,” he continued as he pointed. “They could just force battles between prisoners since it connects to the cells but pitting prisoners against savage creatures is also popular sport, right?” They would also need to be kept somewhere.

His eyes squinted slightly as he looked up at his Master after verbalising his internal monologue. “Is it possible that there are sublayers that are not on this map? The palace is on top of raised land so there’s plenty of space below it.” The plans showed no hint that his idea was true but perhaps it was wrong or out of date or the access was below the main floor that was seen; doors before the entrance to the fighting pit maybe? The more he considered it, the more he felt that he was wrong.

Dasi was flying high the second Master Vaal had told her she would be driving the speeder. She had never driven one before but she had an idea of the basics, hopefully it would be just like flying just a few feet from the ground instead of thousands. As she stepped into the drivers spot she expanded her awareness in the force, taking in everything around her, watching people in the streets pass by them, watching her master and her fellow get into the speeder. As soon as they were in she was thumbing the activation pad on the speeder, a surprisingly decent rumbling started and she grinned.

She strapped herself in, checking to make sure her fellows were strapped in as well. "Time to see how fast this thing will go." The excitement in her voice would be obvious to anyone who heard her speak, even if they didn't know her well enough. Confident they were ready the young padawan floored it. "Whoo!" She let out a cry of excitement as she felt herself being pushed against the seat. She let off slightly as they reached what seemed a reasonable speed for still being in the city and rounded a corner. Up ahead the dune sea sat. As soon as the tip of the speeder touched the edge of city limits Dasi once again floored it, not bothering to let off of the accelerator at all this time.

Confident in their lack of obstacles she turned her head to face the other two as the plotted out their attack. "If they have a landing pad that means they have ships that land there. We could always plan the escape to be on the day a ship arrives. Or we could arrange a diversion." The young togruta shifted the wheel slightly to avoid a random out cropping as she spoke. Something some people would find disconcerting to find their driver doing without even looking. "We could also search for a sewer exit. There has to be some other way out of there. I can't remember, were there any landing bays nearby? Those may be a good enough escape route."

Her thoughts aired on the strategy Dasi put her full attention back on driving the speeder. They were pushing the limit of speeders max speed and Dasi sighed disappointed. She was hoping to go faster, although she did enjoy "accidentally" going over some of the smaller dunes for the minor little bit of air time they would get. She avoided the large ones. She did not want to test the capabilities of the repulsorlifts and walking anywhere because she managed to crash the speeder did not sound appealing out here.

Jaered inquired about other areas and sub levels which were not displayed on the map, something Rennek had also thought "Its obvious this only exposes a fraction of the strongholds layout. I fail to see service plans which means there is more to this building than meets the eye. I can only assume there are various other layers but its layout it something we will have to reveal after our arrival. I can probe from within its facilities, but diligence on your behalf will not go amiss." he offered a small smile in hopes of alleviating any undue stress from Jaereds shoulders. His body thrown back into the cushioned seat as the speeder exited the Cities perimeter, something he did not wholeheartedly expect. He allowed Dasi to pilot the Soujorn on limited occasion and had restricted her piloting to areas of vast space where obstacles and debris were at its thinnest. She had shown remarkable skill despite her lack of any formal training but her excitement often manifested in heavy acceleration and sharp maneuvers. Clearly those traits carried over to land speeders.

The Jedi Knight collected himself and shot a sideways glance at Dasi, knowing very well she'd pick up on his unease through the Force despite the influx of sensation she absorbed. It was not a rebuke, merely a feeling of caution. They still had to make it to Mos Shuuta. He turned his attention back towards the map, cycling between the various layouts. Dasi pointed out the frequency in which ships and shuttles may dock at the landing pad, and both hinted at the possibility of sewer and sublevels being existent. They were more wise than they let off.

Rennek tapped his chin, thinking through the possibilities and variables "As a duo who bought in a Jedi Knight I'd wager your access to information will be more privy than my own. You may be in a more favorable position to question those which reside in Mos Shuuta, though I do err caution. Probe, do not delve. Exposing your hand may draw u.nwanted attention and no doubt there will be those who seek to undermine your accomplishments. Equally however, you may encounter those who want to curry favor. Regrettably, and this is no reflection of your ability and more a regret of my doing, you two will be taking most of the responsibility in this assignment. Whether you work individually or together, our desired result is an escape with minimal casualties and injuries. I have the utmost faith in you both." And he meant it.

Meanwhile, they were steadily approaching the stronghold and its surrounding gated community. Rennek prepared to be bound by Jaered as he motioned for Dasi to lower her speed. They did not want to approach too aggressively. From afar a Rodian could be seen exiting a tower, lowering himself down towards the closed gate with blaster rifle in hand. He waved the speeder to reduce its speed, waiting for it to slow to a halt where he would approach the driver. His dark eyes peered at the armored Togruta "State do poonoo unko noleeya mos shuuta." He spoke in the typical language of the Hutts, commonly known as Huttesse.

The smile from his Master made Jaered feel better about his deduction. He was glad that there was a chance that his first impression might be a good one. That could all change if the plan did not go the way it intended. One step at a time, though. Jaered often had to remind himself of that, otherwise, he would doubt his capabilities too much. After all, he was smarter than he gave himself credit for and the positive response from the Jedi gave him a little, yet needed, boost.

Jaered reflexively grabbed on to the side of the speeder as Dasi accelerated off, his knuckles turning white. After a moment of fear, he could not help but give a little chuckle at the Togruta. He was slightly nervous about the fact that the driver could not exactly see anything but he was told that he needed to have more trust in the force. After all, Dasi (presumably) could wield a saber well and so her sight must not be a hindrance to her. At least not to the extent that many may suspect.

There was that sinking feeling again in his stomach as Master Vaal explained it was mostly down to the two of them. He knew it to be true but being reminded of it did not help. Jaered instinctively gulped as the approaching Mos Shuuta grew ever closer. It seemed to be coming closer much faster than Jaered would have liked. In a way, he prayed that Dasi’s wild driving would ease to gain some more time before they were trapped behind those accursed walls. Alas, it did not…

Jaered bound his Master’s hands as instructed, slowly breathing to calm himself. “They’re not too tight, are they?” he asked. It needed to be tight enough to be convincing but he did not want to hurt the Jedi. He sat back against the chair as they approached the gate, a Rodian exiting to meet them. With the blaster in his hand, it was not exactly a warm welcome but Jaered expected nothing less. Trying to look somewhat stern, he stared at the Rodian as he spoke to Dasi.
