Yavin 4 - Jedi Temple Library - Evening

The rain started as a subtle tapping that soon became a rythmic pitter-patter, small droplets trailing down the tall windows that lined the far end of the library and blurring the view of the thick jungles beyond. Larana seemed to be entranced by it, eyes focused absently in the distance, watching the wind pull the trees back and forth while time continued on without her.

It hadn't been more than a couple of days since she had made her way to the Jedi Temple on Yavin 4, but already she found herself longing for an escape. In fact, the longer she sat there, face rested in the palm of her hand and platinum hair tangled in her fingers, the more it seemed that the room was closing in around her. Soon enough she'd be lost to the archaic text, or so she feared.

Her finger slid beneath one of the yellowed pages, turning it even though she hadn't so much as glanced at any of the previous pages. She hadn't read a single word even, though her Master had instructed her to do so as she had been almost entirely absent since their arrival. She would surely be disappointed upon her return, but not surprised.

It was uncharacteristic for Larana to sit still for too long, but the rain had kept her inside. She wiped some condensation from the window and continued to watch the treeline, unaware of her surroundings.

Yavin wasn't all that fun but it was the kind of atmosphere Crix needed to focus on his research; the kind of atmosphere that was so devoid of distracting, interesting, things. The library was not a place he ended up very often but when he did, it was entirely by design and very much in the pursuit of the one main goal he had taken into his position within the Jedi Order.

Helping his mom.

The only problem he had with the whole thing was that the Jedi Order had a fabulous library... guarded by a shrew of a Knight who seemed to think he was the Dark Side incarnate. He glared at the old lady who looked like she'd been a member of the Order since before the Empire.

"I told you lady, I don't know the specific techniques that were used!"

She frowned severely at him.

"And yet you are so sure the Dark Side was used? How could you possibly have known that?"

Crix growled, finally reaching the end of his patience.

"Because I pulled her out of that damned place myself!"

He stormed off to the side, leaving the librarian to her thoughts as he stepped between two racks of books and other tomes. Running a hand over his head, he closed his eyes and focused on his emotions, on the feel of them, before slowly beginning to release them into the Force. It was something he was having a distressing amount of practice with as of late.

His raised voice caught her attention, interrupting the pitter-patter of rain on the window and swaying tree line which had drawn her in. The increased emotion came and went in a subtle wave, pulling her gaze towards the front of the room as Crix stormed away. Larana had not seen him around before now and wondered what had caused him to lose his temper with the almost prehistoric woman who looked after the place. In the interest of self-preservation, it would have likely been best for her to avoid the situation and continue on with her day dreaming, but she had grown bored and really didn't care much for the consequences of her intrusion.

Larana stretched, her muscles stiff from having sat there for so long, and then pushed the wooden bench out from behind her. Her book laid open on the desk, her bag and belongings beside it, abandoned for the moment as she focused on finding Crix who had slid between two racks of books out of view from where she had been seated. It wouldn't take her long to find him and she leaned against one the of the shelves, watching as he closed his eyes to calm himself before she interrupted him.

"You alright?" She wouldn't wait for his response. "The old woman is stubborn, I'll give her that, but it's not worth letting her get you all worked up like that. I might be able to help you find something. It has to be more interesting than reading up on meditation techniques."

She smiled, blue eyes locked on, hoping this would prove to be more entertaining than anything Master Ris had planned for her in her absence.

The library was supposed to be a place of peace and tranquility – he was sick of hearing that phrase because it was a place of frustration to him. So many of the books within the records hall sounded so very promising but almost none of them were. A literal deluge of dead ends and firewalls and password locks; for those of Master Rank and higher they said.

As though they had a monopoly on knowledge!

Drums were beating softly in his ears again and he closed his eyes and tried to block out the rising noise. They always started quiet but they tended to get louder if he didn’t find something to distract himself. He spun around when someone came to meet him and he reached out with the Force, feeling her presence within the Force as he did with everyone.

… it was the first time he remembered being actually cold and it was the first time he actually experienced snow for himself… the vids hadn’t told him that the snow would be so dangerous and yet so fun…

He shook his head slightly.

“Yeah… yeah I’m fine.”
He answered after a moment, running a hand over the tips of his horns for a moment, “Just don’t like being told I must have been using the Dark Side just because I want to counter the effects of some Dark Side use.”

Crix tutted.

“I know it sounds dodgy but it’s not because I wanna hide dark veins and saggy face or anything; I’m looking for medical texts to help try and repair some mental damage done by the Dark Side.”
He grinned ever so slightly, “Don’t suppose you know any of the Masters’ passwords?”

Okay, so perhaps he seemed a bit disturbed, but for all it was worth, this did seem far more interesting than studying meditation techniques or starting out the window. There were likely consequences to be considered given the nature of the information being sought, but she hardly paused long enough to ponder them. However, it would prove near impossible to convince her Master to allow her access to any restricted texts when she could hardly remain focused to read what had already been assigned to her.

"I don't." Her response was matter-of-fact, arms crossed over her chest. "I imagine there has to be some other way for you to find that information. Perhaps you could look somewhere outside of the Jedi Order?"

Larana twisted a loose curl around her finger as she thought a moment. "Depends on how important the information is to you, but could you not 'borrow' someone's access codes?" She hinted at stealing them. "I doubt that either one of us is going to convince her to hand over the texts otherwise." She looked over her shoulder at the older woman he had been arguing with earlier.

She seemed preoccupied with arranging books to be put away on the shelves, but even if they snuck past her now, it wouldn't be easy to find the answers he was seeking before she noticed them. It appeared his options were limited and none without repercussions.

Oh well, Crix hadn’t really banked on the idea that she would know the access codes of one of the Jedi Masters. It would make it easier for him to gain the access but he wasn’t going to just accept it and move on – he was his mother’s son in that determination was not something he was short on. He wanted that information and it would help him heal his mother.

Literally anything else was just a roadblock he would breeze through – he was going to do whatever he could to help his mom.

“Hmm having them would have made it easier but it’s still not impossible. These shite-heads haven’t updated their security very much.”

From over the stacks the librarian called out.

“LANGUAGE!”

Crix scowled.

“Basic! You deaf as well you old bat?!”

He wasn’t making friends in the library but he wasn’t here for that – and his lessons with Master Tionson about not swearing were… a work in progress. Crix sighed a little bit before grinning a little bit.

“So… know any access points?”

His innocent expression was out of practice.

Plans to infiltrate the Jedi Order weren’t really on the top of her to do list, if they were being honest. No one ever planned to break in to prison, but she sure had spent a lot of time planning to escape it. The idea of stealing information was even more out of character. Books had never been of interest and the library was too quiet and organized; it made her unreasonably uncomfortable.

“Sure. Give me a moment to access the blueprints.” Her tone dripped with sarcasm and she may have even rolled her eyes a little.

“Not that I’m opposed to breaking the rules but, why is this information so important to you? I can’t imagine what the consequences might be.” She lowered her voice now, to avoid being overheard.

To say she was a model Padawan would have been a stretch, but so far she had managed to avoid treason against the Jedi Order and wasn’t sure she was ready to add it to her list. Questionable adventures, missed lessons, and neglecting her studies were all reasonably harmless compared to his suggestion.

“Perhaps it would be best to discuss this somewhere a tad more private, anyway?” Her hand gestures to the hall.

She was a sarcastic little sassy pot wasn’t she? Well Crix hardly had any room to talk – he was also a sassy little so-and-so, so it would be pretty hypocritical of him to make a big deal out of it or even react with anything other than sarcasm. So he responded, maturely, with some immature sarcasm right back.

“It’ll take you that long?”
he shot back with a smirk, “Well I suppose not everyone can have magic fingers like me…”

And he turned it into a light flirt because, hey, why the hells not? He reasoned he was allowed to have some rel[axing fun after the year he’d had (and was still having) and light flirting was one of the most fun ways to let off some steam. Of course when she asked why the information was so important his mind flashed to his mother.

The blank stare, devoid of anything that made his mother who she was…

His right hand started shaking slightly without anything to stop it until he forced it to close into a tight fist, knuckles white, and forced a smile back in place.

“Let me worry about the consequences – I’ll take them all.”
He assured her with that same strained smile, “Rest assured that it’s not for anything bad. I’m looking to help someone… someone close to me who ran afoul of some leather-fetish karks waving around red-glowsticks.”

Crix flicked out his multi-tool and nodded.

“Sure let’s get away from the old bat before she swoops down and tries to drain my blood or whatever it is she does to eat.”

He gave her the same sarcasm in return, lips pulled tight with a smirk. It surprised her, for not many of her peers had even given regard to her remarks in the past; those who had considered her rude or insensitive. There was a pause and she felt her cheeks warm with slight discomposure. Larana wanted to throw it back at him, but a sudden shift in his demeanor caught her attention instead.

The smirk on his lips turned into a troubled smile and she noticed his clenched fist, knuckles white. It was clear that she had struck a nerve and, while she was curious to know his reasons, decided it was best not to press the subject further.

"It's okay," she assured him with a softer, kinder smile. "I'll help you."

Larana motioned with her hand for him to follow, leaving the dim lit library, but not before retrieving her things from where she had sat, leaving the book she had been reading open on the table. Her master would no doubt come looking for her at some point, but wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find that she had left. Books weren't her thing, but apparently the idea of stealing them was rather appealing.

"I think we have a couple of options." She still kept her voice low, to avoid being overheard as they walked the hall away from the library. "You mentioned access codes and I'm sure we could get them. If you want to take the information instead, we could do that too, but might be under time restraints if you don't know what book you need. On the other hand, we could look outside of the Jedi Order. You mentioned the 'leather-fetish karks' and, if they're the ones who did this, I'm sure that they would have the information we're seeking as well."

She inhaled deeply, holding her breath as she contemplated their options. Each seemed to have progressively worse consequences, but they shouldn't be discounted. She turned her head to look at him while they walked, adding a final note.

"However, I do prefer we leave them out of this if possible. I'd much prefer that those consequences not include death and dismemberment."

Was she surprised that he’d responded with sarcasm or surprised that his sarcasm game was better than hers? He wasn’t going to try and say which but it was gratifying to have surprised someone even if it was over something as mundane as having a good sarcastic comeback. Of course by the time he thought about it, he wasn’t in the mood for more sarcasm.

Well, not the joking kind at least. More the defensive kind of sarcasm that was far more biting than people might have expected. That she seemed to have switched to pity was a bitter pill to swallow but he would do his best.

Help was still appreciated.

“Thanks.”

Crix followed the woman, cautiously keeping his head on a swivel for anyone or anything that might alert the old bat of a librarian of their intentions. He wouldn’t have put it past the old lady to have developed her Force abilities to locate people within the library… but he had been rather disappointed to learn that the Force didn’t work that way.

No magic sonar for him.

“You might have had a point about them having research on it – but I doubt Sith really care enough to heal the damage they cause.”
He muttered darkly, his distaste for the Sith colouring his words, “And I’m not sure I’d be able to just ask them questions.”

He wasn’t very good at the controlling his emotions part of being a Jedi yet but he could learn. Just right now he was at the stage where if a Sith tried to surrender to him, he wasn’t sure he wouldn’t just shoot them anyway. With a stunner but still! He grinned a little bit.

“Access codes it is. I figure the head librarian must have the goods so… if I distract her, do you think you could check her workstation for her codes?”

It would appear by his tone that her probing the situation had frustrated him some. His smile had faded into a far more bitter and serious expression and any sarcasm seemed more defensive than it had before. Larana could almost feel how tense he had gotten, walking beside her, attention constantly wandering in case their conversation had captured anyone's attention. Of course, stealing access codes from the Jedi Order wasn't a light offense and it would be imperative that they weren't caught.

"Sure, I can check her work station if you provide the distraction."

Her mind pulled her in a million directions, but she tried to remain focused on this. Crix hadn't been entirely forthcoming on his reasons for needing this information, but Larana wanted to believe that his intentions were pure. She repelled anyone else with her brass and sarcastic personality, so the idea that anyone would want her help was new and she didn't want to allow the opportunity to pass or be lost, even if it was reckless.

Larana pulled him aside, tucking them into a corner in the hall instead of moving further away from the Library. "When you're ready we can go." She tried to reassure him with a smile, pulling her blonde hair out of her face and into a loose braid. "I can follow a short distance behind you, so that we don't enter together. We should probably have some sort of warning signal as well, in case the distraction doesn't work so that I know when my time is up."

She was willing to help him by checking the librarian’s work station and that did wonders to improve his mood. He wasn’t doing too well at the whole “peace and calm” style of Jedi stuff right now but he still said he had a good reason for that. Thankfully she seemed more interested in helping him than judging him for that right now.

It was appreciated.

“Oh don’t you worry…”
he smirked, “I’m going to distract her so well that you’ll be able to tell when you’re clear to go.”

How was he going to do it though? That was the question and he wasn’t quite sure of the answer just yet but he was enjoying the brainstorming already. There was the good old fashioned argument but he was thinking that might be a little bit too much. She was likely to try and secure him if he was too belligerent… time to go with plan B then.

Though if he was worried his new companion might not see him as a good Jedi before this was going to seal the deal.

“I’ve got a great distraction in mind don’t worry.”
He assured her with a grin and a wink, “Follow in the wake of my disruption!”

With his idea firmly in place, he strode out from their hiding place and back into the library. Unlike before he didn’t do anything to try and hide his presence as he all but marched down the library toward the head librarian. The head librarian was a middle aged human woman with caramel skin and a severe expression permanently etched onto her face.

“Madam I have wronged you… I was rude and brash to hide my true feelings!”
he declared as he walked up to her, immediately taking all the attention, “But I cannot hide my feelings any longer; Head Librarian Rayfrance, I need you in my life! I yearn for your touch…!”

Loud flirting was a great attention-getter.

Her worry didn't set in until he became silent, the expression on his face turning to a devious smirk as he decided how best to distract the librarian. It would have been preferred for him to share those thoughts, instead of trusting her to follow blindly, but it appeared the entire conversation would instead take place in his head. Perhaps this had been a bad idea, but Larana felt she was in too deep to withdraw now and she didn't want to throw him into another tantrum.

He interrupted her thoughts to assure her that he had the perfect distraction, but before she could interject, he left her with a wink and was already headed towards the library. She took a deep breath and held it, allowing her frustrations to pass, before following after him.

'Please don't let this end in disaster.' she whispered beneath her breath, stopping just outside the large double doors to listen for Crix and his distraction.

His words echoed against the shelves of books, drawing the attention of everyone inside. Head Librarian Rayfrance turned as he approached, her expression stern as he professed his feelings in front of a small audience. Though her cheeks were flushed red in embarrassment, her tone was as harsh as ever.

"Have you completely lost your mind, Padawan?" She placed both hands on her hips, eyes daggers as she awaited his response.

Larana took this as her signal and moved quietly to her desk while the rest of the room was distracted, searching the papers that were scattered on top before turning to the drawers, careful to be as quiet as possible. If it wasn't etched in ink somewhere, she hoped to at least find her datapad; it would take some time to access it's contents, but the codes were sure to be there.

Crix wasn't sure how this whole thing was going to go but he was sure that he was going to make himself into the biggest distraction he could. If there was someone in the library? He was going to ensure that they found themselves completely incapable of looking away. All eyes on him because he demanded it and his antics would not, nay, could not be ignored!

Which meant he was going to try flirting with the head librarian because, hells, why not?

It had seemed like a good idea at the time but he was beginning to think that it was, in fact, not such a good idea at all.

"Lost my mind? Perhaps, fair Rayfrance but only for you!"
he 'assured' her as he reached out to take one of her hands in his own, "Please; do not send me away again without at least agreeing to have caf with me!"

He tilted his head to the side slightly.

"I'm ready to go at your pace, Rayfrance, truly!"

Which was probably 'non-existent' but hey, he was trying to sell a story here.

The decrepit old woman felt her cheeks flush a dark red as Crix took her hand, the skin on them wrinkled and dry. It was almost immediate that she pulled it away from him, unamused and clearly embarrassed by his childish flirtations. She pursed her lips, waiting impatiently for him to finish what he had, attempting to ignore the eyes he was drawing.

“There is no pace, Padawan.” She spoke in a firm and frustrated tone. “I’ve had quite enough of this foolish nonsense and suggest that you make your presence here scarce.” There was a pause before she added “and I might also suggest a mental evaluation in the med bay. I’ve seen one too many sides of your today.”

She began to turn away from him, assuming she had made her position very clear.

Larana continued to rummage through her things, crouched behind the desk as she listened closely for any interruptions to the distraction. The last thing she needed was to be caught committing a crime when she was supposed to be deep in her studies.

Opening a leather satchel she found tucked beneath the elderly woman’s desk, and pushing its contents to the side, she searched each individual pocket until she discovered a very small bronze key. She hoped that it would open one of the locked drawers, but it seemed to have been bent and the lock proved to be challenging.

Hopefully Crix could keep the woman distracted a while longer so that she could find out the drawers contents and hopefully recover the access codes from the restricted texts he was seeking.

Well the librarian wasn't really entertaining his flirting which was good - he'd be creeped the kark out if it turned out she was into this. He was NOT into older women, he just wanted to mess with her some more until his partner in crime got what they were after. Still, he was beginning to have some fun with this as well - he was totally going to start a load of rumors.

"No pace? No pace?!"
he cried out, pretending to be dismayed as he held a hand over one of his hearts, "Oh Force my hearts! Pierced by the lightsaber of cruel rejection!"

Shrak she was turning away...

Crix reacted on instinct.

"Oh I'm sure you could stand to see more of me today!"

Before very obviously amplifying the sound of a zipper being undone. It was just his leather jacket for now but it was enough to catch her attention as she rounded on his with reddened face. Slipping his leather jacket off of his shoulders, Crix tried not to imagine his credability as a Jedi disappearing as he started to strip out of his t-shirt underneath that as well.

A cat-call from one of the Knights along the side wall made his face burn.

From her position behind the desk, it sounded as though their distraction had made a rather drastic and inappropriate turn. The sound of a zipper being undone and a cat-call echoed from the small crowd that watched made her wonder just how far her new friend had gone, or would go to get the information he wanted. Larana needed to hurry or risk finding him completely undressed when she was through.

It took some effort to force the bent key into the lock on the drawer, and even more to turn it. It appeared as though it had not been opened in some time and the rusted metal scraped together as she pulled, careful to move slow and avoid drawing attention.

Inside she found a small, leather bound notebook with different codes and passwords written inside of it. One of these had to be what they needed to access the restricted texts, but just to be sure, she nabbed the woman's datapad as well.

"For Force sake!" the elderly librarian cried out, clearly distressed by Crix's unrelenting efforts. "Put your clothes back on, boy!"

Larana chuckled, stuffing her finds into the pockets of her robes and locking the metal drawer to keep from arousing much suspicion. She placed the key back in the pocket where she had found it and, after ensuring no one was watching, moved over to the crowd to watch Crix make a fool of himself.

Force and all the karking gods, he really hoped that Larana was able to actually get some information worth a damn from this because it was humiliating. Sure, his training under Hannibal meant he was toned as kark but still! This was not how he wanted to show people that he had a six pack and a V!

Was she done yet?!

Oh thank kark he could see her joining the crowd which meant he could finally stop acting the fool and get the hell out of there before he triggered a serious conversation from his Master about stripping in public places. That was SO wrong on so many levels but damn it, this was probably one of the only ways a Padawan like him could actually gain access to the medical studies done about treating Dark Side abuse on the mind.

"Fine - rejecting me won't change the fact that you love me really."
he declared with a huff as he pulled his shirt back on and moodily zipped his leather jacket back up all the way, "You'll regret it when you're all alone on those cold nights!"

Without waiting for the old woman to give him any kind of response, he marched out of the library with his head held high like he was trying to act like he wasn't hurt. Really he was trying to act like the whole distraction hadn't gotten wildly out of hand and his cheeks were burning bright red from embarrassment rather than anger from being spurned. Once out of the library he would lean his head against the wall and groan loudly.

"Larana... if you didn't get what we needed, I'm going to take it very personally."

It took a few moments for the crowd to disperse and for the old woman to return to her desk. Larana was thankful that, for now, she didn't seem to find anything out of sorts, and patted the small journal and datapad in her pocket to assure herself they were still there. She stayed behind, making her exit only when she felt that it was safe to do so without drawing attention to herself, or assumptions that she was following Crix. There were sure to be some repercussions for his bold profession of love and she wanted little to do with them after the fact.

In the halls, she brushed past him, where he leaned his head against the wall and continued on towards the gardens. It still rained heavily outside and she doubted many would be hanging around, making it an ideal place for them to talk and exchange items without being noticed.

"Well, that was a tad embarrassing for you." She admitted, once she was sure that the two of them were alone, her voice hushed by the sound of rain pounding on the windows.

Larana turned to face him, leaning against the wall behind her, arms folded over her chest. "Who knows though, perhaps she'll have a change of heart and take you up on that caf date." Her lips curled into a smirk and she couldn't help be laugh at his expense. It truly had been quite the scene and she hated to think what others would say once word spread of his feelings for the elderly librarian.

He was very much prepared to take it personally that Larana hadn't managed to get what they needed. If she did then he was going to be cautiously calling this whole thing 'worth it' so long as it helped his mom. If it didn't end up helping his mom? Well he was going to see if he couldn't get one of his droids to help him destroy all video evidence that this whole episode had actually happened. He was not above burning the entire library down around them if that was what was needed.

Noting the way she passed him, he followed after her and stood out in the rain. Given that his cheeks were still red, he rather enjoyed how much it cooled him down. He let out a gusty sigh when she immediately commented on how embarrassing it was for him. They both knew that already!

"Yeah I'm not going to ever use the library again."
he admitted freely before shrugging, "I'll use the holonet and the online aspects that the library provide - like a normal person."

Libraries were terrible.

He groaned a little bit, running a hand over his face and up through his spikes. It was a habit he had picked up from hanging around humans and other species who ran their hands through their hair when they were stressed out about something. He tutted loudly.

"If she gets that much courage I think we're all doomed and she'll be searching the Order for young men. And that right there? That's an exile-worthy offence if I ever heard one, right?"
