Narciso and Hiraya Contiello were proud to share with anyone willing to listen that their only daughter was a fine and kind young woman. Gentle, graceful, warm – truly, the young half-Tiefling was akin to a saint if one were to ask her parents to describe Tala in a nutshell. She was a good girl with a heart of gold, and would never willingly hurt another soul not because she was a good Jedi but because she was a good person.

Despite her height and the intimidating horns she inherited from her mother, one could also be forgiven if they described Tala as someone who was more angelic than saintly.

And currently said angel with horns instead of a halo was being chased by a gang of ruffians, a young boy held securely in her arms as she ran as fast as her long legs could manage. Her knuckles were bruised from how hard she had launched a fist earlier to knock out one of the hoodlums.

The Padawan's hair and clothes were in a mess, but right now all she cared about was escaping from her and her precious cargo's pursuers. The crowd parted as the half-Tiefling half-yelled and -pleaded for the people to make way, crimson eyes wildly searching for any escape routes. Spotting an alley to her left, Tala turned and sped towards it, trying to ignore the shouts and jeers of those that hunted her and the boy in her arms.

Tala never thought that she would find herself in trouble on Commenor, of all places. She was supposed to be meeting with her parents, but something important had come up and they were forced to postpone the reunion at a later date. The Padawan didn't mind, knowing how the pair preferred to tackle their business hands on. This was the first time that they had cancelled their reunion with their daughter, and to be honest Tala felt bad knowing that Mom and Dad most likely regretted having to do this to her. So she assured them that they didn't need to feel sad and at the same time reminded her that their meeting would still proceed, only at a much later date.

She did not have the heart to tell them that she was on Commenor already, afraid that her parents would feel all the more bad for the postponement of their outing.

Tala was minding her own business, whiling away the hours window shopping when the first signs of trouble rang like alarm bells in the Force. She followed that curious tug, apprehension rising when it led her to a dark alley. Her apprehension morphed into concern when her fluted ears picked up the sound of muffled crying. Following the sound and the Force, the half-Tiefling stumbled upon a horrible sight. A young boy, cowering and crying as five burly and muscled men ganged up on him with accusations about the former stealing from them. Unable to stop herself from marching forward, the young woman intervened – perhaps the action thoughtless and reckless on her part, but righteous anger had overtaken the Padawan. She couldn't simply watch a kid get ganged upon, let alone beaten, by adults!

Tala remembered asking – no, demanding – if the men had proof that the boy had done what they were accusing him of. They had none, of course they had none, and before the half-Tiefling knew it her hands had already curled into fists, one rising to launch itself at the nearest thug. Granted, the punch wasn't even imbued with the Force, but Tala was a strong girl and the well-placed attack had effectively knocked the living daylights out of the much taller and bigger Zabrak. Amid the distraction she quickly scooped up the kid who clung to her, terrified, then made a run for it.

Through the crowded streets she ran, trying but failing to lose her and the child's pursuers. And as the young woman dashed into yet another alleyway, she desperately hoped for someone to come to her aid. After all, Tala did not know if she could successfully take on four, heavy set ruffians on her own.

She was, after all, a very delicate lady.

Dash had stopped off at Commenor largely on impulse. He had been making his way from Rhinnal to see the Jedi holdings on Ailon, but had felt the urge to set down on the busy trading world for a few hours. He had some time and wanted to look through the planet's markets, famous for chrysopaz gemstones.

With great difficulty, he had discovered Ezra had a birthday coming up soon and he was hoping to find his boyfriend something nice. The Rhinnalian wound his way to the back corner of the market, leaning over a bespoke jewellery counter hidden away to one side. He asked to have a closer look at particularly glitzy ear stud, liking how the yellow crystal caught the light. On second thoughts, maybe a present to himself this time.

He sensed danger approaching before he saw it. A commotion sounded to his left and a young girl burst out of a narrow alley, seemingly startled to find herself at the back of the market stalls. She had a boy in her arms and a frightened look on her face, her horned head glancing around anxiously. Dash had the faintest sense that he might have seen her before, but he was not sure.

Several men came running out of the alley behind her, seemingly giving chase. They were surrounding her in seconds and everything about them told Dash they meant her harm.

"Hey there" he found himself saying, putting the jewellery down and striding between the closest two men. His armour was not exactly typical Jedi garb, but it would signal that he no simple onlooker. "Can't be anything worth five guys harassing a girl like this chaps. Shall we cool it yeah?" he looked from the men to the girl, holding his hands out in peace and hoping everyone could just calm down. It was the role of Jedi Knights to try and mediate such things and Dash was confident he could do so.

The man to his left moved unusually quickly, elbowing him in the chest and knocking the wind from him for a moment. "You cool it pretty boy, none of your fucking business".

Dash grabbed a nearby stall with his left hand to steady himself, his trademark ice already forming in his right. He was quite good at 'cooling it' as it happened, though not in the way they expected. But why did everyone have to push him?

He marshalled the Force and lashed out at the nearest two men, a wave of frost and ice bursting from his palm and lifting them off their feet, throwing them against the wall. "Get out of there!" he shouted to the girl. He had given her an opening, but if the other men were not scared off then he might yet need her help.

Tala was so focused on fleeing, on creating more distance between her and the boy's pursuers, that she hadn't realized that the men had switched tactics from simply chasing her to surrounding her.

The Padawan was forced to stop, turning to face the thugs as they finally caught up to her. Tala, for her part, bravely stood her ground even if the frightened gleam in her eyes betrayed that courage. With a resigned glare, weakened by her quick and shallow breathing, the half-Tiefling took one step back, prepared to fight if no one would come to her aid.

"Led us ta a merry chase, eh, missy?" one of them sneered, one hand stretching towards the Padawan and making grabbing motions. "Hand over dat thievin' brat an' we'll let ya walk out as if ya din' smack one a' my boys."

She kept her mouth shut, glaring defiantly up at the ruffians while shielding the quietly sobbing child from their view. The men snickered and laughed at her noncompliance. It sickened the girl how some people could find amusement in hurting a child. Her tail flicked anxiously behind her, fluted ears lying flat against her head. The half-Tiefling was contemplating on forcefully barging her way past the men when a voice spoke behind them. Crimson gaze sped past the assembled group that surrounded her and settled on a familiar face.

Dash?

She didn't personally know him, but she knew that he was once Master Albion's Padawan. Tala remembered that one social she had attended, remembered looking on with concern from a distance as the Arkadian and the Rhinnalian spoke.

The Padawan waited with bated breath as the Knight attempted to de-escalate the situation, only for one of the thugs to forcefully elbow Dash away. Things devolved as soon as he lashed out, frost blooming and bursting from his palm. Tala moved as the Knight had instructed, but the Zabrak she had punched earlier was quick to block her path with one hand shooting towards her, meaty fingers curling tightly around one of her horns.

"Running away, aren't we?!"

Tala cried out as she was yanked forcefully towards the Zabrak. Thoughtlessly – and in her panicked state – she lashed out as well, the Force gathering around her fist before she struck her captor's side. Her eyes watered with fright when she felt the man's ribs crack from her strike, the latter's hand slipping from its grip on her horn before he crashed to the ground.

One would expect that the two remaining men, shocked at the prospect of facing a pair of Force-users, would flee at the sight of their companions getting beaten up. Dash and Tala's attacks only prompted them to fight back, with one of them brandishing a dagger aimed at the Knight while the other launching himself forward in an attempt to restrain the Rhinnalian.

The half-Tiefling carefully but hurriedly put the kid down, hiding him behind a stack of crates. "Stay there! I'll come back for you!" she told the boy before going to Dash' aid. The two other men he had thrown against the wall were starting to recover, one jumping in to help the pair assailing the Knight while the other began to carry the fallen Zabrak away from the fighting after assessing his injuries.

Tala hated fighting, but since push had become a shove she had no choice but to protect the boy and help Dash. The half-Tiefling jumped on one of the men's back, arms trapping the man in a head lock.

"Knife!" she warned the Rhinnalian before the half-Tiefling and her quarry crashed to the ground, Tala intent on knocking out her opponent by squeezing the air out of his lungs.

The girl made a run for it, but she looked to have some Tiefling blood and one of her horns was grabbed by a ruffian, yanking her back. Dash had time to see her punch him to the ground with surprising strength, before his own senses flared again in warning.

The remaining two men came at him. The Rhinnalian did not know what their motivation was, but it must be strong. Most thieves or vagabonds would run a mile at the sight of Jedi powers.

One of them tried to grab him, but Dash was small and quick and he dodged aside with a dancer's grace. He threw the man away with a blast of the Force, sending him careening into a grocery stall in a pile of fruit and veg.

The second man rushed him and a third. But then the Tiefling girl was back, pulling one of them aside and shouting a warning about a knife. Dash saw the durasteel flash through the air and jumped back again, finding himself pinned against a wall. A second slash tore a hole in his shoulder cloak, only inches from his neck. This had gone too far now.

The Rhinnalian balled the Force and threw violently it at the man in front of him. A spear of ice lanced through the thug's abdomen, the sheer force of it lifting him up and impaling him against the far wall. The knife fell from his grip, clattering against the ground as the life spluttered out of him.

The other men broke now, running in all directions and cursing their names. Dash watched them go, breathing heavy and looking at the weapon he had fashioned with both pride and concern. But they had left him no choice.

"Are you alright?" he asked, stepping over to help the girl up. "I'm Dash, Dash Pavan. Have I seen you before? You're in the Order?". He glanced past her briefly, also wondering about the young boy.

Tala was so focused on the man she had pinned beneath him, arms locked around his neck, trusting that the Knight would handle the other two thugs on his own. She held on, intent on knocking the guy out and tightening her grip as he struggled, arms flailing as they tried to hit her. Perhaps his saving grace was when the half-Tiefling spluttered out a gasp, her grip loosening out of shock as death cut through her senses in the Force.

The thug bucked beneath her, throwing Tala off of his back. He took one look at his companion, impaled against the wall, lifeless, then at the Knight, and came to a decision that it really wasn’t worth it staying here to throw hands nor avenge his friend. The man, with a panicked look on his face, immediately took off.

Breathing heavily, adrenaline still coursing through her veins, Tala looked up from where she had crashed on the ground and shot the Rhinnalian a wide-eyed gaze, trembling as she accepted his help. The boy, sequestered between the crates a few feet away from the two Jedi, emerged and ran straight for the half-Tiefling. Shakily, the Padawan gave the kid a reassuring smile before looking back at Dash.

”I- I’m really not, I’m sorry,” she replied honestly, apologetically, wincing at the state of her hair and dress, the fabric rumpled in places. The young woman attempted to straighten her long skirt, hands still shaking. ”I’m a Padawan… Tala Contiello…”

Her gaze landed on the man impaled on the wall, and what color that remained on her face drained. Instinctively she blocked the sight from the child’s gaze. Despite her shock, however, there were no hints of judgment nor prejudice in her eyes when she met the Knight’s, only understanding. Both of them have been forced to take action, her to defend a child and him, to help her from her plight.

Still, the sight of the dead body unnerved her.

”Thank you, um… Knight Pavan,” Tala told him, offering him a shaky yet sincere and grateful smile. Onlookers were slowly starting to crowd around, curious to see the result of the scuffle. The half-Tiefling carried the child in her arms again then motioned for the Rhinnalian to follow. ”I think we should leave. I don’t want to wait if those… those men return with back-up. And I still need to find this boy’s parents!”

”The spaceport, miss,” the boy spoke for the first time, tone meek and subdued as he clung to the Padawan. Peeking at Dash, he shyly waved at the Knight. ”T-Thank you, mister. Nicola hopes you’re not hurt…”

Hurriedly, Tala began to lead Dash away from the gathering crowd, her horned head ducked low. She led him towards the nearest spaceport where the boy’s parents were located but halfway there, in front of a cafe surprisingly devoid of customers at the moment, the tears she was trying so hard not to let fall welled up. Adrenaline fading, a sob escaped the Padawan. She stopped, lower lip trembling, then - unable to really help herself because she was so afraid, so mortified at what she had witnessed and were forced to do - broke down, crying. It wasn’t even the sort of dignified crying, just straight up a bawling mess, sobbing loudly, shoulders shaking. It was unbecoming of her, that she knew, but…

”I-I’m sorry! I know I s-shouldn’t b-b-but… b-but!” Tala cried ”He said he d-didn’t steal f-from those creeps, b-but they beat him any- anyway! It’s unfair! I don’t want to f-fight, but I have to because no one else wanted to h-help!” Then, looking at Dash with tear-filled eyes, she continued. ”I’m sorry, I s-shouldn’t cry, but…!”

The half-Tiefling continued to sob, trying but failing to keep herself from crying. The boy, Nicola, peered up at her, worried at the sight of his savior breaking down.

The girl was still trying to pull herself together Dash saw and he could totally understand. The confrontation had rattled him too, despite him having faced worse. He had defeated a fair few monsters in his time, but rarely had he killed a man. He felt as if it had left a mark on him.

"Oh Tala, yes" he said, realising he had indeed seen her before. She was not a full Tiefling he realised, perhaps only half, though her horns still gave her a real standout look. "Don't thank me" he scoffed "those guys were totally out of line and they had it coming". He glanced down at the kid briefly, wondering what the thugs had wanted. But something stopped him asking. Tala did not deserve questions right now.

"Yeah ok, let's get him to his folks" Dash agreed. He was less worried about the men coming back, still feeling pretty pumped from the fight. He knew he should calm down, that he should be more focused on others. Something about Tala helped him start.

He gave the kid a smile and the three of them started towards the spaceport. He would have to come back for a gift another day. They had not gone far though when Tala slowed to a stop and Dash realised she was breaking down, right there in the street. "Hey, hey, look it's ok". He held Tala's shoulders and tried to comfort her, but she was reliving it all he could see. She was really quite emotional, but fortunately the Rhinnalian knew all about emotional.

Dash bent down to the young boy. "Listen little man, Tala here is a bit worried. Will you look after her for me while I get us a table at this place" he nodded towards the cafe. The boy nodded solemnly, drawing himself up and taking hold of Tala's hand. It would hopefully give her a little boost.

The Rhinnalian spoke with the cafe server and managed to get them a table next to a large, blooming planter. He ordered himself a fancy milkshake. "What would you like guys?". They should be safe enough here for now and they definitely needed a breather. "We're safe Tala, don't worry. You did really well".

There were a few things Tala quite disliked about herself, and being too emotional to the point of barely functioning was one of them. This was her very first scuffle, the very first time she used her strength to cause pain on purpose, and despite how justified it felt (and it still did) the course of action she took to save a child did not sit well with her. Life came with all kinds of conflict and she avoided the physical ones as much as possible, aware of her own surprising strength. Maybe she should've tried being diplomatic? But the men looked like they were out for blood at the time. Perhaps it was the sheltered part of her that desired to avoid displaying a show of force, but above all the half-Tiefling knew that she won't be able to forgive herself for looking the other way when she had any and all capacity to offer a helping hand.

The Padawan barely registered Dash' attempts to calm her down. She barely felt the young boy take her hand and lead her into the cafe. The world before her was a blur of colors, one hand swiping desperately at the tears that continued to warp her vision. She felt herself being pulled down gently towards a chair and she complied, her frame still wracked with sobs.

Please, calm down! You're all safe and okay now!

Dash' kind voice broke through her sobs and sniffles. Slowly, but thankfully steadily, Tala's tears began to subside. She was still red-faced, though, her palms wet with her own tears. The young woman frowned, wiped them on her skirt gingerly, before retrieving a handkerchief from her pocket.

"I'm sorry," she muttered, carefully wiping her flushed and tear-streaked face with the handkerchief. "To be honest, t-this is the first time I've raised my hands with the intent to hurt, and..." The young woman shook her head. "I'm sure I cracked that other man's ribs... broke them at most."

Realizing what her admission might mean for the Knight given that he had been forced to kill one of them, Tala's eyes widened and she shot Dash another apologetic look. "B-But we did what we have to do, right? They were being unnecessary cruel and unfair..."

"I really didn't steal anything from them, I promise," Nicola interjected, honesty bleeding into his voice. "One of them just grabbed me f-from the street and said mean stuff about me stealing a wallet." Then, to answer Dash' question, he requested politely, "I'd like a milkshake, too, please. Thank you, Mister Dash."

When the kid looked up at Tala, she gently patted his head as a silent 'thank you'. "Um, kopi tea for me if they're serving it, thank you."

Slightly confident that she wouldn't be breaking down into tears again now that they were out of harm's way, it was Tala's turn to fuss over her fellow Jedi, her gaze softened by genuine concern for thr Knight.

"Are you alright, Dash– Knight Pavan? Did they hurt you?"

"We did what we had to do, exactly" Dash said, doing his best to comfort Tala. His mother had always told him he was unusually empathetic but he certainly felt a special need to make sure this girl was ok. He had once been a new Jedi, uncertain of his abilities and how to make the right choices. "We would not have chosen it, but they forced the choice on us. That's what makes us different".

The drinks arrived and Dash pushed her and the kids across the table, hoping it would take both their minds of it. "Don't worry little man" the Rhinnalian said "it's not important. Even if you did steal something - and you could tell us - it would never make it right for those men to attack you like that. We'll find your mum and dad and make sure you're safe". Nicola should be able to tell them enough to track them down.

Even when Tala started to gather herself, her first thought seemed to be for others. "Call me Dash, please" he said smirking. He was a Knight true enough, but Knight Pavan still sounded terribly formal to him. His brothers insisted on using it at every turn these days for fun, and Ezra too sometimes.

"Just a few bruises I think" he admitted, risking a stretch on the cafe chair. "It could have been a lot worse with that knife, thanks for warning me and helping out". She had really thrown herself into the fight and it had given him the chance he needed to put the thugs on the back foot.

"Are you here on your own?" he asked, realising he had no idea just how Tala had got embroiled in all this. "Are you on a mission with a master or something, or on leave?". He did not want to be delaying her if she was supposed to be somewhere today, even if she did seem entirely focused on Nicola's welfare. He sipped his milkshake as he listened, keeping one eye on the street outside for any hint of danger.

"I really didn't steal anything," Nicola insisted sincerely, big, pleading eyes looking between Dash and Tala. It seemed that the shock of what had just transpired was finally catching up to the boy, and the delayed response worried Tala a bit. He repeated, lower lip trembling, and gaze finally settling on the Knight. "I promise, I didn't."

The half-Tiefling reached for one of the kid's small hands then rubbed comforting circles on his knuckles with her thumb. With her own tears gone, the smile she gave Nicola was now brighter and more assuring. "I believe you, don't worry," she warmly told the boy to alleviate his growing anxiety.

Turning to Dash, she acknowledged his words with a grateful nod of her horned head. Still, there was something about the whole situation that made her pause for thought. Her smile dimmed a little, the end of her tail flicking with indecisiveness. They have only just properly met, and under such stressful circumstance as well, but there was something about the Rhinnalian that brought a sense of ease to Tala. There was something about Dash that made it quite easy to talk with him, to open up something like–

"I know they were wrong to harass a child, and they're wrong for forcing us to take such drastic measures to stop them, but…" Tala withdrew her hand from Nicola's, twisting her fingers in a weak attempt at settling her nerves. "Is it wrong for me to feel bad about them?"

She really couldn't explain it properly. Maybe there was a reason why the thugs acted the way they did. Maybe they were just venting their frustration out and directing their anger on someone else. Maybe they led a troubled life…? But why, then, did any of them felt it justified to take it out on a helpless child?

Still, she could recall the feeling of bones breaking from her Force-imbued punch. She was already surprisingly physically strong to begin with, and thinking about the way her fist hit the thug's side made her wince.

Tala shook her head as if to get rid of other intrusive thoughts. Her face flushed when he thanked her, one hand rising to press against her cheek, expression bashful. She knew Dash was older than her, and talking to him right now, remembering how he helped calm her down from her hysterics earlier, almost felt like talking to an older brother or cousin instead of a fellow Jedi and Knight.

"To be honest, I just saw a flash of something metallic when one of those men started swinging at you! I just assumed it was a knife… but I'm glad I assumed right!"

The Padawan nodded in response to his following question. "I'm on leave, and here on my own," she replied. Tala took a sip from her own cup of tea before elaborating. "I'm supposed to be meeting with my parents today, but urgent events occurred with their work that needs to be handled immediately."

Nicola looked at Dash with wide eyes, brows furrowed with confusion. "Mission? Like a superhero or something? Or a spy?"

Tala shook her head no, muffling a giggle with one hand at the boy's question. "We're not superheroes or spies. We're–" here, she lowered her voice and dipped her head so it would seem to the little boy like she was sharing a secret with him. "–Jedi."

Nicola's mood took a drastic change. His confusion morphed into fear and worry, and though it felt like he was ready to bolt at any given moment, the boy remained on his seat as he glanced between Dash and Tala. Turning to the Knight, the kid looked as if he was about to plead for someone else's life, his next words – revelation, rather – manifesting the imploring look in his eyes.

"Please," he whispered, the words meant only for the two Jedi. "Please don't arrest my Mummy. Daddy says she's a Sith, but she's not with the bad people now. Please don't fight my Mummy, she's not really a bad person…"

Tala blinked once, twice, then three times before gazing at Dash, her face painted with shock at the sudden turn of events. It was a twist so unexpected, and if what Nicola said was true…

Oh, dear. What… What are we going to do?

"No it's no wrong" Dash said softly, almost marvelling at how much Tala could beat herself up. He thought he was good at it. "Everything you're feeling right now is very right, not wrong". He had not relished the fight anymore than her and the outcome sat uneasily with him too.

"The Jedi teach us to take the road of peace and compassion whenever we can" he said, still weirded out about how recently it seemed that he had been sat the other side of this table. "But sometimes people really don't give us a choice, especially when they force us to harm one to protect the other". He glanced at Nicola. "It is generally healthy to look back on your own decisions, but have confidence in your instincts Tala. You did the right thing stepping it to help Nicola here".

He slurped his milkshake, sad to hear her parents had cancelled on her. His never even came to see him, he always had to go to them. Maybe he would suggest it sometime soon. Nicola's reaction to them being Jedi was quite unexpected though and the suggestion his mother was a Sith made Dash reach absent mindedly for his saber.

"It's okay" Dash said, flashing a glance at Tala "no one is going to fight. Nicola, is there somewhere we can take you to find your Daddy - just him maybe. So we make sure you're safe and everything is ok?". Dash had encountered Sith more than he would like already and did not fancy running into one again unprepared. Commenor was a neutral world, which blurred the lines slightly, but he could not in good conscience send a young child back to live with a Sith.

"Daddy will be at work now" Nicola said, with a tone that suggested it was a work he found uninteresting. "Up where they make orange water for grown ups". Dash surmised the boy's father must be something to do with the brandy made on this world. "Come on then, show us where" he said, injecting a tone of excitement that got Nicola up and leading them out into the street.

"Best be on our guard" Dash said quietly to Tala "he may have this all mixed up, but keep him close until we know what's going on. Hopefully he can point out his father at this distillery and I can have a word that will clear this all up".

Even as the pair of them got up to follow Nicola where his father was, and even with the prospect of possibly meeting a Sith, Tala found comfort in Dash' words and presence. The worry in her eyes dimmed as she glanced at the Knight, nodding subtly at his suggestion. She did her best to keep up with the calmness he projected, and the half-Tiefling reached a hand for the boy to take one of his in hers.

"Dash is right. We're not here to fight," she assured Nicola who only smiled gratefully at her, his free hand reaching out to clutch the Rhinnalian's sleeve. While Tala had no issues regarding the boy's identity, his revelation about his mother still came as a surprise and a point of concern. If truth be told the young woman had no desire to engage with a Sith under any circumstance, but it was inevitable given her life and identity as a Jedi. Regardless if the age of the Sith Order was now a bygone era all thanks to Altair Din and his Empire, there remained this fear that the Darksiders would one day return. Hadn't one of the Knights she usually talked with shared this thought with her? Because as he said, life was just a cycle - and by extension, fate, wasn't it?

Regardless, Tala placed one foot in front of the other, making sure to keep Nicola on the lead. Her initial goal remained, and that was to help Nicola find and return to his parents. She answered his questions, mundane as they may be, and regaled him with tales of her daily training as a Masterless Padawan. The two included Dash in their discussion, of course, with Nicola asking what it was like to be a Jedi Knight and Tala listening attentively for the Rhinnalian's response but staying mindful of their surroundings. Though anxiety remained in her crimson eyes vigilance sharpened her gaze.

It didn't take long for the three to reach the distillery. There were workers going in and out of the establishment, some of them carrying lunch boxes indicating that they might be on a break. A few men were quick to recognize Nicola but not the two adults that accompanied him. A blue-skinned Twi'lek approached them, his expression open and friendly but his gaze suspicious as it fell upon Dash first, then Tala.

"Heya, Nic!" greeted the Twi'lek as he stopped just a few steps before the three. "What'cha doin' here? Didn't your old man tell you not to wander 'round with strangers? Got'cha li'l self into trouble or something?"

"Nuh-uh. I'm looking for Daddy," replied the kid, looking over at the distillery's entrance in search of his father. "We're-" A gasp cut off whatever he was about to say next as he spotted someone familiar. "Daddy!"

A brown-haired brown-eyed human - traits he starkly shared with his son - turned towards the group, a smile lighting up his face as he spotted Nicola. Unlike the Twi'lek, however, the man did not bother to hide his suspicion as he walked briskly towards the three. Tala let go of Nicola, letting the boy meet his father with a hug.

"What are you doing here? Why aren't you with your..." the man asked his son, the jovial tone dropping as he then rounded on the two Jedi. "Who are you? Why is my son with you?"

Tala was quick to answer given how she was the first to meet the boy. "I'm Tala, and this is my friend, Dash," she introduced themselves. She purposefully didn't mention about being Jedi at first, watching from her periphery as the Twi'lek backed off. The smile she offered Nicola's father was warm and friendly as she continued. "I met your son earlier... a group of thugs was harassing him-"

"She helped me!" interjected the boy enthusiastically now that he was in the presence of family. "She punched one of them and then we escaped but the mean men caught up to us! Then Mister Dash came and helped us, too!"

Worry for the boy understandably filled the brown-haired man's face. Before he could ask his son if the latter was alright, however, Nicola beat his father to it and assured the older man that he was alright, that he was only hurt a little, and-

"They're Jedi, so they won't hurt me," he told his father quietly, surprisingly aware not to gather more attention to their group as he shushed his father before the latter could react. The man - Lee, glared half-heartedly at the two Jedi, his hold on his son becoming a little more protective.

"Thank you for helping Nicola," he told Dash and Tala. Lee furtively glanced over his shoulder and shook his head at his Twi'lek friend, causing the latter to nod and return to work. It was that universal we're okay, there's nothing to worry about kind of nod, something Tala was becoming more and more familiar with, so she did her absolute best to ease the man's worries through her smiles and innocuous movements.

The half-Tiefling then looked at Dash, reaching out to him tentatively through the Force. She didn't say anything, instead letting him know how she felt. It wasn't fear, or worry for her own safety if Nicola's mother showed up. It was worry for Dash and for the father and son, along with thoughts about the presumed Sith woman showing up. Because she might be a Padawan still, but Tala would undoubtedly come to her fellow Jedi's aid without hesitation if push came to a shove.

They escorted Nicola to the distillery without incident. Dash was wary on arrival to be ready for anything, but the reception was largely as expected. The boy's father was rightly suspicious of their involvement but Tala was quick to explain and Nicola backed her up. Dash was glad to see his companion standing up for herself, given she had put everything on the line to protect the boy.

"I'm Jedi Knight Dash Pavan" he explained "it was Tala here who first had the heart to help your son. We wanted to reunite him with you, is there somewhere we could have a quick chat before we go?"

"I'm Ivan, Ivan Lan" the father replied, relaxing a little and shaking their hands. "We can speak in the storehouse". He gestured to an oval shaped building across the way from the distillery. As they made their way towards it, Dash picked up a sense of Tala's anxiety through the Force. Her worry, desire for caution and support come what may all resonated clearly. It was impressive, not every Jedi was capable of projecting their emotions so easily, even fewer Padawans.

Dash gave her a knowing smile as they entered the storehouse, himself ready to draw on his own Force talents if things went wrong.

"We would not normally pry Mr Lan" Dash began as they filed in between the casks of brandy "we are just happy Nicola is back with you. However, he mentioned something we just wanted to check with you first". Ivan looked from them to his son and back again, his brow furrowing.

Dash continued. "We understand your wife may be a Sith? Is that the case? Are you and your son safe?". The Rhinnalian took no pleasure in asking such pointed questions, but all his experience with the Sith had shown them to be extremely dangerous, both to themselves and others.

Ivan stiffened, clutching his son close, his expression pained. "She is" he said with a huff "as far as I'm concerned anyway. I...I didn't know she was one of them when we met". He looked back up at the two Jedi, seeming to remembering who he was talking to. "She's been out the game years, since this little guy came along, that's what she promises me anyway".

Dash was still weighing his next words when the rear wall of the storeroom split open. A unfamiliar woman with red-brown hair appeared in the breach, her expression grim. "I knew I felt something" she said solemnly, taking one step inside. "Who are you, what do you want with my family?".

Tala followed Dash and Ivan who now carried his son in his arms. She understood Ivan’s suspicions and wariness towards the two Jedi after the man had confirmed that his wife was a Sith. The half-Tiefling would have easily given in to her own apprehension but she steeled herself, knowing that she couldn’t always rely on other Jedi to ease her own worries. Dash had already consoled her earlier, doing a wonderful job in pulling her out of her panic and calming her down. This time, the Padawan swore she wouldn’t be such a burden.

She stood resolutely beside Dash, wide crimson gaze darting between the Knight and Nicola’s father. The boy seemed content with watching the proceedings, leaning into his father’s chest as he sneaked a smile aimed at the pair of Lightsiders. Tala returned it with a wink before shifting her focus on Ivan.

”Was it a promise you believe she keeps even now?” she asked the older man, her tone bereft of judgment. It was obvious on the half-Tiefling’s curious expression that her question came out of genuine concern.

Ivan, for his part, did not bother to hide his disquiet and half-hearted annoyance at the Padawan’s query. ”She’s my wife; of course I believe her! She promised on our son’s name, so please,” here, his tone had taken more on a pleading note, ”if you’re here to take her…”

Tala reached forward, one hand resting reassuringly on the man’s shoulder. The action earned the Padawan a more hopeful look. The half-Tiefling, much like Dash, weighed what she wanted to say before speaking them out. As she opened her mouth to speak, however, the sound of the wall splitting stopped whatever she was about to say. Automatically placing herself between the group and the new arrival, Tala raised both hands to show that she was unarmed, her attention diverted towards the older woman.

”Nothing,” was Tala’s seamless response, though the way she replied too quickly only served to raise the woman’s - presumably Nicola’s mother - suspicion.

The older woman pursed her lips, narrowed gaze shifting between Dash and Tala. The Force coalesced around the woman until flames sparked, then licked along her clenched fists. She made no move to attack, however, the display was made to intimidate rather than attack. The Padawan took it as an opportunity to clear things up.

”We just want to return Nicola to his Mom and Dad,” the half-Tiefling told the woman. It was an honest response because that washer and Dash’ ultimate goal. Had Nicola not mentioned that his mother was a Sith, then the two Jedi would have been on their merry way. Still, Tala wanted to make sure that the promise Ivan was given was being kept, that the woman had been honest about severing her ties to the Sith life. But with Nicola’s mother seemingly largely unpersuaded, Tala bit back her fear and chose to stand her ground.

If only to protect Ivan and Nicola if the woman snapped, if only to help Dash if push came to a shove.

”And you have returned my boy. Step away from my family, and be on your way,” the woman told Tala as her gaze settled upon Dash. ”Go. Now. I will not repeat myself. Whoever you are, I don’t want trouble. Just leave us be.”

Even before the flames coalesced around Nicola's mother's hands, Dash sensed the flicker of the Force about her. Sith or not, she knew how to use it.

The Rhinnalian did not generally take kindly to being threatened and drew the Force himself, though outwardly he didn't move yet. He had matured enough to know he must try diplomacy first.

Tala, who had been a great help reassuring Ivan, answered the mother's question honestly and openly. Dash could sense she too was alive to the complex family dynamic here and he was glad to have a companion approaching it from the same angle.

"We do not want trouble either" Dash said calmly, "we only want to talk. Before we go, we must know that Nicola and the people here are really safe". He paused, bracing. "Is is true you were once a Sith?".

The woman's eyes went wide, but her determined look never faltered. "That is none of your concern" she hissed and the flames around he hands flared briefly, sending sparks and tendrils halfway across the distance between them, scorching barrels and charring wood.

Just as quickly a small burst of power radiated from Dash, sending a film of frost and ice racing back across the ground and up the walls and beams. A line of knee-height icicles leapt up from the dusty floor between them, as if daring her to goad them more.

The mother did not back down, but she now regarded them with wariness, as if realising for the first time she was not the only Force-user here. "I would never harm my own son, or any innocent of this world" she said through gritted teeth. It was not quite the clarity they needed.

9/20 for diplomacy success
