CORUSCANT
10.00pm local time

He was so stupid.

Dash kicked the kerb in frustration as he wandered down the dusty street, hands in the pockets of his
jacket and shoulders hunched. He wasn't cold - he was never cold - but he was doing his best to disappear.

He had been lost in the Coruscant underworld for the best part of an hour now and it was entirely his own fault.

He should just have waited at the port between transports, but the big city theatre had been too tempting. It had been well worth going, even if his friend Misha was a no-show in the end, but the shuttle back to the port had blown a relay and tipped him out in the wrong neighbourhood. Now he had to walk through one of the worst parts of the undercity.

"Hey kid".

Dash slowed and glanced back over his shoulder. A big reptile guy - Trandoshan maybe - was sitting on the kerbside a little way off.

"Yeah?" he replied, half turning but still walking. He really didn't want to talk to anyone right now.

"Come here, I wanna ask you something"

"Sorry gotta-" Dash thought fast "gotta meet my friends, they're just-" he pointed randomly "just round the corner".

Then he walked into something big that stopped him dead and he jumped back with a gasp. Two men this time, Humans but a head taller than Dash and mean looking. "Don't think so kid, there's none of your sort round here".

One of them reached for him but Dash twisted away with a dancer's grace. "Honestly guys, back off - please".

He backed away, realising he should show them what he was. He pulled his saber hilt from the hidden holster on his back. Maybe just the sight of it will scare them off. He really hoped so, he didn't want to have to use it when it still scared him too.

Hera walked quietly through the underbelly of Coruscant, just another traveler wrapped in a dark cloak. Her hair, cleansed of its dye for her meeting with a group of mercenaries, was safely tucked away where its silvery reflection could not draw unwanted attention. Her black goggles pulled over her eyes, she looked around through the neon lights and throngs of people for posted directions to the nearest shuttle bay. Quietly, she sighed and thought, 'A thousand years of specifically tailored evolution, and my Arkanian ancestors thought infrared vision was more important than five fingers?'

Suddenly, the disguised Jedi Knight stopped. A slight disturbance in the Force peaked her attention. Quickening her step, she moved down an alleyway and towards another street. A young man whom she did not recognize appeared to be in the process of a shakedown from a trandoshan and two large men. The thugs did not draw her attention. Rather, Hera's eyes flicked towards the clear nexus of energy strapped to the boy's back- a lightsaber.

As Dash reached for his blade, the warning of- "Honestly guys, back off - please." -Escaping his mouth, Hera slipped past the humans with inhuman grace and speed. With Force flowing through her body like air through wind chimes, Hera gently reached out and clasped Dash's back where his hilt remained strapped, attempting to stop him before he drew it. Smiling, she declared loudly, "Stupid Kriffer! I have looked everywhere for you-! Get your ass moving, we'll be late for the shuttle-" Turning to the three thugs, Hera would declare as she waved 'goodbye' "You won't mind us leaving you."

The energies of cosmic power moved through her body, reaching out and touching their minds. The influence was quick and rough, the suggestion might even be painful for them. But it wasn't meant to do much more than distract the men, if it worked. Hera needed to get this youngling away, and she would pull on his back immediately after speaking to the thugs. Her hand never left his strapped hilt, a not-so-subtle warning of 'don't draw it.'

She seemed to come from nowhere. One minute Dash was alone facing the three heavies and the next she was there, a firm hand on him.

"Wha- me? The shuttle?" He looked from the men to her, trying to see through her gleaming visor. Then he felt a tingling at her touch and stopped his babbling abruptly. He knew that feeling and basic training had taught him how to make sense of it. "Oh, yes! The shuttle yes!" He relaxed slightly and let go of his hidden saber, instinct telling him the woman was trying to help.

Seconds later they were walking off. Dash let her pull him away, only tensing when he felt her release another wave of Force energy, this time wrapped up in her words to the three men. He glanced back open mouthed as two of them hesitated and watched them go. The Trandoshan - if that's what he was - didn't look so sure though, tossing his head and sniffing the air.

"I mind lady. Stop!" he snapped, stomping after them.

"I think he's mad!" Dash warned, half walking half running backwards at this point. He didn't need encouragement to keep his saber away, so reached for the Force instead this time. He pulled it towards him and threw it down the alley at the Trando, hoping to knock him off his feet.

Hera was known to be a phenomenal blades-woman, a great mechanic, and a decent pilot, what Hera was not, however, was patient. This Padawan tested her once more as the trandoshan didn't seem to get her suggestion and started chasing them. Shouting his warning, the Padawan reach for the Force. In an instant, she released the back of the boy and reached for the nape of his neck. She attempted to smack him, hard, to cause a quick and sharp reaction in order to stop him from drawing on the Force.

With her order hand, she drew her holdout pistol and fired. It was no warning shot, but it was set to stun. As she fired -twice for effect on a Trandoshan- she snapped at the kid, "Run you fool!"

It occurred to Hera at this moment that the kid, while clearly an adult, did not know of the current climate of Coruscant. Jedi were not welcome here. If he used the Force in any way that could be recognized or drew a lightsaber, it painted a massive target on his back. After firing, she turned to-hopefully- chase after wherever the Padawan ran off to.

Assuming he ran, otherwise, if he still waited there, Hera would grab him and run towards the nearest large crowd. An easy place to lose any possible pursuers.

Dash felt the Force come quickly, like it so often did. It bunched in his hand and he went to throw it at the Trandoshan.

A smack across the back of the head knocked his concentration and sent him spinning. "What the frack lady!?" but her face and stance brooked no argument. The older Jedi pulled her pistol instead, firing at the Trando and telling Dash to run.

He didn't need encouragement, he'd had enough of all this already. The young Padawan turned and sprinted down the street. A fork in the road gave him the choice between a wide boulevard and a gated off access to a busy food quarter.

Dash went for the gate. He could see lots of people on the far side; if he could make it there, he could disappear. They could disappear; he was sure he could hear the Jedi woman close at his heels.

Sprinting right and jumping atop a dumpster, he pirouetted and flicked off the alley wall, aiming to leapfrog over the gate. He was getting the hell out of here and he was only half sure he wanted her to follow.

Hera pursued the young man as the trandoshan hit the ground. He apparently did not expect to actually be shot at himself. His surprise would be his undoing, and Hera took full advantage of the lack of pursuit to chase after the Padawan. He moved quickly, surprisingly adept on his feet. However, outrunning Hera would be impossible. The Force flowed through her body like water as she moved, increasing her speed exponentially as she caught up with the young man.

The moment he leapfrogged over the gate to the alley, Hera leaped over directly behind him. Clasping his coat, she drew him in gently towards a nearby recess in the alley. The recess lead to a small backdoor to an apartment complex. Wordlessly, she released the young man and knelt before the door's access panel, using the Force to pry off the weak electronic cover in order to access the wiring behind it.

As she worked, she spoke, "I'm Hera, by the way. What're you doing on Coruscant?" It occurred to Hera, at this moment, that she wasn't positive that this kid was even a Jedi. Her innate trust in the kid with a lightsaber troubled her, and she immediately feared the worst as she asked her question.

The young Padawan made it over the gate. He rolled and kept low in a crouch, breathing hard in a mix of anxiety and exhilaration. He'd done it.

Dash's relief was short-lived. Another tug at his collar announced the woman had followed and he found himself being hauled into a nearby doorway in the shelter of an alley. Now just a minute! He was getting a little tired of being ragged around and would have thrown her off a second later. But she'd already let him go.

"Hera..." he said, repeating the name "Well I'm Dash" he watched her working away at the door controls as if she was working to some silent plan. "Are you a Jedi?" he asked. It felt like he didn't want to tell her much until he knew. Not that he had many doubts. She had seen off the Trando and the mercs like only a Jedi could.

"And what are we gonna do once we get in there?!" he glanced up, unethused by the rundown apartment complex.

Hera gasped as the power wires shocked her, but she continued working. The kid asked if she was a Jedi, and at that Hera's fear of this kid's origins melted away. The genuineness in which he introduced himself, the lack of any malice or hatred when he asked if she was a Jedi. Then, without waiting for an answer, he kept talking, a clear sign that he didn't intend to fight her no matter what her answer was.

The door snapped open and Hera smiled. Standing, she beckoned Dash to follow her while she spoke. "Indeed, I am Jedi. As are you, I take it? Come, follow me-" Hera moved into the apartment building. The backdoor led to an old laundering room, a single machine in the back was running as the Knight moved to sit down on a nearby old chair. An empty, quiet room as the door closed behind the two of them.

Cracking her neck, Hera took a serious tone for a moment as she responded to Dash's last question. "What we are doing in here is having you explain to me why you think flaunting your lightsaber or the Force on Coruscant is acceptable. These people here have no love for Force Users, some of them are even willing to go after the multitude of bounties on our heads. Did you not think of this?" Despite Hera's serious tone, there was no anger in her voice as she spoke. Rather, the Jedi Knight sounded filled with concern. It was not the reputation of the Jedi that Hera sought to protect, but the physical wellbeing of Dash himself.

"Yeah" Dash replied, admitting to being in the Order himself. He felt a bit reassured to know he and Hera were definitely on the same team.

He followed her inside and into the quiet laundry room. It felt safe enough after the brawl in the street and Dash started breathing normally again. He hadn't realised just how on edge he'd been.

His relief was cut short though when she rounded on him. "That's not fair" Dash replied "I wasn't flaunting anything". He was not great at keeping his head down generally, but he had really been trying today. "I didn't do a thing to those guys, they started it and obviously thought they could do what they liked. I was only gonna scare them off...".

He kept going despite Hera's green eyes staring right through him. "I know Jedi are targets at the moment, but they were gonna try and beat me up anyway, what was I supposed to do?". A little voice answered that Hera herself had shown things could be resolved without saber or Force, but he ignored it.

"I wasn't even supposed to be down here" he explained "the shuttle broke down on the way back to the port and I had to walk. I'll have missed my transport by now and everything..." he wondered how long it would be before he could get another ship to the Tython temple. It could be days.

Dash hopped up onto the laundry machine, sitting on the top with his head in his hands. "I guess, I'm still learning how to do this all right" he said, frustrated at admitting his shortcomings. Sometimes, being a Padawan sucked.

Hera listened quietly to the Padawan as he spoke, his voice moving from frustration at Hera's rebuttal to frustration at himself for not handling the situation differently. Sighing, the Jedi Knight reached into her back pocket and pulled forth her Holdout blaster. With a loud CLACK! she set it on a nearby washing machine. She stayed quiet for a moment more before finally replying to Dash as he sat opposite her.

"Being a Jedi isn't easy, and I'm not going to berate you all day long, that won't teach you anything. Your intentions are admirable, and I know you didn't mean anyone's real harm. However, once your lightsaber comes out, harm will happen. An ignited blade means death or dismemberment to all those that question your strength. Sometimes, that's the only answer, but as a Jedi it is our obligation to look for any other way out."

At that, she tapped the holdout blaster pistol, "Get yourself one of these. Everyone has them, they're illegal almost everywhere, but that only applies if you get caught with it. It's small, easily concealed and can be set to stun. Additionally, I have a starfighter stashed nearby, I can take you wherever you need to go. So let's wait here for a bit til the heat dies down. Tell me, Dash, who is your master?"

A sinking feeling pulled into Hera as she asked that question. In the best-case scenario, Dash's master was incompetent and she would need to berate him, or her. In the worst case, Dash's master was dead.

Dash clicked his heels against the laundry machine below him, blue eyes blinking as he listened to Hera's words. She was obviously right, but it didn't make it any easier to swallow.

"I know" he replied "I should have thought of another way". A blaster pistol would certainly have done it. But there were probably others too. He might well have been a match for the three cretins back in the alley, but he had been stupid to risk revealing he was a Jedi. There were lots who would kill a Jedi just for sport.

"Thank you" Dash said, at Hera's offer of transport. She had solved more than one problem for him today. The question of a master though was a difficult one.

"I, I don't exactly have one...." It was true at least. Dash should have had a master a long time ago, a Jedi Padawan would find it hard to grow, to round out their knowledge without a man or woman of experience to guide them. But he, well he'd resented it. He'd come to the Jedi as an escape, not realising the hard work and the pain that it took to be a good one. He knew he couldn't grow any more on his own, but it was hard thing to admit.

"I guess I've never looked, never tried" he said, unable to quite meet those green eyes. She couldn't read minds could she? He half felt she could. "I just, I was hoping I could just kinda find my own way" he continued "everyone back on Ansion was so keen to get on their path, the same path, seemed like every one of them was off to do the same thing. It's, it's not me" he glanced at the window, feeling a bit hemmed in in the room. "I thought I could do it, on my own. But I can't, I need....help" he admitted, looking at the floor.

Hera watched Dash intently as he spoke, her eyes almost unblinking. Her darkened goggles had been removed when they entered the quiet, darker room of the laundry area. Perhaps to another, they would be watching Dash's fidgeting and changing emotions, but Hera saw something entirely different. Her Arkanian eyes watched the heat of his body, his heart pumping blood, the warmth of his fingers transferring as he touched the cold metal of the dryer below him.

She could tell more about him from the heat of his body than the subtle movements of his face, though that was not to say that she couldn't see those too. He was nervous. Embarrassed even. Trapped. Hera moved back away from Dash, sitting on the washing machine on her side to give the Padawan a little bit more room. Smiling, she finally responded as Dash finished speaking.

"Well now, I can't fault you for trying to go it alone for at least a little while. Even I tried that for a bit when I was a Padawan, but eventually, everyone needs a mentor on their journey. However! I'm also quite proud of your ability to admit you need help, Dash. Recognizing your weakness is powerful, but don't let it consume you. As for having a Master, congratulations, you have one now-!"

Hopping off the washing machine, Hera started walking towards the exit door. Stopping before tapping the button to leave, she looked back towards Dash for a moment with a wild grin, "That is if you will have me as a teacher. I'm a little, excentric, as you might have guessed. But I can promise you at least two things if you become my Padawan. You will learn a lot about being a good Jedi, and you will never be bored. What do you say?"

Hera could see something unique in Dash, and a certain kind of drive gripped her as she looked at him. She wanted to draw out that uniqueness, harness it, and see Dash turn into a fantastic Jedi Knight.

The young Padawan half expected Hera to admonish him for not enlisting with a master before now. He knew he should have bent to someone's tuition by now, but he'd just found it hard. But, surprisingly, she seemed to get it. Dash found himself looking up at the first person in a while who had really heard him.

"Wow..." he said, open-mouthed at Hera's offer to be his master. No one had ever taken this much interest in him or his training. Try as he might to pretend it didn't mean much, he knew it did. And while Hera was firm, he already had a sense she was fair. And knew bucket loads more than he did about most things.

"I, I would be hon- yes, yes!" he said, talking over himself "I do want to be a good Jedi, but I definitely don't want to be bored doing it. If you're mad enough to give me a go, then yes, let's..." he smiled awkwardly, slipping off the washing machine and shrugging in surrender.

Hera seemed to have gifted the blaster pistol, so Dash reached out and picked up, feeling its weight before slowly pocketing it, one eye looking for Hera's consent. He looked at her expectedly, cracking his knuckles in anticipation.

"So I'm in, Master. Where to?"

Hera smiled at the enthusiasm with which Dash spoke and moved. As the young man reached for the holdout blaster left on the washing machine, eyeing her for approval, Hera winked at him. Pulling her darkened goggles back over her eyes, she remarked in answer to his question, "We go to my ship first, then Tython! I have a good feeling about all this."

The walk toward where Hera hid her vessel was a short one, but thankfully uneventful. The trandoshan and his friends seemed to have properly, as Hera would put it, 'kriffed off.' However, as they neared the small alcove, Hera held up a hand to stop. The alcove rested above a large hole in the planet, one of many utilized to allow airflow between the lower levels and the upper levels. No one was supposed to be around here except a few local maintenance workers.

So why did Hera sense multiple beings?

Moving towards the corridor that led to the alcove, Hera peeped around the corner. Six mercenaries stood around the ARC fighter, admiring the construction. Hera frowned, clearly they weren't just there to take holograms of the older model starfighter, as evidenced by the one attempting futility to open the cockpit.

Gesturing for Dash to take a look himself, Hera whispered a question to him, "So, without rushing in, I want you to think. What would you do to get those guys away?"

Dash felt like he was starting a new chapter as he walked out the laundry room and into the street. It was the same street, but he had a Master now, and a bit of a plan of where he was going next. It was a lot more direction than he'd had in a while.

He hurried after Hera, keeping pace with her as they headed towards her ship. He had a billion questions and was about to open his mouth to ask one when Hera held up a hand and gestured around the corner. Dash leaned past her and peered around the bend.

More fracking mercs. Six of them if he counted right, jostling around what looked like Hera's ship. They must be hunting Jedi like his Master had said, they really weren't safe on Coruscant at all. He bit his lip and wondered how they were going to get past them.

"Get them away?" Dash repeated, thinking hard. His first thought had been that they would have to confront them somehow, even though he wasn't eager for a fight. But yes, maybe there could be other ways. "What about...a distraction?" he asked "if one of us draws them away somehow, so we can loop back round to the ship?"

He spared another look around the corner, spying they great big pit below and the narrow gantries running around either side. Maybe there was something or somewhere nearby they could use to draw the mercs attention.

It was almost as if Hera could see the gears turning in Dash's head as he replied to his master. Quietly, she listened to his suggestion before breaking out into a wide smile. "An excellent plan, I will provide your distraction then. Once I have drawn them my way, get into the ship and start her up. Don't worry if you don't know exactly what to do, just tell R6 that you're a friend of mine."

Standing up straight, Hera was about to round the corner before she paused to add, "Oh, make sure you mention my name exactly. R6 is a little fidgety without details-" Then at that, Hera strode out towards around the corner and towards the alcove. Without skipping a beat, she shouted to the mercenaries, "Hey boys! Looking for lil ol' me?" and ignited her lightsaber. Dual blades of orange cracked and roared in the light of the planet. For a second, all six of the mercenaries stood gawking at the display of light, before one shouted "Get the Jedi, you idiots!"

Hera turned and ran in the opposite direction of where Dash was hiding, turning off her lightsaber as she did so. Five of the six mercenaries bolted after the Jedi Knight, drawing blasters as they did so. No one fired at her, not yet, they were trained well enough to hold their shots until they had at least a fighting chance of hitting their target.

Unfortunately for Dash, not all the mercenaries ran after Hera. One remained behind, standing by the cockpit. It was their leader, the one who shouted a moment ago. He was dressed in a plain leather jacket and armored flak pants. His weapon, an old e-11 blaster, was now drawn. Now, without the benefit of Hera's presence, it seemed Dash would need to think on his feet once again.

She liked his idea, which was a good start. He was not sure how he felt about her being the distraction, as it left him on his own, but Dash was reassured that his new master felt he was up to it. "Ok" he said confidently "I'm sure R6 and me will get along just fine". He didn't mind droids, particularly those with a bit of spark and personality.

The young Padawan watched from his hiding place as Hera strode out and ignited her saber, calling out the mercs and drawing them away. Dash had only seen a double-bladed saber a handful of times, and probably never wielded with such confidence. He pressed himself against the wall as Hera set off running and the mercs chased after her, oblivious to Dash in the shadows. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5....just five. That left one for him...

Dash took a breath and risked a glance around the corner. The remaining merc looked like the leader, standing confidently with his blaster pistol drawn. He had one eye on the approach, but seemed close to deciding he had a breather and could get back to trying to crack open the cockpit.

The Padawan would let him think that while he weighed his options. This guy was unlikely to fall for another distraction and Hera had cautioned against using his lightsaber or the Force unless necessary. He had the blaster, but he was not a perfect shot; he would need to get closer to be sure of hitting the guy before he could shoot back. He also didn't want to hit the ship.

He couldn't hit the guy with anything from here. Whatever he did, he needed to be closer. He thumbed his casual jacket, remembering he didn't look like a typical Jedi as a plan formed in his mind. Drawing himself up, he told himself it would work, and strode around the corner.

"Tell me you guys have found the damn Jedi?" he shouted, mustering all the arrogance he could.

"Huh? Who are you - stop right there!" the merc leader planted his feet and waved his blaster aggresively.

"Relax, big shot" Dash said, still walking towards the ship but holding his hands up with a look of annoyance "I'm Crimson Dawn, my bosses are looking for Jedi too - sent me down here to check if you and your boys really found one or if it's just rumour". He flexed all of his theatrical muscles for years of performing. With any luck, he could get the merc to drop his guard.

"Crimson Dawn...." the merc looked him up and down "bit mad to send a runt like you down here on his own. Still, you guys are mad". He lowered his blaster, but didn't pocket it. "Yes there's a Jedi, but she's ours, not yours".

"Ok, well doesn't look like you have her yet anyway" Dash said, pushing his luck as he feigned a glance around, quietly slipping his hands back in his jacket pockets. "We might be interested in the ship though, at the right price. What type is it?"

The merc scoffed, but nonetheless turned to look at the design, as Dash had hoped he would. He pulled his blaster out in one fluid move, pointing it square at the man's chest and firing wildly. The first two bolts hit there mark and the merc went down.

Dash stood there for a moment, gripping the blaster pistol hard. Surely there had been no other way.

Hera's body screamed at her as she ran, demanding to go faster and faster, but she forced it to slow. The Force moved through her like water pushing a boat through rushing rapids. However, if she moved too fast, she would lose the mercenaries chasing her too quickly. Looking back, she counted the bodies clamoring over each other. They occasionally raised an arm or blaster to fire, but quickly reconsidered as Hera would duck and weave just in and out of sight.

After a few minutes of running, Hera decided she had gone far enough. Moving into an alleyway, she stopped and coalesced the energies of the Force into her legs. A single, vertical leap propelled her to the rooftop of a small apartment building. The mercenaries turned the corner right as Hera disappeared over the rooftop. Leaving the men to scratch their heads Hera dashed back towards the ship.

She was back incredibly fast, just in time to see Dash standing over the body of the last mercenary. She could sense the life still in the still man's form, the holdout blaster was still set to stun after all. Smiling, she remarked, "Good job!" as she approached the alcove. Without a word, she hopped into the ARC fighter, the weapon locks clicked gently as she entered the cockpit and synced her kyber crystal with the starship.

R6 beeped unenthusiastically, not particularly happy that another body would be riding in his ship, but Hera still couldn't understand droid so she ignored him. Looking at Dash, she asked him a question with a certain joy in her tone, "Ready to go?"
