Ah always tricky that one, the fighting bit. You don't want to over do it but you don't want to be a pansy about it either. I recommend finding a middle ground between describing what your doing and giving room for the other person to work around it if they so choose. Check out the Dueling ring threads for a few good examples there.
I taught myself how to fight, and what I basically went by, when I started out, is generally the following:
1. Don't say ANYTHING about your opponent (other than referencing that you are attacking him or her and/or what you do in reaction to the opponent's actions).
2. Do what you can realistically do with your character. Never play the superhero. To me, it was more fun to lose a fight than to win one. You can imagine my win-loss ratio, based on that. ^________^
3. Describe where you want your attacks to go without saying that you successfully hit the other (Ie. "A punch thrown at the other's nose," rather than "A punch collided with the other's nose").
Another good move is to join a faction and do the training. The other person will gladly help you become a better RPer, and learning how to fight is usually an important part of the training process.
