Varyn was somehow both stunned and not at all surprised by what he saw in the Core. Of course they had been Joined. Of course all the work they'd gone to and all the death they'd suffered was for nothing. He felt that familiar anger building up within him and where there should have been hesitatino about kiling children, for Varyn there was only one, hard truth. They weren't children anymore and they weren't themselves. They were only the stolen bodies being used by the Killik hivemind.

He should have hesitated but he didn't. He would grieve later, no doubt forever haunted, but for the moment he darted forward, tearing into the weapon-wielding children. Maybe he should have reflected on the fact that he did that while the Sith didn't, but he didn't think on it now. This was the time for action.

Varyn attacks the weapon wielding children because what other option is there

Despite the pangs of exhaustion and fatigue she felt, Vahliri didn’t allow herself even a moment of rest. The half-Annfyn continued to sprint up the steps of the Core - rushing into the building and past the dead bodies of the CorSec soldiers. Her crimson saber curved into a defensive guard diagonally across her body, moving in preparation for whatever thread awaited them. She had suspicions, but the half-Annfyn desperately hoped she was wrong.

She wasn’t, of course.

Vahliri couldn’t help the way her jaw set into a firm line - anger immediately beginning to swell within. It was unbridled fury - her fingers curling around the hilt of her saber until her knuckles turned white. It was directed towards the Kilik monsters who would weaponize children in their hail-mary tactics. And it was anger at their own weakness - for not anticipating the deception and allowing emotion to cloud their judgment on the battlefield.

Without a single word, Vahliri stepped forward - long, graceful steps carrying her to close the distance between herself and the closest child. In any other scenario, she would have hesitated at the mere prospect. Perhaps the aftermath of it would haunt her for months or years to come. But in that moment, there was only a single reality that repeated within the half-Annfyn’s mind. They were already dead. The Kilik’s controlled their mind - and to cut them down was more a mercy than anything else.

Vahliri swiped her saber in clean, graceful strokes - deflecting the blaster bolts back to their origin without a second thought. The moment she was within range, the half-Annfyn carved her saber in a horizontal, wide arc - attempting to decapitate the Joined closest to her - before promptly moving to the next.

Vahliri marches forward - using her lightsaber to deflect the blaster shots fired at her. Once she is in range Vahliri attempts to decapitate the children closest to her and begin engaging the next.

It wouldn't take long for the defenders to take care of the kids. Their bodies moved almost in sync with one another as they reacted as one to @Vahliri Kahtal's attack, almost like an AI that could only feign its own intelligence. But they were just kids after all, no matter what hivemind they had been forcibly linked up to. They fell, one by one, squashed under the Sith champion's metaphorical heel like the bugs they were.

One might wonder, though, if the kids they used to be were witnesses to their own actions. When their hands punched, when their fingers pulled triggers, and when their bodies fell in the way of fiery blades, were they watching? Were they trapped and held hostage in their own bodies, helpless to prevent any of it... but still victims of the searing agony? When the first kid was cut down by Vahliri's blade, he fell quietly to the ground without so much of an utterance of pain. The hivemind did not care for its puppets. They had no voice of their own - not even to scream.

It was certainly mercy of some kind - the killing. There are, after all, worse things than death. One by one, the children fell, until the last kid stood rigid and ready in front of the doors between the defenders and the inner Core beyond. She was not even five feet tall, and her braided hair was tied off by silk red ribbons that matched her red wool socks and Vahliri's crimson red blade. As that blade came swinging toward her, there was no emotion on her face. There was nothing behind her eyes.

But when that blade connected, and her eyes briefly rose up to meet Vahliri's, there was the briefest moment of something. Fear, agony, desperation, and finally relief - it was gone a moment later, and the girl's body hit the duracrete floor with a quiet thump.

The path was clear. They could move forward.

Further into the Core, there were only four more kids left from the group of Joined that stood in their way. Their little fingers jabbed into buttons and flicked switches in the control room, sending instructions and commands here, there, and every which way. If they couldn't destroy the Core with spears and acid, they would overload it. Who would stop them? The Jedi had let them pass so easily.

When the defenders - Vahliri, @Varyn Atrix, @Caerllion of Cyfnos, and @Quin Leonkri - entered the room, they caused the children to panic. If they couldn't overload it, they would shut it down. One of them broke the glass on the emergency shutdown, and the entire facility was plunged into darkness. The Core began to make a series of horrible noises as its processes were unceremoniously cut off and it was forced to a stop.

Millions would lose power, Corellian shipyards within the Core's range would need to be moved elsewhere, and it would have to be repaired extensively for months or even years before it would be operational again. But, despite the losses, millions of lives had been saved from the alternative.

CorSec soldiers flooded the room after the defenders and quickly grabbed the four kids. They would be cuffed and shuffled off, but spared. The captain approached the group of four, an unreadable expression on her face.

"There were...many losses, but I thank you all for coming in defense of Corellia," she stated plainly. "We- we will take things from here."
