DESCRIPTION
Killik Flareships are huge capital ship analogs manufactured by the Killik Hives, smaller than the massive Shardships, but less common and more specialized in their function. Although no 2 Flareships are identical, the type is generally a kilometer and a half in length, placing it roughly in the category of a star destroyer in the Anaxes War College classification system. They consist of a resin-reinforced steel frame, containing engines, weapon emplacements and other systems, to which are affixed several large asteroids. These serve dual purpose as armor and sources of ammunition for the ship's prime weapon, it's reason for existence.

Although they are heavily armed in the conventional sense, this is merely in support of the Flareship's centerline-mounted lithoid vapor flare projector, perhaps the most powerful spaceborne weapon in the Killik arsenal. This weapon, referred to colloquially as the "paint stripper" by those who have faced it in battle, works by ingesting material from the asteroids attached to the ship's frame, vaporizing them in a fission chamber, and ejecting the highly charged, super-heated results through an acceleration matrix. This results in a plume of energetic heavy elements that can cause damage out to a range of 2,000 kilometers, the plume being up to 5 kilometers in width. The weapon's power is sufficient to destroy outright anything smaller than a corvette in scale, and is capable of overloading the shields, blinding the sensors, fouling the weapons and ablating the top layer of armor off of anything larger. This is usually done as prelude to a massed conventional attack, during which those effected by the plume would be mostly defenseless.

In counterpoint to the devastating power of the lithoid vapor flare, the weapon does have a significant drawback in the form of cool-down time between firings. Purging the thermal regulators and processing new material for the next firing takes no less than 3 rounds, and can be interrupted by attacks on the firing array; by necessity, the Flareship's magnetic seal must be deactivated prior to firing, and without its protection the ship is extremely fragile in many places. Supporting fighters and capital ships will do their best to prevent any attacks by enemy fighters, gunships and capital ships from getting through, of course.

Flareships are rare, and typically form the core of large Killik fleets. Capable of turning the tide of a space battle, they are an obviously tempting target for bombers and starfighters, and are typically guarded by swarms of Dartships.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Even if one were able to get a Flareship away from the Killiks, they are still technically classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners would require extra licensing to operate one legally, and would receive increased scrutiny by authorities. Even then, they are ridiculously expensive to operate; only a relatively large faction or particularly wealthy government would be able to afford it without swiftly bankrupting themselves. An individual would stand no chance. But, as Flareships are typically not captured intact, let alone sold on the open market, this is a moot point.

To create a special weapon ship for the Killik Hives.

Killik Flareships are available only to Killiks and to groups affiliated with the Killik Hives. They may only be used as part of approved events.
