Biography
Kavi Medah was born into a large family on Iridonia. The youngest of nine siblings, she lived in their family home with her parents, siblings, and extended family. The Medah family business included trading and marketing and ranged from completely legal endeavors to dealings with the outskirts of the criminal underworld. Kavi was always considered "the easy child"; she didn't fuss, could be left to her own devices, and was overall a happy, social child. The first signs of her force-sensitivity came when she was five years old and began summoning her toys from across the room. She also began exhibiting athletic abilities beyond what was typical for her age group. Her family, though initially mystified, had the connections to gather information about similar cases, and quickly determined that Kavi must be force-sensitive. This was seen by most of the family as a great boon, and Kavi was privately coached in acrobatics and asked to perform at events, using her natural abilities to greatly enhance the spectacle. Despite the increasing demands on her, Kavi remained content. She enjoyed exploring and gaining control over her strange abilities, and was excited to feel like a useful part of the family. And so, her life continued in this manner, her days split between the normal pursuits of a child and the fantastical reality of her power. A shift occurred when she was twelve and her family observed another way the force manifested: in the ability to sway the minds of others. Kavi was then tasked with traveling with various relatives on business ventures to, as her brother Dio said, "Help move things along." She was tall, athletic, and able to pass as a young business associate, especially with the familial connection. The first few times weren't so bad. All she was expected to do was reach out to the person's mind and monitor their reactions while her relatives adjusted their deals accordingly. It was weird and slightly scary to Kavi, who up until this point had never felt anything but positive about her abilities. Her siblings comforted her, telling her that she wasn't doing anything wrong and that it was for the good of the whole family. Then it became worse. Kavi was with a cousin when a deal went sour. As she felt anger rise in the man they were speaking with, Kavi reached towards his mind, ready to calm him as she had done before. However, she was faced for the first time with a mind that recoiled and struggled against her intrusion. Panicking, Kavi applied more focus and energy and pushed back against the resistance. As she did so, a terrible chill settled in the back of her spine, deeper than cold, something dark and unpleasant. Desperately, she projected her desire for the man to leave and felt the terrible sensation of trampling through another's mind. After a few seconds, the man mumbled something about wanting to leave and exited. The chill didn't leave Kavi that day, nor the next. Her parents noticed the difference, it would have been difficult not to. They of course cared that their child was suffering, but were ill-equipped to help her and Kavi had no way of describing what happened during that trip. Nevertheless, Kavi never refused a request for assistance, and soon, that initial incident became one of many times she pushed past the boundaries of what felt right. At this point the nightmares began. Recurring night after night, the details differed, but the contents of the dream remained the same. In the dream, Kavi was among a crowd of many, all kneeling before a figure cloaked in dark robes. Kavi could scream, beg, push, or use any means she could think of to free the kneeling masses, to no avail, and inevitably, the figure would turn towards Kavi. This nightmare ended with that final image, the crude facsimile of Kavi's own face, deep within a hood, horns twisted and yellowing, and black pits for eyes where only a small orange glow emerged from each socket. She woke up crying and shaking. As a distraction, she threw herself into two activities: exercise and perfecting her social skills. The first was just an extension of her early acrobatics lessons. By now, Kavi was in her teenage years and considerably tall and muscular. She often volunteered to carry things for others, always wanting to prove helpful. In relation to her second goal, Kavi strived to leave everyone she talked to with a smile on their face. Inspiring positivity in others helped lessen the deep guilt Kavi carried, along with the memories of the minds she had bent to her family's will. The turning point came during a trip to the inner rim when Kavi was sixteen years old. After the day's business had concluded, fortunately without Kavi's intervention, she was free to explore. While going for a run, Kavi found herself drawn quite strongly to a tented encampment and the strong sense of calm that seemed to be emanating from it. The encampment turned out to be a small Jedi enclave. Kavi was invited in, the Jedi were charmed by her friendly demeanor. Of course, they could sense her force sensitivity; Kavi had never learned to mask her presence. If it wasn't already evident enough, Kavi openly talked about the strange aura surrounding the Jedi; strange only because she had never met another force user before. Kavi listened to them speak about the force, finally she had a name to put to her powers. Kavi spoke about the expectations placed on her by her family, leaving out any mention of invading minds. The truth was that Kavi had felt sick and tired for a long time. No longer was the drive to help her family stronger than the revulsion she experienced at the idea of pushing her way through another mind. She felt shame both for lying to the Jedi through omission, and also for being unhappy with her life. Still, she tentatively turned the conversation to how one becomes a Jedi. The Jedi gave her advice and responded to her questions, but explained that as she was still a minor, they had no authority to request that she train as a Jedi if her guardians were not in favor. Still, Kavi stayed at the enclave through the evening. Kavi returned to the suite her family was staying in, but her mind remained fixated on the Jedi she had met. That brief glimpse of belonging and understanding had Kavi forming a deep conviction; she would never again willingly allow that chilling darkness into her mind. Of course, that meant facing her family, telling them she would no longer use her abilities during business deals. It did not go well. She first spoke to her mother, who was on the trip with her. Her response was, “Kavi, you aren’t acting like yourself. Are you sick? Go lay down until you feel better.” Attempting to communicate with other relatives yielded similar responses. They were simply unwilling to believe that Kavi, who never complained, who always acted cheerful, was putting her foot down. Kavi felt terribly disheartened boarding the ship back to Iridonia. Each time she closed her eyes she glimpsed a flash of her nightmarish vision. It seemed to her as if something - perhaps the force - had steered her to this moment. In her mind there was no middle ground. If she stayed she would eventually be worn down by her family’s pressure. Now she had a fixed goal to aim for. It was easier than she expected. After she talked Dio into helping her, all it took was a few forged signatures, the credits Kavi had saved up, and a very overworked court clerk, and Kavi was (semi-legally) an emancipated minor. Kavi wanted to tell everyone she was leaving and where she was going but Dio pointed out that that would be a really stupid thing to do, and might make her preparation meaningless. They instead decided on a lie Dio would tell: that he had gotten her an apprenticeship with some reclusive academics and that maybe a bit of time away would allow her to reconsider her dedication to the family. In actuality, Kavi took a transport to Tython. She knew she should feel some sort of anxiety, but there was only calm certainty in her. Arriving on Tython, she followed the typical process for a young potential Jedi. With her enthusiasm and clear ability in the force, she was quickly inducted into the Jedi Order. She threw herself into early training, happier than she had been in a long time. Physical training came easily to her, and soon reaching for the force was another natural reflex. One subject she refused to engage with was anything to do with the ‘Jedi mind trick.’ She listened to theory about it, but nothing more. Her masters respected her reluctance and her training progressed past that small hurdle. As a padawan, she spent a good amount of time looking after and teaching younger Jedi trainees and engaged in more local Jedi matters. Much like in her childhood, Kavi jumped at any chance to help and felt pride in the community of the order. She didn’t forget her family, but it certainly was nice to be so connected to a community that shared her experiences and struggles with the force. Her nightmares had entirely disappeared. It wasn’t until she was 20 that Kavi went on more typical Jedi peacekeeping missions. The fight against the Sith was ever continuing, and Kavi was proving to be an able fighter. For her aptitude in lightsaber combat, calm disposition, and demonstrated willingness to uphold Jedi values, Kavi was granted the honor and responsibilities of a Jedi Knight. Now, she continues on this path she’s chosen, following the will of the force.
Skills and Weaknesses
Kavi is relatively adept in the force. She has been trained in basic telekinesis and force enhanced acrobatics. The bulk of her talent is in athletics and combat; she has a dedicated training routine and finds that she feels most connected to the force while active. Where she has not progressed in her training is in the more mental realm. Her reluctance towards any form of the mind trick also extends to other important aspects of training, such as force communication, healing others, and sensing intentions and emotions through the force. In each of these areas, Kavi is held back by her fear and shame related to her discomfort reaching out to others through the force.
Personality
Kavi is generally a very outgoing, energetic individual with a positive outlook on the galaxy. Seemingly endlessly cheerful, her willingness to give second, third, and fifth chances may get her in trouble. Her own sense of well-being is most contingent on her feeling of usefulness. Kavi is always on the lookout for ways to help out, and treasures the feeling of improving someone’s day. This habit of looking for external validation connects to her deep rooted insecurity about her own worth as a person.
