Lyra slumped against her seat as the broadcast finished.

She sat in the archives on Ajan Kloss, and what started out as another read through of ancient Jedi texts turned into a HoloNet nightmare. She hadn’t seen Oren for sometime, his last visit to showcase his new arm, but she didn’t expect to see him now, and on the news. In prison, according to the Sector Ranger. The revelation shocked her.

What hurt her was the fact that she was one of the reasons why.

When Oren rescued her from the thugs on Coruscant, she didn’t think it would lead to a chain reaction into his arrest. He saved her. Now, who was to blame more than herself? If she hadn’t been walking alone that night, if she hadn’t been so stupid as to cross those thugs, Oren wouldn’t have done what he did. He wouldn’t have been arrested.

Lyra held her face in her hands, guilty.

No.

She had to do something, anything, to make this right. She had to learn more, else Oren’s current fate could lead into something much worse.

Quietly, she closed her book, felt the data chip she had stolen that night in her pocket, and left the library.

It was a quick stop along the hyperlane. Corren was making his way Rimward once again to continue the investigations among Force-users and their organizations that had become priority number one. The little station in orbit was a quick refuel and a place to buy some grub before getting back on the trail. The Sector Ranger had taken a bite out of a sandwich when all the holovision terminals hanging from the roof of the cafeteria flipped over to a breaking news broadcast. That woman from Chief Hudson’s briefing on Coruscant was there, made up in her dress uniform. What was her name? Aran. Lieutenant Aran. She was an officer of higher rank and Corran’s instilled discipline subconsciously made himself sit up straight in the port cafeteria at the thought of it. Lt. Aran announced that she had captured a Jedi Master to the galaxy. The Ranger stopped mid-chew on his meal, instantly mesmerized by the broadcast.

Captured a Jedi Master? That’s incredible.

Truth be told, he was a little envious of her. The Lieutenant made it sound so easy and run-of-the-mill. Corran had seen at least one blue-saber Jedi perform feats that he would struggle to go toe-to-toe with. Still, justice was being carried out and the Ranger felt some form of professional comfort and joy from that. The officer who brought a Jedi into custody first then went on to detail that the arrest was merely the beginning. The case had expanded beyond just learning about the Jedi. There was now a nickname for the Hutt killer: The Arcanist. Lt. Aran also made mention of an accomplice to this red-saber wielder. Corran finally swallowed his bite, “So there might be two groups? Designated by color of their weapon? Seems like a dead giveaway. But…” There were still to many open questions. What did the Jedi know of this second group? Were they part of the Jedi Order? Rebels of it? How many were there? More importantly, what was their objective?

Not too soon after Lt. Aran had ended her proclamation that no force-user is above the law, Prime Minister Rue of the Free Worlds Alliance gave one of her own. The Sector Rangers were being merged with Coruscanti Security and increased funding along with it. Compared to even just a days ago, the Sector Rangers had just made a quantum leap in resources and reach. With support from Coruscant and the Free Worlds government, the strength of the Rangers was backed by the most powerful bodies in the Core worlds. Still, something was unsettling about it all. Were the Sector Rangers going to be the attack dogs of the powerful in the Core? Maybe it wasn’t that bad. Not yet, anyway.

Corran waved down one of the staff, “May I get this to go? Please and thanks.” Grabbing his bagged meal off the counter, he made way back to the Crimson Venture. He could eat on the way. There was way more to this fast-moving case than previously thought.

It0 studied the pellucid image of the Sector Ranger with as close a sense of fascination as his processor unit would allow. Nar Shaddaa had a reputation for lawlessness even by Outer Rim standards, but the droid had to acknowledge that the number of spectacular events that lit its carbon-blasted alleyways and smog-choked spires were too numerous to count in recent nights. Whispers of force-wielding maniacs seemed to fill every spicehouse and cantina from the Corellian Sector to New Vertica. Overall, the mood on the Smuggler’s Mood was one of baleful suspicion.

Had he possessed the requisite lips, the 2-1B would have pursed them thoughtfully. It was seldom law enforcement found themselves on the same side as the Hutts. Mere weeks after an infamous crimelord puts out a public bounty on all force users, the Chief of the Sector Rangers brazenly announces the arrest of a Jedi Master. The datapoints were too incongruous to draw any reliable meaning beyond the certainty that someone stood to make an obscene bundle of credits.

As an asset of the Crymorah Syndicate, the bulk of his patients were treated for blaster burns and vibroblade slices. If the Jedi bucked back against perceived persecution, It0 would have to make sure to review limb-reattachment procedures before long.

Drink was all Laeonas was focusing on at the moment. Correllian ale, while a bit expensive, had been his favorite drink for as long as he'd been drinking- which was low, even for someone as poor as he was (if the stereotypes were to be believed.)

His hair was a bit greasy- he'd been here for about an hour now, idly chatting with a few other bar patrons to do something with his time, besides gulp down an increasing amount of booze. The news had been blaring in the background, and as he ran a hand through his hair after a few strands fell forward, he caught a bit of sound. "...Jedi or not, all citizens are to abide by the laws and jurisdiction in place for the planet they are on."

"...eh?' what?" He muttered, not sure if he heard correctly. He shot looks all around him, a bit confused. "Did tha't lady on the holo just talk about Jedees?" He'd say, his mispronunciation and accent winning him weirdly amused looks, which started to agrivate him. "I'm sorry if yer ears are registerin' somethin' ta laugh at, but I asked a question- she said something about a JedI?" He'd repeat, enunciating heavily on the final bit. An aqualish rolled all four of his eyes before spitting something a "Yes." at him in his own language.

Laeonas just sat in moderate confusion and aggravation. "Were these people just so casual about Jedi's on galactic kriffin' news?!" He loudly thought to himself, suppressing the need to shout and just how ridiculous this entire situation was.

He'd only ever heard about the Jedi once or twice, about these legendary figures who swung laser swords that didn't spill blood when they cut men down. They had godlike abilities- lighting from fingers, lifting buildings out of the ground. His reaction was comparable to telling a man who had grown up to believe in fae' and angels that an entire spice ring of them had been arrested- it spawned so many questions that simply labeling it as awe or shock or disbelief couldn't fully describe it.

He'd watch the holoscreen with keen interest now. This was odd. Was it a coincidence that he had wound up in this cantina, at this time of night, right when the holoscreen was tuned into the right channel? It was comical. There couldn't be any explanation.

Definitely not.
