DESCRIPTION
The IV-9 RangeMaster is a scout ship produced by Barancar Action Systems, a venerable Outer Rim starship manufacturer based on the planet Barancar in the Tion Cluster. Highly prized by trailblazers and adventurous individuals, the IV-9 is most commonly found on the fringes of Galactic civilization, actively pushing out the frontiers of known space.

The IV-9 RangeMaster is about 24 meters in length, not much bigger than some heavy starfighters, and consists of a cylindrical habitation section atop a smaller cargo bay, with engines located at the rear and on outrigger mounts. The ship has a crew of 2, although only 1 is actually necessary, with space for up to 2 passengers. Consumables are sufficient for up to 4 months in space, with an additional cargo capacity of 20 standard tons. For defense, the IV-9 is equipped with a medium deflector shield, and has a single forward-firing medium laser cannon. Though it can only make 70 MGLT, maneuverability is comparable to some starfighters. The ship is equipped with a class 2 hyperdrive, with a class 10 backup for emergencies; there are also 2 navicomputers, 1 primary and 1 backup. This redundancy is important, as the IV-9 often operates far from civilized space, with little chance of help in the event of a breakdown.

Notably, the IV-9 is equipped with a small science lab, which doubles as a medical bay. In general, the ship's interior is well appointed, providing decent amenities and as much privacy as is possible in such a small space for crew and passengers on long-duration missions. The ship is also equipped with a long-range comm array, allowing it to communicate with the Galactic HoloNet even from remote locations. This is important for scouts sending back their findings, and for friends, family, employers and authorities who wish to stay in touch with scouts out in the field.

The IV-9 RangeMaster has become an important element of efforts to chart the remote regions of the Galaxy, and is statistically the first modern vessel many previously un-contacted civilizations will encounter. They are an icon of the explorer community. Though uncommon in more developed parts of the Galaxy, IV-9s are easy enough to buy, steal or otherwise acquire.

LEGALITY
Legal. Scout ships such as the IV-9 RangeMaster are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and are not restricted in most systems.

INTENT
To create a standard scout ship suitable for explorers.
