DESCRIPTION
The Invincible-class star cruiser is an ancient, nearly obsolete class of capital ship which was originally manufactured by a joint venture between the Rendili StarDrive corporation and Vaufthau Shipyards Limited, a venerable starshipwright which was absorbed by the Corellian Engineering Corporation some time before the Galactic Civil War. The Invincible is one of the oldest classes of warship still in active service, so old that it predates the Anaxes War College classification system; these vessels were originally known as "dreadnaughts", a classification which was appropriate in the time when they first appeared.

The Invincible-class star cruiser is the heir to a design lineage which can be traced back to the earliest days of the Republic, during the trade wars which were fought between the rival worlds of Coruscant and Alsakan for dominance over the fledgling Galactic government. The battleships fielded by the Alsakani were some of the most powerful of their time, drawing on inspirations from even further back in history, including the gargantuan polyremes of Xim the Despot and the robot battlerockets of the mad cyborg Agorander. Though they did not bring ultimate victory to Alsakan, these ancient vessels were widely copied in the Galaxy at large, and especially by the Republic Navy, which used them in their wars of expansion. The basic shape - a blunt cylinder, studded with weapons emplacements along its length and a cluster of engine pods at one end - proved highly versatile and easy to adapt to gradually improving technologies. Over the millennia, various manufacturers refined and updated the design, until finally it reached its arguable zenith during the twilight years of the Old Republic.

The Invincible is a massive ship, longer overall than even the Imperial-class star destroyer of a later era. The Invincible is 2,011 meters in length, placing it marginally in the "battlecruiser" category of the Anaxes War College system. Despite its great size, however, it has nothing approaching the firepower of its successors, armed with only 12 dual heavy turbolasers, 30 quad medium lasers, 6 concussion missile launchers and 6 tractor beams. The ship has only a small hangar bay for its size, capable of supporting 12 starfighters and 8 shuttles. The crew, while not as massive as some later vessels, still requires 23,000 beings to operate efficiently; it can also carry 6,000 passengers. Cargo capacity is a paltry 700 standard tons, with consumables for up to 1 year in space. Top speed, meanwhile, is only 40 MGLT, and the ship is equipped with a class 4 primary hyperdrive.

The first Invincible-class star cruisers entered service in the years just after the Ruusan Reformations, and as such, led an existence which was significantly different from that of their forebearers. During this period, the enemies of the past had been defeated; the Mandalorians had been humbled and the Sith were believed extinct. The standing military of the Republic had been abolished, and the Jedi had been relegated to diplomats and keepers of the peace. In the post-Ruusan Republic, responsibility for defense had been placed on local militaries at the sector and system level, who vied for power among one-another as much as with outside threats. Giant capital ships such as the Invincible had few practical applications, but this was not to say they were not used.

During the High Republic Era, warships such as the Invincible were status symbols. Systems and sectors which could afford to buy them used them to show off to their rivals, able to brag that they had the spare resources to operate such monsters. They were seldom actually used, however; during this period, it was not uncommon for vessels of this type to go for decades, even centuries without firing a shot in anger. For this reason, Invincible-class star cruisers had exceptionally long careers; with little wear and tear from combat and a glacially slow weapons development cycle during peacetime, they could be kept in service for decades, even centuries without even major refits.

Most Invincible-class star cruisers drew first blood only during the Clone Wars, when many of the Republic's local navies were called up to fight alongside the Grand Army of the Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. In point of fact, these vessels served on both sides of the conflict; systems and sectors which had once been part of the Republic sent their own pre-war assets into battle, and not a few naval battles from this period are recorded as having had similar or even identical ships facing off against one-another. Though hundreds of years old, Invincibles were often the most powerful vessels in the inventory of a sector or system fleet, and though outmatched against more modern designs in most cases, they proved surprisingly sturdy; with their thickly armored hulls and large crews, they could absorb a tremendous amount of punishment, although their firepower still left a great deal to be desired.

After the Clone Wars, the Invicibles initially returned to their former role. However, during the Imperial era, the independent sector and system fleets were gradually reduced or abolished outright, leaving the future of these aging battle-wagons uncertain. Many went on to careers outside the Empire; sold off by former Republic worlds, they wound up in the service of small independent navies, such as the Corporate Sector Authority's internal picket fleet, or the Centrality Navy, where many remain in some capacity.

In the present day, the old Invincible-class star cruisers are entering the twilight of their useful lives. Long ago eclipsed in power and utility by more modern designs, those few that remain in service are at least centuries old, and will require drastic modernization if they are to endure, a prospect that many of their operators are unlikely to see as worthwhile. Many have already ended their days as hulks, converted into orbital depots and semi-stationary defense platforms, or at long last hauled off to the breakers yard. Some lucky few have been preserved as museum ships, or have been mothballed by governments undecided on what to do with them. Even so, a few of these old soldiers still serve in the role for which they were intended. Though relics of a long-lost era of peace, they face the future with battle-scarred doonium and open missile tubes, and are unlikely to go quietly to their fates...

LEGALITY
Restricted. Invincible-class star cruisers are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities. Even then, they are ridiculously expensive to operate; only a relatively large faction or particularly wealthy government would be able to afford it without swiftly bankrupting themselves. An individual would stand no chance.

INTENT
To bring a ship from Legends canon into our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
Invincible-class star cruisers are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They maybe be operated by factions, however, with proper staff oversight.
