Val exhaled and was still doubled over. This was moments before the Ranger commanded her to use the fire escape. She glared at him at once, “Do I look like I’m in any condition to-” She heard the droid voices, cursing at once as she climbed onto a dumpster to reach the fire escape.

She wasn’t exactly known for her athleticism, nowhere close to a trained Ranger or soldier. Nevertheless, she was doing her best to quickly climb up. One of her designer shoes fell off to land on the Mando’s face, but she didn’t notice. She screamed as a shot went off, barely missing her. It was almost enough for her to let go and fall a bit, but she grabbed on again with one hand. If Roland was climbing up beneath her, he would get a full barefoot to the face as Val pressed off to keep climbing in a scramble.

Full blown panic set in as she climbed for her life, her heart pounding against her chest. She finally reached the top, grabbing the edge of the roof and hoisting herself up. She took a few steps and collapsed on the ground, rolling onto her back. Her eyes were wide with shock and she could still hear the droids on the ground.

“I want to go home…”

The Captain had intentionally brought the ladder down on the fire escape for her to jump to. Maybe princesses don't jump. But instead opted for climbing on top of a smelly dumpster. There wasn't much more thought given to it as the man's helmet was smacked by the woman's barefoot. Below them the shoe hit a step and then spun end over end until falling back down to the ground level.

"Hey" The hood of the captain was thrown off his helmet. Blaster fire struck the railing just a few centimeters from his hand. Valeska rushed ahead, clambering as fast as she could. Roland was able to keep up and didn't have to worry about being slowed down. They knew where they were now without a doubt.

Practically diving onto the roof from the fire exit, the Captain would narrowly avoid the stuttering blaster fire. Holes ripped through his cloak causing smoke to rise from the punctures. Looking around the roof, Roland saw there was a freight elevator on the far end of the roof. The blaster fire stopped now that both Valeska and Roland were out of sight. The heavy clanking and foot falls echoed up off of the hard industrial walls.

The sound of sirens were growing closer.
"Are you hurt? That sniper might still be out there so stay down." He would say as he came back to her and dropped to a knee. Looking her over, even if she said no, the Captain wanted to make sure she was fine. People in these situations weren't always aware.

"I used to work out of the Naboo office you know. Ranger Winters, he might still be around there." He said trying to talk to her a little. There came a crash from somewhere down in the alley but the Mandalorian didn't look over the edge and risk getting shot. The bounty droids would have made a different kind of noise if they were trying to scale the building. Maybe they were looking for stairs. "What's your favorite place on Naboo?" The ranger took the time to reload his ascension attachment on his backup blaster before putting it back in its low profile holster.

Roland looked towards the freight elevator again. As if on queue, the light over the door began to glow. The sound of the industrial lift beginning to descend towards the lower level would barely be audible unless he had been paying attention. Damn, these droids are serious. Like a count down, the turbo lift level numbers were decreasing, they had less than a minute before the number dropped to 1 and then started counting back up again. "I always liked the architecture of Naboo over Chandrila."

Val gazed up at the sky, scowling as the Mando told her to ‘stay down’. She had little intention of doing anything else. What baffled her was him then starting to make conversation. She looked over at him, her eyes wide as he casually loaded his weapons as if they were on a picnic. Was he one of those cops that talked people off the ledge?

“Lake Country,” She said after a while, still vacantly staring up, “Away from Theed and away from the cities. It’s just you and your thoughts, good or bad. The lake is crystal clear,” She could hear the shuffling and explosions around them along with the ding of the repulsorlift, “You can have the shittiest day ever and you go out there and the very air is different. You inhale and it courses through your body all the way to your fingertips. You close your eyes and hear every little bird and creature around you and then you hear it….just nature. Just silence. No industry, no whizzing of speeders.”

It was an entirely foreign concept to anyone from the Core or Inner Rim worlds. She could hear the droids make their advance and she tilted her head to look at the precautions he was taking, looking into the T visor.

“Am I going to die here, Captain?”

Roland looked back towards Valeska after her initial answer. Her detailed description, the emotion in her tone told the man she genuinely liked that place. That further told him she didn't want to really run away from home. Wanting the freedom and her own identity to discover, let alone express it was something he could understand well enough.

"I wouldn't want to burn the bridge that leads back to that place." Everyone made choices in life that would decide their fate. There were certain things that couldn't be helped, like who your parent's were. Roland liked Naboo. Maybe even more than that. Hell, he had thoughts of retiring on the planet, getting a small home to come and go from. But that was both a foreign concept to most Mandalorians and an impractical dream for the Rook.

Looking at the elevator's number climbing back up, he heard a question coming back to the situation at hand. The visor turned to look more centered at Valeska once again. "Nobody's dying today except those droids." His hand produced the cylindrical hilt of a lightsaber with practiced ease. He had been sparing and training with it for months. Years now, and I barely use the things.

"I'll be right back. Stay low." He repeated the warning since it seemed like the Princess needed it. Without another word the Captain turned away from her and left cover. With a burst from his jetboots he ended up on the far side of the roof, on top of the elevator structure and then turning to wait. It wasn't long. A single warning beep came before the the final ding.

The industrial elevator doors parted to reveal the two haxion bounty droids. They're pugilists that like to get in close and smash their opponents. He remembered reading reports. But normally they don't deal with lightsaber wielding enemies as much. The heavy metallic footfalls preceded the downward view the Captain had over the two droids. Once the first one was out, he took a step forward and dropped, turning as he fell and facing the one still inside the elevator. If a droid could have an expression of surprise, it would have probably shown it. This time the droid didn't say anything as it saw the Mandalorian. The sound of the Roland igniting the saber would be slightly muffled as it activated directly into the body of the droid. It's flattened blade slicing through the droid with ease.

The lead bounty droid heard the commotion and turned. A back handed arm passed over the man's head as he dropped low. Pulling the lightsaber from the smoking chassis, it jerked for a moment in death spasms as Roland turned toward the still active droid. Before the droid could follow up with another attack its closest leg was cut off just below the knee, causing it to lose balance and fall. With a quick follow through, Roland brought the lightsaber around and stabbed into the droid, giving it a good wrench followed by dying sparks.

“Wait don’t leave-” She barely got the words out before the Ranger jetted away with his boots. Panic began to set in as she felt alone and abandoned again as she had in that underground tunnel. It was an instant trigger, one she didn’t even know could happen. Her chest rose and fell quickly from her erratic breathing as she watched the elevator doors open. She was frozen in place, eyes widening as the droids began to appear.

However, she never could have predicted what happened next. Val quickly sat up as the saber was ignited, the humming she had only read about resounding as the Ranger whirled the blade around to dismantle the droids. The entire sequence of events was over before she knew it, and the droids were nothing more than broken and spare parts.

Was he….a Jedi too? That didn’t make sense. Her family had often called for the services of Jedi, but none of them were ever a part of the Rangers.

Val slowly rose to stand at last, clutching at her ribs.

“Are you...supposed to have one of those?” She couldn’t help but ask, suspicion in her tone.

Looking between the downed machines, both were no longer moving. Smoke rose from where plasma had cut through combat rated durasteel. The Captain turned more to face the Princess as she rose into view. There still hadn't been a shot made towards him as far as he could tell. A sniper would have had a difficult shot and the sound of an incoming patrol ship told Roland the sharpshooter had cut and run by now. Using the droids also as a a distraction. That was a smart tactic.

The thrumming engines gave way to not one but two separate local law enforcement patrol gunships decorated in Chandrila Defense Fleet colors. In response to Valeska's question he deactivated the weapon and returned it to his belt. "I checked it out of evidence and signed all the forms...if that's what you're asking." Roland's voice became louder towards the end as the ship's began getting closer and their engine's louder. One came close with the side opening to reveal officers, and another with one of the Sector Ranger's aboard.

With a gesture he made sure to give Valeska a hand onboard the ship. Staying close by he would make sure she found a seat onboard the ship whether she was paying attention or not. There was no sign of further hostiles but the Captain wouldn't be truly satisfied until she was back on Naboo.

Val simply stared at him as he casually mentioned he ‘checked it out of evidence’.

“That still doesn’t sound..legal…” She grumbled under her breath. Val could hear the transports arriving and she sighed. She was grateful to be away from where she was, but the thought of going back to Naboo sounded miserable. Nevertheless, the good Captain had risked his life enough for her. If she would get in trouble again, she would do it while he was off the clock and after he had done his job so he wasn't accountable.

She watched him get into the ship and was about to step over, but she looked down. It was a barefoot that pressed into the edge of the ship. Val stepped back immediately, “I need my other shoe,” She said flatly. Those shoes were expensive, and she was no uncivilized heathen to be wandering around without a shoe.

Val was entirely stubborn enough to die on this hill. She promptly began an attempt to climb back down the fire escape to try and scavenge for the lost shoe. This would go much faster if the Ranger helped, but she didn’t expect him to understand such things.

Once she had her shoe, she would be in the ship and they would be off to Naboo.

Roland's hand waited in vain it seemed. "Princess..." His insistent tone hiked up with the singular word. The man's jaw clenched and the others in the ship looked between them. Mandalorians were known for the hard headed nature, and not just because of their helmet wearing ways.

The Captain would take a breath in and let out a sigh. His cloaked shoulders dropped a little Was that it? Did she want to show off she was more stubborn than a Mandalorian? Maybe boss a Ranger captain around in front of the local cops or just anyone else. Whatever. Retracting the hand he let it drop to his side.

Stepped back off the ship and back onto the roof next to the redhead. "I'd appreciate it if you were on the ship by the time I get back." Walking past the Princess, Roiland would go around the ship's edges and clear of its engines to an open portion of the roof edge. The armor clad Captain stepped off the roof and plummeted down only a few meters before his jetboots ignited and allowed him to control his still rapid dissent enough for him to trot into the ground level alleyway.

The Mandalorian was still holding his sidearm in his other hand. Having seen where the footwear had dropped, the man picked it up. It was a little dirty and scuffed not that he had paid much attention to their condition before.

The jetboots ignited once again as Roland made his way back up to the roof, landing in the open space. Approaching the young woman he handed the shoe over. "I suggest more practical footwear the next time you travel."

Turning to look towards Ranger Linden he would give them a direction. "You fly a HWK right? What's the class on that?" he already had ideas forming about the drone barge remaining on Chandrilla. "Class 2. Zar parked not too far and said he's been trying to get through the local drama." That only earned a murmur from Roland. It was no faster than his own ship. But if they flew together then they would have a bit more defense. It also made sense why the arrival had been late. Highly populated planets meant sometimes traffic was just bad even for the people trying to keep order. That, and the fact that his own Rangers weren't able to do their job. He knew it was residual built up aggression and frustration. The pain from being shot was starting to come to the forefront of his mind.

"Ridealong time then..." He the man made sure his other Sector Ranger was reporting in and everything was showing alright. "Pilot, change course. We're taking the princess back to Naboo. Now." The hospital would just be a waste of time at this point and be more of a risk since both Elais and that sharp shooter were both still at large. Those were just the possible dangers they knew about.

Val winced as the Ranger more or less scolded her about the shoe. It wasn’t like she purposely wore ill-fitted shoes for a kidnapping. She silently took the footwear and pointedly looked away, grumpy at being chastised. Val had always wanted to rebel against being a princess, but she never realized just how much she acted like one. The fact that she lived in a bubble her entire life was becoming more and more apparent by the second. It took her a long moment to realize that perhaps the shoe wasn’t exactly that much of a crisis. Not that she would ever admit it to buckethead.

She was quiet during the journey, leaning back in her seat to relax. There was a medic aboard that finally came over to look at her injuries, taking her back to bandage her up properly. Val began to feel a lot better after an hour or so, her breathing returning to normal without too much strain.

The journey would take some time and Val wasn’t exactly sure anyone here was in the mood to talk to her. She curled up in her seat, hugging her knees and leaning against the window. She was used to being waited on hand and foot and no one even gave her a sideways glance here. Val had no idea that she had gotten used to a certain way of life and anything outside of it was a jarring shock.

“I’m….sorry…” She muttered after a long time, glancing over at buckethead, “For being difficult,” It felt like acid in her mouth to say those words. Her ego was bruised more than her ribs.

His tone came out a bit more harsh than he had meant it. His lack of a proper face for her to see didn't help matters. The gunships would take them to where Roland's ship was parked after awhile. The Captain took the time to make arrangements with the local authorities and communicate with the other Sector Ranger forces in the area. One of his Rangers would stay behind and lead further investigations on the crime scene left behind as well as direct further search for the parties involved. When the medic came to look at Roland he moved them away with a wave. To look at the injury they would have to take off the plate, and he wasn't going to do that here and now.

The patrol ship crew and the other Ranger kept to themselves for the ride. If it wasn't for that quiet, Roland may not have heard the Princess's apology. His eyes looked at her from behind his visor and could tell she was having difficulty with the admitting it. A pause hung in the air and the ship would descend to the hangar where the Sector Ranger's ships were parked securely.

"I accept your apology." They were the typical standard response in basic. But Roland meant those words as he stared at Valeska and watched her response. The Princess was telling him she regretted the way she acted. Maybe she would prove it in the long term.

"Come on. We're switching rides." He winced a little and moved towards the opening door, allowing them to disembark. Across the hangar sat the peculiar appearance of the Captain's personal firespray. The other Sector Ranger would head to their own ship and meet them in orbit. This way they would get to Naboo on a low profile but with considerate protection.

Roland's voice would seemingly ask out of the blue. "Does it snow on Naboo?" His droids would head towards the ship and go inside, first to search and then to begin recharging. They didn't find anything and his ship's security looked fine. It would just be the Princess and the Captain aside from the droids and the distant hangar crew. The second patrol gunship that had been flying as an escort remained hovering nearby.

Val was used to everyone being formal, and she wasn’t entirely phased by the Ranger slipping back into his role. She was silent the rest of the time until he mentioned the ships were being switched. This time she made sure to firmly keep her shoes on as she followed the Ranger out. Val glanced around as she watched the other figures beginning to take off in different directions.

She followed him into his oddly shaped ship, never having seen one quite like it before. Like before, Val settled into her seat, watching the droids with mild amusement. She expected a very boring and silent ride - buckethead didn’t seem the type to actually engage in conver-

Her eyes widened when he abruptly asked about snow. Val turned her head to look at him, green eyes blinking curiously. She couldn’t tell any kind of expression and it vaguely felt like talking to an actual bucket. Then again, she couldn’t exactly be surprised that of all things to talk about, he would bring up the weather. It was effort made, and she had to give merit there.

“It does along the Gallo Mountains and in some parts of lake country,” She said after a moment, “We always wish it would snow around Life Day, but it hasn’t for over fifty years,” A small smile came to her face, “My sister and I used to run to the windows every morning to check for snow. We did that every year until the past few years,” The smile faded slightly. Being Queen had begun to wear on her sister.

“Have you seen snow before?” Val asked the man. The Core city worlds weren’t exactly known for any kind of weather outside of smog.

The man tried picturing parts of Naboo he had seen but covered in snow. The curved green domes and wide streets dusted with white powder. When the princess mentioned life day, he imagined a horde of wookiees mixed in a large party. Roland found himself smiling at the thought.

"You know...in Mando'a there's a term, or rather a state of mind I guess. On the way in, the Princess would have been able to see an locked armory, several prisoner containment cells and the spartan accommodations the Captain kept. The private quarters were locked and terminal access was restricted in case the Princess decided to wander off inside the small vessel or get an idea to start touching things without permission.

"Cin Vehtin..." He said it partially to himself. A new beginning was the step foundlings received in a way. But understanding and moving on, giving people the opportunity to do better and forge new paths was part of living. "I've been to a few places with snow, yeah."

Sliding into the pilots seat of the ship. "Buckle up." The nearest one was the co-pilot seat in the cockpit but she was fine choosing one of the other passenger seats. It wouldn't be long before the Cobalt Viper left the hangar and was escorted by the LAAT/IE.

“Cin..Vehtin,” She attempted to say it just like he did, but it came with a Naboo accent. She sat down in the seat nearest to him, buckling herself in. Val hadn’t missed the armory and containment cells as she passed through the ship. She wasn’t surprised to see it, but it certainly made her feel out of place being here. Nothing about the Captain made her feel unwelcome, however.

She was silent as the ship left the hangar and took to the skies. Val knew the next stop was home, and she had mixed feelings about it. She sat in silence for a long time - she was used to it on her formal trips. However, she began to remember that this wasn’t exactly a diplomatic trip. Perhaps she could be less uptight here.

“All right, Captain Rook, let’s play a game,” Val said after a while, glancing over at him, “Starting simple. We ask each other a question, but it can’t be the same question flipped. You can start with a question. And you can’t pass!”

Hearing the girl try to speak Mando'a, he looked over his shoulder towards her and giving her a nod. "Kandosii." Maybe she had a knack for languages. Maybe that would be something they talked about during the trip. The Captain knew a few languages himself but he made sure the transition to high orbit happened seamlessly.

His fingers flipped a few switches and conserved power by cutting power from the weapon systems during their transition to hyperspace. Frugality was useful when he found himself paying out of pocket in the outer rim. Plus it lowered their signature when arriving in system and would seem more like an ordinary light freighter than a heavily armed spacecraft. The man never found it peculiar the way he could think like a criminal.

With the gunship traded out as an escort for the fellow fellow Sector Ranger, it wouldn't be long before they safely transitioned hyperspace. Valeska brought up a new topic for discussion, or rather a game to play. "Alright." Since he had a question in mind he didn't see any harm in humoring her. "What languages do you know?"

Val thought about the question for a moment, “I know several regional Naboo languages and also Gungan Basic. I can understand most droids, and… we’ve been told to learn Huttese to talk our way out of any potential criminal situations,” She had to chuckle at that. It was a rather ugly language and she had to scrunch her face in odd expressions to speak it, “I studied Olys Corellisi and other ancient languages as part of my schooling. I can understand many more languages than I can actually speak.”

She had been given very strict schooling and was groomed for nobility from a young age. Part of that meant learning many languages and proper etiquettes and customs from multiple planets. She knew when to slurp her food, when to do certain hand gestures, when to be quiet as a mouse. Every bit of her life had been planned and mapped out.

“Are you still connected to your Mandalorian roots?” Val asked curiously. It wasn’t till she asked it that she realized the question may have been too personal. Oh well, it was out there. He could answer or not and it wouldn’t bother her either way.

<"Sometimes understanding your foe keeps you from having one."> He said in Huttese. The early career of the Mandalorian had seen him traveling with scrupulous thugs and doing the dirty work for the scum of the galaxy. His father had often used it to mean 'beat your enemy to the punch' but Roland wasn't sure if that was what it really meant. He had picked up the language long before his adoption into the Mandalorian way of life thanks to the Crimson Dawn.

The Princess impressed him and didn't seem like the type to lie about her language skills. "At your age I only new a little bit of shryiiwook beyond huttese and mando'a." The man cleared his throat in thought. "Just a night of casual convo leaves my throat always hurt worse than when I've attended a heavy-isotope concert."

Roland adjusted his seating a little more to be comfortable. Unclasping the cloak that still had the holes earned from earlier. Looking at it the fabric, he stared at the faded purple snake emblem adorned on the back. Moving it off to the side into a bundle he would look back out at the blue tunnel of hyperspace again.

The hum of the engine filled the cockpit for a moment before the Captain answered without looking. "That depends on who you ask." His mind went to the idea of other Rooks. It had been a long time since he had seen a sigil of a rawl other than his own or a set of jaig eyes on a leader's helmet. "I'm not the type to send my family a happy Life Day message every standard year...if that's what your asking."

Taking a deep breath in he let out a sigh. "Speaking of family...are you going to try running away from yours again?" He didn't mean any time soon. But just in general. The girl was not happy with things as they were on some level. Time would tell what changes she made for herself. There were no delusions she had free choice to take up liberal arts on corellian community college or do something beyond his (or the Queen's) control. He wondered if this was how Otto felt when he first encountered the young Mandalorian.

“At my age?” Val had to ask, unable to keep the laugh from spilling at that. It was a carefree and breezy laugh, one that revealed a different side of her than the proper and formal princess persona. She mentioned nothing on the topic of his age, far too polite to tease someone when she had only just met them.

However, the reference to a heavy-isotope concert piqued her curiosity, “Heavy isotope...I’ve never been to a concert like that,” Val mused longingly aloud, “My family would never approve of it. I do admittedly listen to it though,” She mentioned sheepishly, thinking back to silly things she did to get around strict royalty rules.

Val had a curious look on her face as he mentioned not keeping in touch too much with his family. She had meant more whether he had obligations and duties that would immediately call him to a Mandalorian cause. However, she didn’t clarify the question as that wasn’t part of the game.

She almost winced when he asked his question, looking away to idly stare out a window. There was nothing but the hum of the ship for a moment, her thoughts far away. It almost appeared as if the game had ended, but she spoke after a while, “Yes,” She said flatly, “It’s very likely I will find some new excuse to do so. But I’ll make sure it’s not your problem,” Val smiled at him, gazing at his T visor and only guessing she was looking where his eyes were.

“Do you feel at home with the Rangers and on Coruscant?” Val knew that the sight of a Mandalorian made a lot of people nervous. They had a bloody and aggressive history and anytime one walked into a scene, whispers rang out.

An image of the princess rocking out in some cliche tower came to mind after hearing Valeska respond. Part of him wondered if she liked it or was just doing it to rebel. The psychology of a young naboo princess was not his area of expertise but he pressed a few buttons, bringing up some music choices.

Hearing her answer honestly at his question made him give a slight murmur of approval. But now they were sharing information and getting to know one another. Giving her him information about himself, she volunteered her own in turn. He was glad to see the princess becoming more comfortable. The events that had transpired had shaken her but Valeska seemed to have recovered from that state . "Oh well thanks." He said in mock enthusiasm adding a chuckle that turned into a stifled cough.

"Grab that case with the red sigil on it." He answered her latest question first with a nod towards the bulkhead near Valeska's seat. Taking his hands away from the controls, the Captain decided he needed to devote attention to the pain that had been ignored up until then. Roland didn't mind she asked a two part question. But he had to think on it. His hands worked to begin unclasping the plate where he had been hit. The injury underneath hadn't been looked at by the medics but with some shipboard supplies he kept, he would maybe have at worst a scar.

"OSIK!" Trying to move his right elbow any higher than his shoulder caused a spiderweb of pain to spread around where he had been hit. "Karking Coruscant." The captain shook his head. "No...I wouldn't consider Coruscant home."

Val raised an eyebrow as he asked her to get the case with ‘red sigil on it’. She glanced at said box and then at him with mild amusement, “You mean that medpac?” She said as she handed it over. The princess watched him open it up and try to lift his arm up. Val winced slightly as he cursed, not used to anyone doing that in her presence usually. It was surprisingly delightful and a reminder that she was truly not in the presence of stuffy royalty.

“Let me do it,” She said with a tone of authority. Val rose to stand, moving over to help remove the plate. She glanced down at the injury, noticing the damage and the way the armorweave he wore underneath stuck to his skin, “I’ll have to cut some of this away,” Val said quietly, picking up the surgical scissors in the pack, “In case you’re giving me a skeptical look under the bucket, all royal family members are taught first aid skills. For me it was even more so since I volunteered often at emergency clinics. Also helped with my sister’s anti AMS initiatives.”

She cut through the cloth as she spoke, revealing a horrible and oozing burn. Val grabbed some materials to clean up the area around it, “This won’t be pleasant, but you already know that,” Val muttered as she got to work.

He hesitated and looked towards the Princess, scrutinizing her for a moment before allowing her to help. One eyebrow rose a little more at the verbage. It seemed she expected that though. "Really?" He said a bit impressed. The more exposed the injured area became the more the Mandalorian felt like he had the an unrealized sunburn of the worst kind. "The more severe the shot, the less painful it is. Or...so I hear." A his of pain came from him as she worked a bit. Thankfully he had neither suffered a fatal wound yet nor a third degree burn. Mostly because he tried to avoid getting shot in the first place, even with armor.

"Why'd you volunteer?" Pain wasn't something new to Roland. If anything he had a focus of mind and instinct that was only earned after years of a harsh life. "While I know how to take care of this sort of thing it's better when you get help. So, thanks." That being said, getting shot still hurt like nine hells. "osik" he repeated it under his breath.

Dealing with the injury was going to have its own shortcomings in the days ahead. But nothing that wouldn't heal eventually and be no worse for wear. "Guess I'll be sleeping on my stomach for a couple of days." At least that way it would heal a little faster and prevent it from being irritated.
