[Outside Dantoo City] [Open to All]

The hologram flickered in a faint blue. The image of a well-fed man cut in and out sporadically; a sign that the recording had been done on some shoddy equipment or in a hurry. "The culprit has been nothing but a nuisance. Harassing caravans and stealing wares or grains. Some outlying settlements claim the group had been shaking down them for credits..." The portly human male fizzled in and out of view again, "I don't have much to offer besides the information held within this recording. The rumors of a dangerous Force User or Jedi are enough to scare off most, but the ruins of the old military outpost must contain all their ill-gotten gains with the galaxy. Some of that might suffice for a reward. With the rest of the galaxy focusing on the Core Worlds, I... we have no where to turn to." The image shuttered one last time before shutting down entirely.

Corran flipped the holodisk display in his hand over in his palm before returning it to his jacket pocket. The message had been relayed through several stations throughout the sector of Space. Likely some concerned village Alderman or merchant whose business was suffering from the situation. Corran hadn't met him yet, but he intended to once had had completed his investigation and hopefully the arrest. Whoever the man was, the Ranger felt he was right about one thing. All the focus was on the Core Worlds. The arrest of a Jedi Master. The politicking between the Jedi Order and the Sector Rangers. Most of the other experienced Rangers had flown off to other high-profile investigations. Being the rookie, Corran was left to handle the small cases. There wasn't much to go on, to be honest, but if it did turn out to be something and it had been ignored, the Chief would make heads roll.

The cloud-covered sky made the endless grain fields look grim. The young human pulled his cap down a bit as a wind blew by, making the fields wave like an ocean. The outpost he stood by was out aways from Dantoo City, but still held a bar, energy fueling, some tiny homes, and a self-pay rental station for speeder-bikes. Even a homey place like this could be unfriendly or tip off the so-called "bandit jedi" in the area, so the Ranger kept his badge tucked away under his jacket. "Even so," he mumbled to himself, "The informant believes the group is more than an individual, but a small gang. I might need some local help on this thing." If the recording has gone beyond the system, or even the sector, maybe some other law enforcement would come along. Hell, he would take even bounty hunters and treasure seekers if it came to it. With a pistol on his hip and a travel pack on his back, Corran looked conspicuous as one could get if someone was aware of the situation. If someone was going to head out to the old base ruins, this would be the place they'd start.

Klied sat back in his chair outside the bar, feet on the table and his cycler rifle propped up against the wall behind him. In his hand was a small datapad with a vague collection of descriptions trying to illuminate the identity of some "Bandit Jedi" that had been terrorizing the region for some time. The hunter put his tongue in his cheek as he thought about it. Bounty hunting wasn't exactly his forte, but he had to admit he was getting tired of everyone planning to take two steps outside of town trying to hire him as a bodyguard. He had a wealth of knowledge about the wilds after all, and was pretty damn good with a slugthrower. Those kinds of talents brought with them a lot of attention in times like these, and that was something he wanted nothing of. He had begun to think about just jumping planet, and to hell with iriaz season. But a part of him wanted to lend a helping hand, he liked the folks on this world after all. He hated to see them hurting.

Glancing up he noticed an unfamiliar face in town. A young man, a mercenary by the looks of him, maybe a bounty hunter? He was geared up and had a determined expression on his face. The guy was looking for trouble. Klied considered it a bit more before standing up. Why not? The sooner this bandit problem was dealt with the sooner everyone would go back to leaving him in peace. Picking up his rifle and slinging it over his shoulder he casually approached the merc, hands in his pockets.

"Hey," He called. "You here about that rogue Jedi problem? I can tell you right now you're not gonna find him without a tracker." He smirked. "I work cheap. And I've got kark all to do right about now. I'm in the mood for some frontier justice..." He didn't imagine he looked very professional what with being dressed like a cave man essentially. But he carried himself with the confidence of a man who knew what he was talking about.

A man approached the undercover Ranger with a noticeable confidence about him. This person was the visual antithesis of Corran in every way. His attire looked like it was made out of furs and tanned leather; not the mass-produced garments made in factories around the galaxy. Even more noticeable, the approaching stranger had a Cycler rifle slung over his shoulder. Corran mentally began reciting all the laws and codes that using such a weapon violated. To find someone wielding it even out on the Rim was a bit surprising.

But, he looked like someone who could help get this investigation done.

Whoever this man was, he was right about one thing: Corran needed a tracker. It was the Ranger’s first time on Dantooine and he didn’t know a single thing about finding someone without the aid of technology or a solid witness pointing it out.

“You’ve got good intuition,” Corran called back, “I could use a guide. I’m looking to have a visit with this ‘bandit jedi.’ What’s your name?” The Coreward accent was a dead giveaway that Corran wasn’t from around the Outer Rim, much less Dantooine. His attire was too rigid as well. Too clean. Nothing like the other frontier roughnecks that were commonly seen throughout these parts.

Thrumming along across the peaceful plains of Dantooine, a bronzium-plated swoop bike seemed to be doing its best to look completely and utterly out of place, bronzium sheen clashing with the plain, pale browns of soil and stone. With a flashy flourish it dropped down and drifted to a stop, engine purring for a few moments before it was deactivated. A suited up man hopped off, looking distinctly not local, small twin plumes of minty vapor jetting out from the sides of the mask. On each thigh was strapped a DE-10 pistol in a magnetic clip holster. He also had his lightsaber with him, of course, though it was concealed inside a bottom latched pouch at the small of his back. His various pouches contained a variety of goods, notably four reloads for the DE-10. A well-used combat fusioncutter
was attached to a magnetic plate on the right side of his belt, within easy reach should he need it.

All in all, he was attempting to make it look like he was definitely a professional Bounty Hunter or something instead of a Jedi of some kind. Less for the suspicions of the locals and more for this supposed 'Rogue Jedi' that was causing a problem in the area, a troublesome thing he'd picked up through the grapevine of sorts. Whether it was legit or not, he doubted rumor of an actual Jedi Knight showing up would encourage them to leave their hiding place. He looked around, mirrored eye lenses reflecting bits of the surroundings, stopping on the pair of armed men in the little outpost. They looked local-ish, right?

So he wandered right on over, giving a smooth little wave and peaking up.
"Have either of you heard anything about a Rogue Jedi?" came the synthetic voice of the mask, actually the translator inside doing it's best to handle the very tonal Epicant language. The Basic intonation was fine, but the voice itself was a little lacking in emotional inflection and was rather droid-like. Of course, that was sort of the point. Between the voice scrambler, the translator, and the concealing helmet, Hannibal wasn't easy to recognize.

He gave the two another look. The one with the Cycler was definitely either a local or a filthy space hobo of some kind. The other one, upon closer inspection, maybe wasn't from around here. His posture was different, his hair was just a tad too fashionable, and he was generally far too clean to be living in a dusty outpost on a farming planet. A bit lightly armed and armored to be a proper bounty hunter, unless he was new or something. Ranger maybe? He mentally shrugged it off, sure he'd figure out after a few minutes of conversation. People liked to talk, especially in an unfamiliar environment.

As Corran was looking over Klied the hunter was doing the same to him. Getting a closer look he took notice of the younger man's very proper and unusually clean appearance. He noticed the man eyeing his less-than-legal armament with a dissatisfied look as well. The hunter's grin grew a little. Law enforcement then, and foreign law enforcement judging by the accent. A Sector Ranger.

"Klied." He replied simply to the Ranger's question. He was about to ask for the Ranger's name as well when a new addition to the conversation showed their face. Klied briefly looked this one over from where he stood as well, but he was harder to read what with his getup. He couldn't even read the intonations of his voice with the modulator. He looked like an off-world bounty hunter or mercenary, but there was something about him that seemed off. But Klied couldn't really figure out what it was.

"As a matter of fact we have." He replied, his skepticism seeping into his tone. He looked back at Corran. "The lawman and I were about to go hunting." His smirk returned as he confidently assumed the stranger's status. "If we have an agreement that is." He assumed this bounty hunter would want a cut as well. He wouldn't mind having a spare blaster if they were going up against an alleged Jedi, but he would need to remind himself to keep an eye on the masked man.

Before Corran could properly introduce himself to Klied, a revving speeder bike of reflective bronzium pulled into the station. Its rider looked more droid than man, but the movements were too fluid. The helmeted figure strode up and inquired on seeking out the Rogue Jedi with a modulated voice. With the advanced suit, noticeable armaments, and sophisticated mask, Corran assumed he was one of the well-to-do bounty hunters from the Core. The masked man would have fit in better on worlds like Coruscant or Eriadu, more than the plains of Dantooine. Something about that didn’t fit right with the Ranger, but he filed that away for later.

Klied got the first word out. Not only the first word, but a few words too many. The fur-wearing man called Corran ‘the lawman’ with a sly smirk. The Coreworlder didn’t externally react, preferring to not directly acknowledge it. He made another mental note to improve his ‘undercover’ work. Either Klied was above average in his senses or Corran was not as clever as he hoped.
“Klied has it right,” The lawman began, “We are looking into the matter. Local reports suggest that a small group works in conjunction with this ‘Bandit Jedi’. If you’re interested, we could use another hand.”

Corran wasn’t sure if both these men expected high rewards for their work. Whatever was held in that hideout would have to make it worth their while. The Rangers didn’t necessarily work for payouts, generally, but some perks sometimes came along. In this case, if he took nothing home but the detainee; that would be a fair arrangement.

“While we are on introductions,” the Coreworlder continued with a nod to Klied, “My name’s Corran.” He would extend a hand to Klied and the armored newcomer respectively. It was also implied to be the beginning of a temporary partnership.

Satisfied that he'd made the impression he'd been going for, or at least discouraged excessive curiosity for the moment, Hannibal nodded sharply in response to Corran's inquest as to his interest in joining them on their hunt. "I would join you. My client is private; I will not need payment from you." Other than the part about joining them, this was entirely false. No one had hired him to be here, he was just here to help in whatever way he could. He didn't need to be here as a Jedi for that, he just needed to get to work. Sometimes, he felt, that was probably best.

"I am called Laohu." he offered his alias, briefly but firmly shaking the Ranger's offered hand, briefly sweeping his unseen eyes over him once again. Lawman, huh? So he was a Ranger, most likely. That probably works out then after all. The other guy, all furs and leathers and smirking, was giving Hannibal the distinct impression he was suspicious of him. Ah well, can't get them all. He doubted he had any solid thoughts on the matter, so he'd move right along.

"What have you found?" he asked through the translator, looking once at each of them. He hoped at least they had a little something, like a location or description, or hard evidence, scenes of attack, whatever. Hannibal's ability to track or read impressions through the Force was much more reliable when he knew what he was looking for.

Klied returned Corran's handshake, his face turning a bit more serious as they engaged in their temporary alliance. If nothing else the young Ranger seemed like a goodhearted sort. Hearing "Laohu" introduce himself drew the hunter's attention again, and drew even more suspicions as he explained his situation. A private client? Klied doubted any of the local settlers could afford such a clearly high-end bounty hunter. That meant this client must have been an off-worlder as well. What interest would they have in some random bandit on a backwater world like Dantooine? He wondered if it was specifically because of the Jedi rumors, it had to be. The hunter would continue to eye Hannibal suspiciously as he shook his hand.

"I don't know what Corran's got on him," He replied, glancing briefly to the Ranger. "But I've heard of several places where attacks have been reported. If we head there I should be able to find some trace of where they came from." He stood back after making his offer, waiting for the Ranger's reply. This was his operation after all. If the younger man already had a strategy formed he didn't want to step on any toes.

“Laohu,” Corran repeated as he shook the faceless bounty hunter’s hand, committing the name to memory. The private financier was a curious twist in this already mysterious man. Corran’s professionally-ingrained desire to ask questions reared its ugly head but he repressed it. Best not to look a gift Orbak in the mouth. Besides, weren’t Rangers privately financed until Coruscant took of their cause?

Klied’s clever smirk turned into a stoic grimace when the two shook hands. The Sector Ranger couldn’t quite get a good read on the guy, but he did seem peculiar. Of course, Corran didn’t know very much about any of these men. Part of that made him uneasy but sometimes you just had to rely on the kindness of strangers.

Right to business, Laohu requested information on their target. Klied seemed to be suspicious of the other man. There was some sense in it; the man's face was completely covered and voice completely hidden. On the other hand, Mandalorians sometime did the same thing. Was Laohu a Mandalorian? Corran had only ever met one before. The rustic Klied still took the opportunity to share what he knew, despite what seemed like misgivings. The lawman listened intently and nodded as his counterpart spoke.

“I’ve got some additional reports I’ve gleaned from the records locally,” Corran said as he pulled a datapad from one of the side pockets of his backpack. A few taps brought up a screen of time-stamped events and testimonies.

“The facts are hard to parse from the myths,” Corran said as he scrolled through the log on his datapad, “Most of the reports come from eye witness accounts, which can be unreliable. Some accounts claim no more than 3 criminals, including the Bandit Jedi, or up to 50.”

The lawman finally stopped on a larger text file and selected it with a precise brush of his finger.

“The Rogue Jedi himself is a bit more certain. A Weequay from off world. One account of a couple citizens going to pay him tribute to cease threatening their homestead claims he was able to pull all metal objects off their persons using some unseen power. Uses a red bladed weapon and a green bladed weapon, though no records of them being used on anyone...”

Corran's voice trailed off in thought, the gears in his head already thinking through several questions and conjuring possible answers. After a few moments, he shook his head back to the present.

“Last known whereabouts are some abandoned military base. Over 100 years old. Built into the ground with some exposed topside buildings and a hangar. Likely a Rebel Alliance base from the war, but hard to say.” The rust-blond man then tucked away the datapad and nodded at Klied, “But that could be old information. If you know of more recent attacks, that is a better place to start.”

'Laohu' listened to the information to presented by Corran, a hidden brow beneath the helmet raising up at the mention of pulling metal objects. Specifically metal, was it? Perhaps just poor reporting. Witnesses were not the most reliable source of information, especially considering the vast difference between 3 and 50 bandits.

He briefly shook his head when the Ranger wondered aloud if Hannibal had any information about more recent attacks
."Nothing more recent than that." he replied simply, pausing for a moment. "The intention was to search on arrival. An old base is good to start." He kept his other thoughts to himself, namely that the concept of a Jedi, or Dark Jedi even, deciding on the life of a farm-raiding bandit seemed rather odd. Perhaps this Weequay was just kind of bad at the Force, or something? He suspected it would be figured out at some point down the line, one way or another.

Whether it was an actual rogue force user or some idiot pretending to be one, Hannibal was determined to put a stop to it. The Order had enough mixed press in the media without another fool pretending to be a member.

While listening to Corran's more detailed description Klied began to scowl, a hand raising to his chin as he fell into deep thought on what he was hearing. Moving specifically metal objects and pointedly not using the supposedly most useful weapons he possessed? Not to mention the unusualness of possessing both a red and green lightsaber. Klied wasn't particularly knowledgeable when it came to the traditions of Force users but he knew that the Jedi and Sith were two separate factions, and a member of either wouldn't typically be seen using the weapon of another. This bandit was beginning to sound to him more and more like just that, a bandit. A mere man trying to pull the wool over the eyes of people who wouldn't know any better using cheap parlor tricks. Not to mention Weequay commonly found themselves in the employ of the Hutts and other criminal organizations. This all sounded like a scam.

Still, he decided to keep these thoughts to himself until they had more information to go off of, no use in speaking his theory right now and potentially getting the others to lower their guard for what could still turn out to be a real Force user. "Sounds like we have our first destination then." He finally spoke up, nodding in agreement with Laohu. "Let's not waste any time." He continued as he turned back to Corran. They'd want to move fast. From the sound of things this group was likely nomadic in nature or occupying several bases if they were so large. It would be best to start picking them off sooner rather than later.

"It's agreed then. Old base it is." Corran confirmed, repeating the decision of the other two men. "It's a few klicks northeast from here. Fastest way is by speeder bike." The lawman pointed a thumb over his shoulder towards the self-service rental station for some well-worn bikes, "Though I suspect the citizen with the bronzium beauty won't taking those." He smirked to the masked Laohu, not really expecting any type of reaction.

Corran turned around and began walking to the self-service station, talking over his shoulder to his temporary allies, "I think we should stop just shy of the base perimeter. Scope it out from a grassy knoll. Who knows what condition the base is in and I think I'll need my bearings." The speeder bikes were of assorted variety. Some looked only a few years old, others a few decades. All had worn seats and rust. Corran leaned over one and shook his head. Wouldn't do. He picked that looked like it had been in the rain too long, but otherwise all factory parts. Straddling the vehicle, he paid the necessary credits in the nearby self-service console that the bike was locked to. The clap let go. The young man reached for the bike's console below the handle bars, hesitated briefly, then pressed a button. The machine shuttered to life and began to hover.

"First time for everything..." Corran mumbled to himself. Carefully gripping the bars, the lawman hit the kickstand that kept the bike anchored to the ground and immediately clenched his knees to the side of the speeder bike. It still floated and didn't immediately roll over or something. Relieved, he gave it a bit of juice from the pedals and pulled out of the station carefully. When all had mounted up, he would take off towards the base.

Hannibal nodded wordlessly and turned around, hopping back on his swoop bike. When Corran launched off he followed on Roxanne, making sure to go at speeder bike speeds instead of the much more ludicrous speed a swoop was capable of. He kept close to the others and as low to the ground as reasonably possible, simply going along with the plan. There wasn't a whole lot of information about this allegedly rogue Jedi, after all.

A few kliks wouldn't take too long at their speed. Hannibal kept his senses sharp, alert for any trouble on the way. He suspected he might have to be extra dodgy today, since he didn't want to start pulling lightsabers out in his bounty hunting suit. With any luck they could get to the bottom of this mess and put a stop to it without an excess of murder.

Klied winced a bit at the prospect of riding a speeder bike. Vehicles weren't exactly his area of expertise. Still, he went to the self-service console without protest, picking a bike that looked in the least poor condition and mounting up. He fired off alongside his two allies, a little shaky at first but quickly gaining a handle on the machine. Although it shuddered and buzzed concerningly, Klied trusted the vehicle was in good enough condition not to fall apart on him.

He kept pace with the others, keeping an eye out for any sign of their quarry. He didn't like the idea of killing fellow sentients, but he justified it to himself that these were criminals, men and women who were terrorizing folks who were just trying to get by. He thought back to the Sandpeople he had once fought and killed on Tatooine. Associating these bandits with those monstrous creatures wasn't exactly a fair comparison, but it would do to help him cope with killing his fellow man. With a deep breath to focus himself he fell in behind Corran, following the Sector Ranger's lead.

The plains of wild grass and dark wall-clouds swept by in blurs of grey and brown. Corran wondered if Dantooine always looked like this or if he had missed some hey-day the world enjoyed long ago. It all seemed so morose. Like the entire planet was depressed. The datapad vibrating in his coat pocket signaled that the trio were nearing their destination. Raising an arm in the air, the lawman gestured for the other two to pull over behind a grassy knoll that would hide their approach to the abandoned base.

Corran slowed the speeder down to a complete stop almost too cautiously. When the bike ran out of lift, its nose dropped to the soil. Dismounting the vehicle, the young man heaved up on its kick-stands. His opinion on the utility of speeder-bikes was certainly not improving. When the other two men arrived, they would find Corran kneeling down near his ride and ready to discuss his proposed plan.

“Just over this hill is the base. We should proceed on foot so we don’t ride into some sort of shootout. I don’t know the layout of the facility, so we’ll just have to find our way through,” the law enforcer gestured to the rising hill behind him. It was clear he preferred getting some good eyes on the base and operating on a surprise rather than going in blasters blazing. “I don’t want to kill anybody if we don’t have to. Set your weapons for stun, if you’ve got them.“

He let those comments float in the air briefly before asking for input, “If that isn’t to your taste, I’m all ears.”

Laohu followed in behind Corran, slowing to a stop a few meters away from his own borrowed speeder and dismounting it. He let it sink into the grass in full shutdown, then moved quietly over and kneeled down to join him. He listened to the plan silently, double-checking that his blasters were set to stun when it was brought up. Yup, still set to stun, as usual.

"Understood. Makes sense to me." There wasn't much else they could do in this situation, anyway. The place wasn't mapped, they didn't have scouts to figure out the number of bandits or defensive emplacements, and they certainly didn't have the numbers or gear to just storm the place. Slow and steady would win out over haste in this case, Hannibal suspected. Besides, this wasn't really his party. His only real goal was to make sure a some Force user wasn't playing bandit out in the middle of nowhere.

"No complaints. I will have your back."

Klied followed suit behind his allies, stopping his speeder alongside theirs and powering it down, although the old piece of junk did make a little more of a racket than he would have liked, he doubted any of the bandits would be able to hear it at this distance. The hunter knelt down besides Corran and Laohu, listening closely to the Sector Ranger's plan.

"One of us should trail behind to offer support if the others are spotted on the approach," Klied offered. "I can set up overwatch on the hill there, my rifle's got good range. If you give me a commlink I can keep track of the movements of any sentries and warn you if one is getting too close. Once you're both inside I can catch up."

When Corran mentioned setting their weapons to stun he glanced a bit awkwardly at the slugthrower slung to his back. "Uh... Guess I'm aiming for the knees then..." He said with an uncertain shrug.

The lawman nodded at Klied’s first suggestion of having one of the trio on overwatch and then visibly grimaced at the thought of shooting a living being in the kneecaps with a ballistics round. Totally barbaric. “Just try not to maim someone for life out there, if it can be helped,” Corran pleaded.

With that settled, the approach to the formerly abandoned base was down to himself and Laohu. “Stay low and alert me if necessary,” the Ranger said. He knelt down and began crouch-walking through the tall grasses towards the top of the ridge. Peeping over the crest, the military ruins revealed themselves in full detail.

There were some scattered and eroded defensive works that had once acted as barriers to ground attack. They were rusted barricades or caved-in trenches now. Beyond them were a few surface-level buildings. A collapsed command center complete with a fallen over communications array. A barracks with the doors lost to history. The most interesting part of the base was what looked like a semi-subterranean hangar. The whole edifice was at a slight incline, giving into the soil below, and the hangar bay opening up to the sky. It had some new additions, however. What would have been hangar doors had been replaced with welded on durasteel plates, all crudely stacked against each other to form a wall. At the base lay a rusted gate.

“If anyone is here, I’d bet they are in there,” Corran spoke in a low voice, nodding to the hangar in the distance. Just then, two humanoids came out from behind the collapsed command center in the distance. They were not alert but armed. It seemed that the reports of a gang were accurate, though their numbers remained in question.

"I think we should get closer. If we need to take 'em out, we can." The lawman laid low and began crawling through the tall grass, periodically stopping to avoid giving away his position, and continuing on towards the hangar.

Behind his helmet, Hannibal gave the rugged Klied a look of disapproval regarding his cycler rifle. He hadn't really expected him to use anything else, considering that's about all he was carrying, but still. They were really only good at causing painful wounds compared to blasters. Ah well, not much one can really do about it.

Hannibal sank low and followed behind and to the left of Corran, a blaster pistol slipped out of the holster and into his left hand. His eyes swept over the ramshackle 'base', noting especially the very dieselpunk front gate. All salvaged from the look of it. He turned to look to the ruins of the command center as two men appeared from around the corner, sinking lower into the grass. He didn't want to risk using the Force to make them leave as a rogue sensitive may notice it, so he instead joined Corran in crawling through the grass.

He had a bad feeling about this, somehow.

"Right..." Klied replied to Corran's plea apologetically, feeling the disapproval from both of his allies. He'd always preferred using slugthrowers specifically because of their reliability. He had found a cycler rifle was much easier to maintain while on week or month long stints in harsh environments. Practicality was all the consideration he had ever really given it. Now with the prospect of killing sentients he began to understand the stigma.

He shook these thoughts from his mind as he crawled up the hill to get into position. It wouldn't do to be feeling sorry for himself while the others were in danger. Once he had reached a good sniping spot he settled in and looked down the scope of his rifle, scanning the base before him. He had to keep on high alert, as there were a lot of spots with all these buildings where an enemy could suddenly appear from.

He followed Corran and Hannibal's path, spotting the two guards as they emerged from the command center. After another quick sweep around the area to make sure the coast was clear he held the commlink up to his mouth and spoke into it. "No one else in sight for now, you're clear to engage them." He said, and then focused his sights on one of the men, prepared to open fire if his allies' attack failed to take them both down.
