Zan coughed violently as he climbed out from under the massive engine of the beached starship. It was a WTK-85A light freighter, normally a very reliable ship now spewing a steady stream of putrid black smoke into the clear blue sky.

"Well, we're karked." He quite bluntly informed his crewmate Edie as he wiped the sweat from his brow. He looked out over the bleak landscape of the Jundland Wastes as he continued speaking. "Stabilizer's fried. I try and fire her up as is and the port engine will take off without us." He looked back at her, biting his lip. "We're stuck here until it's replaced, and they're not exactly cheap." Had they managed to drop off their current cargo they would have had enough credits and then some to buy a replacement legitimately. But a run in with some Hutt Cartel gangsters had forced them to change course. Zan knew they were short on time too. The Hutts owned Tatooine, and wouldn't appreciate smugglers trying to do business in their territory without giving them their cut. They had to resolve this problem in a timely matter, or their new business venture would be ending very prematurely.

"Mos Eisley isn't far. We could head in and see if we could scrape together the parts we need while Zap watches the ship." He shrugged his shoulders. "Either that or try to flag down some Jawas. What do you think?" It was an odd question to ask considering they really didn't have a choice in the matter. Still Edie had proven to be a resourceful woman in the short time Zan had been working with her, and well traveled. Perhaps she had some insight about the planet he lacked.

Edie stood next to the engine, checking her nails for any dirt. Trust those engines to break now. Right when they were flying close to Tatooine. Right when they were stuck in the middle of Hutt Space with barely enough credits to get some food for the next few days. Not the best position for a couple of freelance smugglers looking to sneak some stuff under the nose of the Hutts. And Edie was damn sure she wasn't gonna give those slimy, fat things the tiniest hint of her payday.

She pulled her face the moment he mentioned Jawas. "Jawas? That landing must'a hit you harder than I thought. I'd rather shoot myself than deal with a bunch of thieving little grubs like them." The thought of it made a cold sweat run under her poncho. "I haven't been on Tattooine since... wow, musta been over six years back and I'm not happy to be repeating the experience."

She stepped forwards, kicking a little of the sand and dust. Thinking. C'mon Edie, you think quick. This is your jam. Hard situations, quick solutions.

"I think we better head to town. Not least because I need a drink after that," she told Zan, shrugging. "Then we can find a dealer with a stabilizer. Shouldn't be too hard, right?" She flashed an easy-going smile at Zan as she mentioned it. "We could run the Free Worlds dignitary scam... no wait, they aren't gonna fall for that in Hutt Space... hmm."

Her boots trod a pattern in the dirt as she kept moving, thinking.

"Suppose if it comes down to it, I can always sweet-talk 'em while you sneak through and grab what you can. If you can."

"We're thieving little grubs Edie." Zan reminded his partner with a smirk. But she was right. Jawas weren't the most reliable trade partners. They were just as likely to sell them faulty parts and still try to push the price too high doing it. Better to steal from someone more reputable in town. While Edie set off in the direction of the spaceport Zan ran up to the loading ramp, cupping his hands to his mouth and shouting inside the ship.

"Hey Zap!" He called to his first mate. "We're heading into town for resupply. You're on guard duty. Any solicitors come knocking you shoot them yeah?"

"With the big guns?" A small voice called back hopefully.

"Not the big guns!" Zan snapped back. "Don't you take a step in my cockpit while I'm gone you hear me? I'll know."

"Alright..." A disappointed voice answered. With a smile Zan turned and jogged to catch up with Edie. They were only about an hour outside the spaceport. The terrain would be an inconvenience traversing but Zan didn't want to risk the Hassler being ID'd or nosy locals asking about their cargo. Better to leave the ship hidden in the wastes, even with the threat of Sandpeople. As Edie mulled over different scams they could try Zan pulled out his sabacc deck and began shuffling it.

"Why complicate things?" He asked with a sly grin. "An honest hussle seems good to me. Lure me some suckers and I'll gladly unburden them." It was a strategy that had worked for Zan many times in the past, so long as he kept his marks confined to targets that wouldn't get angry and put up a fight. Even if they did, he had backup, and the law was lax around here. No one would look twice at a barfight in a place like Mos Eisley.

TATOOINE, A MELTING POT OF GALACTIC SLUDGE, and the ideal location for a man of Drannix’ skills to hang around. He had been here for the past few days at least, fresh off the tail of a recent job looking to dump the score on a fence in these parts, and as of yesterday, he was out of work, mooching off the take of the previous heist. A tidy sum it had been as well, and as he leant on the wall of the nearby Cantina, a death stick hanging lazily out of his mouth, he looked up at the sky and let out a deep breath.

Sometimes it was good to kick back and relax.

He was dressed reasonably smartly, a loose fitting shirt dyed a yellowish colour thanks to the heat of the sun that relentlessly hammered down, a pair of khaki pants and a set of shades. At his hip rested a pistol and a vibroblade, and nearby sat his speeder-car, but - for once - he wasn’t expecting much in the way of trouble.

Clocking two newcomers, he looked up from under his shades but kept his silence. Two off-worlders by the looks of them, spacers at the least. Two humans, deep in conversation, clearly at home and at ease in a setting such as this. He said nothing and walked into the Cantina just before they arrived, removing his shades as he did so.

He needed a drink.

Edie eyed the sabacc deck as Zan pulled it out. "Very brave of you to get that deck out, after all the trouble it caused back on Savareen," she said, shaking her head as she started walking off towards Mos Eisley. It'd take a while, but it was the safest way. They'd be lucky to get that ship anywhere else without the engine blasting into bits. Besides, the less attention, the better. She sipped on her canteen as they kept walking.

I need a serious drink.

It wouldn't take long before they were into the town itself. Quiet, unnerving sandy dunes closed into busy streets, with countless species milling around, trading, working and dealing. Edie slowed as she made her way through the crowd, slipping into that old half-trance, seeing what marks she could make in the crowd. Bit worthless though, they were on Tattooine, they weren't gonna be hoarding anything of value in their bags.

The cantina loomed in front of them. Edie licked her lips, already savouring the taste of something cool, sweet and near-lethal to human physiology... but there were more important things to do. Grunting, she turned away and scanned around.

"Couple'a junk dealers off there, they might have a cheap used one we can screw them out of..." she began quietly, but the hesitation was clear in her words. These kinds of vultures are too cheap and nasty to be good marks. They're probably better at scamming than we are.

"Could try the engine yards. Might have something with one of the licensed starship dealers. Maybe some Subpro spare parts?"
Truth was, Tatooine wasn't the best world for easy marks. Hard people and criminals were never the easiest. The most satisfying, sure. But never the easiest.

"Or we could just get smashed on cheap hooch?"

"That was not my fault." Zan immediately replied defensively to Edie's remark. "I told you I don't play Corellian Spike of course I was gonna get caught. Now if we can find some civilized folks know how to play Centran we're all set." Nevertheless he put the deck away and shoved his hands in his pockets in a disgruntled fashion. His eyes followed Edie's, looking out across their menu of potential targets. The junk dealers on the streets didn't look particularly reputable. He didn't trust anything they were selling to hold through the atmosphere let alone hyperspace. They would need to scope out a shop.

"We're in no rush, or at least we don't want to look like we are." He answered her question, looking back to her with a smile. "Let's grab a drink, talk shop with the locals. Maybe they'll give us some insight on a good mark." He started walking towards the cantina. Getting an idea he snapped his fingers and turned back to her with an excited expression. "Oh! Better yet we could pull the Wannabe Spacers. Find a captain with the right ship to charter, while you talk price I could sneak in and lift the stabilizer." A particularly nasty plan if their hypothetical sucker tried to take off before finding out about his missing parts, but it would be easier than breaking into a starship dealer that was probably under the protection of the Hutts or another local gang. While leaving Edie to consider his suggestion Zan would go to the bar to order a drink.

Near the furthest edge of the bar sat Jax in his worn old blue leather duster. A tall man, he seemed rigid from afar sitting as straight as possible, left hand on his glass and a right hand rested on his thigh, within reach of his blaster, the Jacket was tight across his shoulders but his face and neck were thin. Tatooine was a place where being able to reach one's blaster was as much a necessity as readily available water.

He was conversing with the bartender, he spoke neither loudly nor quietly, keeping a level tone if not a little dispassionate "No I can't, not since the whole business in Mos Espa" He said turning his head to look at the new arrivals. A single human removing sunglasses and seemed to be chewing something. It took him a moment to realize it was a deathstick. He was going to turn his attention back to his conversation when two more Humans entered the Cantina. Possibly spacers.

He turned back to the bartender and nodded to the new arrival "I'll have another before you go back to work" He then finished his drink and placed the opaque glass back on the bar. It was obvious when coming closer to him that Jax was wearing armour under his clothes, Mandalorian armour but his accent was Correllian and he had no helmet on his head.

”Corellian Ale,” Drannix flagged down the barkeep and spent his credits fast. What he got, he was not quite sure actually was Corellian Ale, but it was better than nothing - and he had certainly got what he paid for, on account it hadn't been his money he had paud with anyway. Leaning against the bar, he lit a stim in flagrant disregard for the no-smoking sign, much like the great many other patrons who had done likewise judging by the pall of smoke in the room.

He couldn’t help but overhear the two newcomers chatting about securing a ride off planet. Well, he had a ship, and it had space - plus, a little profit would never go amiss. ”You don’t wanna trust ‘alf these crooks. Most of their ships are creamed anyway.” he turned to face them and set down his pint ”Mak Tumal,” extending his free hand he grinned ”Intergalactic Shipping Union,” he lied ”I’ve got a ride, most beautiful ship in the sector, make no mistake.”

Looking the two of them up and down and trying to figure out their connection to each other, he leaned in ”All straight up though yeah? I’ll have you up and offworld in no time, where to?”

"The Wannabe Spacers?" she asked carefully, quietly. Not a bad trick, depending on what you wanted to go for, but hot damn. "Don't you think it might be just a little bit difficult to get a stabilizer outta the engine while one of us is quick talking? I mean, no offence to your engine skills but I've seen what ship you drive." She approached the bar, shaking her head as she leaned against it.

"Whiskey. Hardest you've got."

Nursing her rough drink, Edie took a look around. Kinda strange to hear a Corellian accent on Tatooine, right? Least of all from a man in what looked to be wearing Mandolorian armor. That was the sign of a serious fighter... or someone who'd taken it off a serious fighter. That spelt trouble... and not the fun kind where you get paid. Luckily for her, it seemed like the mark had made their move for them.

She looked down at the hand and shrugged, reaching for it. Squeezing it softly. "Nice to meet you. Eris Styler," she began, putting on the flashy smile she reserved for the best targets. "I'm afraid I'm not all that familiar with the details of the business," she said, giving a slightly nervous chuckle. "My partner here handles the particulars." She waved towards Zan, hoping he'd get the hint. He was usually pretty quick on the uptake.

"I sure hope it's a nice ship, I wouldn't want to be heading back to the Core in something drab. Might not believe it but they're awfully competitive on Chandrila, and I don't intend to let a little accident with our craft cramp my style." It came thick and fast. Wheedling and lying with all the ease of breathing. Even her accent was touched up, more distinctly Corellian now with a hint of class around it. Perfect for the 'rich girl slumming' vibe.

"Oh ye of little faith..." Zan replied to Edie's doubts with a smirk. "Spotchka." He ordered from the bartender, and gave his partner a sidelong glance as she grabbed her whiskey. "Easy now, don't go at it too hard I need you thinking straight." He whispered warningly. It wouldn't do to have his backup getting drunk before they even started the scam.

She was in good form though. Zan watched with a small grin as she slipped right into character when a mark came asking about transport. When she cued him in the scoundrel introduced himself smoothly. He might not have been from the richer parts of the core, but he'd heard the accent enough to put on a near perfect show. He doubted anyone from the rim would be able to pick up the very slight imperfections in his pronunciation.

"Seger Dyse." He introduced himself with a dopey smile and a glitter in his eye that made him look like a naïve fool. He grabbed Drannix's hand and shook it heartily. "Like my friend said I'm the pilot. Best in the Core." His smile broke and he averted his eyes, rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, working on it I mean..." He feigned embarrassment as he looked back at the spacer. "We hit a bit of a rough patch on our way through. Astrogation charts must be off cause we dropped out of hyperspace right into an asteroid field." He smirked. "I managed to save our skins. Ship's a wreck though." He perked up with a childlike curiosity. "So what kind of ship you got?"

He figured he could temporarily rig just about any stabilizer so long as it was the right size. First he'd have to coax some info out of their new friend. In the meantime his eyes drifted slightly in the direction of the man sitting in the corner. Was that a Mandalorian? Now that was something Zan really hadn't seen before. What would a Mandalorian be doing here? Shaking his head he turned his attention back to Drannix. He thought he and Edie had done a pretty good job painting the picture. Two foolhardy Core brats way out of their depth, vulnerable. Now they just needed to see if the man would take the bait.

Kryte slowly walked into the cantina, examining the crowd. He noticed several peculiar characters, quite normal for a place such as this, however. He walked up to the barkeep. "One Sarlacc Kicker," he ordered, handing over a couple of credits. He looked around and noticed a man wearing Mandalorian armor, he found this intriguing, as he didn't think any Mandalorians were still alive. The barkeep handed him his drank, and Kryte drank it slowly, as he continued to examine the scene.

Across the counter he noticed a trio of possible smugglers, thinking of them only as possible patronage. There were a couple of other low-lives wandering around, most likely drunk. He ventured over to the Mandalorian while trying to look as nonthreatening as possible, although he was sure this man wasn't afraid of anything. If he was wearing the armor of a Mandalorian, he either beat one in a fight or was one, both equally proving he was a warrior. He was wearing pieces of stormtrooper armor, which offended and scared some people — and it didn't help that he had two blasters visible on his sides. He sat down next to this outstanding man. "What's a Mandalorian doing on Tatooine?" Personally, Kryte had never even seen a Mandalorian in real life, only pictures.

Jax was used to awkward or curious glances when he wore his armour. He helped him to measure each person, their experience and personality by how they reacted to him. The new pair of arrivals both gave him similar glances, they recognized his armour for what it was and what it signified. Usually, it was enough to give him his much wanted privacy in a place like this. That wasn't the case with the latest arrival. A Trandoshan, small for his kind but still taller than Jax, and young-looking, although no expert on their physiology he could discern that he was not. The Mandalorian turned slowly to face the green-skinned alien, slowly turning his body. "Work" he said simply before allowing himself another sip of his dark beverage, his voice calm and his expression relaxed.

"Most people of this world keep to themselves" His accent was more clearly that of an Educated Correllian, not a common sight in these parts "But I suppose you are not most People" He pointed with his drinking hand at the damaged stormtrooper armour, careful to keep his right hand still rested on his thigh "Jax Shad" He introduced himself. Generally, he liked to keep to himself but a Trandoshian in trooper armour trying not to be intimidating was far too interesting to not talk to. "Yourself?" He asked

"Kryte's the name. I run a parts shop just a quick walk from here. I can repair just about anything you give me." He was glad to see that this Mandalorian wasn't one with a temper, as he knew he wouldn't be victorious in a fight. "As for the armor, it's just something I purchased from a bounty hunter that was passing through. I figured around these parts it can't hurt to have extra protection. If you need anything at all just stop by. It's not hard to find. If I'm not there, you can find F-3PO watching over it." He got up and walked back to the counter, trying not to be too intrusive. He ordered a Tatooni Junko this time. After taking his drink and giving the bartender a generous tip, he sat down at a table and began to read a book on repairing U-wings. While he was a skilled mechanic and electrician, he didn't know everything and enjoyed learning from old books such as this one.
