Denon, Dusk, Before Rain

There was a bitterness to the air, an icy breeze that nipped at her all too pale cheeks. It caught in her cloaks dark hood, slipped along her skin and took pleasure in her pain. The air and clouds were too thick not to rain soon. Night was all but fallen at this point, and while what she was about to do was against the agreement with her new 'partner', something was drawing her down this path.

She could not ignore the call of the Force.

This was not suppose to be about Trys. It was suppose to be about that Jedi Master, and his never ending pull that tortured her. But gripped in her left hand, the black-hilted lightsaber she'd earned on the old home world while Talak was training her. The man who had dragged her into the darkness, even after she had told him she was afraid. Had she known the path held so much pain, would she have chosen it? That thought fed the darkness in her too.

Lilith leapt off the deck, down into the middle of the road where she knew Trys was walking. It had been so long since Trys had seen Lilith that she was almost certain she'd not recognize her. Lilith's face remained neutral as she spoke, "Trys."

Trys was venturing out into other planets for work, Coruscant having gotten a bit slow for her tastes. Cases of the zombie outbreak or serial killers were back on her radar, and she was less concerned with the Sith problem. Jedi had done a great job of sniffing them out when possible and they worked in perfect partnership with the Rangers.

Even now she could smell the air and the rain that would soon come. Trys had her hands in her pocket, and she had a cigarra hanging from the corner of her lip. Despite multiple attempts to kick the habit, she finally gave up and simply lowered the amount she smoked. She wasn’t exactly on duty for now, and she would find reprieve from the rain in a nearby cantina.

Trys didn’t hear or notice anything strange until she heard her name. She paused as she walked, deciding whether to acknowledge it or not. Her face had been splashed across the galaxy, and she was highly wanted by Sith. She normally hid who she was, but this person clearly knew.

The Ranger slowly turned to look, gazing for a few seconds before she realized who it was, “Oh,” She said simply, taking another draw from her cigarra, “To what do I owe this pleasure?”

When Trys turned, Lilith stared at her. The woman looked almost the same as the first day they met, and memories of their meeting flooded Lilith's mind. As did memories of her former.... master. It only catered to the darkness that was eating away at her mind. It's whispers were nearly overwhelming, and they told her that there was only way to relieve the pain.

Lilith's neutral look soon turned into a frown as she heard the woman's following words. They frustrated her, and prompted her to answer between gritted teeth, "If you remember my face..." Lilith lifted her left hand up slightly, gripping her hilt until it hurt her. "then you know.... what I am."

The young darksider took steps towards Trys. "Run. Run or kill me now, because I..." Lilith breathed in, and her right hand shot to her forehead as she came to a sudden unexpected stop. Her fingers dug into her forehead as she fought against the desire to just end it all now. "because I don't know what I'm going to do."

Trys simply stared at the girl, the expression on her face difficult to read. She drew in from the cigarra again, smoke pluming out from her nostrils. Trys eyed her for a while, remembering the last time they had crossed one another. In fact, now that she saw her again a lot of details came flooding back to her. Was this the same person Oren described?

“I don’t feel like running,” Trys said blankly, walking closer to the girl that was obviously tweaking out, “You need help,” She said quietly as she took another drag from the cigarra. Normally Trys didn’t put up with unstable people, but this girl obviously had meant something to Talak.

“Why have you found me again? Are you in trouble?” She looked around the girl, trying to spot any other Sith. Trys knew there was a manhunt for her head ordered by the Eternal.

“Look, you don’t have to do this,” Trys said, holding her hands up to show she didn’t intend for a fight, “You can come back with me and we can safeguard you against whatever the Sith are making you do.”

Lilith didn't say anything when Trys nonchalantly said she wasn't running, instead she remained eerily quiet, despite the bubbling anger inside. The young darksider's slowly removed her hand from her face, looking up till her eyes met Try's face. The woman hadn't even taken out a weapon. What was wrong with her?

Did she go to the same stupid school as Oren?

Lilith ignited her lightsaber, bringing the humming, burning beam of crimson up, to show Trys exactly who she was walking towards. If the woman didn't draw her weapon and shoot right away, Lilith would continue... albeit, after a pause, "You do not understand..."

Her free hand crackled with lightning. All her anger, fear, confusion manifested into power. A bolt of it shot to the right side of Try's, hissing loudly as it made contact with the cold cement. It'd miss by a large enough margin, but lightning continued to gain mass in her hand, so much so that it began to slowly crawl up her arm.

Maybe her anger stemmed from the woman not giving her what she needed; that last push to send her off the edge she'd been so afraid of. That push that even Ender couldn't provide. "The Sith didn't send me here. Talak's betrayal left a veil of suspicion hanging over my head. I was his apprentice. I walked through the temple by his side, as he taught me how to utilize this power," she said bluntly, balling her free hand into a fist. "After he tortured me. And now, the person he holds the most dear is in front of me, and I could inflict the pain he inflicted on me."

Trys would have remained unfazed, but her thoughts drifted briefly to her son. She couldn’t afford to be reckless when her child depended on her. Beyond anyone in the galaxy, her son came to her mind before anything. Her jaw tightened, and her hand rested on her blaster. She was quick with the draw, but she still hesitated just for a moment.

There was no denying the pain that was in her voice. Talak had told Trys about what he had done and the guilt he had felt. Would revealing that help anything? The woman was obviously tortured from the past, and she wanted nothing more than to inflict the same kind of pain.

“And then what?” Trys asked, “You want him to suffer with you? You want him to return to what he was because you can’t get out of it?” She had to ask, the gun now in her hand, “I’m not going to let you kill me because I have people that depend on me. Take one more step and I’ll shoot you in your pretty face.”

“But before you do,”
Trys glared at her, “Think about what you gain from hurting me. It won’t make you feel any better. It’ll only remind you that you have no control over yourself.”

Lilith's eyes lowered from the unexpected questions, and her demeanor changed suddenly. A look of being a distance away in thought took over her countenance, but only for a few seconds. A few seconds. It was almost immediately taken over by a look of anger, and feelings that she could not handle filled her mind. She couldn't. She handle being torn anymore.

She couldn't. She couldn't. She couldn't. She couldn't do it anymore! "SHUT UP!" a scream rang from her. And she didn't stop there. "SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUUUTT UPPPPP!"

The young darksider breathed in deeply, bringing her chin up at the same time to stare the woman directly in her eyes. "Your death will bring me salvation. You will be my first innocent, and there will be no going back," she said in a stone cold voice, starkly to her outburst only seconds earlier.

"Break my chain." Lilith allowed the lightning from her hand already facing Trys to spill out. She had no delusions that it'd hit its mark, she only wanted to make the woman move. Though as the darkness continued to consume her mind she would throw herself at Trys with a reckless abandon unrealized even to herself. Lilith began to move though not directly towards Trys yet, more in an attempt to make herself a harder target to hit.

Trys could tell the girl was volatile, and that meant that she needed to be neutralized as a threat. At the end of the day, she was a Ranger, she wasn’t a Jedi. She wasn’t going to sweet talk her and she wasn’t going to put herself in danger to help her.

As soon as she saw the girl begin to lift her hand, Trys leveled and fired several shots at her torso. She could only hope that they would find purchase as she felt lightning begin to creep along her arm. Trys tried to duck to the side and out of the way, but she wouldn’t be able to keep it up for long.

Trys cried out in pain from the lightning, not having any real defense against it other than to throw off her focus.

“Stop this!” She called out through gritted teeth, trying to aim and fire a few more bolts at her, though she was moving too quick to aim.

It'd finally begun, and though she still loomed on the edge of that cliff in her mind, she couldn't turn back from what she'd started. It was too late, in more than one sense of the word.

She was moving to avoid the shots, but the sting of one of the bolts grazed just above her hip, costing Lilith precious focus on her attack. The snapping slowed to a stop with one final hiss as she stumbled to the side in pain.

Though Lilith's anger spurred her to call on the Force right after, to push Trys violently from one side, in an attempt to slam her against a wall. Hard enough to knock her out, or at least daze her for a few moments. There'd be no way for Lilith to move and push at the same time while she was wounded, so it was up in the air whether or not Trys could fire and land another shot during the action.

"I... can't..." Liltih grunted, uncaring if Trys heard it or not. What did it matter now?

“I’m not a Jedi,” Trys called out to the woman, “I don’t kriff around. I’m not gonna go easy on you just ‘cause you’re all kriffed in the head,” Anger seeped into her words, though most of it was driven by the pain she felt, “You clearly have a lot of issues to work out.”

She had seen what Talak was like when he snapped into darkness. There had been times when she was afraid of him. How could she expect this young woman come out of the Dark Side unscathed? Trys had no time to process anything as the Force abruptly sent her flying.

Trys collided heavily against a dumpster, firing off just one shot. It wasn’t a shot she could aim for while she was thrown. Pain surged through her body as she sat in a slump after the hit. Trys tried to get to her feet and stumble into cover in a nearby alley. She was vulnerable as well, and she had to choose between finding cover and pressing the attack. For now, she chose to find cover.

“Stop this bullshit! You gain nothing from it!"

There was a moment of pause before she spoke again.

"Talak punishes himself enough for what he has done to you and Ender."

"SHUT UP!" Lilith screamed as Trys shot flew past her, outstretching her hand to send a single, stray bolt near the woman. It was much further off the mark than even the first one due to an overwhelming flash of anger. It hit the wall as the darksider continued, "YOU'RE THE ONE WITH AN ISSUE RIGHT NOW!"

She watched Trys go into cover. Every part of her instincts said attack, but she hesitated as the ranger spoke. "Does he?" she said, words dripping from her mouth with venom and doubt. "Did he tell you he was the Arcanist too? Hm?" The darksider forced herself to stand straight, making her way towards the woman's location, lightsaber up in case she had to block a bolt or two.

But a laugh rumbled from her chest, warping quickly into a high pitch cackle. "Did he tell you he killed innocents wantonly? That he was more of a monster than I." Lilith suddenly grabbed a random trash can with the Force and slammed it towards where she thought Trys location might be. "HE TORTURED ME! HE BROKE MY MIND THEN FILLED IT WITH AGONY.. AND THEN HE LEFT!"

Trys ducked as the trash can came flying her way. As the woman spoke, Trys exhaled, finally beginning to see how torn up she was. There was a moment of silence for a few seconds before Trys spoke again.

“Yes, he did,” She said quietly, “He has told me everything,” Trys stepped out and was in view then. The gun was leveled and her grip shook from the pain in her arm. However, Trys wasn’t hiding anymore.

“If a monster like that can come back from darkness, so can you,” Trys glared at her, “You’re just looking for excuses. You want to use Talak leaving as an excuse to do what you really want to do. Remember….he never made you do anything.”

She had said these very words to Talak before, “You made every choice yourself. But you don’t want to admit it because it’s easier just to pin the blame on someone else and be a coward.”

The right path was always tougher. The world was full of people too weak to take it, and this woman was no different. Trys lived her entire life blaming other things for her problems - going from criminal to Ranger was the hardest thing she had ever done.

The young darksider watched Trys walk out, confusion on her face. She was angry that the woman would simply put herself in harms way. That she didn't just attack, but then her words crashed against Lilith's mind like a tidal wave, forcing her to stop in her tracks. She look away almost against her own will.

Was this what she wanted? Did she have control? Did she?

There was a long pause. The darksider brought her hand back to her forehead. She dug her nails deep into her face before she spoke again, "Did anyone tell you that you're infuriating?!" she spat.

She backpedaled, suddenly acutely aware of the pain in her side and the blood trickling down her hip. She clutched it. "What are you going to do next? Hug me?" she growled. "I'll fry your karking face off..."

Her mind couldn't take this anymore. She was so tired of it all, and all this woman did was add to her turmoil. Even just being faced with her. Face with this choice. Lilith hated her. HATED her, but she didn't know if she really wanted to...

"LEAVE! LEAVE ME!" a scream rang from her suddenly, and she looked back up at the woman as she brought her lightsaber up again. "NOW!"

Trys had to bite back from grinning as she asked if anyone had found her infuriating. She had been told that on many occasions, mostly by Talak of all people. She stood her ground, letting the woman lash out with her tirade. Trys wasn’t one to get riled up easily, and she simply stared at the woman.

As she finally screamed at her to leave, Trys allowed a moment of pause. She could see the woman was distraught, but she was an adult. She could make her choices and Trys wouldn’t urge her one way or the other. The Ranger had her blaster, but she didn’t shoot.

After a moment, she exhaled slowly and turned to walk away. It left her back vulnerable and exposed. It was entirely up to the Sith what choice she would make at that moment...

She half-expected the ranger to refuse to leave, and at least attempt to kill or subdue her. Lilith still belonged to the Sith after all, a group considered a terrorist organization.

But that hadn't stopped Trys from walking away from Lilith the first time. It was hard to understand the woman. A ranger yet one who not only walked away from Lilith twice now, but never reported Talak when he came to her.

Why?

It took a few moments lost in thought, but Lilith finally moved while Trys was walking away. At first only her chest as it rumbled off grunt. She grabbed a medpack from her belt after and threw it in one motion, so that'd it hopefully arch over Trys and land in front of her. With it's landing, Lilith turned and thumbed the trigger on her lightsaber. The red blade's humm vanished quickly, giving way to the first few droplets of rain.

She wiped a few droplets off her face and reminded herself that hadn't come here to kills Trys anyway. She'd come to find information on that Jedi Master.
