The transport slid into orbit. No large ships were allowed to land on the planet. Fiach and They would take a small cruiser to the surface.

The two Padawans stared down at the planet. From space, it looked blue-green, and Fiach knew that vast seas covered much of the surface. The main landmass was small and appeared as thought the seas around it would swallow it up.

She had visited many other worlds since she’d become a Padawan. It no longer surprised her when he saw planets whose surfaces were dominated by oceans and seas. As a young girl, she could not imagine seas that could stretch as far as the eye could see. On Klatooine, she had lived in an ocean of sand.

“Hard to imagine, isn’t it,” Eland said, breaking into Fiach’s thoughts. “When you look down at a planet, I mean.”

“What is?”
Fiach asked.

“Suffering,” Eland said. “Everything seems peaceful from orbit. Then you get down there, in the middle of things, and everything changes.”

“How many missions have you been on?”
Fiach asked.

“Enough,” Eland said softly. “Enough to have seen what I’ve seen. Enough to know I will see more.”

It sounded like a riddle. Yet, strangely, Fiach knew what he meant. Each mission made her feel so much older. Each mission had exposed her to sadness and anger and grief. Nevertheless, she looked forward to the next, and the next. That was what Eland meant.

It was strictly emphasised in the Jedi Temple that no student was better than another. Different students had different gifts. Yet Eland had them all. He was steady and brilliant, a physically gifted athlete, and popular with all the students.

He had excelled at everything he tried. Yet no student was jealous of him. They admired him and wanted to be like him. He was also popular with the Jedi Council. Fiach knew they expected great things of him. There was no one at the Temple who did not speak the name Eland without praise.

Except for Fiach. There was something about Eland she did not understand. It was not dislike, but rather something just out of reach that made her wary.

She realised this was not appropriate, of course. It was not up to Fiach to like or dislike a student. Judgment was not hers to pass down.

Eland expertly manoeuvred the craft down to the landing site. He came in fast and whipped the craft around, landing with a whisper-light touch that Fiach had to admire. All Jedi were good pilots, but it was rare to find someone who approached the task as artfully as Eland.

Eland activated the landing ramp, and they filed down onto the surface of the planet. Fiach reached out to the Force to feel what she could about the mission ahead. The Force was dark here. Fear had gripped the population – and with fear came desperation, anger, and chaos.

Several uniformed security officers waited at the transport desk. Someone dressed in a white unicoat hurried forward.

“Welcome, Jedi. We are relieved to see you. The city is under great stress.” He passed a hand over, his head full of curly brown hair. “The people don’t believe that there will be enough room on the ships. I am the coordinator of the rescue effort. The officials have abandoned the planet, so I suppose I’m now in charge. Only a small security force remains. I inherited this job – I’m normally a scientist.” He turned to the security officers. “Remain here with the Jedi ship.”

Suddenly, they heard the roar of engines. They turned just in time to see their transport lift off the landing pad and zoom high above.

The scientist turned to them, his round, ruddy face suddenly pale. “The security officers stole your ship. I am so sorry. Things here are very bad. Even the officers are panicking. Why shouldn’t they? Everyone else is, and their own leaders have fled. But don’t worry - I have a transport in a safe location. It is at your disposal.”

“We accept your offer with thanks,”
Eland said.

“What is your biggest problem at the moment?” Fiach asked.

“I have too many problems to single out one. The government is practically non-existent. The security officers – the ones who remain – are in danger of disbanding. You can see that loyalty has evaporated.”

They exited onto a boulevard and found themselves in the city centre. The streets were eerily empty.

They passed looted stores and houses. Doors were broken down and windows were smashed. Anyone they passed had at least one blaster prominently displayed on a hip or strapped across a chest.

Fiach had never seen anything like it. She could almost smell the fear in the air.

They walked by a small space cruiser, its interior bombed out and its engine looted.

“Most of the transports that have remained have been fought over and destroyed, there have been frenzied crowds desperate to get off-planet.”

“Tell us about the looters,” Eland said. “Do you have any clues as to who they are and where they are based?”

“No, and I don’t have time to find out. At any rate, we don’t have a security force to control them. I can tell you that the raiders have somehow stolen a small army of prototype Battle Droids from a research laboratory. They use the droids to control the situation while they steal the goods.”

Suddenly, they heard the sound of screams coming from the street ahead.

The Jedi did not stop to wonder. The Padawans charged ahead, running toward the source of the sound.

They rounded a corner. Ahead was a large, prosperous-looking house. Its windows had been hastily covered with durasteel panels. The door had been nailed shut with thick durasteel slabs crisscrossing it.

None of the attempts to make the house a fortress had worked. The door had been kicked in. Two of the windows had the durasteel torn away. Raiders were throwing goods out of the windows.

Twenty Battle Droids like none Fiach had ever seen were wheeling in formation. They had advanced repulsorlift systems, allowing them to move with astonishing speed above the surface of the ground. While they guarded a huddled group, locals systematically loaded the looted goods onto gravsleds.

One man lay on the ground in a spreading pool of blood. A female crouched over him. Children stood nearby, rooted to the spot, while another older female tried to herd them to safety.

Fiach saw all this at once. Her gaze took in the number of droids, the number of raiders, the civilians who must be protected, and the possible angles of attack.

The droids had a fluid movement she’d never seen before. They did not manoeuvre in a jerky, programmed fashion. It was almost as though they had grace built into their sensors, and their blaster accuracy ratio was much higher than the usual Battle Droid.

One of the raiders spotted them. Fiach saw his fingers fly on a remote device clipped to his belt. Five of the droids moved to surround the raiders for protection. The rest wheeled and came straight toward the Padawans in attack formation.

Eland was already Force-jumping toward the front line of droids.

Fiach leaped as well, keeping to Eland’s left so they could surround the droids, who were deftly moving over the ground. With one sweep of his lightsaber, Eland sliced a droid neatly in half. Simultaneously, Fiach did the same to the second. On her backswing, she took out a third.

Eland took out a droid on his way towards the civilians.

Fiach held her lightsaber at the ready. She took out two droids with two quick thrusts. Her body felt strong, her timing sharp. Still, she lagged behind Eland, who gracefully slid from one attack position to another. Each of his moves flowed into the next, with no beginning and no end. His lightsaber was a blur as it sliced efficiently and continuously through one droid after another.

The raiders took one look at how quickly the Jedi had reduced most of their droid squad to a smoking heap. And they ran.

The rest of the droids closed in to protect the raider’s retreat.

Eland moved aside so that Fiach could join him in protecting the civilians. Fiach kept her lightsaber moving, deflecting the fire as the family crouched behind them.

Given there were no ships to protect, Fiach considered their best next steps. “Safety patrols won’t accomplish much if we don’t flush out the raiders.”

“Hold it,”
Eland said. “That would be overstepping our instructions.”

“We’ve received no clear directions,”
Fiach pointed out. “We know our first priority is the safety of the citizens, and we can’t possibly accomplish that with safety patrols alone – especially with just the two of us. It’s a very large area to cover.”

“You don’t know that for sure,” Eland said. “And how do we progress?” he asked. “We don’t have the resources to comb the whole city.”

“We don’t have to. I have an idea,”
Fiach declared. “Even a Prototype Droid would have a homing device. All we have to do is take one of the droids we deactivated and tap into it.”

“Do you know how to do that?”
Eland asked.

“Sure,” Fiach replied.

“It can’t be that easy,” Eland said.

Fiach grinned. “I didn’t say it was easy. I said I could do it.”

“Hold on a second,”
Eland said. “These are Battle Droids. Most likely they undergo an automatic memory wipe if they are captured or deactivated.”

“There isn’t a memory wipe that I can’t get around,”
Fiach said confidently. “The homing device is coded into the main sensor suite. I can find it. If we revive a droid, it will lead us straight to the headquarters.”

Eland shrugged. “It’s worth a try.”

“I’ve got it!” Fiach said at last. “I reconnected the homing device to the locomotion sensor through the sensory plug-in. If I turn it on, the droid should head back to its origin point.”

“Let’s give it a try,”
Eland said.

Fiach switched on the droid. They stepped back as it beeped and checked circuits. Then suddenly it wheeled around and fired its repulsorlift engines, taking off down the boulevard.

The Padawans had to race to keep it in sight. They flew down the streets of the city, occasionally Force-jumping past obstacles. They quickly passed through the neighbourhood of fine homes, raced through a commercial district, and then found themselves outside a small warehouse. The droid hovered outside for a moment, its head rotating. The Padawans dived behind a wall.

They watched as the droid accessed a control panel hidden behind what appeared to be a sheer wall. A door slid open, and the droid disappeared inside.

Fiach leaped forward and shoved her lightsaber hilt between the closing door and its frame. The door stayed open a fraction. With Eland, she pushed it open the rest of the way. The Padawans slid inside.

It was a gloomy interior. At first they could see or hear little. Fiach concentrated. She detected the sound of voices. When their eyes had adjusted to the light a few moments later, they could see that the warehouse was full of items they could only assume were stolen. Rich tapestries and rugs were rolled and rested against the walls. Silver and intricate metalwork objects were stacked on shelves. Fiach saw gold and aurodium ingots heaped in a corner. Durasteel bins were no doubt filled with more valuables.

The voices were coming from around the corner. It was the raiders.

The Padawans crept closer. Now they could make out words.

The sound of soft laughter came to the Padawans. “They’d better come through on their promise to move all this stuff–”

The voice broke off as an insistent beep began to sound. It played through several coded sequences.

Fiach heard the sound of chairs scraping. “It’s the droid,” someone said in a low tone. “That’s the activation signal for tampering. Someone might be here.” The voices fell silent. Fiach could just make out a whisper of movement, and then stillness.

The raiders suddenly raced around the corner, blasters in hand. Fiach’s view on such encounters was simple. Take no lives. Somehow, she would have to deflect blaster fire and capture the raiders without harming them.

As Fiach swung her lightsaber in a blur, deflecting fire, she realised for the first time that they had over looked something.

If they caught the raiders, what would they do with them?

There weren’t enough security officers to guard the criminals. The Jedi were now the backbone of the security force on the planet. If they watched the raiders, who would patrol the city?

The present moment is the crucial moment.

Fiach gritted her teeth and advanced toward the raiders. One thing at a time. The raiders were endangering the citizens and must be stopped. The Padawans would figure out what to do with them when the time came.

One of the raiders must have activated some droids, for suddenly they appeared. They wheeled into battle formation and came at the Padawans.

Fiach at first felt confident that they could defeat the droids. Within moments she saw that they would have a hard time winning this battle.

The raiders manoeuvred the droids to come between them and the Jedi. Then they disappeared. Too occupied with the attacking droids, the Padwans could not follow.

As one unit, they could probably defeat fifteen droids. The Padawans kept close together, attacking and retreating, trying to pick up on one another’s unfamiliar rhythms. Fiach lost herself in the Force. There was only the smell of the smoking droids, the blur of her lightsaber, the balance and heft of it in her hand. He saw everything at once – Eland, the attack pattern of each droid, the moves they would make next. Her focus was complete. She sliced through one droid, then pivoted and buried his lightsaber in another droid’s control panel.

Eland dived and came up underneath a droid, halving it down the middle. He then whirled and kicked one droid while cutting off the legs of another. He always landed exactly where he’d planned, ready to launch another attack or defend her fellow Padawan. His face never registered effort, only concentration.

At last the droids lay in heaps around them. The Padawans were exhausted.

“We still might be able to track the raiders,” Fiach said, panting. She started to rise. “Let’s go.”

“Wait.”
Eland put a hand on her sleeve. “If we run off we could lose a precious opportunity.”

Fiach’s face show the puzzlement she felt.

“Information. It’s more important then the raiders themselves. What will we do with them when we get them, anyway? Better to head them off another way. We have more important tasks. Once the evacuation starts, we’ll be needed.”

“We need to examine this hideout,” Eland said. “I have a feeling it has something to teach us. If we can figure out their plan, we can be ahead of them instead of behind them. There’s got to be a datapad here somewhere. They left too fast to destroy their records.”

“Over here!” Eland called. “I found their holofiles.”

The files had been concealed in a durasteel bin just like countless others that lined the walls.

“How did you find them,” Fiach asked.

Eland was already accessing the files. “I figured that they had been consulting the files while they were talking. The slight delay before they came to attack us meant they were concealing them. They had to be nearby.”

“Good thinking,”
Fiach said admiringly.

The Padawans bent over the files.

“These are lists of assets held by individual families,” Fiach said. “How could they have gotten them?”

“Look at these notations. They’re coded ECC.”

“Emergency Command Center,”
Fiach murmured.

“These files were drawn us so that if the entire planet had to be evacuated, there would be records of what was left behind,” Eland said. “That way they could recover everything later.”

“So the raiders must have stolen these files,”
Fiach added.

“Or bribed someone on the evacuation team to hand them over,” Eland said.

Fiach nodded. “The city is falling apart and they see an opportunity. But are they counting on coming back to the planet for this stuff, or do they have plans to take it with them? It would be hard to smuggle it aboard the evacuation ship. The families are only allowed what they can carry.”

Eland reached around his head with one flexible arm to scratch his ear thoughtfully. “The raiders said something about ‘they’ had better come through on their promise to move the stuff. Who’s ‘they’?”

“Maybe they have a contact who will help them smuggle it,”
Fiach said, frowning.

Eland was right. Eland was always right. Except when he was wrong.

Fiach hurried along the streets with her fellow Padawan. News of the delay of the evacuation ships had been broadcast and a riot had broken out in the last remaining shop to sell bio-isolation suits. While she raced along, Fiach’s mind was busy furiously reviewing the situation.

“As long as we keep our lightsabers sheathed,” Eland spoke up suddenly. Fiach looked at him. “We can handle the riot peacefully,” he explained.

Now they could hear the roar of the crowd ahead. They picked up their pace and raced to the spot.

Blasters had been drawn. People lay bleeding on the streets. More pushed to get inside the store. Bio-suits had been torn to shreds by competing civilians. Over a voice amp system, the shop owner was desperately attempting to quiet the crowd.

Fiach made his way to the frightened owner. “I must use your voice amp,” she told him. “I can calm the crowd.”

The owner handed her the amp. “Be my guest.”

Fiach spoke clearly into the amp system. “New ships have pledged to airlift the citizens off-planet. They are achieving orbit now. There is room everyone. You will be evacuated before the winds shift.”

A few citizens closest to the amp heard the message and began to talk among themselves. Fiach repeated the message. Gradually, the crowd began to settle down.

“Where do we report to? How will this be handled?” someone called.

“The evacuation team will alert each of you where and when to show up,” Fiach announced. “But that means you must return to your homes.”

Slowly the crowd began to disperse. The crisis was averted. But the owner’s business had been completely destroyed.

The Padawans hurried to the command center. The scientist was just tossing a small survival kit into his airspeeder.

“Going somewhere?” Fiach asked.

“Of course I am,” he answered. “As soon as everyone is safely off the planet.”

“You seem to be in a special hurry,”
Eland observed.

The scientist gave an exasperated sigh. “What are you getting at now?”

“We have solid information that someone is leaking information,”
Fiach said. “And we think you know something about it.”

The scientist chuckled, shaking his head. “You kids sure come up with some incredible theories. I’ve been trying to help the citizens!”

The scientist looked hurt, but not angry. Fiach did not pick up anything amiss. But she would readily admit she was not adept at reading the true motives of other beings yet. But then Fiach remembered his anxiousness to get away. No doubt he had a rendezvous to keep.

“I say we just stay with you until the ships arrive,” Fiach said.

Eland’s eyes flickered as he understood Fiach’s strategy. “I agree.”

“This is ridiculous!”
the scientist exploded. Finally, they had cracked his wounded composure. “I refuse, after all I’ve done, to subject myself to these suspicions.”

He jumped inside the airspeeder and revved the engine. But he hadn’t counted on the quick reflexes of the Padawans. Fiach reached over and shut off the engine as Eland jumped in and accessed the onboard computer. He read out the coordinates that flashed on the screen.

But what to do? Fiach closed her eyes.

Trust yourself. Breathe in your instinct. Then act.

She reached out to the Force, to a place that she knew well.

The Padawans commandeered the scientist’s airspeeder. Eland gave a stark warning. “The coordinates take us straight into the cloud.”

“But the scientist had no bio-suit,”
Fiach countered. But even so, Fiach was a little worried. She was betting everything on her intuition. If she were wrong, the consequences would be severe. She could die, along with Eland.

I’m not wrong.

She could feel Eland’s eyes on her. She kept her gaze forward as she piloted the craft.

Ahead they saw the energy gate that led to the rendezvous point. The speeder bleeped and the energy gate opened. They zoomed through.

For a moment, they held their breath. Then Eland took a deep breath. Fiach did the same.

“Well, there’s no turning back now, and we have surprise on our side,” she said.

“We’re going to need more than surprise if there are more of those Prototype Droids,” Eland remarked.

“We’re coming up on the rendezvous now,” Fiach warned and she slowed down slightly. Ahead she only saw what looked like scribble markings on the ground. Then she realized the markings revealed deep cracks in the ground surface.

Fiach zoomed down a canyon. She hugged the canyon walls, going as fast as she dared. By the look on Eland’s face, it was faster than the other Padawan would like.

Ahead she saw the large, hulking shape of a transport ship. It was idling, its repulsorlift engines on low, keeping it a few metres off the ground. Dust rose around it in a filmy cloud. Fiach grew excited.

“I’ve seen that kind of transport before,” she said. “It’s a smaller version of a Multi Troop Transport. They store Battle Droids and are usually piloted by two droids.”

“Wait!” Eland shouted.

Fiach slowed and turned to face her fellow Padawan.

“We need a plan.”

Fiach was not known for her tactical foresight.

“We have a couple of advantages. One is surprise. The other is that we know what we’re facing. So, we need to get aboard and somehow deactivate the droids.”

Fiach nodded.

“The question is, how do we get aboard?” Eland asked.

Fiach fitted a filter mask over her nose and pulled her hood up. Eland did the same. They slipped goggles out from their utility belts and pulled them on.

As soon as the sentry droids’ heads turned the opposite way and they were no longer in their sight line, they ran.

Finally, she held up a hand, feeling along the underside of the ship. The sand and dust were so disorienting it was hard to visualise where she was. Then she felt a raised piece of metal. Could it be the repulsor cooling fins? She ran a hand along one ridge, then another. That meant the vents were just ahead.

The wind blasts were stronger than she’d anticipated. She could feel Eland battling the wind beside her.

Fiach reached the vents. She hoisted herself up and inside, spreading her hands out to support herself against the rounded walls and bracing herself with his feet. The wind pushed against her, but she was able to move slowly up the shaft, metre by metre, first using one hand and foot, then the other. Eland was directly beneath her.

Halfway up the vent, Fiach felt as though her legs were made of ferrocrete and his arm muscles had begun to shake. One foot slid and she almost lost her position and fell. She felt Eland touch her back. Fiach turned, and Eland motioned to her. He would lead the way.

His body now acted as a shield. It gave Fiach a chance to restore her own strength.

At last the vent opened out into the engine room, next to the humming repulsorlift generators. Fiach and Eland collapsed on the floor, trying to catch their breath.

They got to their feet and looked around the engine room.

“I’d say–” Eland started.

“That way,” Fiach agreed.

Once they left the engine room, they had to turn sideways to navigate the corridor. Every centimetre of space was used on the vessel to pack in droids. They squeezed past the empty troop deployment racks and climbed a narrow metal staircase to the bridge. Outside the bridge door they activated their lightsabers. Taking a breath for concentration, they accessed the door and burst inside.

The droids swiveled, instantly taking in the danger. Their arms moved forward in blast mode.

Fiach and Eland were faster. They somersaulted in the air and came down with their lightsabers, each neatly slicing a droid in half.

Fiach kicked aside the droid and immediately moved to the controls. She studied them.

“It’s okay. These controls are basic. You’d better strap into the co-pilot’s seat. It might be rough going.”

Experimentally, Fiach eased the controls forward. The ship gave a great lurch. Eland hadn’t had a chance to sit, and he went flying. He landed on the floor.

Might be rough?”
Eland picked himself up, kicked the droid out of the way, and sat in the co-pilot’s seat.

The next time Fiach eased the controls, the ship moved more smoothly. This was no nimble starfighter. This was a lumbering beast.

They came across a battle scene. The other Jedi teams on one side and the battle droids on the other.

Eland flicked a switch and nothing happened. He tried it again. “I can’t deactivate them.”

Fiach frowned. “Then we’re going to have to do it ourselves.”

The droids were relentless, and there were so many of them. They estimated seventy to eighty. The Jedi must have taken out at least twenty, maybe more. But there were at least fifty still out there.

The lumbering craft moved with lurching power as it mowed down most of the entire droid platoon. What it didn’t cut down immediately was reduced to scrap by blasting proton cannons.

A loud banging rang through the canyon. The battered and bent hatch on top of the bridge popped open, and Fiach emerged.

She waved.

“It was a cunning plan,” the Jedi Master explained. “The poison had a short half-life. The aim was to get the population to evacuate and then capture it. Possession is a significant factor still in galactic politics. It would have been a bloodless invasion.”

Fiach was being debriefed.

“Your efforts were well recognised,” he told her. “Not only did you act bravely, you worked well with the other Padawan. I heard how you collaborated on the final plan to rescue us. You have learned a valuable Jedi lesson. You subdued your own will to listen to others. As a result, you gained strength.”

“I was ready to rush in without a plan,”
Fiach admitted. “It was Eland who stopped me. He was right.”

“But time and time again you went with what you felt was right. And then, at the crucial moment, you deferred to another. The Council are in agreement that you have passed the Trial of Instinct.”

JEDI TRIAL: FORGIVENESS

“If you define yourself by your power to take life, your desire to dominate, to possess, then you have nothing.”
— Obi-Wan Kenobi

It was a routine mission. Even with the odds that such an undertaking would prove to be a challenging one, it was on the surface going to be a struggle for Fiach. The brief was simple. Her presence was necessary not because of danger but because diplomacy was required.
Which, on the face of it made sense.

Except…

Except was, to Fiach at least, one of the most challenging words in the Basic language. It opened up such a myriad of possibilities that logic was rendered almost redundant.

Almost, but not quite.

She was to accompany a diplomatic ship. That was easy enough. But the diplomats did not like or welcome any Jedi presence. That wasn’t easy but it was within her skill-set. But they knew a Jedi presence was necessary. That made it easier if anything.
It was the threat to the ship that would cause a problem. A pirate. That was OK, she’d dealt with pirates before. This pirate was named Pestana.

That was her problem.
