Juri was considered something of a “catch” when it came to a group like the Rust Company. Not only was she a skilled combatant, but she was a former Ranger. That came with all the martial prowess and magic capability she needed to handle most things bandits took on. Seemed like she finally had a chance to flex a little.

The cart rocked violently as one of the wheels broke causing the chassis to collapse to one side and drag. The horses were no longer able to pull the cart and now were sufficiently spooked to the point she wasn’t going to get them going again. She heard the shooter bark out at them. Dropping the reins she drew a short spear from her back and jumped to the side of the cart. Raising her hand she cast entangle as soon as she made the shooter. Instantly weeds and vines began to sprout from the ground at his feet as the flora attempted to wrap him.

Using this moment of hopeful distract she charged the man, drawing a handaxe in her off hand, “Don’t worry! We’re coming!” she shouted as her men followed her lead.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two archers fell quickly to Ta’s fire. They just hadn’t been trained to fight someone with repeating firearms. The common gun found around these parts of Aureus needed to be manually loaded after every shot with the Avalaran military possessing pepperboxes that could fire four shots at most and needing a free hand to rotate the barrels. The remaining archer held back. This wasn’t a fight she could win. Shooting a glance to Torfa’s group who had been whittled down to just two gave her the final push. Ducking her head she ducked her head and fled into the woods.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Torfa’s opening move was usually to provoke a class and then overpower his foes. Locking blades and using his strength to brute force through their stance worked most of the time. As his longsword met Vulpes’ defenses he planted his feet and began to push into the attack.

“COME ON!” he gleefully shouted.

Torfa wasn’t accounting for the proverbial steel of his opponent though. She seemed unfazed by his shock and awe tactics and as soon as he began to push into the attack he found his blade parried. Instinctively, Torfa shifted his footwork and attempted to prepare for a counter. He was a little shook, but that made this all the more exciting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Sorry, miss,” the orc shot a glance to his boss for a moment before squaring up against the caitsith again, “Boss’ boss would have my ass if I backed down now.”

The orc was of typical size for someone of his ancestry, but his build was far more athletic than the stereotype. He had gotten by with taking advantage of his unexpected nimbleness and his choice of weapons played to that. He was regretting his lack of range though in this situation. Plus, he had really run into a bit of bad luck being forced up against a caster. Should he take her up on the deal? Or was it just words to get him to hesitate so she could cast another spell.

He lunged forward, leading with his buckler, he just needed to get her blade out of the way like last time to close into the effective range of his shortsword.

As the vines began to wrap around his ankles and up his legs Oma remained focused solely on the bandits in front of him. He knew he couldn't afford to have his eyes off-target for even a moment or they'd close the distance and he'd lose his advantage. Instead he stood in place, allowing the spell to restrain his feet as he fired on the charging bandits.

Meanwhile Ta finished off the archers, bringing down two more and then following the last as she turned to flee. His sights followed her, the Peacemaker prepared to fire. But he hesitated. Shooting someone in the back, even a criminal that had been trying to kill him moments earlier, felt more than a little dishonorable. Feeling his brother was in danger the Gemini instead huffed as he turned and started back towards camp, leaving the bandit to escape.

Ta rushed through the foliage, bursting back into the camp. It was still a chaotic scene, with multiple dead on each side, but the tide seemed to have turned in their favor. In the distance he could see where the cart had tried to flee and been stopped by his brother, who was now immobilized by an entangle spell with three bandits bearing down on him. Ta hurried towards them, though the caravan members prevented him from getting a clear shot. This would be close...

Vulpes saw combat as the final option in resolving matters, but she also believed she was given her gifts by the gods for a reason. And she was prepared to use them.

As their blades locked, Vulpes initially allowed Torfa to maintain contact. She wanted to get the measure of his strength – which was formidable. In a sense, this was the hardest of duels to predict. Usually, within a few seconds, both combatants know who is going to win. But when two quite different styles clash, it is much harder to call. Would Torfa overpower Vulpes and beat her into submission? Or would the holy warrior keep moving, tiring the bandit out until his one advantage – strength – was negated?

Of course, they both knew the other’s tactics – so the only question was, who was more used to the other’s fighting style?

As Vulpes allowed her sword to slide away from the contact, she flicked his blade, to parry it and began to move. Not in circles, that would be tiring, but she was in constant motion. Big blows required a static target to be most effective. For now, she was happy to simply parry and make no attempt to hit her target, testing his endurance.

A disappointed "oh," was all Kestra managed to say before the orc charged her again.

The caitsith wasn't about to try the same trick twice, given her heart skipped a beat the last time she slipped out of danger, instead giving more ground as the orc's attacks made it difficult for her to line up a proper shot. Each time, the orc would use buckler or shortsword to redirect her blade followed by an attack with the other in his hand. It took every move in her book for Kestra to avoid getting sliced to pieces or battered into submission. Her slothful side lamented the circumstances, but there was no point in whining over it.

Kestra bit her lip as it became clearer with every attack that the orc fighter will eventually land a blow. She was tiring of the fight, both physically and mentally. Instead of resigning herself to her fate, she did what any logical mage would do: change the rules. With magic, of course.

Rather than try to aim at the orc, Kestra changed her target. "Ifrit!"

The fireball shot past the orc, heading straight for the dwarf that clashed with the paladin. By no means was it a perfect shot, but hopefully the unexpected attack will bring an end to that fight sooner.

Torfa tracked the Paladin as the attack was parried. He let out a hearty laugh. She was nimble, something he wasn’t particularly good against; but that didn’t mean he didn’t know HOW to fight her. The dwarf would have loved to relish the fight if it had been one on one, but there was another fighter in the proximity he couldn’t risk becoming a liability if he took his time.

As Torfa and Vulpes distanced themselves for the next clash he shot a quick glance to see how his compatriot was faring. As his eyes reached his periphery he heard a shout. “Ifrit!” A brilliant flame enveloped Torfa, this time the focus of the blast meant his luck had ran out. He barely got a shout out before his charred body slumped to the ground.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The orc engaging Vestra set his foot ready to lunge when the caitsith aimed her blade and shot a spell to his left. Torfa! He wheeled around to see his boss immolated. That changed things. His mind raced through the possibilities while still trying to register Torfa as dead. Hadn’t been a terrible boss except for the times he’d get drunk and get into fights with the crew to wager their shares from jobs. He had allies still alive, but was pretty far from them. No arrows meant no archers so something had happened there.

The obvious choice surged to the forefront of his mind. The orc turned and dropped his shortsword and buckler. He held his hands up in front of him.

“Alright, offer still on the table? Mort’s the name by the way.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juri dashed out of the way of a shot from the Peacemaker, the second explosion of fire from Torfa’s fight not even registering with her. The bullet intended for her clipped a fellow Rust member behind her.

“Idiot shouldn’t have lined up,” she thought to herself. She’d agonize over the callousness later, but it kept her head in the game. She heaved her spear at her immobile target once in range and kept her axe in two hands as she charged forward. She had no choice, but to commit at this point.

Oma's eyes widened in surprise as the ranger managed to dodge his shot. That wasn't good. As she hurled the spear towards him the Gemini cursed under his breath and bent backwards to let the weapon sore inches over his head, falling down on his back in the process and becoming further restrained by the entangle spell. Now unable to defend himself he looked up at the still charging bandit fearfully.

"Brother?" He shouted nervously as he tried in vain to wrest his arms and legs from the vines. "Help!" On his end Ta pushed his way past the last of the caravan members and quickly raised his rifle. Without wasting a second he would aim a shot at Juri's center of mass to make sure he hit. He would put as many shots in her as were necessary to stop her attack.

Afterwards if he successfully brought her down he would move his sights to the last remaining bandit. He would be prepared to fire, but hold off, giving them a chance to surrender if they had the sense to do so.

Vulpes was totally focused on the task in hand, and so only registered the incoming fireball at the last moment. Was the duel going her way? In a sense, it was too early to tell – but she was sure now that she did not have any element of surprise in her fighting style, her opponent seemed too comfortable for that to be the case.

Which became an academic debate as one moment Vulpes was fighting and the next she was facing the remains of a charred corpse. Sure he was dead, she turned her attention to her companion but by this time, she had her own battle in control – as the orc surrendered.

Then, glancing around the camp-site, she looked to see if anyone was in close proximity and in need of help. None were, but there was an ongoing duel a little way away, so – with a nod of thanks to her saviour – she trotted over to see if she could lend a hand.

Kestra mentally sighed in relief. Perhaps she had underestimated her own skill for the orc to not simply overpower her in their duel. But the caitsith could not let the orc see that. She took her hat in hand to fan herself, flicking aside the sword and buckler so that they were not within easy reach. Kestra could see from the corner of her eye the holywoman taking off to help quell the remainder of the campsite battle, leaving this a one on one affair. That will not be a problem.

Truth be told, she did not have a plan for what to do with the orc, but that did not stop Kestra from playing the part. As long as the orc believed that there is a way out through negotiation, Kestra was willing to play along. It, at least, is the preferable alternative to getting cut to ribbons by the much stronger orc.

"Indeed, it is, Mork," she told the orc. Kestra only realized her mistake after her tongue slipped. Damn. She pretended to not notice the error.

"Please take a seat, as you are," she waved her rapier in his general direction.

The caitsith pulled up an overturned chair, setting it upright before taking a seat and pulling a handkerchief from her pocket to clean her blade. After giving a moment for the two to catch their breaths, she began.

"Perhaps we can begin with the meaning of..." Kestra waved her handkerchief hand to the messy surrounds. "All of this. Surely your boss, or boss's boss, had greater intentions than to terrorize caravans. Do they seek plunder? Or a person of note?"

Traveling the long road between Naruub and Aureus alone wasn't something most people advised, but Alym was never really one to listen to the warnings of others. Truth be told, she found that you encountered a lot more interesting people and curious events when you didn't follow the safe path through life.

As luck would have it, Alym stumbled upon one of those curious events when she noticed the distinct sounds of battle echoing out from somewhere just off the road a little ways ahead of her. Changing her peaceful meandering into a light trot, Alym arrived on the scene just as someone got turned into a roast duck.

While it seemed that this caravan was guarded by able warriors - at least judging from the dead bandits scattered about - Alym figured it was worth seeing if they still needed help. Of course, this also meant she could show herself as just a passing stranger and not some sort of backup for the bad guys.

Keeping her rapier on her hip for now, Alym called out towards the Caitsith who looked like she was negotiating some kind of surrender. Are you guys alright, do you need any help? Looking around, the young Vampire shrugged her shoulders. I came from just down the road when I heard the sounds of fighting. Didn't see any backup coming for these guys, in case you were worried.

Shots rang out to Juri’s side. Instinctively, she cast misty step, bullets whizzing through a cloud of magical vapors and striking her last remaining comrade. She reappeared over her target and grabbed the prone gunslinger by the neck and lifted him out of her entangle enough to be used as a shield. She held an axe to his neck as she located the shooter.

“Juri!” a familiar voice shouted to her left. Just the voice. She heard no fighting.

Not taking her eyes off the other shooter for an instant she shouted back, “Mort! What’s going on? If you got time to talk you got time to help me out here!”

“Give up, Juri…, “ Mort he had taken a seat like Kestra ordered and kept his hands aloft, “Torfa’s dead Juri. So’s everyone else. They got us.”

Juri cursed under her breath. Her pulse quickened for a second as she gripped the axe handle tightly. Her hand felt like it’d go numb. Slowly she gave in to reason. She dropped her axe to the ground and uncast her entangle spell. She sunk to her knees.

Mort’s face softened as he saw Juri relent. Better their lives than their freedom if they could manage it.

“They don’t tell us much in Rust Company,“ He turned to Kestra. “Do what you’re told and you’ll be taken care of. Torfa was the only guy who knew anyone else. Far as I can gather we operate in cells. We were just doing protection stuff a few days ago until Torfa got a message at camp. Said it was from ‘Asher’.”

Mort turned as he saw a new figure announce themselves. He’d let his captors sort that out before he continued.

Ta growled in anger as his shots passed harmlessly through the ranger, desperation starting to paint his features. When she grabbed Oma and held her axe to his throat his eyes went wide, that desperation turning to rage. He gripped his rifle tightly as he lined up his sights on her, though she used his brother as a human shield.

"Drop your weapon! Now!" He shouted in a voice more forceful than one might expect from someone of his size. But she didn't comply. There was a moment of tense standoff between the two before the orc pleaded with her to surrender. When she did, and the entangle spell dropped, Oma immediately scrambled backwards to get some distance between himself and the ranger. Ta on the other hand, face still contorted in fury, began walking forwards, rifle still trained on her head.

"Brother," Oma started warningly as he stood up and held a hand out. "She's surrendered now. Let's not do anything rash..." Ta didn't reply. He stopped right over the kneeling ranger, the barrel of his rifle hovering just above her forehead. As he stared her down gritting his teeth his finger started to curl around the trigger. Oma edged closer and gently laid a hand on his shoulder. "This isn't how we do things." He reminded him. Ta hesitated, eyeing the ranger a few more moments, then grunted as he shouldered his rifle. Oma patted him on the shoulder.

With this decision made Ta seemed to very quickly calm down to the point he was in harmony with his brother again. He removed his glasses for a moment and pulled a soft piece of cloth from his pocket to clean them. Meanwhile Oma knelt down behind the ranger to start tying her hands. "Best see to that injury now." He commented. Ta glanced at his wounded shoulder as he put his glasses back on.

"Such a nice shirt too..." He muttered before turning and walking back towards the others. He took a moment to return to their supplies to start applying first aid to himself while he heard the orc talking with the caitsith. "He's telling the truth." The Gemini confirmed the orc's words as he approached the others. "The Rust Company is wide spread, very decentralized. We've had run ins with them in Naruub. Heard of this Asher too, he's never been seen though. It's likely their leader was the only one that knew the whole story." He glanced at the still smoking corpse of the dwarf. "Unfortunately..." Looking back at the paladin and caitsith he quickly removed his hat and gave a very short bow of his head. "Forgive me. Ta Arkwright, that over there is Oma. We appreciate your help." He turned his attention next to the new arrival. "And uh... My apologies Miss, are you from the caravan?"

Vulpes looked around. The scene had gone from a desperate one to a relatively calm one very, very quickly. Yes, there was the issue of captives to manage – would anyone come looking for them, or might they try to escape. But for now, at least, the first incident had passed relatively successfully.

She nodded to the two that carried firearms and to the caitsith that saved her and then to the newcomer – for she knew already she had joined since the attack, such was her attention to detail.

And then she wandered over towards the caitsith, to hear what the orc might be able to tell them of their attackers.

When another approached, Kestra whipped her weapon around to face the newcomer. But she relaxed once the Caitsith saw that the traveler's weapon was sheathed. She did not recognize the newcomer's voice or mannerisms as one of the caravaners. Even considering that it is odd for a someone to happen to be traveling in the middle of the night, Kestra had no reason not to entertain her question.

"It would appear everything is under control," Kestra answered as she saw in the corner of her eye the last of the bandits surrendering to the Gemini peacemakers.

As one of the Gemini explained Rust Company, it became evident that it is ironically her fault that they won't get much information. how was she supposed to know the dwarf was their leader? Better yet, how was she supposed to know that the dwarf was the only one with all of the information they would be interested in? Few, if any, young mages had any interest in learning about criminal organizations.

"I will be sure to study harder for the brigand exam," she haughtily told the Gemini before turning back to the orc.

"So are you telling me that Tarfo gave you no instructions other to attack this caravan? Not even to avoid destroying anything that may be noteworthy for later examination?" she asked Mort, oblivious to the misspoken name she used.

Caravan? Alym asked, confused, before realizing the answer to the question was relatively obvious. Oh, no, I just happened to be traveling along the road when I heard some commotion. Figured I'd lend a hand but you all had it under control by the time I got here.

Without much more context of what exactly was going on, Alym returned to being quiet and listened to what the others were talking about. Rust Company, eh? Alym hadn't had any prior experience with the group, but from the looks of it they were little more than ruthless bandits looking to take advantage of people they thought wouldn't be able to defend themselves. Gross.

As far as Alym could tell, this Mort person seemed completely useless. If there was information to be had, it seemed unlikely that it existed in his minuscule brain. Deciding to interject - hopefully the others wouldn't be offended by this - Alym approached Mort, resting her hand on the hilt of her rapier casually.

Then take us to your camp. There might be information in your boss's belongings that could prove useful.

Even if the others decided they didn't want to abandon their caravan, Alym was willing to go to the camp alone. If there was one thing she hated, it was bandits who didn't care who they hurt or who they killed. She would end them if given the chance.

Some caravan members were slowly beginning to awaken. Slowly, as they shook off the sleep, they began to take stock after the attack. Some wept over the injured bodies of their friends or families as a cleric made rounds, others rifled through their wagons to see if anything had been taken. A group of uniquely dressed individuals approached their now ruined cart. Its wheel having been shot out by one of the gunslingers that, unknown to them, had probably saved them. They took care in removing their cargo from the destroyed cart as they deliberated what to do.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juri walked over and took a place next to her comrade as the gemini escorted her. She didn’t much care to be a prisoner, but she was starting to calm down. Mort was right. The Rust Company had gambled and the dice came out in favor of these individuals. What were they? An adventuring party? Strangers united by fate just to stop them? She’d let Mort do the talking for now.

"So are you telling me that Tarfo gave you no instructions other to attack this caravan? Not even to avoid destroying anything that may be noteworthy for later examination?"

“Only thing I knew was we were after that,” Mort raised a finger to the destroyed cart as its owners were extracting a large coffin-like object, “Haven’t the foggiest idea what it is or what we wanted with it.”

The whole thing skeeved both the orc and elf out, honestly. Nothing good came from messing around with anything to do with funerary practices.

“Then take us to your camp. There might be information in your boss's belongings that could prove useful.”

Mort shrugged, “I can do that, it’s honestly not much. It's off in the forest a ways, I imagine any of ours that fled are already picking through it before taking off.”

"If they take my shit, they're dead," Juri interjected

Torfa usually kept them moving around a lot. Best to avoid Avalaran military or adventurers from pinning down their operation. Unfortunately meant they kept very little in the way of personal items.

"I will be sure to study harder for the brigand exam," The Caitsith said in what sounded a little bit defensive to the Gemini. Ta couldn't help but grin a bit.

"Oh I meant no offense Miss," He assured her. "I've got no reservations with you doing what needs be done in your own self defense. I was just meaning to say it's a shame is all." He then turned his attention back to Alym as she gave her explanation for being there. "Well that's very kind of you Miss. We appreciate the thought. If you're on your way to Harvest you're welcome to tag along." Privately the twins wondered if this new arrival was yet another member of the Rust Company. Perhaps meant to be an infiltrator. It seemed unlikely, but they resolved to keep an eye on her non the less.

When the Orc mentioned the wagon they had tried to steal Oma looked back in it's direction, noticing the strange cargo being brought out. he squinted suspiciously at it but said nothing for the time being. They could question the cargo's keepers later.

“Then take us to your camp. There might be information in your boss's belongings that could prove useful.” The new arrival said next.

"I'll have to disagree with you there Miss," Oma cut in. "We need to stay with the caravan, make sure no other bandits get any ideas. Not to mention these prisoners need to be looked after and I wouldn't rely on civilians to do that for us. We should finish our journey to Harvest and inform the proper authorities once we get there." As much as the twins didn't like the idea of outing themselves while they were still trying to take their quarry unawares they had to obey protocol. They had no jurisdiction in Avalar and neither did these adventurers.

The encounter had completed with relatively minimum damage. Yes, it was true that some had died, but the righteous had prevailed. Of course, she was still wary – sometimes if it seemed too easy, it was because it was. Was this newcomer a part of the attacking party? She had no reason to believe she was, but she would be wary for sure – until she could be sure she could trust her.

So, as she began to relax, she listened and observed as many of the conversations as she could – hoping to glean enough information to build as complete a picture as she could to the bandit’s motives. Yes, sure, there were always pickings to be had – but this seemed a coordinated and organised effort.

From time to time she stopped and offered a word of comfort – a phrase or passage from her holy tome – but otherwise she kept moving.

Finally, Vulpes happened upon the conversation at the point where the coffin-shaped object was referred to. Maybe it contained valuables, hidden in the casket. Or perhaps it was the deceased themselves that was of value to someone? Stranger things had happened.

She was about to voice concern at splitting up the caravan, to go off in search of a temporary camp-site, when she was beaten to it. So instead she nodded her approval at the twins’ approach.

Like the others, Kestra looked over at the wagon that the orc indicated. She would not have thought much of the coffin that formed the centerpiece of the collection, but that may be by design. The Peacekeepers made more sense to the Caitsith, particularly when the newcomer who happened to appear as they cleaned up a bandit attack did not prove herself trustworthy yet.

"It would appear we have a consensus," she nodded to the Gemini.

Standing back up, Kestra gestured for the orc to raise with her handkerchief hand. Similar to the suggestion of venturing to their camp, Kestra was not too keen on having the newcomer handle her well-earned captive.

"In the meantime, may we find place for these ruffians to stay until morning? A touch of hospitality, but nothing more," Kestra added.

She folded her handkerchief and pocketed it, leaving only her still-drawn rapier at her side. The Caitsith felt certain that their prisoners will not struggle further, but she still held her reservations regarding the mysterious night-time traveler.

“Thank you, ma’am,” Mort said to the caitsith, “I know by all rights we deserve very little.”

Mort jabbed his knee into Juri’s thigh to get her to speak up.

“Yeah, sure,” she said with a consistent monotone, “Thrilled”

“Juri,” Mort whispered harshly and not quite covertly, “You alive ain’t ya?”

The elf forced a polite grin before being led to wherever her and her orc compatriot would be held for the night. It was anyone’s guess where things would end up from there.

---------------------------------------

Meanwhile.

He never liked complications. They were always so much work. And this? This was a lot of work. Not only were they assaulted by bandits, but they almost were part of one of the biggest political gaffes of the decade.

Seti-nekht wiped his brow and overlooked his team making sure the coffin of the Pharoah’s late husband was properly cared for. They’d need a new cart to carry the body in, but the right amount of coin would probably get one of these cravaneers to accommodate them. It’d been a long journey from Theed and he cursed the gods that at the halfway point on his journey something like this would happen. Or rather he cursed the gods he did not actively venerate. He was sure the ones he did pray to would appreciate that.

Seti-nekht turned his eyes to the adventurers who seemingly saved everyone from the brigands. Perhaps they would be interested in some coin and a free trip to Heksetr?

With the caravan starting to pick itself up and lick it's wounds, the twins quickly made sure their prisoners were secure and looked after. Then while Ta made his way towards the apparent targets of the attack, Oma smiled politely at the caitsith.

"That was some interesting magic you displayed there Miss, if you don't mind me saying so." His attempts at conversation were more than a little sheepish. Whether that was out of formality or anxiety was difficult to say. "We've never quite seen anything like it. Where does one pick up such impressive talents?"

Ta sighed to himself as he overheard his brother's attempts at small talk, and focused on more important matters. Approaching with authority he walked straight up to the man that appeared to be calling the shots for the strange wagon. "Sorry for shooting your wagon." He started with the same polite matter his brother maintained, if a bit urgent in his efforts to get to the point. "Figured you'd prefer your goods slightly damaged to completely gone." He looked again at the coffin. "Just what is it you're transporting anyway?" He asked, and gave a little grin as he thumbed at the badge on his shirt. "Nothing illegal I hope?"
