DESCRIPTION
The Dodonna-class armed transport - named for General Jan Dodonna of the old Rebel Alliance - is a common refit of the old GR-75 medium transport, first seen in service to the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. Developed to give the lightly armed GR-75 better defensive and offensive capability, the Dodonna refit dramatically increased the GR-75's armament without sacrificing an unacceptable portion of the type's hauling capacity, and was designed to be performed at even the most primitive Alliance shipyards capable of handling ships of that size. Dodonna-class transports became an important part of the Rebellion's logistical network, and served in various theaters throughout the conflict.

Dodonna-class armed transports are very close to the GR-75 upon which they are based. The type can carry 16,000 tons of cargo, only 3,000 less than its unmodified counterpart, with the same "open hull" cargo bay allowing it to carry bulky semi-external loads. Modifications begin with the engines; the Dodonna is around 5 MGLT faster than the GR-75, owing to the decreased freight capacity and some tweaks to the drive system. The ship is run by a crew of 18, including a multitude of gunners for the new weapons; passenger capacity has been reduced to 50, however. The most dramatic difference is armament, however; whereas the old GR-75 was basically unarmed, the Dodonna is equipped with a pair of dual heavy turbolasers in a barbette mount on the starboard ventral hull, plus a dual medium turbolaser turret in a central ventral mount. There are also a pair of defense quad laser turrets for fending off starfighters and other small craft, plus a 52-tube concussion missile launchers on the ventral hull.

Dodonna-class armed transports served with distinction through the Galactic Civil War, although their improvised nature meant they were quickly taken out of service by the New Republic. Unfortunately for the New Republic, the design stuck around; the GR-75 was not an uncommon vessel in civilian circles, and when pirates and other outlaws got hold of them, many found it quite easy to dust off the old Dodonna-class refit scheme for their own purposes. In the present day, the refit has become quite popular with pirates, mercenaries and paramilitary groups with shoestring budgets.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Dodonna-class armed transports are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create an armed vessel which would be commonly used by pirates and other small armed groups.

RESTRICTIONS
Dodonna-class armed transports are capital ships with heavy weapons, and thus cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They may be acquired as faction assets, however, or by a group of at least 3 individual characters who work together regularly.
