Cairo had dozed off during a lengthy Imperial Intelligence briefing about rebel factions and tension upon Denon. The planet had largely recovered from the New Republic's attacks some time ago, and the Empire had reconsolidated the world as a core member of its new order. The Sith would not let the world be struck again so easily; now, the world maintained a heavier security presence, composed of different public and secret elements. Publicly, Sith troopers worked in tandem with civilian police to maintain the police. Behind closed doors, Imperial intelligence assets monitored known and potential sites of rebel activity, hoping to subvert the rebels before their activity could ever be made public.

It was for that reason that Acolytes Malou D'Amaris and Cairo Kisufi were selected to come to the world. As Force-wielders, their potency in the Force could assist with clandestine missions and reveal information that was otherwise inaccessible. As Sith, bringing them on-world demonstrated the patronage Imperial military assets still offered the Sith; even the younger members of the Order were viewed as qualified enough for sensitive missions. And, as teenagers, their age made them able to infiltrate wider targets without suspicion. Fewer would expect a child to secretly be a member of military intelligence.

Inspector Gorne Mofong, a stern, older Iktotchi, called to the pair of acolytes to stay in the room as the uniformed officers cleared out. Cairo took a moment to assess his would-be companion; they had never met before, and he hadn't noticed the precise moment when she entered the room. He knew next to nothing of her, only vaguely knowing that she was the apprentice of one of the more important Lords of the Sith. He wondered if she was powerful, distant, cruel. like the Sith he had met. It sometimes seemed like it was all they aspired to.

Kisufi wore a crisp, yet casual, outfit: A black turtleneck paired with black, tapered sweatpants. He jogged down the stairs of the lecture room towards the inspector's desk as she spoke to the group.

"Acolyte, Champion," a respectful nod, despite the disrespect Cairo had just displayed. Being a Sith sometimes had its perks. "Thank you for joining us here. I assume you heard the briefing, but I'll summarize again for you." Her cold eyes shot to Cairo, momentarily, before returning to a neutral stare at her data pad. "You are to infiltrate Denon Charter Academy and join this world's burgeoning student activist movement. Report back anything you hear to me, directly, and subvert the group's mission, if possible." Denon Charter Academy was one of the world's largest public primary schools, well-connected to the rest of the capital city by public transit. It was also relatively prestigious, as families from all over the world applied to have their students accepted. Students often expressed discontent with faculty, public policy, and whatever they viewed as the top 'issue of the day'. The Sith needed to both maintain the image of a new political order where citizens had a voice while undermining discontent from the population; they could not march their troops into the schools and shoot the students dead, at any rate. If Malou and Cairo could expose the student movement's leadership or otherwise destroy it, there would be no need for such circumstances.

"Any questions?"

'Denon.' It was closer to the Core than any other Sith-held planet. Malou had never been to the planet either. Considering she spent most of her time in the northwestern reaches of the galaxy, it wasn't actually that big of a surprise that she hadn't. She was here to help with some sort of infiltration, so the fact that she had never been to Denon before was a plus in this situation.

Malou was quiet for the entirety of the briefing. There wasn't any way to know if she was even listening either because the blindfold secured around her head hid her eyes and expression from view. She was actually listening, but only partially because she was checking out the acolyte in the room. Malou had never met Cairo, so she wasn't sure what to make of him. He was about her height, about her age, and seemed fairly casual. 'As long as he's not some stuck-up annoying-type, should be fine,' was her final verdict.

"Are you providing us with identities?" Malou would imagine that two new kids showing up with nothing to say about themselves might be a bit suspicious. Hopefully, Mofong would provide them with some sort of false backstory for them to go off.

Malou had come in an expensive brown ensemble, so if Mofong had nothing, Malou would probably play up the rich transfer student shit. Shouldn't be too hard.

Malou's mention of identities prompted the Inspector Mofong to hand the pair school IDs and keycards to two rooms in an extended-stay corporate housing building near the city's spaceport. "Yes, my lady." A practiced formality for greeting the Sith. The Sith could be so unpredictable, it had become custom for her to defer to absolute, unquestioning respect. "You two are Cameron and Melody Vesperian, cousins." It would explain sharing a domicile, at least. "You're from Taris, freshly moved to the city to study. Wealthy enough that your family can afford lodging for you off-world, but not ludicrously so. Spend your stipends wisely. The school has begun to accept applications from across the Empire, this semester. Outside of that..." It was a role meant to be light enough that the duo wouldn't be stuck in the details of it. "The choice is yours. Just, report back weekly. And, perhaps this goes without saying: do not reveal any connection to Imperial intelligence. Thank you both for your service to the Empire." Her head tilted towards Malou. "Lady D'Amaris, your family is of some stature on Serenno, and your own service to the Empire has grown your legend. It's unlikely that you would be recognized from your face alone, but do take care." If there were no further questions, she would turn and march out of the lecture room towards her office.

Cairo turned to Malou, now in the empty room. So many of the other Acolytes he had met were...strange creatures. Vanity-obsessed psychopaths who descended from actual nobility, people who saw suffering as a fun game or a means to improve. While training had desensitized Cairo to an extent, he still felt uneasy around his fellow Sith, so prone as the Order was to backstabbing, treachery, and ludicrous amounts of random violence. He hoped this would be a different kind of Sith. One who could at least relax a little, without needing to invade a planet to get their jollies.

"Hey." He flashed a toothy grin, extending a hand to shake. "I'm Cairo. I don't think we've actually met before." He produced a small, round brush from his pocket, quickly pressing the bristles to his curly blonde hair. "You know, the schools are out for another few days for the end-of-Winter festival." While the weather was still brisk enough outside to warrant warm clothing, Denon was moving to warmer days. A local, week-long holiday celebrated that, with good food, performance, and live music. "I was thinking about checking out some street food or something after we got settled in." His 'research' prior to this mission was reading listicles about the most fun things to do on Denon. While Sith occupation presented some challenges to tradition, the rule of the Empress proved fairer to existing traditions on worlds that previous Sith Empires had. "But, uh, I haven't done an official Imperial Intelligence mission like this before, so I can follow your lead?"
His voice turned upwards at the end of his sentence, illustrating his confusion. At this point, Malou likely knew enough about the workings of the Empire to realize that this was a milk-run; an easy mission that Imperial Intelligence had fabricated to strengthen relations between the non-Force Sensitive Operatives and their Sith handlers. It would help demonstrate that Sith could play nice with civilian equals, while not ever actually putting the two at risk.

If the pair got along, it would barely feel like work. So, Cairo put on his most pleasant, agreeable attitude to start. "You ever been to Denon before?"

So they were getting assigned identities. Mofong seemed a bit concerned that her noble birth would be a hindrance, but Malou did not feel the same. When she had lived with her father on Serenno, she had gone without her blindfold. Those who knew the D'Amaris family might recognize her without it, but she had seldom been in the public eye. She wasn't worried about being recognized as Sith either. Perhaps she was too comfortable, or perhaps she just didn't see the need to worry.

'Melody Vesperian, cousin to him.' Cairo, that was. The two had still yet to speak, but as soon as the room emptied to just them, he changed that.

"Malou," was her reply to his initial introduction. She reached out with her own hand and shook it, then let it fall back to her side. As he began to talk of schools and festivals, she listened while she observed the room in greater detail.

"Yeah, sounds good to me. Both questions." Food sounded just fine and she didn't mind if he wanted to follow her lead. She wasn't expecting things to be so difficult as to require a lead to even be followed, though. The Miralukan then moved for the first time since entering the room, leaning back to stretch her hands high above her head. "But uh, no. I've never been to Denon before. It's way out of the way of where I usually am." Having said that, it was just far out from any Sith space at all.

Taking that as an opportunity to leave, Malou would turn and head for the door. She would pause to make sure Cairo was following then continue toward the exit.

"So, you're an acolyte right? Do you have a master?" After the whole incident with Senin, Malou was a bit wary of anyone who was or could be associated with either of the two. At this point, the only other person her age she trusted was Ashla, but the two weren't that close.

His master? He thought to Charlotte - given that they were expected to be clandestine on Hapes, he wondered if it would be wise to spill her name and information to whoever asked. But, he also didn't want to seem like a dickhead. It was a difficult balance to strike. "Oh, yeah. Her name's Charlotte. Have you met her?" Not that difficult, admittedly.

"I came here once as a kid, with my mom." They were chased off-world by the authorities, forced to beat a hasty retreat to another Outer Rim world. It wasn't the fondest memory. "It's funny. The only thing I remember is they had this type of cheese that would melt, and people would put sticks with meat into it to eat it. Think it's called...fondue?" Maybe he could get some more while he was on the planet.

"But, what about you? You're a Champion, huh? And you're, what, 16 or 17 too? That's dope." He envied the power that the higher ranking Sith held. The power to shoot lightning out of your fingertips really well was cool, of course, but he desired more the social capital and freedom the Champions were allowed. Free to make their own decisions, their own mistakes, grow their won businesses. It seemed...dope. "Do you still have a master, or anything? I'm kind-of new to the whole 'Sith' thing, so not really sure how that works." He raised his fingers into air quotes for 'Sith,' still feeling a distance from the Empire he was inducted into.

"I'm ready to get going whenever you are, by the way. When I landed, Imperial security said they were going to handle my bags." He travelled light, anyways, so he wasn't really worried about them. "We could start getting into character by checking out the city?" He gestured out the window to the bustle of the festival across the cityscape.

"You wanna lead the way, cuzzo?"

"The name sounds...familiar." It was entirely possible Malou had seen, met, or even spoken to Charlotte before and had forgotten about her. She'd met a lot of people; faces could run together if they weren't particularly important to her.

Malou's face remained pleasantly neutral until Cairo mentioned his mother. Her lips tightened just the slightest before relaxing a moment later when he inquired about her rank.

"Uh, yeah. I'm seventeen." From what Malou was aware, seventeen was on the younger side of the age range typical for acolytes to become champions. Her training had lasted only about two years, but she was lucky to have trained under a formidable Sith. Malou was proud of how quickly she felt she had advanced compared to some of the others she knew of. Hearing Cairo sound impressed breathed a bit more air into her ego balloon, but the Miralukan just responded with a smile and the answer to his next question.

"My master was--well, is--Lord Caelestis." Though she was no longer an acolyte, there was a certain part of her that felt she would always view the man as her master. "He's leagues above me; there's still a lot I could learn from him, even as a Champion."

"Sure thing, cuz."

Cuz. It felt odd to use that word so casually. All of her cousins, excluding Manon of course, were just as formal and stuck up as the rest of her family. Not to exclude herself from behaviors she'd learned from her family, but the language she used now was growing more and more casual the longest she spent time away from Serenno.

Not that she was complaining. It was difficult to grow close with people using language made to hold people at a distance. There were intricacies to formalities, but that wasn't lost in more casual language. It was just different but in a better way.

'So much thought on one word, damn Malou.'

"You know, I don't think I've ever been to a festival before," Malou would comment after the two had made their way some distance into the city. He couldn't see, but the girl was taking in the sights around her like someone starved for water. Her vision allowed her to see ahead to the festival, though she opted to just map a path to the activities with it. No need to spoil the surprise quite yet.

As the pair made their way out the building, the sunny day began to give way to a brilliant dusk. The sky was a dazzling array of purples as red clouds carried the last light of day away towards the horizon. All around them, traffic at the lower levels of the city had been halted - the festival was a strictly pedestrian event. The streetlights' electronic shine was dimmed, as well, with massive torches and hanging, colorful lanterns replacing the neon glow of the cityscape. It was a wondrous display of light, matched only by the sound and sights of the festival itself.

Performers danced through the crowded streets as merchants, gamesmen, and restaurants alike hawked their wares from tiny booths placed all throughout the streets. In the distance, fireworks chimed periodically, capturing the . It was the kind of crowd Cairo had grown up working. Easily-distracted pedestrians with a little extra money to spend. They were all easy targets.

But, he didn't want to cause any unnecessary drama. His mom would've, for sure; but Cairo prided himself on being quite different than her. As he tried to avoid his urge to steal, he saw out of the corner of his eye a candy-striped booth offering a strange exchange: Cotton Candy for an arm wrestle. A carnival barker hollered and harassed the crowd into challenging his muscular companion, a grown Orcoloan with a mechanical left arm, to accept the challenge.

It was such a stupidly bad deal that few people ever approached the booth. A few older boys, with the cocky machismo those words implied, were soundly defeated. But Cairo knew he had an ace up his sleeve, unlike those morons. With a swaggering step, he gestured for Malou to follow behind him, weaving through the crowd towards the box.

"Two cotton candies - there's no way in hell you can take on my cousin." He pointed at Malou, with a devilish grin growing on his face. "Ain't that right, Melody?"

Malou regretted not having ever been to a festival before. Though she couldn't see the colorful attire and decor, she could easily imagine the array of colors adorning the streets. They were already beginning to light the streets, so the girl figured activities would start to ramp up. 'That's how it works right? Things get busier after dark?'

The woman was interrupted from her thoughts by a sudden gesture by "Cameron." Without missing a beat, Malou turned to follow through the thickening crowds. She quickly spotted the two men they were headed to, right after she heard the man yell out his challenge for the first time. 'What is he planning?' She would find out soon enough.

'You've got to be kidding me.' Malou's mind's eye settled on the flexing Orcolan who had set his sights upon her by now. The Miralukan was in great shape, but she wasn't even half the size of the Orc. One of the disadvantages of being blindfolded all the time was not being able to shoot Cairo a look.

She'd never had "cotton candy" before though, so she'd play along.

"Absolutely right." A smirk widened her lips as she made a show of rolling of her sleeves one by one. She didn't need eyes to read the amused expression on either of the men's faces. No amount of muscle definiton on her part would intimidate the Orcolan, but she wasn't too worried about him either. Unless Cairo thought she really could arm-wrestle the Orc, he definitely had something up his sleeve.

"Alright young lady. Take a seat." He gestured to the little setup of a table and two chairs. Malou slid into the seat at his prompting, then placed her elbow firmly on the table. The Orcolan took the other seat and copied her form. When their hands clasped together, hers all but disappeared in his.

"Three... two... one..."

'You better not let me embarass myself, Cairo.'

A good con relied on a distraction from the main event. The barker and the Orc had their distraction - creating enough showmanship around the arm wrestling that they could draw a crowd. That crowd could then be worked - an unseen third and fourth member of their group could pick pockets, run hustles, gamble on different outcomes. Already, Cairo saw two Rodians with a knowing look take positions at the back of the forming crowd. The barker and the Orc shared a glance. It was too obvious, too easy, for a trained conman to notice.

However, Cairo had a con of his own brewing. The sugar for the cotton candy machine was placed precariously above the rotating spinner that produced it. If the machine was overfed with sugar, its spinner would overproduce. Add a little bit of lightning to the equation, and the overcharge could create a funny scene. Malou was the distraction - but hopefully she was watching him enough to catch wind of his nods towards the cotton candy machine.

"Alright young lady. Take a seat."

The distraction started. With a wave of his hand, Cairo tipped the colorful sugar boxes over, their contents spilling out into the machines. Step one.

Cairo pulled out his data phone, pretending to take a video with it to cover his next movement. He activated the flash on it at the same time he sent the tiniest jolt of lighting to the power cell of the machine, aiming to overcharge the machine. Step two.

He needed Malou's help for the third step. The spinners needed to spin even more. That could be achieved manually, if they used the Force to crank it up just a little. He tried to subtly hint to Malou what he was doing.

"You can do it, Cousin. Just...push on his weak point." His eyes darted to the cotton candy machine and back to Malou, already starting to smoke as it spun faster and faster. Just needed one more little push.

Though Malou was physically facing the Orcolan, the nature of her vision meant she was constantly aware of her surroundings in a 360° field of view. Her attention was sensitive to movement, so when Cairo tilted his chin toward the machine, Malou did indeed notice. As she sat herself down, she took notice of the sugar pouring into the cotton candy machine and the smallest pulse in the Force coming from Cairo.

'Push on his weak point?' The Force strengthened Malou's arm as she began to fight against her Orcolan opponent. She followed the direction of Cairo's gaze back to the machine, where a bit of smoke was hovering around the heating metal. 'Oh.' She got it now; they were the distraction. Malou was even less sure what Cairo was up to now, but she would find out soon enough. The girl dropped her free hand from the table and quickly rotated her curled hand, causing the machine to accelerate even more. Just as the Orcolan began to slowly muscle her arm down against the table, a loud boom! filled the air as fluffy candy began to spray everywhere. Both the barker and his Orc looked up in surprise, and Malou took the opportunity to channel the Force back into her arm and flip the script on her opponent.

"A-ha!" Malou stood up abruptly with a shit-eating grin, her hand pinning the Orc's down. She immediately ducked to avoid a stream of pink candy aimed at her head, though. The last thing she wanted in her hair was a bunch of fluffy, sticky, sugary candy.

Malou turned her attention quickly back to Cairo to see what he was doing.

The plan had gone off without a hitch. It was brilliant, terribly brilliant, and the Cheshire grin that sat upon Cairo's face grew at the sight of a plan well-hatched.

This plan was also a distraction. In the ensuing chaos of the cotton candy machine firing at its maximum performance, the crowd was sprayed by the cotton candy. In their scramble to avoid the pink, gooey substance, not only had Malou been able to win the arm wrestling, Cairo was able to do a little pickpocketing of his own. He purposely 'slipped' into one of the fleeing Rodians, using his naturally light touch and a little help from the Force to pilfer a couple of Imperial crowns from his wallet.

By the time the pair were walking away, they would have two giant cones of pink, fluffy cotton candy and a little extra spending money for the rest of the night. "Good shit out there, cuz!" He flipped a valuable coin towards Malou, part of her cut for her support of this little operation. He took a huge bite of the cotton candy.

"This is dope, ain't it?" He looked out to the night before him: The crowd, the performances, the lights, the sounds. He still didn't quite understand the intricacies of how Malou's sight worked, but he imagined she could at least see how cool this whole thing is. "There aren't a lot of acolytes who are down to like...kick it, you know? Just take it easy a little bit." He smiled towards her. "I'm glad you're cool." And he was. He imagined if he had been paired with the run-of-the-mill champion - what would they even do? Most Sith just seemed to scheme, meditate, and kill. There wasn't actually a time to cut loose. Even their social events were marred by that.

But she seemed dope.
"Have you had cotton candy before? They're kind of a staple of these stupid fairs." Stupid was a positive, for once. These were the kinds of street carnivals where him and his mother had cut his teeth - sideshow acts were more home to him than any house he had ever lived in. "But it's good as fuck. I've messed around with enough of these machines to know - these models are fun as fuck to play around with."

Malou was glad that she had been able to do well in distracting the barker and the Orc for Cairo, because going into it, she'd no idea what he'd been planning. 'I suppose it was a good exercise in thinking quickly?' Malou wasn't a fan of uncertainty, but things had turned out well.

Malou caught the coin as it flipped through the air with a little bit of tugging through the Force, then slipped it right into the pocket of her pants. Though he regarded her in a friendly manner, a bit of Malou felt surprised when he complimented her performance. "I'm glad you're cool." How- how was she to respond to that? Did she respond with a "thank you"? Did she compliment him back?

"Yeah, I suppose I know what you mean," Malou began with a small chuckle as she thought to the other acolytes she'd met before. "You're pretty cool too, cuz." She could've gotten stuck on this mission with about any other acolyte or champion and ended up spending the entire time exchanging lackluster small talk. The Serenno native was glad Cairo was down to "kick it." It made it a lot easier for her to relax too.

But had she ever tried cotton candy before? Malou looked at the cloud-on-a-cone before it with a mixture of interest and suspicion. It looked like it was going to be incredibly sweet. She liked sweet things, but a lot of the commoner candy she'd tried before was way too sweet. Who wanted to eat something so overpowering?

"I haven't, actually." The Miralukan took a bite of the pink cloud and felt as it instantly began to melt in her mouth. It was very sweet, but the fluffiness of it didn't make the sweetness unbearable. "It is good as fuck," she remarked after a moment. 'I wonder if I can buy one of those machines myself?'

"Do you go to these fairs a lot?" Malou hadn't gotten to do much of anything like this as a kid. If he had, she would be envious of him. What would she have grown to be like if she hadn't spent so many years under her father's watchful eye? There were so many "what ifs" she could ask herself.

Her sight looked out about the crowds, taking in the view as she and Cairo walked and talked. There were all sorts of things to look at. Food stalls, competitions, games... "They have games at these things, right? We should try playing some!" The words came out a bit more enthusiastic than Malou would've liked, so she tried to mend her embarrassment by quickly moving on. Her hand reached out and caught Cairo's wrist to pull him along with her towards the nearest stall. Its setup was pretty simple; it consisted of a table covered in little cylinders marked with various colors. They approached as a couple left, and the woman manning the stall began to pick up rings from the ground.

She spotted Malou and Cairo quickly and threw on a big smile. "Five for five rings!" she announced to them happily. "If you can toss the ring onto one of these here colored spikes, you can pick'a plush of yer choosin'." Malou procured ten credits from her pocket and handed them over. The woman handed her ten rings, and Malou handed five of them over to Cairo.

"I bet you a Crown you can't toss it onto the middle spike without help." By help, of course, she meant the Force. It would be easy to cheese the game using it.

Cairo's feeling of joy grew as he felt Malou relax into the festival. It had taken a second, but by this point, the pair of Sith teens was opening up to one another. Cairo laughed as she enjoyed her first bite of cotton candy. Her enthusiasm encouraged him to take another bite himself, letting the pink, sweet substance fill his mouth once more. He appreciated it anew through her enjoyment, sending back warm memories to his first taste of cotton candy.

"Right? Who invented this, it's so good." Fluffiness and sugary perfection. He paused to think at her question. You know what? Might as well be honest. "Yeah, I have. I grew up around a lot of these. Used to be one of these street performer types, and these sorts of fairs were classic." Trouncing around with his Mother, a wannabe-Sith prophetess, he had seen his fair share of sideshows. It was a surprisingly territorial life. Locals would intimidate the off world con artists, driving those roadsters to be all the more inventive, conniving, and quick-witted. "This is my first time in a while, though." First time since he joined the Sith. It was bringing back memories, pleasant and unpleasant. He tried to distract himself by returning to the present, where Malou was tugging him to a game.

"Yeah, they've got games. Bet I'll crush ya, though." His grin returned as he spoke. He stepped forward to the ring toss, confident about his to perform. What he failed to realize, though, is how difficult this would be without use of the Force. Manipulating games of chance was his first connection to the Force, what helped him realize he had an active ability in it. He could barely feel where his hand ended and the ring began, owing to his unconscious manipulation of the Force's energy.

So, he whiffed it. All five of his rings, nowhere. He chuckled nervously, for himself and for Malou, before his next words.
"Woof. Maybe I'm a little rusty." He purchased another five, and his following performance was even worse. A rising heat, a feeling of shame, shot to his face. He purchased another five.

Four had already missed from this hand. His face continued to redden, as a combination of embarrassment and rage filled over him. He spun around and threw the last ring through the open air, including a rage-filled blast of the force from his palm. The ring went sailing, curving high through the sky until it broke through a window in one of Denon's skyscrapers.

Cairo's rage-filled blast propelled him backwards, knocking through and smashing the wooden countertop to the stand. The crowd around the tent turned to look at the source of the damage, with a mix of anger, bemusement, and fear.

"Fuck this game..." He groaned, taking another bite of his cotton candy. He glanced, woefully, over to Malou.

"You'll have to tell me more about that later! C'mon!" She was definitely interested in hearing about the sort of street performing he did, but by the time the topic had been exchanged they had reached the ring toss stall.

Malou watched Cairo go through the set of rings she'd purchased and miss every last one of them. There was a smug upturn to her lips, though it disappeared when he bought five more. 'He'll make it this time,' Malou assured herself. Then he missed them all again. He bought more, and missed the last of those five rings in a spectacular toss that led to the faint sound of glass breaking somewhere. Her smile faded as she wondered how difficult the ring toss could actually be.

"Oh...my..." The lady running the stand had quite the look of surprise on her face as she assessed the damage. "I- That was certainly a try. Um, go right ahead young lady." She didn't seem like she knew what to do with the situation, so she gestured for Malou to take her turn.

If the lady felt any assurance that Malou would miss the pegs because of her blindfold, she would be sadly mistaken. Malou missed every peg by about a mile, but it wasn't because she was blind. Like Cairo, every flick of her wrist sent the rings off to the side in every direction. One of the rings would've knocked right off the side of the stall woman's head if she would not have ducked.

"Just a warm-up!" she declared as she purchased five more rings. The champion purposefully avoided looking at Cairo's expression so she wouldn't have to see the smug smile she assumed would be there. Though her next set of tosses came closer, it was not by much. The heat of frustration warmed her cheeks as she purchased 'Just one more' set of rings to toss. Again, closer, but not quite. A singular ring made it onto a spike on the very edge, but the spike gave her nothing in terms of prizes. Like Cairo, it seemed she was just absolute shit at tossing rings.

"Maybe ask one of them kids to throw for ya. They've figured out how to toss a ring and make it in the general vicinity." There was a teasing, almost taunting edge to the woman's tone that Malou did not appreciate. If nothing but for the sake of not blowing their cover or causing a scene in public, she simply gave the woman a tight-lipped smile.

"Fuck this game indeed," Malou mumbled under her breath as she made her way over to the acolyte. Her face was a bit warm, both from frustration and embarrassment. "Screw her, too. I should've tossed it at her on purpose." The idea of her getting smacked by the ring lightened her mood a bit. "Which of these games are you good at? You've been to these things before, right?"

They were surrounded by a multitude of different stalls and set-ups. Surely there was one he could ace.

Cairo said nothing to her question. No, instead, it was his turn to pull her somewhere. He peeked at the skyline, quickly, and grabbed her wrist as he ran away from the booth he had nearly destroyed. There was the classic experience of the festival that the pair still needed to see.

"Close your eyes!" He said, briefly forgetting the nature of Malou's sight. "Or, uh, whatever your equivalent of that is!" They ran through crowded streets, as Cairo kept one hand out in front of him, gently tugging, pushing past, or weaving through the crowds that gathered along the streets. It was a downhill jog, and the pair slowly began to approach the docks of the city. Malou wouldn't need her sight to notice this - the calling of seabirds and salty scent of ocean air would hit hear ears and nostrils, respectively. She would soon feel the wooden planks of the dock crunch beneath her feet, hear the call of the waves, feel the chills of the breeze. Cairo came to a stop at this point.

"Okay, you can look again."

With Malou's sight restored, she would be able to see what Cairo's big surprise was: A giant sign. It read 'Silver Bullet: Into The Depths.' Cairo grinned - flashing a pair of ticket stubs in his hand. "Got these when we were at the cotton candy stand."

Then the screams started. Distant, high above the pair, groups of people howled and screamed with a combination of fear and joy. He then gestured to what was behind the sign. Jutting from the pier, climbing into the sky, and diving deep into the ocean beside them was a...rollercoaster. A big one. "QuickPass tix. We can skip the line!"

He hadn't yet let go of her wrist. And now, he began to gently pull her towards the front of the long, long line, cheekily flashing his two tickets in the face of all the frustrated passengers they would skip. Pre-boarding went on without a hitch. Holograms and hastily-painted art set the story for the coaster, about how each train of the 'Silver Bullet' was full of researchers, who would descend deep beneath Denon's waters to see what lurked beneath. It was cheesy, with poorly-acted scenes describing the horror of the ocean depths. Designed to scare kids.

As they boarded, though, the pair would feel a ripple of fear pass through them. A wave of darkness, passing through their bodies, as the Silver Bullet train car began to move through the shadowy corridor, creeping to the top of the ride.

At the top, Cairo felt it again. Was it nervousness? It couldn't be - he had been on countless numbers of these stupid rides. And, more importantly, he had done more exhilarating activities during his time as a Sith. So what was the feeling

'Close my eyes?' It took Malou a second to figure out what to do as he pulled her along, but after a few anxiety-inducing seconds of debate, she chose to open them. The world around her disappeared, and the 360° view of everything became nothing but darkness as her lashes pushed up against the silk blindfold against her face. Uncertainty filled her body as she became acutely aware that she could no longer see the world around it. Malou didn't open her eyes. Even when she showered, dressed, or did anything in which she removed the blindfold she kept her eyes closed. The blackness and lack of awareness she felt as Cairo pulled her along was something she knew only in unconsciousness. It reminded her of that cave and the crushing pressure which brought her down to her knees on that creepy planet years ago. Malou's movements became noticeably stiffer, which was a stark contrast to the graceful way the Serennian usually moved about. It took every fiber in her body to trust the Morellian. She felt blind.

When the smell of saltwater and the cry of seagulls hit her senses, some feeling of relief washed over her. All she'd been able to focus on was the warmth of his hand and the chaotic sound of the fair going on around them. The moment he said she could look again, her eyes squeezed shut faster than a ship jumping to hyperspace.

"Silver Bullet?" Her sight jumped from the tickets he flashed in front of her to the cars of people screaming as the ride passed the point of no return and plunged into the ocean. There was very little of her that wanted to get on that thing, but before she could protest Cairo began to pull her along towards the line.

'It'll be fine,' Malou assured herself in an attempt to calm her nerves. 'I'm sure this thing is very safe.' Once the attendant got her and Cairo secured into their seats, she felt a bit of reassurance from the weight of the safety bar pressing down on her thighs. "These things are safe, right?" chuckled Malou as she curled her fingers tightly around the bar. "I've never been on this sort of thing, I mean," she rushed to add. Warmth rushed to her cheeks and the cool sensation of the blindfold against her skin became more apparent. She definitely didn't want to sound, look, or seem like this sort of thing scared her around him. Around anyone, actually. Slowly, the Serennian unclenched her fingers and forced herself to let them rest naturally on the metal.

Before she could say anything else, their ride dropped. The speed at which they descended down into the metal tunnel pushed her back firmly against the seat and had her gripping the safety bar once more. Joyous screams manifested in the air all around them, but she was dead silent until the tracks leveled out underneath the waves.

The ocean was in full view. A sort of glass or thick plastic held back the water and allowed the riders to see the variety of statues and animatronics that were positioned around the ride. Schools of curious fish intermingled in between the artificial animals, and Malou spotted at least one pair of crabs duking it out on the fin of some ancient sea creature replica. "Look!" Malou placed a hand on Cairo's shoulder with one hand and pointed with the other towards the fighting crustaceans. Before long, the ride lurched forward and began to gain in speed, leaving the two sea creatures behind.

The coaster reached another hill, and this time Malou decided to yell with the rest of the car. Since the tunnel, her expression had changed to a big grin. Now that she'd let herself relax a bit, she was enjoying the ride!

When the ride was over and they were able to exit the coaster though, she was more than happy to have two feet on solid ground. "That was super fun! I've never been on any sort of ride before!" The Miralukan took a moment to extend her Sight out so she could look for any similar rides in the vicinity. There were a couple of smaller ones back at the fair, but none close enough nearby. The crowds were noticeably thinner too. 'I wonder what time it is?'

Malou pulled out her datapad. If Cairo cared to look and look closely, he would notice that everything on the screen was made 3d with a holographic mimic. It was the tiniest holograph, but it was just enough to allow Malou to read the text and image descriptors she otherwise couldn't. "It's almost dinner. Do you want to grab something to eat and then figure out where we're supposed to be staying?" Her Sight jumped around the nearby area, searching for someplace small and quick. "I do still want to hear about the street performing you did, too." It sounded really interesting. Plus, she liked it when the other person did most of the talking.

Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit! Cairo threw his hands in the air, screaming with fear and glee as the rollercoaster rocketed down into the ocean beneath. The sea sprayed him as they dove down, covering his face in saltwater and a dangling strand of seaweed. He flicked it off of him, only looking when Malou prompted him to. He looked first at her hand on his shoulder and smiled. He followed her other hand towards the display - crabs fighting crabs - and laughed. Stupid crabs.

He gripped the cart as it continued to hurtle through the deep ocean track. Even it was dark, it was fun. He occasionally glanced over to his companion, looking to her smile, her elegant attitude, her carefree cheers. She was dope. He looked back to the ride just as they hit another deep dive that flipped back up and inverted the passengers. Quality craftsmanship.

When the emerged, the brilliant shades of sundown radiated on the pair of Sith. Cairo looked towards the sea, watching the seagulls play in the wind and waves. He wondered how Malou saw, if she could enjoy the marvel of the sunset by the sea with him. He'd have to ask her, some time.

Right now, though, he was hungry as hell. His mind shot to the first thing he had eaten, when he had visited these same streets so many years ago. "Fondue?"

The pair would wander around the seaside until Cairo felt like they had just the right spot. That took them on a bit of a hike, it turned out, as Cairo started asking strangers on the street about the best fondue in the city. All the locals had a different favorite, of course, but there was a restaurant showing up in multiple conversations with multiple species of citizen. A family-owned seafood restaurant, nestled halfway up a cliff that looked overlooked the crashing sea. It would be perfect.

As they walked, the sky turned from sunset to darkness. The days were not yet long, being the celebration of the beginning of Spring. Cairo lit the way with a paper lantern he had stolen. "Hey, Malou, can I ask..." Nah, still wasn't the right time. "About yourself? What do you usually do when you're not working with Imperial Intelligence?"

As he listened, they would slowly make their way to the restaurant. Inside, two Sullustans swept the floors of a quiet, empty restaurant. One, an older man with a graying mustache, hurried from his seat and beckoned the two to a table. Music played lightly over old speakers. From the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Cairo could see the lights of the street, the rush of the waves, the gentle passing of the clouds above.

And yet, he seemed most interested in the person across from him.

"You asked about my street performing, earlier?"

"Fondue sounds good!" It took them a bit of wandering around before they found a place that Cairo was sure would be good. In between that time, while Cairo stopped to ask multiple locals which restaurants they would recommend, Malou took note of the different sorts of buildings they walked by. Though they had begun their search for a bite to eat in a pretty touristy, attraction-filled area ripe with gift shops, niche museums, and cafés, they were slowly making their way away from that. She began to notice bookstores, corner shops, family-owned restaurants, and groceries replacing the type of buildings from before. Without a word, Malou noted the location of a few stores that stood out to her. If she had any free time to visit them, she would.

It was only after Cairo broke the silence with an inquiry about her work that Malou spoke. "When I'm not working with Imperial Intelligence?" she repeated with a hint of amusement in her voice. It was followed by a hum of thought, then her answer. "I don't usually do much with Imperial Intelligence," she began with a lowered voice. There was no one around them by this point, but it didn't hurt to be careful. "I haven't done much since becoming a champion but as an acolyte, I mostly worked within Avillion alongside my master. I imagine I'll continue to do so." Her voice dropped in volume even further, coming out as a whisper with her next words. "I can't stand the Imperial officers," she admitted with the ghost of a laugh in her tone. "Caelestis let me lead an invasion of Rago with Star Destroyers at my command and Imperial "Intelligence" won't even tell me what all I'm doing half the time." Her fingers formed air quotations on the word intelligence and she shook her head as she did so. If she knew anything for certain, it was that the intelligence officers didn't trust half the Sith they worked with. She didn't blame them, but it still irked her when she became a victim of their attitude.

As they entered the restaurant, Malou finished her answer and settled down into her seat in the quiet, cliffside restaurant. Cairo piped up to see if she still wanted to know about his street performing. To that, she gave him an enthusiastic nod. "They don't really have street performers on Serenno, so yes. I would like to know," she affirmed with a smile just as a waiter appeared to take their drink orders. Feeling in the mood for something sweet, Malou ordered whatever the Star Wars equivalent of a Shirley Temple was. Once the waiter had both their orders, he disappeared off to fetch their drinks and Malou turned her attention back to Cairo.

Cairo ordered a Spacey Temple for himself as they sat together. Maybe the space equivalent of an Arnold Palmer, or a sparkling water, would be more appropriate for a growing boy. He thought back to his time as a street performer. The memories flowed easily - against his will. Still, the pleasant ones jumped to the front of his mind.

"It started on Morellia, I think. Me and my mom." His mother. He thought back to their times together. Memories of standing barefoot in the sandy beach, kicking the ocean waves. Memories of being told his role in whatever hustle she was trying. "We traveled with a group, for a while. Not like...a circus. More like, traveling salesmen. We would show up to street fairs and carnivals and offer herbal remedies, or perform magic, or stuff like that." He kept it vague, for now, as he considered to what extent he would be honest to Malou. So many of the Sith were so avaricious, especially those descended from nobility. How could he trust that she wouldn't use a moment of vulnerability against him?

No, he reasoned. The way of the Jedi is to be devoid of emotion. Sith must embrace their vulnerabilities, their harshest edges, their truest selves. It is where they draw their power. No more running from who he was.
"We, uh, grew up on the road. Pretty poor, you know? Never had a roof over our head, only sometimes had a ship we could travel with. She and I had an act that was pretty...controversial. She would pretend to be a Sith Prophetess, and I would work the crowd. She's reading palms, I'm...finding credit chits, wallets, information." He laughed it off. What would Malou think of him, little more than a petty thief? I guess he had shown it earlier.

"She had a great routine, though. Really convincing. Even had a Jedi once come investigate." It helped that he had started to develop his own powers. The Jedi had offered to train him, but...his mother had declined. He was too valuable, then, for their operation. They fled the world instead. "A Sith Lord, too." The Sith that had dragged him into the Order, and then disappeared to Maker-knows where. He had to convince the Academy to find him a new Sith Lord to train him, where he stumbled upon Charlotte.

"Any good street performance is about misdirection. Even if it's legit. Like, those living statues or people who seem
like they're floating?" He stretched his arms out, adding some jazz fingers in for effect. "All just smoke and mirrors."

The waiter reappeared, fizzy red drinks in hand. Cairo played with the straw, using the force to spin it around inside its large glass, before taking a sip. "You know, it taught me a lot, growing up on the road. Got to see how good some people in the galaxy live, and how bad the rest do. Whether its war, poverty, disease, or organized crime, people all over the galaxy are being squeezed. And their so-called leaders do nothing to help them." He looked back at Malou. She was nobility herself. Maybe she had some deeper understanding of politics that he missed?

"I mean, what do you think? About the galaxy? About..." He checked around the restaurant conspiratorially, worried someone might overhear his would-be seditious thoughts. "the Sith? As a government?"

He didn't want the conversation to get much deeper, as he was still figuring out his own place in the Empire and the world at large. "Also, do you, like, listen to music or anything?" He offered her a small, sheepish smile as he tried to gently engage on a less hot topic.

Morellia. Him and his mom. Travel. Poverty. Lies. Stealing. The Sith. Malou listened to it all quietly, moving only to take periodic sips of her Spacey Temple. Though he had grown up poor, the fact he'd been able to spend so much time with his mother sent a pang of pain down her chest. His childhood sounded so much different than hers. She almost wished hers had been more like his. Almost. Since becoming an acolyte and seeing the world outside her home, Malou was aware that being born into a family like D'Amaris was an incredible privilege. I guess it makes sense that street performers wouldn't be well off. The only difference between the man busking his guitar on the corner and the one broadcasting his music across the galaxy was money, fame, and luck. If the street performer was well off, he would be on stage too.

Or, so she thought. Cairo mentioned the government, or rather, the leaders of the people he saw. She felt his eyes back on her, and at those words, her Sight fell down to the ring on her pinkie finger. Gold, engraved with her family's crest, and worth more than anything Cairo owned—it was the only reminder of her family that she still owned. Her own relationship with nobility was a touchy subject for her. More than anyone else, she hated her father. She didn't like her brother, and she didn't like her grandfather, the Count. The only members of her family she'd ever loved as such were her late mother and her cousin Manon. Outside of them? Outside of Artorgias Wessex, her master? Nobility as she knew it was filled with arrogant, power-hungry wolves pretending to be sheep in fancy dresses with honeyed words and subtle court etiquette. Serenno is a prospering, wealthy planet though, said the voice in the back of her head, and it was right. It didn't change that Malou could probably never trust those born into nobility like she could trust someone who wasn't. Senin. He was a testament to that. But there were nobles that she'd immediately liked. She was so unsure of everything surrounding her family. There was a reason she just avoided them when she could.

When Cairo asked about what she thought about the Sith as a government, Malou almost immediately opened her mouth to speak before quickly clenching her jaw shut. I like how Artorgias runs things, she thought to herself. There was little chance of her expressing her opinions here on such a mission when it was entirely possible Imperial Intelligence was keeping tabs on them. So, instead, she just shook her head. "I have my opinions," she muttered. "We can talk about that some other time." With her head, she gestured subtly to the side. If his eyes followed, he would see their waiter reappear from the kitchen and head straight for them. She hoped he would talk it as her not wanting to talk about such things in public. In reality, she wasn't sure, and she didn't want to talk about something potentially controversial with someone she'd known for less than a full day.

"...and yes, I like music," Malou added with a laugh. "I'm a big fan of guitar, so I like a lot of rock. I think a lot of electronic music is good, too. I wouldn't say I'm picky though." When she said that, she immediately tried to read his facial expressions to see if he approved. Not that it mattered to her or anything. Reading was more of a pastime of hers than listening to music was, but she still liked music. Who didn't? If they liked the same kind of music though...well, it'd be neat. She wanted to know what kind of music he liked though. Maybe she would like it too? "What about you? What do you listen to?" What if he hated rock and electronic music, though? Why did that make her nervous to think about?
