Jungle, Lubang Minor

The undulating blue miasma of hyperspace gave way to elongated stars, which then returned to their normal, twinkling dots in the void as they returned to realspace. The ship’s viewport quickly filled with the massive, viridian sphere of Lubang Minor, some inconsequential planet in the Outer Rim. There was little information about it, and she imagined it wasn’t even populated. Nonetheless, rumors in cantinas and whispers in dark places hinted that there might be a Sith trove here, and, dragging along one of her peers, Ana set off immediately in search of it. There wasn’t much to go off of other than a general four-digit grid location, but it was better than nothing.

The Muse zipped through the void quickly towards the jungle planet before them. For most of the trip, Ana meditated on the Dark Side and the growing corruption within her, though there was time set aside to converse with her fellow cultist about other things. Truthfully, she was glad someone else was willing to go along with her on this expedition; the last time she went to a jungle world, it ended up with two of the muscle-bound buffoons with her running away into the jungle while she and another buffoon fought a zakkeg. She hoped this wouldn’t be the case again.

Turbulence rocked the ship as they breached the planet’s atmosphere, and soon they would be looking for a landing to set the ship down in to begin their search. It seemed like there was a thunderstorm occurring, so the closer they got to the clouds, the stronger the turbulence became. Rain pelted the viewport and lightning streaked out in the distance, but she’d flown in a storm before. Just needed to get to the ground soon.

”We’ll be landing shortly,” she called out to her passenger, ”Looks like we’ve a storm.”

Zarine had spent her entire life on Serenno, the Eternal's call had been the first time she had ever ventured off planet. But that had been a dull affair compared to what she was experiencing now. Travelling within her means had meant jumping from one public transport option to another, uncomfortable seats, no view but the seat in front of you, and the less you spoke about the smells the better. This time she was flying on Ana's ship, and for the first time she understood why some were so fascinated by flying. Seeing her home recede behind her had been fascinating, but then seeing the expanse of space spread out all around them and the psychedelic expewirnce of going through hyperspace had been life changing.

So while Ana had been meditating on the darkness, preparing herself for what lay ahead, Zarine was having a completely different experience. She had spent the trip in the ship's bridge, sitting in the seat Ana had pointed her to, eyes locked out the viewport. The trip had made her realize just how small and insignificant she was, and how small her goals had been. She had been content to limit herself to Serenno, to build something there. But now, now she wanted more. She wanted to reach out through the stars, create something on the Galactic canvas.

As they approached the planet, she had her first actual look at a world that was not her own, at least from such a vantage point. And while the weather was not the most welcoming, she was filled with a sense of excitement at the prospect of stepping out and exploring this world. She had come along to help Ana, but now she had another motive. She would learn what she could, and use what she could to grow beyond the boundaries she had set for herself. She had been a small fish in a small pond, and there was much she would have to learn if she wanted to survive in the big wide sea.

"Understood." She replied, eyes still locked on the viewport. As a bolt of lightning streaked through the sky she smiled. "It's beautiful."

”Yeah…” she said, eyes scanning through the dense stormclouds. The ship had grown darker once they entered the clouds, and she was having to rely on Beegee’s assistance to navigate through it. Lightning streaked through the clouds like cracks in a window or a spider’s web, and several times she caught herself staring at them before realizing she needed to worry more about landing. Zarine was enamored by the sight, and it reminded Ana of herself not too long ago. There was still so much of the galaxy to see, and, even though she’d been to a handful of planets, each new one carried such mystery and awe to her.

The ship shuddered violently the deeper into the storm they got, and soon the sound of rain pelting the viewport was growing deafening. Whatever world this was, its storms were like the physical wrath of some irked god, and their ship was caught in the midst of its ire. Lightning strikes grew more and more common, almost to a worrying degree. She fought the controls in her hand, furrowing her brows in concentration. Behind her, Beegee beeped and buzzed in cadence with the rocking of the ship, struggling to correct its course.

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning slammed into the ship itself. Beegee whined as sparks flew from the port it was accessing and the droid quickly went quiet. ”Uh,” she said worriedly, suddenly feeling the ship give way as the controls fought harder against her grip. She spared a glance behind her at the disabled droid, then quickly looked ahead, her eyes growing wide. ”Shit, shit shit, shit,” she kept repeating under her breath, trying to steer the ship downward and out of the storm. With the loss of her droid helping navigate, as well as the downpour on the viewport, it was becoming difficult to know where the right direction was. She was still a novice pilot, and something like this was way out of her league.

Another jolt of electricity rocked the ship and the various systems in the cockpit began to flicker on and off. Warning lights popped up intermittently before going out. Another bolt of lightning hit the ship, briefly killing power before the emergency generator kicked in. Ana fought hard with the controls, but something about this storm seemed to be targeting their ship. She grimaced and grunted as she pulled up, but a final bolt of electricity hit the ship and killed the power entirely.

Ana screamed and looked over at Zarine with panic in her eyes. ”We’re going down!” she exclaimed, ineffectually pulling up on the controls to try and stop the rapid descent. The Muse became a rocket as it plummeted to the jungle below, and it wouldn’t take long before it crashed through several trees, slammed into the earth, and knocked Ana out cold.

Zarine went from experiences the highest highs of flight to the lowest low as they were caught up in a storm. The thunder and lightning stopped being mesmerizing the moment the first bolt hit their ship. Suddenly Zarine knew exactly why some people hated flying, and in that moment she would have most definitely counted herself within their ranks. Thankfully she didn't have much time to think on that as a particularly strong jolt whipped her head back and knocked her out even before the ship made its eventual dance through the trees to crash to the planet's surface.

When she came to, moments or hours later, her entire body seemed to be on fire, she felt pain everywhere. As she raised a hand to her head she felt something wet across the right hand side, assuming it was blood, and the sharp pain she felt as she pressed gently against her temple confirmed that the bang to the head that had knocked her out had also left a little souvenir. She let her hand wander, going from her head to her neck, and finally her shoulder, letting the pain guide her as she fell back into her training and started checking what if anything was broken. Thankfully it seemed to be mostly bangs and bruises, Ana must have managed to land them after all.

Her head whipped up as she thought of Ana, turning to the side towards the pilot's seat, but stopping mid way as she her gazed swept across the view-port. It was dark outside, and through the darkness peered a paired of glowing eyes. The only other part of the creature visible was the razor sharp teeth within the snarling, drooling mouth that was almost pressed up against the cracked and broken view-port.

"Ana!" She called urgently, eyes still on the creature as she reached out towards the pilot's seat. As the creature let out a loud howl, answering howls rang out from the night. Zarine finally dragged her eyes away from the creature and unbuckled herself and jumped towards Ana, shaking her awake as the creature started forcing itself in through the broken view-port. "Get up, now. We have to go!"

The darkness swallowed her whole. At first she thought she was dead, but the briefest sign of life flickered on her face as her eyelids fluttered. The inky blackness that was her vision slowly gave way to a hazy blur, and it took her several seconds to remember where she was. Her head pounded; the only thing she heard was a constant high-pitched squeal in her ears, like the sound one experienced when someone fired a ballistic firearm in a confined space. Her body ached, and she felt the warmth of blood flowing down the side of her face.

Ana groaned in pain. Her head throbbed, her vision swam, and she had quite a bit of blood oozing down her body from the impact. Nnh, she groaned as her hand rose to cradle her head. It felt like someone put a pneumatic jackhammer on her skull for an hour. The cockpit was dim, minus the occasional spark that brought a flickering light with it. A few fires burned over the consoles around them as well. Before she could do anything, Zarine began to violently shake her, rousing her from her stupor.

”Hnh- wha?” she groaned, looking at the woman before a movement in her periphery alerted her to the predator outside the cockpit. Her hair stood on edge and goosebumps lined her skin once she realized the perilous situation they found themselves in. Her shaky hands fumbled for the release on her harness and smeared blood all over it, but she eventually undid it and fell from her seat and onto Zarine. The ship was canted at an angle and she was unprepared for the sudden effect of gravity on her weakened body. When the two recovered, she scrambled for the door behind them and keyed it to no avail. Power was dead throughout the ship.

Shit.

She reached out with the Force and, hopefully with Zarine aiding her, forced the door open enough for the two to slide through and have it slam shut behind them. When they were alone in the darkness of the rest of the ship, Ana slumped against the bulkhead to catch her breath. Unbeknownst to them, the ship crash-landed hard. It carved a massive scar into the earth, bulldozing trees aside like they were nothing, before coming to a halt. Massive dirt embankments bordered it now, and the only two ways out for them would either be in an emergency hatch in the ceiling or through the cargo hold. Given the creatures lurking outside, neither option sounded ideal, but they first needed to clear their heads and figure out a plan.

Ana ran a hand through her hair, matting it down with blood, and sighed exasperatedly. It hurt to even think, and her body ached like nothing she’d felt before, except maybe after that ordeal on Tatooine with Talak. Her eyes lazily shifted over to Zarine and she stared at her for a moment before asking, ”Are you okay?” in a quiet, pained voice.

Zarine was barely able to hold herself and Ana up as the other woman finally came around, a mixture of fear and adrenaline keeping her from crashing to the cockpit's floor under the combined weight. As Ana started moving towards the cockpit door, Zarine looked back towards the view-port for a moment before following suit. The creature was still trying to claw and wriggle its way in, but the transparisteel seemed to be holding for now. As she reached the door, she noticed Ana struggling with the door's controls before sensing the Force swirl around her. Realizing the importance of every moment, she added in her own strength to get the door open just enough for the two of them to slide through. As it slammed shut behind them she slammed a hand against the bulkhead and started panting, relived that the door would atleast keep the creature outside the view-port at bay for now.

"I'm alright," she replied in between deep breaths, "relatively speaking. Don't think anything's broken. What about you?" She would have said more, but she noticed a toppled crate of some sort that seemed like a perfect place to sit down on and slowly made her way to it to settle down for a brief rest. But even as she was settling down a loud crash came from behind the door leading to the cockpit. The creature had finally broken through. And as her eyes went towards the door a clawed hand emerged from the seam of the door and started pulling it back oh so slowly, soon joined by another hand. IT had seen them open the door and slip through and had learned from it. Whatever this thing was it was smart, and it was hunting them.

"We have to move," she shouted as she jumped to her feet, "now!" She held out a hand for Ana to help pull her to her feet before darting down the corridor with her, making her way towards where she recalled the shit's main exterior doors to be. Thankfully that door slid open as she slammed her hand against the control, revealing the dark, and ominous looking night outside.

"Which way?" She asked Ana as they stepped out of the ship, her eyes darting this way and that, assuming that there were more of those creatures hidden in every shadow and behind every tree.

Ana nodded sluggishly, resting her head in her palm. It sounded like someone was beating a drum in it, and all she wanted to do was take a nap. She was certain that she was concussed, or, at the very least, seriously dazed, and that didn’t bode well for being marooned on a random, unknown jungle planet. At least Zarine seemed to be faring better than she was, though that wasn’t saying much to begin with. Truthfully, this was one of the direst situations she’d been in, and that’s including the time she and Talak were captives in some twisted “hunt.” "Everything hurts," she moaned, but now was not the time to lament their misfortune.

The crash from the cockpit keyed her in that whatever thing that was after them had broken through, and it was only a matter of time until it found them. Her eyes sat glued to the door, and she found herself holding her breath in anticipation until the first clawed hand sliced its way through the seam before being joined by its partner. Ana gasped and reached out for Zarine’s hand, grunting as she rose to her feet. The exertion made her eyes water, but the adrenaline pumping through her system helped alleviate it for the time being.

The two cultists ran blindly through the ship until they came to the exit they were seeking, and soon they found themselves in the darkness of the night. The storm that brought them down had not let up, and immediately the two would be drenched. Fat, heavy raindrops plummeted towards the ground and pelted them, amplifying Ana’s headache.

Her eyes darted around, trying to peer through the impenetrable confluence of darkness and rainfall. It reminded her of being hunted on Kashyyyk, in a way, and thus she went inward almost reflexively to draw upon the preternatural senses of the Force. At once she was buffeted with the overwhelming diversity of life here, and it took her addled mind a moment to tune out the background noise. She felt the creature behind them forcing its way through the door, as well as the myriad prey and predators lurking beyond. She dropped her hand to her side, and, miraculously, felt the comforting embrace of her lightsaber. She might have been stranded and concussed, but she wasn’t unarmed. That was a good enough sign as any.

”Anywhere,” she grunted before hopping down into the massive scar in the earth that her ship had created. She held a hand out for Zarine to take to help her down before turning and just lurching forward in a panicked run. The soil was mushy and hard to find footing in, but she trudged on regardless. They needed to find shelter from the downpour, as well as safety from… whatever that thing was. A cave was a good start, but she had no idea where to go to find that. Her first priority was to just get out of immediate danger. She blindly ran on, beckoning for Zarine to follow. She needed to trust that the Force would help guide them to where they needed to go.

As Zarine stood waiting for Ana to respond, the cold and rain hit her, and helped clear her mind a little. It also washed away some of the blood that had been running down one side of her face, clearing up her vision a little.

As Ana jumped off, Zarine took her offered hand and followed her down into the crater formed by their crash. She didn't really have much time to wonder at how lucky they had been in surviving the crash, for they were on the run once more. But while she didn't know if Ana was used to situations like this, Zarine had never really been one to rely on her physical abilities. Soon enough the adrenaline that had been keeping her moving started to wear out and she started stumbling. She was about to call out to Ana, asking to stop for a moment to catch her breath when her foot caught on a root and she went crashing to the ground.

She almost wanted to just lay there, but something she heard from the sound drew her attention, and as she used her hands to raise herself partly off the ground and turned her head to the side, she found herself facing another one of the creatures emerging from behind a tree. She was barely able to get a hand up before it jumped at her, only saved by another one of the creatures emerging from the trees and slamming into the one that had attempted to attack her.

She fell back, using her hands to scramble back from the two tussling beasts. "Ana!" She called out, without really thinking, and her voice broke up the fight between the two beasts. As they started moving towards her, she lashed out with the Force, a desperate attack meant to push them away. But in her exhaustion her control wasn't what it would normally have been and she only managed to send one of the creatures flying back to lightly hit a tree. The other continued stalking towards her, while the one she had thrown started getting to its feet as well. And in that moment she felt utterly, and completely, spent.

Ana’s escape was cut short when Zarine’s voice rang out in the darkness. She halted in place – almost losing a boot in the process as her foot got caught in the mud – and spun around to see Zarine scrambling back from two of the beasts. She lurched forward to go help her comrade, the combination of adrenaline and anger giving her enough energy to keep pressing on, despite her head trauma. The rain had luckily washed away the blood, but it made her cold, and the conditions of the terrain were quickly growing worse as the downpour continued.

The two beasts stalked towards Zarine, drool hanging from their mouths in thick strands. Rows of razor-sharp teeth lined their furry maws, visible only in the light provided by the occasional lightning strike. Before the closest one could get within lunging distance of Zarine, it was abruptly thrown backwards into the other beast. Ana charged through the muck and mire behind Zarine and grabbed her with a double under-hook grip to pull her to her feet. ”You gotta get up,” she barked exasperatedly, ”We gotta get out of here!” The creatures, having been slammed into each other, renewed their fight for the time being. One bit into the flesh of the other, causing it to let out a shrill wail that sent chills down Ana’s spine, but they had to keep running.

Ana helped Zarine to her feet and would run alongside her with Zarine’s arm around her shoulder to give her physical support. She was small, but the Force flowed through her body, empowered by the fear of death and anger at their predicament, which granted her strength. The creatures behind them fought one another, giving the two cultists a window of opportunity to flee to safety before they resumed the hunt.

Marching through the mud in the crater was difficult, but they were nearing the point of initial impact where it would be easier to climb out. Behind them, the beasts’ baying keyed them in that their fight was seemingly over, and now they would be back on the prowl. As they neared the edge of the crater, Ana would boost Zarine up first by taking a knee and letting her climb up her body to the surface. When she was up, Ana would, with Zarine’s help, climb up as well. The ground was more solid, thankfully, which would make it easier for them to run, but they still had the issue of nowhere to go and creatures hunting them.

”We need to find a cave… or a big tree.. or, god, somewhere safe,” she gasped, finding it difficult to hear her own words over the thrumming in her head and the roar of the torrential rain.

For a moment Zarine was sure she was about to die, and then the beasts were suddenly taking each other out and someone was pulling her up. Ana, she realized a moment later, thankful that she wasn't alone. She still felt spent, but was able to keep moving with Ana's help, who carried both their weights as they moved through the mud and rain.

Once they were both out of the crater, Zarine took a moment to just pause, catching her breath as she rested her hands on her knees and tried to center herself as Ana said something. She had trouble catching most of it over the rain, but she thought she got the gist of it. They needed cover, to rest and regroup before they ventured any further. She still felt like a dead woman walking, but standing on firm ground, and after a moment to center herself, she was able to touch the Force. With a clarity of mind that had escaped her earlier.

"That way!" She said, pointing off to the right, towards Force knew what. The downpour was making it difficult to see that far ahead, but it felt like the right direction. "It feels less...stinky that way." The Force felt muddled to her, whether it was the planet, or her own tiredness, she didn't know. But that was where they needed to go.

She didn't wait for Ana to agree or object, standing up straight and begining to walk. They weren't covering ground at any noticeable pace, but every step took them farther away from the crash site, and the two creatures. There might be more around them, but the possibility of some was still better than the certainty of two. Thankfully her brief moment of communing with the Force had not lead them astray, as she suddenly found her foot get caught in something and toppled forward headfirst, rolling down a short slope and coming to a stop somewhere dry. She had managed to trip over a root, and fallen into a small nook at the base of a huge tree, it's equally large roots twisting and twirling to create a tiny alcove.

"Down here!" She called out to Ana, leaning back against the roots and relaxing. "I think we can rest here."

It felt less stinky that way?

Ana couldn’t help but give Zarine a strange glance when she said that before she began to wander off to the right. Maybe she hit her head harder than she thought, or maybe that was just her way of describing the clarity the Force gave her. Either way, she wasn’t one to argue with the will of the Force; if it told her to go to the right, then they’d go to the right. Anywhere was better than standing around and becoming beast food, and the cold from the downpour was starting to get to her.

Ana wiped the water from her eyes and blew some out her mouth before following close to Zarine. Their pace was slow on account of the two wounded, disoriented, near-blind wandering, but it was forward movement, which was more progress than before. She kept an eye on Zarine to ensure she wouldn’t keel over or get left behind like last time. A strange noise caught her attention momentarily, and the second she took her eyes off Zarine, the woman tripped and fell down a short slope. Of course.

She carefully stepped over the root and followed the sound of Zarine’s voice before finding her at the base of the tree. Like the Force ordained, it offered a measure of respite and shielded them from the rain. Carefully, she slid down the slope on her feet, leaning back to make sure she wouldn’t stumble. The mud was slick and before long, she found herself wobbling before falling onto her back and finishing the slide that way. She groaned and grimaced as the cold, over-wet mud squished onto her clothing, but the sudden protection from the downpour silenced her. It was a noticeable difference once she was protected from the elements, and she groggily crawled forward to lean against the roots as well.

For a time, she simply leaned her head back on a thick root and breathed slowly, shivering all the while. Eventually she managed to lift her head and look at Zarine through heavy-lidded eyes. ”Good find,” she groaned out, ”I’m… so sorry this happened.” She pulled her knees to her chest and hugged them to warm up, turning her gaze out of their shelter to look at the downpour. She expected the creatures to find them at any moment, cold and huddled together for an easy meal.

”Are you okay?”

Zarine kept her eyes open long enough to make sure that Ana found her way down, and that nothing followed her down, her head falling back onto the roots and eyes drifting shut not one moment later. She was too tired to worry about things like keeping a watch, or taking measure of their injuries. They could wait till the morning for that. Provided they survived till the morning, but right then she didn't really care about that either.

She cracked an eye open as Ana spoke up some time later, having been on the verge of drifting off, but pushing sleep away once more and straightening herself up a little. "You couldn't have known this would happen." She replied as she started tearing off a piece of the tunic she wore under her cloak, using it to dab at the wound on her head that had started trickling down blood onto her face once more. "We just have to take it one step at a time, begining with getting some rest and not becoming dinner for some unlucky critter. Can you imagine either of us being a filling meal for one of those things out there?" She chuckled at her own joke, trying to liven up the mood a little, but only ended up making herself wince as something in her side hurt from the laughter.

"I'll be fine," she said once the painful chuckling was done, leaning back against the roots once more, "just need some rest. Maybe a short nap. How about you? Not going to die on me and leave me stranded here, are you?" Back with the forced levity, though this time she made do with just a slight smile to accompany the question. "Because that's what will happen, I have no idea how to fly that ship of yours, much less fix whatever damage it might have taken during the landing. I'll be marooned here without you."

Ana laid her head back on the root behind her and stared upwards at the shelter. It was extremely fortuitous that they found this place, but how long could they remain here? A few hours? Until sunrise? They needed some way off of a jungle world without any known population and with an extensively damaged ship, as well as significant injuries of their own. It was a nightmare; this was meant to be a low stakes expedition, and now it was quickly becoming the final moments of their lives. Still, she wasn’t alone, and that was more than she could ask for. The idea that Zarine might have declined her invitation and left her alone to be stranded on this world was frightening. She blinked away the rising tears at the futility of their situation. Now was not the time.

She laughed weakly at Zarine’s joke, but she was far too tired – and too fearful of alerting predators – to make any more of an effort than that. They were tiny, that was certain, so the fact that they were stranded in the jungle of a hostile world was almost ironic. Normally you expected some musclebound survivalist expert to be in this situation, not two Serennian bastard women. It was like the universe was playing some cruel joke on them. Ana couldn’t help but smile at the irony in all of it.

”No,” she sighed out in response to Zarine’s joke, ”No, I don’t think I’d like to die just yet. I’d like to look pretty for my funeral.” She chuckled grimly to herself and sighed, once again shuddering. At least her companion tried to brighten the mood of an otherwise dismal situation. The pounding of the rain had quickly become an afterthought now that they were relatively safe from it, though the water still ran down into their little hovel. In a way, it was almost soothing, and she quickly found herself beginning to nod off.

”Get some rest,” she suggested, ”When it’s dry and safe we’ll look around.” A million thoughts ran through her mind, but the one thing she cared about was sleeping. Probably not the best thing to do for someone who might be concussed, but she hardly doubted anyone around would mind, so long as she didn’t pass away in her slumber. Ana found a somewhat drier spot of dirt and squeezed up on it, curling into the fetal position to try and retain some warmth. Her head gently laid down on a root, and, though it was uncomfortable, her exhaustion put her to sleep almost immediately.

Hopefully tomorrow would be better.
