DESCRIPTION
The CM-1 mortar launcher, better known as the "Clone Mortar," is a type of light field artillery piece manufactured by Merr-Sonn Munitions. Originally developed for the Grand Army of the Republic, the CM-1 endured into the Imperial era, and was used by both sides of the Galactic Civil War. It endures into the present, proof that truly good ideas don't need much adaptation to stay relevant.

The CM-1 is a standard mortar-type weapon, that is a simple, low-velocity projectile launcher capable of throwing a decent-sized explosive charge onto a target some distance away. The CM-1 accomplishes this by means of a capacitor and a magnetic repulsion coil triggered by a switch at the base of the launching tube, which launches the projectile with sufficient force to put it on whatever target the operator designates. Mortars such as the CM-1 have an advantage over direct fire weapons such as laser cannons in that they are able to land indirect fire, their shots arcing high over obstacles that would otherwise shield dug in enemy positions. The CM-1 is able to hit targets up to 750 meters away, although the high arc of its shots does mean that the weapon can't be aimed at any target less than 75 meters distant. Aiming is accomplished by a computerized precision adjustment system, although the indirect nature of the weapon's fire means that gunners almost never actually see their target; spotters are usually required to call in fire adjustments during a bombardment.

The projectiles fired by the CM-1 are predominantly explosive rounds with a 3-meter blast radius, although smoke and gas projectiles are also available. Of note, mortar launchers such as the CM-1 are generally too heavy to be moved by a single soldier; a small team is usually required to haul, set up and operate the weapon. For extra mobility, some military, paramilitary and criminal groups have been known to mount mortars on light vehicles for fast deployment and retreat, convenient for hit-and-fade attacks.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Mortar launchers are extremely powerful weapons, and are thus banned on most civilized worlds.

INTENT
To bring a weapon from Canon into our site's fanon, and to provide an example of a standard mortar launcher.

RESTRICTIONS
Mortar launchers such as the CM-1 are not accurate enough to directly hit moving targets, especially PCs on foot.
