BIOGRAPHY

Born into the upper echelons of Brentaali nobility, Claudias’ life should’ve been an easy one. The second son of the lord Pterygas of the house Tannaras, he could expect to wield considerable authority; not just on his world, but on the galactic stage. Unfortunately, it became clear that the young Claudias was born with Cerebral Palsy. Brentaal was not so barbaric that a child born with an illness would be stunted forever. Instead, it was Claudias’ father that made the decision to deride him. Never a compassionate man, Lord Pterygas would often hurl venomous insults at his young son, disgusted by the display of weakness on his family line.

Apathetic to his plight, most of the court didn’t much care for Claudias’ treatment. None dared to show open compassion, risking the ire of the stringent Lord of their house. Even as the years went by and Claudias’ condition improved, going from two braces to one, barely being able to string a sentence together to stuttering only once or twice, the boy was subjected to serious isolation. His only solace was in his studies on the history of his homeworld. Learning was a process devoid of the cruelties that his father could subject him to.

The only serious exception for much of Claudias’ young life was his older brother, Andronikas. Heir to their father’s legacy, he was everything that the weak, stuttering boy wasn’t, physically and socially. Andronikas was a tall man with an imposing frame, while his face was as hardened as his father. Despite this outward appearance, Andronikas was very much different from the old lord. While he shared many of his father’s values and cared a great deal about his dynasty’s legacy, the greatest difference was in how Andronikas treated his younger, weaker brother.

So it was that, isolated and alone, Claudias took some reprieve with his older brother. Claudias would watch his brother fence, practice oratory, and fail miserably at art, while Andronikas would pretend to be interested as Claudias talked about the ancient history of their house. Even with their father constantly berating Andronikas for being “soft” on his “pathetic excuse for a brother,” the boy would still continue to show empathy for his brother, and refrain from any of the teasing and bullying the boy had to endure.

It was around the age of 15 in the year 116 ABY that something completely unexpected befell Claudias and his family. The Lord Pterygas had been struck with a catastrophic stroke, brought on during a heated conversation between him and his eldest son. By all accounts the man should have died, but somehow the monster that had tormented Claudias survived… in a form that made his son look able bodied by comparison. The mighty Lord Pterygas, not wanting to replace everything from the neck down with a robotic chassis, was confined to a wheelchair. Unable to move and only able to speak through a droid aid that could read the faintest movements of his lips, Pterygas was no longer in any shape to order the affairs of his house.

So it was that Claudias’ beloved brother became lord in all but name. He took to his new position well, and by all accounts he was far more amiable than his father. For the first time in his life, young Claudias was no longer under the thumb of a cruel, abusive excuse for a father. Yet it wasn’t sunshine and rainbows for the young man. As his career began to finally start advancing, the realities of Brentaali politics became all the more obvious. Corruption was rampant, the planet’s trade was siphoned into the noble’s pockets. For one who’d believed his position came with the responsibilities of aiding his subjects, Claudias began to feel inadequate.

He could’ve been able to find solace in his brother, but the man he’d cared so much about had… changed. The strong, kind older brother he’d always known had been replaced with an apathetic, practical politician. He engrossed himself in the politics of his family, and began to take his brother less and less seriously. While Claudias’ life had improved, he’d felt as if he’d lost his one and only true friend. So, like his brother, he became invested in his work.

The Public Assembly became a second home to the man, and he’d spend many a sleepless night working for what he perceived to be the common good. Ofcourse, he couldn’t ever work to pass something that would upset the balance of power. His brother had given him very specific instructions, and warned of the consequences. Claudias always had to remain on the balance between pursuing his political goals, and risking forceful withdrawal from the Assembly. Yet between this balance, a shrewd politician was born.

PERSONALITY

Perhaps one of the only men of Brentaal’s upper crust to care for the people of his world, Claudias has never been popular amongst his own class. Still regularly insulted for his speech impediment, tick, and tendency to drool, he’s widely viewed by the upper crust of society as a joke. It’s turned him into a shy, reclusive man, dedicated more to his work than social interaction. He tends to avoid conversation, and would rather spend his days in the massive study he had built. Such is life for Uncle Claudias.

Despite his reputation for being a drooling fool, however, Claudias is anything but. A shrewd mind and a passion for academics has turned the man into a masterful scholar of all things historic and political. If there’s a treaty, he’s written an essay on it. If there’s a war, he’s produced a commentary on it. Ofcourse 95% of what the man has written, he’s been too shy to publish.

Years of torment would make a less fortunate man bitter. Instead, Claudias was blessed with a handful who genuinely cared for him. Years of being on the receiving end of cruelty never hardened him into a spiteful, self serving man, but nurtured a sense of compassion inside him. His shyness will melt away in the face of most injustice, from massive poverty to the screams of a sentient being mugged. Even if his protestrations are ultimately impotent, he’ll fight for a galaxy that isn’t stacked in his favor.

GENERAL ATTRIBUTES

Strength-- Claudias has lived a life devoid of any amount of manual labor. Servants have always worked to provide him with all he’s needed, allowing him to live a sedentary existence. His diet has mostly consisted of gourmet meals of middling protein and high calories. Additionally, due to his condition, Claudias’ father never bothered to train him in physical combat. All of this has led to a rather poor physique.

Perception-- years of reading both textbooks and legal documentation has given Claudias a keen eye. It’d be difficult for even the most minute details to escape his gaze, ranging from the slightest legal slip up to the smallest fleck of paint on a piece of art. This talent expands to near all of his senses as well; keen hearing to catch mistakes in wording during an argument or legal case, a sense of smell honed from sneaking into the kitchens of his family’s palace, and taste developed by some of the finest cuisine the galaxy can eat.

Endurance-- despite living a relatively pampered lifestyle, Claudias has been able to develop both a physical and psychological layer of thick skin. Pain means very little to the main, and he can work through some of the sharpest pains one can endure.

Charisma-- Claudias is in no way, shape or form naturally charismatic. He has to compensate for this by being an incredibly conversationalist, but that’s a completely different skill set.

Intelligence-- a mind crafted from the finest writers of all the ages, to call Claudias a fool would be to call Brentaal’s Public Assembly “Democratic.” Already intelligent, the man has cultivated a robust intellect through years of academic excellence. His quick wit is a boon in both dangerous situations, and casual discussions.

SKILL AND EQUIPMENT

Oratory-- in spite of his crippling speech impediment, Claudias is a surprisingly persuasive man. Never putting work into his own appearance, or developing the combat prowess of his brother and other relatives, he’s had to rely on talking his way out of a situation for most of his life. His skills with speech are a useful boon in social situations, or in the event that he needs to talk his way out of a mugging.

Combat-- never receiving much of an education in fighting, Claudias is, to put it bluntly, a terrible fighter. He has no skill, no technique, and very little strength. He isn’t terrible with a blaster pistol though, and can be reasonably expected to shoot straight in a less volatile situation.

Been cooking this guy up for awhile. I think it'll be an interesting experience regardless of how things go.
