Predule: The Force Finds a Way

Lyra Jiang was a part of the Living Force. Her dreams, those daytime fantasies she had wandering the shelves of the library in which she worked, had turned into a reality. The night before, she came face to face with death, and then the man who had rescued her from it. Oren Zapan, Jedi Knight. He offered her a chance to become more than what she was.

She accepted.

However, there were other matters to settle. First and most importantly, her single caretaker and the only person in her life worth mattering: Liu Zheng. In some ways, she was like a grandmother to Lyra, and in others, her only friend. If it hadn’t been for her, Lyra would have been long dead or worse.

Liu deserved to know where she was going, and why.

Sitting on the bedside of Liu’s tiny hundredth-level-floor apartment, Lyra had one leg over the other and both hands intertwined, anxious and afraid of what she might think. She told Liu everything: the data chip she stole, the strange men she encountered, the Jedi who saved her, who extended his hand out to join him.

Although Liu had shown great worry and distress at hearing Lyra came very close to dying, her face was blank now, knowing her little girl was on the cusp of becoming a Jedi. She was leaving soon, about to embark on a journey nobody could have known or expected, and yet, Liu seemed almost unsurprised. Like she had always known Lyra was special somehow.

Lyra dispelled those thoughts and instead tried to break the silence between them, saying, “I know what you’re thinking, Nana. I don’t to leave you, I really don’t, but this is something I have to do. You know I can’t stay here forever. I have to find who I am. Who they are. My parents.”

Liu smiled, softly, like a blooming lotus. “I know, child. I know.”

“What do you mean you know?”

“I know that this is what you’ve always wanted. You’ve told me before, many times, about making a story of your own, and I know this is your opportunity to do it,” said Liu, with a sense of wisdom and sincerity that always made Lyra smile.

And smile she did. “Then you understand?”

“I do,” Liu said. “It will be very dangerous where you are going, but you will be safe with the Jedi. Learning what you have to. You will encounter many difficulties. Things that you will struggle to overcome, but I know you will make it through.”

Lyra nodded with tears in her eyes. She loved her Nana more than the world, and it would break her heart to leave her in this terrible city.

“I wish I could take you with me,” said Lyra, choking up.

“Child,” Liu said and hugged her close. “You’ll be fine. I’ll be fine.” She looked her dead in the eye now. “Let me tell you something, Lyra. I have walked the path of life for a long time, and I will continue walking for as long as I need to. You need not worry about me.”

Their hands wrapped together. Lyra squeezed, nodding a second time.

“Just know this,” said Liu. “Life is not just about what you do, it’s more about how you do it.” (x)

Outside, on the landing platform where Oren was waiting patiently to depart with Lyra, she and Liu hugged. It might have lasted minutes, maybe longer. Lyra had since lost track of time, her surroundings transformed into a surreal blur as the realization that she was really leaving Coruscant finally hit. She was free now.

Liu was the first to break the hug, and perhaps because she knew Lyra wouldn’t let go. Threading strands of her hair between her wrinkled fingers, she smiled and said, “Don’t do anything stupid, okay?”

“I’ll try my best,” said Lyra.

“Good,” Liu said. “And know I will always be here for you, Lyra. Always.”

“I’ll come to visit as soon as I can, Nana. I promise.”

“I would hope so,” said Liu. In the distance, Oren stood at the foot of his personal shuttle, his face soft and caring, same as when Lyra first saw it. “Go on now, child. He’s waiting for you, and so is your new life. Go to him, before I change my mind and shackle you here with me forever.”

Lyra nodded. The third and last time. “Goodbye, Nana.” Moments later, she was gone, and so was her life as it once was.
