Checkmate was formed six standard years ago by the criminal and terrorist known only as the Architect. Its purpose is twofold. The public, legal front for the organization is led by the White King and is the White Set, the main source of funding for the rest of Checkmate. It provides private investigations, cargo runs, and bodyguards from their small PMC; Checkmate Interstellar Defense. The illegal core of the organization is led by the Black King and is the main body of Checkmate. The Black Set carries out the Black King’s orders, sabotaging government operations, taking prisoners, carrying out political murders and any other form of terrorism the Architect deems necessary.

They have no central headquarters for authorities to assault, and communicate through a mindboggling maze of information and communication arrays. They have regional authority brokered among planetary sectors that mirror the Republic’s official sector division, and even have operations active in Hutt Space.
Rank is divided among the White and Black Sets, sharing in name but differing in function. The ranks are as follows: King, Queen, Bishop, Rook, Knight, and Pawn. It will be necessary to understand the operations of Checkmate to understand the individual duties of each rank from each Set.

The Black Set is the illegal heart of Checkmate, and is divided as such: The Black King organizes the operations of the Black Set with assistance from the Black Queen, who share equal power in operation; the Bishops are an internal enforcement team, tasked with ensuring the Black King and Queen’s orders are followed to the letter, and to stamp out dissention in the ranks; the Rooks are the lieutenants in the Black Set, coordinating the operations of various agents and often planning missions at the behest of the King and Queen; the Knights are the main body of the organization, acting as the field operatives and agents of the King and Queen, with two chief Knights, one who serves the King directly, and one who serves the Queen; and the Pawns are the support staff, providing assistance to the Knights and also charged with gathering intelligence and aiding the Knights however needed.

The White Set, on the contrary, is the purely legal, if immoral, side of Checkmate, and is divided as such: The White King organizes the businesses of the White Set with assistance from the White Queen, who share equal power in business decisions; the Bishops act as the personal police force of Checkmate Industries -the holdings company of Checkmate which is run by the White Rooks- and ensure that nothing that could jeopardize Checkmate’s true goals ever sees the light of day, and they also make sure that local authorities who start sniffing out anything iffy about Checkmate Industries realize that there’s nothing of value to investigate; the Rooks deal with the various businesses attached to the Checkmate International (run by the Rooks as well), ensuring that the Board of Directors of the various companies are controlled by members of Checkmate; the Knights are largely members of Checkmate Interstellar Defence and act as bodyguards and enforcers to those who can afford it; and the Pawns are the private investigators hired out by Checkmate and also act as government liaisons for the companies controlled by Checkmate International.

Formed as a way to support the Architect’s mission, Checkmate has quickly evolved in to its own form of enterprise, and has quickly changed the Architect’s initial goals of anarchy and personal-government to control and power. It cannot be said to be a good change, but it is there, and now Checkmate is staged to strike out and take the Galaxy by storm, quietly slipping in to every nook and cranny of every government to guide it to its liking.

Checkmate Industries (CMI) originally started out as a holdings company six years ago by Julian Hod Kurtz, secretly the White King of the criminal enterprise known as Checkmate. The post-war boom the Galaxy was experiencing meant the creation of hundreds of tiny companies, which CMI quickly began buying out with the private wealth gathered over three decades by the secret benefactor, the Architect. As such, it quickly had a plethora of businesses tied directly the CMI, ranging from manufacturers, retailers, and even research businesses.

Hostile takeovers were abounding under the careful eye of Mr. Kurtz, and many of these tiny companies were merged in to various large companies, all with the Checkmate gold-standard name. Some of the most prominent branches of Checkmate Industries are as follows:

 • Checkmate Insurance
 • Checkmate Sports
 • Checkmate Clothes
 • Checkmate Transport
 • CheckTech
 • Checkmate Defences

Aside from the main companies, Checkmate Industries provides facilities and funding for researchers to experiment under their R&D Department, with conditions that any successful products or technologies produced by said researchers are licensed and distributed by Checkmate Industries.

The varied design of CMI required many different facilities to produce and construct all their products. Production facilities on Metellos take advantage of the destitute civilians for cheap labour, while CMI’s chief Research facilities were situated on Coruscant and the Coruscanti moon Centax-2 was the main testing site for CMI’s space faring defences, vessels, and weapons.

The final piece that makes up CMI is Checkmate Interstellar Defence (CID). CID is the defence force that is hired off by CMI Customers who require well trained bodyguards for personal protection, insurance for cargo runs, and standing guards at various private instillations. It has also been used by planetary governments who, in times of crisis, require extra manpower for their police forces. CID has been targeted many times by Senators trying to keep the power of CMI in check, pinning false accusations of illegal activity on the private military, however it has always fallen through the cracks of bureaucracy.
