DESCRIPTION
The Berex-class carrier is a warship produced by the venerable Domel-Berger Yards, a well-regarded manufacturer of primarily large capital ships for various military customers across the Galaxy. Although DBY became famous for its heavily armed, thickly armored corvettes, frigates and cruisers, its carrier designs have also carved out a good reputation for themselves, the Berex included.

The Berex-class carrier, unlike "proper" warships, is a fairly lightly armed and armored design, with only a durasteel hull and 10 defensive laser turrets, though it does have respectable shields. It is slow, only capable of 40 MGLT, and sluggish to maneuver, but like all carriers its main strength is not what it can do alone, but its payload.

The Berex can carry up to 96 small craft, including 72 starfighters or light starbombers, 6 whole squadrons, and up to 24 shuttles or other, similarly sized craft. In addition, 12 external docking rings can accommodate as many vessels attached to the ship's hull. Serving these vessels is a crew of 300, including bridge crew, supply personnel, technicians, flight controllers and others, and not including things like air crews, who are typically carried as passengers.

The Berex has a single, cavernous hangar, running the length of the ship and open at both ends; ships are typically parked along the walls, with the center space reserved for staging takeoffs and landings. The carrier has extensive facilities to refuel, resupply, maintain and repair its complement, including 2 machine shops which can recondition and even fabricate replacement components for a variety of starships, the latter being of course short of major systems such as hyperdrive cores and entire spacecraft from scratch, although with sufficient suitable components they have been known to pull off miracles. The Berex is also equipped with extensive facilities to support its organic charges as well; an extensive medical suite is available, more comprehensive than is typically found on most warships, along with recreational facilities to alleviate tension and boredom on long deployments.

The Berex-class carrier, like most such vessels, is not intended to operate as an independent element, usually receiving at least a few escorts if it is not actually part of a fleet. Due to its relative vulnerability, it uses its starfighters and other craft as its main "armament," sitting back at long range while the vessels it supports get stuck in with the enemy. In return, it supports them as a mobile base of operations. Carriers are often used to augment a fleet's starfighter cover, often enabling aerospace superiority even in engagements far from the support of land-based fighters. They also greatly extend the range of starfighters which are not equipped with their own hyperdrives, in a more secure manner than things like detachable hyperdrive rings and sleds.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Berex-class carriers are naturally classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess the ability to carry and support large numbers of military craft. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create a standard carrier.

RESTRICTIONS
The Berex-class carrier is a large capital ship with a high starfighter capacity, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They can be acquired as faction assets with proper staff oversight, however.
