While the ship landed in the spaceport of Bal’demnic, Jedi Knight Tarek Ordeen gave the last instructions to the Padawans that were going to participate in this diplomatic mission with him. Once they had approached the planet, the Corellian man had gathered them around a holotable and showed them images of what they were going to see on the surface.

“The Kon’me live in settlements in the several islands of Bal’demnic. Their society is divided in two social classes, an upper-class that resided in luxurious bubble-like structures on oceanside cliffs, and a lower-class that lived in simple beachside dwellings.” the Corellian man said, while pointing to the structures that covered the holographic image of the island.

However, what the Kon’me are most famous for is their distrust of outsiders. They had problems with colonialists and during the Clone Wars.” so species liked to maintain old ways, even after so many centuries. “It took much time for the Order to arrange this visit, so we need to be careful. If we want their support and access to cortosis, we need to convince both the lower and upper class.” Knight Ordeen turned to the Padawans “Any question?

None.” Vand said nonchalantly, without moving his blue eyes out of his datapad. During the trip to the planet, he had already read an entire holobook about the Kon’me culture. Now he was reading one about the Outer Rim stages of the Clone Wars, which the Battle of Bal’demnic was part of.

While people around him would think that he was bored by the entire situation, Vand was using his books to remain calm. He understood that this mission was very important and nothing could go wrong.

Leon stood on his tiptoes to see the holotable the Jedi Knight was using to display the mission details. When the knight asked if there were any questions, Leon’s hand shot up, “If they don’t like outsiders and we have to somehow convince both classes to like us, what’s the play?” While the info dump the knight had given was all well and good, Leon couldn’t help but notice there wasn’t really any plan in place and honestly that kind of freaked him out.

He couldn’t help wondering if this mission would even be possible, getting the rich and the poor to agree on anything was an enormous ask. It was like asking a shadow to shine. Luckily, the Knight smiled easily and said, “Luckily for us, the force will provide.

Leon blinked.

Before he could raise his hand again, the Corellian knight laughed, “I’m messing with you. We have meetings with representatives from both classes. I’ve no doubt they’ll air their grievances and then the force will provide the answer.

The Padwan felt better knowing this wasn’t a Jedi cold call. From his personal experience, he’d always found groups of people were more willing to listen after you’d helped them. Now, he just hoped the people of Bal’demnic would be open to their help.

Terek Ordeen, clapped his hands together, then raised them, “Alright, if everyone’s ready let’s head out. Baudelaire, Hastakor, you two are with me.

Leon nodded then looked around for the other padawan, Ordeen had mentioned. He spotted an unassuming guy that seemed more interested in his datapad than the mission at hand, but Leon knew better than to judge a book by it’s cover. Instead, he stepped up to the guy and introduced himself.

Hey man, I’m Leon,” he’d hold out a hand to shake, “Looking forward to the mission, this your first one?

By this time, Leon was closing in on the trials. His experience on Kashyyyk, Ellora, Christophsis, and Chandrilla, had all culminated at this moment. He was ready for whatever the force had to throw at him. Now, he just hoped he was ready for whatever Bal’demnic had in store.

Even if Vand was reading, he was still aware of what others were saying around him. While his eyes never left the datapad, the half-Nagai mentally agreed with his fellow Padawan. Besides the distrust for outsiders, the boy had read that the two classes already had their own conflicts. He had no idea how they were going to convince the two sides to agree on the same thing. The Jedi have a big problem in front of them.

Ordeen’s answer was enough to make the half-Nagai stop reading and stare briefly at the Knight in disbelief. The Corellian could be serious. Going to a situation like that without any solid plan was stupid. He understands the importance of believing, but they could at least make things easier by having a strategy.

He was prepared to argue about it and suggest that they should leave when the Knight laughed and explained that there was a plan. Vand rolled his eyes and returned to his reading, still feeling a bit uncertain about leaving the Force to provide the answer. They could help it by applying logical thought.

When Terek ordered them to follow him, Vand sighed. He had started the chapter about the Battle of Felucia and wanted to finish it. Unfortunately he was going to be able to do it after the end of the mission. While he placed his datapad inside his bag, the half-Nagai heard his fellow Padawan talking with him.

The boy turned to stare at Leon with his blue eyes and serious expression. “Hello, I’m Vand.” there was no chance in Hell that he was going to say his awful name for others, even less someone that he had met for the first time. “No, it isn’t.” he said, while picking his bag.

Usually he would have preferred to remain in silence, but since they were going to work together, some small conversation could be good. “I believe that this isn’t your first either.” the half-Nagai gave a long look at Leon, analyzing the other Padawan. “You are going to become a Knight soon, right?

Leon’s smile faltered for a split second when Vand hit him with his super serious expression. Luckily, Leon regained his composure and answered, “Nice to meet you, Vand.

Vand made mention of knighthood and Leon shrugged, “Maybe, that’ll depend on the trials I guess,” he had a little anxiety about the trials. Ezra and Dash both had been chosen by masters, but he'd been passed over. It felt like he'd had to teach himself most of what he knew and that wasn't a great feeling when it came to theory about the metaphysical. Still, he couldn't help but wonder what he'd done wrong during the selection process.

What about you, you close?” he asked. The pair following the knight would exit the transport and step into a speeder. Once inside Terek would elaborate on their situation.

Our contact is a representative from BalCort mining,” as the knight spoke, Leon pulled out his datapad and pulled up the company mentioned. “BalCort is owned by one of the richest nobles on the planet. Surprisingly enough, the Nobel in question, Beyaz Sulfur, is known for being a benevolent businessman, that garners respect in both classes. If we can land in Sulfur’s good graces this mission will basically finish itself.

Leon looked up from his datapad, “So, what’s the catch?

The Corellian quirked a smile at him, “The catch is what we’re going to have to offer in order to get on his good side.

Leon shot Vand a “That sounded creepy look, right?” look then aimed it at the Jedi knight who bust out laughing, “You guys are so easy to mess with!

Leon’s expression went flat, was this guy looking down on him? He managed a plaid chuckle before reiterating, “So, seriously, what’s the catch?

Terek’s face fell marginally, but he answered, “One of the main reasons the natives hate outsiders is because of the Cortosis Wars currently plaguing the planet.” The knight glanced over at Vand, “Isn’t that right Vand?

Leon realized the datapad other guy had been studying was about Bal’Demnic and found himself impressed. A lot of the time it seemed like most Padawan’s just showed up to a mission like it was a date. It was nice to know the other guy was putting in the work. It inspired Leon to take a little time to familiarize himself with the planet more as well. If Leon was unsure about a social custom he’d be sure to defer to Vand.

So, the catch is going to depend on how accurate the rumors are about this benevolent Ore-Duke.

Leon didn't like the sound of that. He'd read a little bit about the wars, it'd been the most exciting part of the planet briefing, but that didn't mean he wanted to participate in them. He didn't like the thought of picking a side in a conflict he had nothing to do with. That was way too close to how the Sith invaded Adumar.

"We're not lightsabers for hire," he muttered.

You don’t say Padawan,” shot back Terek. “I said he’s going to ask, and we can deny and see if there’s another option. The Force will guide us, have faith.

This time it was obvious Jedi Ordeen was serious. Leon chewed on the inside of his lip. It was so easy to say you had faith, but actually having it was a whole different story. Leon took a slow breath in. He trusted the air would be there, and it was. He held it for a second and then let it out. He was one with the force and it was with him. He just needed to believe in himself and the force would do the rest.

They had a few minutes before the speeder reached it’s destination. Leon was still feeling chatty, but he wasn’t trying to annoy Vand. So, he looked out the window to pass the time.

Leon’s answer to his question made Vand a bit unsure of how to answer. He could feel some anxiety coming from the other Padawan, which showed that he wasn’t so sure about the possible positive result of the trials.

I think that you’ll be good. Only 57% of the Padawans don’t pass.” he said, in a weak attempt to comfort the other boy. Even if the use of numbers to prove a point was possibly a terrible way of comforting someone, Vand modulated his voice to have a soothing effect. He knew that he was terrible in dealing with other people, so he decided to apply that ability inherited from his Nagai father.

He shook his head in answer to Leon’s question. “I still have much to learn, besides I don’t have a Master yet.” Vand was aware that these days many Padawans become Knights by training alone. However, the half-Nagai could use some guidance in the more spiritual side of being a Jedi.

The Padawans followed Ordeen inside the speeder and Vand continued his reading as soon as he sat. However, he continued paying some attention to what was being said around him. The Knight explained that they were going to meet Beyaz Sulfur, apparently a benevolent businessman that was willing to hear them.

The half-Nagai rolled his eyes discreetly when Ordeen once again messed with Leon. It seemed that the Knight still needed to become more mature. He was acting worse than a teenager with these things. They were trying to do a serious job here.

When the Knight said his name, Vand immediately stared at him. His cheeks were red with the fact that the older Jedi was very aware of what he was reading and that he was doing it while the others talked. Nonetheless, he answered the question. “Yes.” he turned to look at Leon, not sure if the other knew what they were talking about.

In the end, the half-Nagai decided to explain. “The Cortosis Wars are a series of conflicts dating from the time of the Old Republic. They started when this ore was first found in Bal’Demnic. The great corporations try to secure rights over it, sometimes even through violence. They seek support from the locals, which can start bloody civil wars. It’s what is happening at the moment.

Like Leon, Vand also disliked the fact that a businessman could use them as lightsabers for hire. They were Jedi, not mercenaries. Hopefully the Force would provide better answers if it ended up being proposed by Sulfur.

While the speeder moved, the pale boy could feel the other Padawan would occasionally look at him before turning to the window. He sighed discreetly, before turning his datapad down. “Do you want to talk? I can finish my book later.” even if he wanted to continue reading, the half-Nagai understood that social interactions were important. Besides, Leon was being nice so far.

Huh, Leon thought as the other padawan pointed out the precise percentage he had at failing, and honestly, it made him feel a little bit better, “Thanks Vand.

The Adumarian found himself wide-eyed with surprise, he made a gesture toward Terek, and said, “Oh really? I just assumed you two were Padawan and Master.

Ordeen chimed in, “I prefer working with classes. Vand’s great, but I don’t think I’m ready for the responsibility of being a master. I’m happy giving you kids right back to the order when the mission is done,” he laughed, and his candor actually made Leon relax a little. He was starting to think Terek was a train wreck, but he had to have some maturity hiding under that Corellian bluster if he could be honest about his weak points. Leon made a mental note to keep that example in mind.

Vand’s explanation of the Cortosis wars was so by the book, Leon wondered if the guy had a photographic memory. Leon watched the city of Dan’ic drift by when Vand spoke up. He looked back to the other guy and while not trying to seem too eager he said, “Yeah, sure.

With Vand’s invitation, he thought the other guy had something to talk about, but an awkward silence fell between them. Leon cleared his throat and asked, “Okay, two questions, how long have you been with the order and where are you stationed currently?

Even if had tried to hide it, Vand noticed that Leon was eager to talk with him. The half-Nagai had hoped that the other Padawan would have declined, but it wasn’t the case. Now he would be forced to do the thing that he hated the most after needing to say his own full name: small talk.

I joined the Order three years ago.” he said, going directly to the point and not giving details about his life prior to joining the Jedi. It wasn’t because the pale boy had anything to hide, but because he was taking Leon's rule of two questions seriously. There wasn’t any question about his parents or about what he used to do at his home.

The second question also had a brief answer. “I’m stationed in Ithor.” since the fall of Yavin IV, most of the Padawans were on that planet. He would love to have had the chance to visit the library that existed in the Jedi Temple of Yavin, but he couldn’t say anything bad about the collection that was in the one where he lived.

After he answered the questions, an awkward silence would fall between them. Although it was more to Leon than to Vand, who was looking at the other Padawan with his neutral face. He felt tempted to end this small exchange of words and return for his datapad, but it would probably be impolite on his part. The other Jedi probably was expecting that he would also ask something.

I also have two questions. Did you have any recent mission and where are you stationed?” he decided to repeat the same one that Leon did. He believed that it would be only fair if the other also revealed where he was living at the moment, since Vand had done the same.

Leon crossed his arms over his chest listening intently. He loved hearing people's stories. Half the time he felt like he was being told a secret.

Wow, three years, that’s awesome!” He and Vand were close to the same age, which meant the other padawan had lived a whole different life before becoming a Jedi, just like he had. He made a mental note the feel out the territory a little later.

Actually, I just got back from a mission on Berchest,” said Leon. His enthusiasm waned just a bit as he said it. That mission had been terrifying, to say the least. Deciding to quickly change the subject he said, “Funny you should ask, I’m stationed on Ithor, too.” The speeder began to descend and Leon turned to look out the window.

Oh, whoa, check this out!” he said leaning back so Vand could see.

Their destination was built into the side of a mountain. Sheer rock face intertwined with smooth duracrete. The BalCort headquarters was quite literally the size of a mountain. While this wasn’t the wildest thing he’d seen, it was impressive, and based on the rest of the buildings he’d seen it was glaringly clear that the Ore-Dukes were fabulously wealthy.

We should train together sometime when we get back to Ithor,” he said as he stepped out of the shuttle. Jedi Odeen took point and Leon fell in behind him. Two guards flanked a man in a suit holding a datapad. A smile that screamed customer service was smeared across the man’s face and it sharpened as they approached.

Welcome to BalCort, we’re very excited to have you. Please follow me.
Thank you—er, okay?” replied Terek.

Terek didn’t look back at them, but Leon could feel the knight reaching out with the force and surveying the area as they moved into the cliffside headquarters. Ordeen’s wariness put Leon on edge, but he knew better than to give in to his anxiety, too bad the impending meeting of this “Benevolent” Ore-duke Beyas Sulur had him wall-wound up. As they fell in behind their guide, the guards dropped back to flank the Jedi. A fact that Leon didn’t like one bit.

When Leon mentioned his mission on Berchest, the half-Nagai felt that there was something more to this story. However, since his question wasn’t for details, Vand didn’t say anything. If the other boy wanted, he would eventually tell this story. Besides that, the pale Padawan wasn’t curious or anything. After all, I'm not a gossiper. He thought, obviously trying to hide from himself the fact that he wanted to hear more about it.

Vand nodded after hearing Leon’s revelation that he also lived in Ithor. "I'm not surprised that we never saw each other. I spend most of my free time in the Archives." he once again looked up and down at his fellow Padawan. "You don’t seem to be the type to stay reading here." the pale boy said nonchalantly, not considering that the other could feel offended by it.

He leaned to watch what the other Padawan was pointing at the window and saw the impressive building that was the BalCort headquarters. It was a perfect example of the architecture that represented the upper-class of the planet. "Exactly how it is written in the books.” the pale boy commented, still amazed with the sight.

Yes, I would like that.” Vand rarely trained with his lightsaber, preferring to stay among his books. He always thought that this part of being a Jedi was boring. Perhaps having someone to train with him would make things more interesting.

As the Padawans followed Ordeen out of the speeder, they were welcomed by a male Kon’ me dressed in a suit. The half-Nagai never thought that he would see a being of this species looking like a businessman from Coruscant. It seemed that while they distrusted outsiders, they still liked to use clothes of foreign brands.

After the quick welcome, the Jedi were led inside the building. Like the others, Vand had also used the Force to feel his surroundings, but found nothing uncommon. With everything calm, the pale boy picked two lollipops from his bag and offered one to Leon. “Do you want one?

Leon was focused on his surroundings when he heard the rustling of plastic, his brow cocked as he saw Vand holding two suckers. His mouth started watering immediately. How long had it been since he’d had candy?

Thanks,” he replied taking the sucker and tucking it into his utility belt. He didn’t think it was appropriate right now, but he’d savor the kriff out of that thing later. The distraction had helped him relax. Ever since Berchest, he hadn’t felt right. He was nervous a lot. He took a breath trying to find the same conviction in his mantra, “I breath in the force and have faith that it will fill my lungs…” he whispered.

They were led into the massive building. The interior was as impressive as the exterior. It was clear that the disparity between the two classes was so immense, that just by stepping into this building it felt as though you were transported to a different world. Leon kept his face impassive, but he was floored. This might be the nicest place he’d ever been. If only it hadn’t been purchased with the oppression and subjugation of the less fortunate.

Terek tried to start a conversation multiple times, but the snazzy-looking Kon’me only had one response, “All of your questions will be answered, by the magnanimous, Bayas himself. Thank you for your patience.

The Corellian was fuming but kept his cool. He slowed a pace falling in step with Leon and Vand.

Be ready for anything, something doesn’t feel right.

Leon clenched his jaw before flicking a nervous glance to Vand and then to Terek before nodding. He took another breath remembering his prayer. After rounding a corner they came to a lift. One of the guards swiped a fob and the sharp HISS of compressed air announced the opening door. They all stepped in. Honestly, it was kind of cramped, and super awkward. After what seemed like an eternity the doors slid open and they filed out into a grand office decorated with tons of Bal’denmic art.

To Leon’s surprise, Beyaz wasn’t Kon’me. Beyaz Sulfur was a human.

Heh-Hello my friends,” he said spreading his arms wide in a voice that reminded Leon of a kindly uncle. Beyaz was dressed simply compared to his surroundings. He was in an identical suit to the Kon’me that led them here. He sported a well-kempt pure white beard and piercing blue eyes that seemed out of place with his friendly demeanor. He had no hair on top of his head, but the sides matched his beard.

Thank you for agreeing to meet with me, I’m sure that as the galaxy’s peacekeepers, you must be incredibly busy.” Then as if startled he said, “Oh my, where are my manors, I, as I’m sure you have probably guessed, am Beyaz Sulfur.

Terek stepped forward and gave a formal bow. Leon followed suit from his position. “We’re glad we could answer your call, sir. I’m Jedi Knight Terek Ordeen, and these are my Padawan’s Leon Baudelaire and Vand Hastakor.

Leon gave a little two-finger salute when he was introduced. Beyaz acknowledged them with a nod.

Please, take a seat,” Beyaz said gesturing to a group of couches against a massive window overlooking the beautiful landscape of Bal’Demnic.

Once they were all seated, Beyaz said, “Czerka is here and they want our, I’m sorry my planet’s, resources. They’ve been hitting cargo trains along the coast for the past month. Each attack gets bolder. Last week we lost fifteen workers to an attack. Please identify the murderers and bring them to justice!

Anytime. I have more of these.” Vand said, while passing the sweet to Leon. The half-Nagai always brought more than would be necessary for his condition. “I also have some packs of roll cakes, if you are feeling hungry.” he showed said cakes inside his bag. If this mission ended having problems and needed to hide, the pale boy had enough snacks to feed them for some time.

Once they were inside the building, Vand could see that the place was luxurious like the outside. Perhaps even more, because the golden and white colors used in the decoration gave the impression that everything was made of gold and ivory. The Padawan thought that it was corny, like how people would try to impress others with flashy clothes and ended up looking like clowns.

Vand nodded at Terek’s warning, but remained with his neutral expression and with the lollipop at his mouth. When he saw Leo’s nervously staring at him and the Knight, the half-Nagai wondered why the other Padawan was acting this way. He had noticed that the other boy became nervous since they left the vehicle. The half-Nagai wondered why it happened.

In an attempt to calm Leon, Vand held the other Padawan’s hand. “It’ll be fine.” he whispered in his nonchalant tone, probably not helping as he had expected. Perhaps the physical contact would have a better effect, since the half-Nagai did it because he remembered from a book that people used to like this type of reassurance when having doubts or panicking.

Although the calm presence that he was trying to project through the Force toward Leon was probably more effective than a simple touch.

While he held Leon’s hand for only a few seconds, Vand was able to notice how the other boy was warm. The half-Nagai thought that the contrast with his own cold hand was intriguing, nice even. Probably it happened due to the low level of sugar that the pale boy had in his body.

Vand couldn’t think much about this contrast of cold and warm because they entered Sulfur's room shortly after he tried to comfort Leon. He was surprised with the fact that the businessman was a human rather than a Kon’me. The Padawan wondered if his books were incorrect and the indigenous inhabitants of Bal'demnic didn’t distrust outsiders. Although how he saw the guards stare at them, made the half-Nagai think that it wasn't the case.

What didn’t surprise him was the fact that Czerka was behind the recent conflicts in the planet. With the centuries old fame of ruthlessness that this company had, it was obvious that they would be assassinating people to have the rights over Cortosis. However, Vand couldn’t avoid having the feeling that there was something more behind all that.

Vand’s touch startled him at first. To be honest, it was a little awkward, but he could feel that the guy’s intent was kind, and once he got past his own insecurities gave Vandn’s hand a squeeze before letting it go. “Thanks again,” he whispered. He still felt nervous, but he didn’t feel like he was going to drown so that was a plus.

Beyaz just wanted them to clean up their trash. Of course. Leon shifted his weight to his other leg and shook a curl from his eyes. Terek was deep in thought and considered how to proceed. Leon was glad he wasn’t in charge. The pressure of leadership wasn’t something he wanted.

Terek cleared his throat, “We will investigate the attack, will you please take us to the settlement where the cargo trains leave from?

Delightful, I’m elated you’re willing to vanquish those rogues. The Jedi truly are stalwart protectors of justice.

Ordeen smiled flatly and gave a curt bow, “You honor us with your praise, hopefully, we can live up to it.

Beyaz and Ordeen finished up the logistics. The Jedi would be introduced to Sulfur’s chief of security and they would brief the Jedi on the attack. The same Kon’me and guards that escorted them to Beyaz, also lead them to their transport. To Leon’s surprise, Ordeen wasn’t a chump when it came to negotiation. He wasn’t shrewd or cunning, but he was blunt. He’d managed to secure housing and meals for the duration of their stay at as well as written confirmation that should their investigation lead to solving BelCort’s problem, Beyaz would open his mines for the Jedi at a rate to be determined at a later time.

His initial assumption that the knight was a slacker was starting to appear incorrect. The Trio would step bid farewell to the Kon’me dressed like a Coruscanti businessman and step into the transport which was piloted by a droid. The astromech whistled a greeting and Leon waved as he passed by. Terek lead them to the back corner of the ship. He waved his hand and suddenly all ambient sound dampened.

We can talk freely for a moment. Trusting Beyaz would be foolish until we get a chance to investigate the settlement. When we land, I want the two of you to check the place out and search for anything out of the ordinary. Trust the force to guide you, Padawans.

Leon nodded. The mission was finally about to get started.

Obviously, Terek agreed to help Sulfur. This was a good opportunity for them to win the trust of the locals and to do something that would protect innocent people. However, Vand was uncertain if it would be easy for them to oppose a corporation like Czerka. It was influential enough to make life difficult for the Jedi Order.

Once the Knight and the Businessman finished discussing details about this mission, the Jedi were presented to Sulfur’s security. Differently from their boss, they were also Kon’me. Vand was perplexed with the fact that all the workers were natives, while Sulfur was human. He never thought that a species famous for being distrustful would want to be employed by a foreigner.

I think that there is something else happening.” Vand whispered to Leon, while they followed Ordeen to their transport. He wasn’t going to say more about his suspicions, since they were surrounded by Sulfur’s men. However, the pale boy wanted the other Padawan to be prepared if something unexpected happened.

However, when the three Jedi were alone in the vehicle and Ordeen started to give his instructions, the Padawan saw that it was an opportunity to say more about his concerns regarding Beyaz. “It is very suspicious that the owner of the BalCort is a human, given how the Kon’me dislikes outsiders. We should give a look at Sulfur’s past, too.

Even if he was concerned with the Businessman's true motives, the half-Nagai also nodded in agreement to the instructions that Ordeen had given to him and Leon. Czerka was the real threat there and they needed to stop the corporation if they wanted to secure Bal'demnic support for the Jedi Order.

Giles Te’roc was a Kon’me that knew in order to survive one must adapt. His life here in the settlement of Chon’du had started rough, but an opportunity opened it’s arms to him and he’d embraced it like a long-lost friend. Even now the memory brought a smile to his face. When he’d been transferred to this settlement he’d had to leave everything behind. BalCort demanded it. Beyaz Demanded it. But, now, with the help of his new friends. He was going to make the benevolent Beyaz pay, for thinking an outlander could order around the Kon’me.

⌬⌬⌬

Leon nodded in agreement with Vand’s warning, “Yeah, something’s off.

He could feel it in the force. The Kon’me revered Beyaz like he was royalty. Maybe the Ore-duke title wasn’t some silly name they’d given the mine owners.

Copy that,” Responded Leon as Ordeen gave them orders. The Padawan appreciated Terek’s trust. Maybe more people than he realized knew he’d survived an encounter with a Sith master. Having an objective helped Leon’s nerves ease up a bit. Being able to focus on something rather than worrying about impending doom was a solid trade-off.

The transport set down in the mining settlement of Chon’du. As they stepped off the ship, they were greeted by a Kon’me, wearing a security uniform similar to the guards before except his chest was adorned by several multi-colored bars signaling his rank.

Welcome to Chon’du, I’m BalCort’s head of security, Giles Te’roc.

The shuttle landed in a mining settlement. While they walked out of it, Vand got a better view of his surroundings. The place was full of equipment used to extract the Cortosis from the ground. There were also several workers moving around the place, doing different functions. Some were operating the machines, others moved the already extracted ore inside containers.

However, what all of them had in common was that they were Kon’me. The half-Nagai didn’t see any individual of another species. It proved that the inhabitants of Bal’demnic still didn’t tolerate outsiders. It only made the Padawan even more suspicious of Sulfur, not being able to understand how the human was able to hold such a high position.

If there was something that the pale boy hated more than his full name was not understanding something. His logical mind couldn’t tolerate the concept of doubt and he needed to decipher this situation.

The Jedi were welcomed by Giles Te’roc, the Kon’me who was BalCort chief of security. “Hello! I’m Knight Tarek Ordeen and these Padawans are Leon Baudelaire and Vandirak Hastakor.” the half-Nagain groaned with the mention of his full name, but the older Jedi ignored him.

While Ordeen talked with the Kon’me, Vand discreetly approached Leon. “Did you notice how there isn’t any other outsider working at this mine?” he whispered, while gesturing with his head toward the workers. “If they don’t allow others to work in things like that, I can’t see how Czerka was even allowed to come to this planet without a full invasion.

“Look, they obviously dislike our presence here.” some of the workers had stopped what they were doing to stare at them. The half-Nagai could feel their disgust being redirected at them.

Leon nodded as Terek introduced them. He caught Vand’s recoil at hearing his name and wondered what that was about, but they didn’t have time to get into each other’s backstories right now. As the other guy whispered in his ear, Leon took a look around and noticed he was right, “I’ve seen people do some pretty terrible things for credits. I don’t think we should count Czerka out yet, but opening our search parameters would be wise.

Jedi Ordeen and Giles continued talking, Leon spotted a hand signal from Terek and he alerted Vand to it. It was time for them to strike out on their own. They’d’ have to do so casually, but as Giles began leading them toward the office building, Leon would slip down an alley created by enormous pieces of machinery.

He’d wait for Vand, “Alright, where do you think we should start? The local’s don’t look all that friendly.

Leon knew someone would be willing to help them, but he had no clue where to start. He was open to ideas, but if none came the only choice he’d have would be to trust the force. So far he’d never been disappointed when he’d just given into his training and listened to the Wind of Life.

He edged himself to the end of the alley. He was glad to be in his usual mission attire. Both Anton Vari’s lightsaber and the one he’d found on Christophsis hung from his utility belt, and his K-19 sat in it’s reverse holster. When it came to missions, Leon was always prepared. His past had taught him the importance of preparation and now he lived by it.

Leon peeked around the corner. A couple of Kon’me were chatting by a mining vent, but other than that— something out of his periphery caught his eye. Leon’s head snapped to the right, his senses on full alert. Something was close, but he didn’t know what it was. Over his shoulder, to Vand, he’d say, “Get ready, something’s coming.

Vand nodded, agreeing with what the other Padawan had said. While there was no signal of the company’s presence on the planet, they shouldn’t discard Czerka’s participation in what was happening in Bal’demnic. It only meant that they would need to be even more careful.

Like Leon, the half-Nagai also noticed the gesture that Ordeen had made. He would walk after the Knight, while he was led by Giles toward a building. However, as soon as he saw the other Padawan slip down an alley, Vand followed him. Thanks to the great number of machines around them, they weren’t going to be seen by the workers.

Since we can’t talk with the civilians, I believe that we should investigate the places where the conflicts happened.” if Czerka was involved in this Cortosis War, they needed to search for traces that could guide them to where the company was hiding. “While we do it, we could also see if we find anyone that is interested in helping us.

The half-Nagai would have given more advice about how they should proceed with the investigation, but Leon’s warning stopped him. Vand could feel the Force alerting him that something dangerous was coming, but the same machines that were hiding them from the workers, were also blocking his sight.

A loud sound was the only warning that the two Padawans would have, before one of the machines collided in full speed against another, making it fall over them. The only thing that Vand could do was grab Leon’s arm and pull him out of the way. Using the Force, the half-Nagai was able to increase his speed, allowing to escape from being crushed and helping the other boy in the process.

The scream of ripping and tearing durasteel announce in coming disaster as the alley they’d taken refuge in was slammed into by a loader droid. Leon felt his arm get yanked. He was thrown off balance and felt himself stumble under the sudden force-enhanced assist. His back leg slipped and he went down to a knee. He whirled around and pressed outward with the force managing to slow the impending crash of machinery long enough for them to make it out. Sirens cried out as the Kon’me standing around flew into chaos.

More than a few glances were flitting in their direction. Leon spotted a Kon’me talking to a guard point in their direction. To Vand he said, “We gotta split, we should dip into the mines. If anyone’s hiding anything, there’s a good chance its in there.

Before they could be detained, Leon would dip into the force and make a rush for the nearest alley. They couldn’t just let everyone see them disappear into the mine. If they did that they’d be trapped. Better to bail then sneak in than to be hunted fromt the start. Leon’s chest heaved, as he rounded a corner and slid to a stop. The sounds of sirens and forceful voices were out in the distance now. He peered around for an entrance to the mine.

I don’t think the falling machinery was an accident. Feels like someone doesn't want us sniffing around. What do you think, Vand?

While Vand’s fast thinking had saved their lives, it didn’t mean that he was graceful while doing it. He stumbled on his own legs and thanks to Leon going down on his knees, the half-Nagai ended up falling on the floor. Due to his use of the Force, the pale boy ended up skidding like an idiot on the ground.

The half-Nagai rose from the floor right on the time to see the other Padawan using the Force to delay the falling machine. Vand was grateful that Leon was here to help, if it wasn't for him they would have been crushed. It made the pale boy rethink the fact that he had contributed to save them, since he only fell on the floor. In the end, he was useless.

With that conclusion in his mind, Vand decided to train more with the Force when they returned to Ithor. Perhaps this way he could be more useful next time.

I agree.” Vand said, agreeing with the other Padawan. He saw how the Kon’mes were staring at them, now they weren’t hiding their anger anymore. The pale boy turned to look at the loader droid that had caused this accident and immediately thought that it was an act of sabotage.

He followed Leon toward the mines, being careful to avoid the Kon’me. Vand nodded in agreement after the other Padawan told his opinion. “It was an obvious attempt against our lives. I believe that it could even be an act of sabotage.” the sound of sirens was getting loud. “Do you think that they could be trying to incriminate us?

Leon’s brow furrowed in thought as he considered Vand’s words. To his surprise, he had a lot to consider. His experience against the Sith Master had opened his eyes to the lengths people could or would go in order to get what they want. Evil had many faces and he let himself wonder which one they’d be faced with.

I think it’s more complicated than that. Why try to kill us and then implicate us?” he wasn’t being mean, just thinking their situation out in earnest, “So, if they want us out of the picture, what are they trying to hide? ” his concentration soured as endless possibilities spiderwebbed out from the single thought. One question however remained constant, “Who are they trying to hide from? Beayz, or the Jedi?” he didn’t realize he was talking out loud for that last part and blushed a little when he looked up at Vand, “Er, sorry. Makes it easier to think,” he admitted.

I’ll send a message to Terek letting him know we’re still alive. He might have some advice on what to do next,” Leon pulled out his Nalphone and sent Ordeen a text, “While we wait, we should try and find a way into the mine that’s not super crowded?” he asked hitting send.

Leon slid his phone back into his pocket before realizing his message to Terek Ordeen didn’t go through.
