“I’m coming to believe that we must all interpret the Code for ourselves, or it ceases to be a living pact and becomes nothing but a prison cell.”
– Qui-Gon Jinn

Fiach knew the time would come. She knew from a point even before she had been Knighted and finally became able to call herself a Jedi. And it was not that she did not want to face the truth, but that – until this point – she was accountable for herself. And only herself. Sure, she undertook solo missions, but they were fleeting responsibilities. Today was the day when she would be held liable for the life of another. No, more than that, she was answerable for his development. Should he stray from the path – she would be looked at first. Should he fail to become a Knight – she would be considered at fault.

But it was a role she was not going to shy away from nor fail to embrace. Today was the day she would take her first ever Padawan. It was slightly awkward that she already knew him. Or maybe that was a positive? She shrugged her shoulders and then realised what she was doing and straightened them. Glancing around, she wondered if anyone had seen her innermost thoughts spilling out into visible body language.

She was sitting on a bench, near the Jedi Academy on Ajan Kloss. She wore her usual robes and her left hand went to the back of her head, to the spot where her Padawan braid was until so recently. She smiled and placed her hands on her lap and closed her eyes, meditating and awaiting the arrival of the person she would soon be required to monitor training and overall development.

It was one thing to have the group training all Jedi Padawan got but there was some thing important about the Padawan master relationship. it was as old as the order it self it seemed. Or at least as old as what Delnor could read about. So even though age difference between him and his new master was not that big Delnor was happy to finally to have a master. Not mention Delnor joined the order in his late teens meaning when it came to being a Jedi he was very new.

Walking through the Jedi Academy Delnor felt his lightsaber against his thigh. He was used to carrying his blaster pistol there but in the academy there was no need to carry his blaster or keep his lightsaber hidden. He all so wore simple Jedi robes and not the more rugged armored clothing he wore off world.

leaving the academy proper Delnor walked to the meeting point he was given to finally meet his master. He spotted her in light meditation she was not some one Delnor did not know, far from it Delnor knew her before she became a Jedi Knight though it was at the end of her time as a Padawan. Stopping some distance away Delnor waited, he knew she would sensed his arrival and there was no need to interrupt her meditation.

Fiach was still amazed by the Force – even after all of her training. Some days it was easy to take it for granted – in fact one lesson taught was how the Force was not the answer to every question. But it was certainly versatile and not to even be underestimated. What also intrigued her was how her capacity to use the Force was growing. She could access it for longer and with greater control and deeper – far more than when she’d first arrived. She knew this was typical, but none the less, she enjoyed musing on the fact.

She sensed Delnor’s approach as a ripple in the Force. Maybe one day, she’d sense him from an even greater distance and know instantly it was him – this was something that commonly occurred with Masters and Padawans (as it had done with her and her Masters).

And reflecting on them, she opened her eyes, her ubiquitous smile present on her lips. She stood and gave a short formal bow. It was customary for her when meeting someone for the first time, or if the occasion felt formal. And the first interaction in their new relationship felt like the latter to Fiach.

“Hello,” she said and indicated Delnor should sit beside her as she retook her seat on the bench. “Of course we know each other, but I suspect only superficially. So, before any talk of training or missions, I thought it prudent to learn a little more about our backgrounds and our aspirations. And maybe set some ground rules. This is a partnership of course, so they go both ways.”

“So,”
she concluded, “you go first, and tell me a little about yourself. Your background and how you came to be here…that sort of thing.”

Delnor assumptions where correct and his new master opened her eyes. As she indicated for him to take a seat Delnor moved in and sat down next to her.

They where correct that they only some what knew each other and that as Master and apprentice they would become very close to each other. It was there for a good idea to work out the ground rules and learn more about each other.

"While master, I was born on Pantoora my kinds home world. It is located in the outer rim but is very much in the Republic. I come from a some what well off family. The Jedi order picked up that i was force sensitive at my birth but I stayed on Pantoora for most of my life. I studied in a private school and spent a lot of time being a just a kid. I enjoyed the out doors and sport. I left my family a few years ago after i started to have visions. The force was showing me things at that point I was sent to join the order."

"I am still in contact with my family but and they a big supports of the Jedi order. I have done most of basic Jedi training and I can all so fly and have a fare bit of out door skills."

Fiach listened and, not for the first time, mused how once upon a time she saw herself as typical. She almost expected everyone’s upbringing to be like hers. Except they weren’t. Everyone had a unique story – and Delnor was no exception.

“Well,” she replied as he finished, “my life was somewhat different. I was raised as an orphan by a same-sex Klatooinian couple. My fathers were shunned by society already, so raising a human as their child wasn’t such a big issue for them. They owned a repair shop, where I worked from a young age. We always had just enough money to exist – but never any spare. Not that I minded, I wanted for nothing. And, again unlike you, I was not discovered as Force sensitive until my teens, when I happened across a Jedi who became my Master. Sadly, she disappeared on a mission and I was taken on by Master Oren. He guided me through my trials and here I am, a Knight.”

“So, next on my informal agenda is training. You've hinted at what you're good at, so where should we focus any development?”

Delnor had to think. He was smart enough to under stand the two trains of thought with the training. Either double down and learn skills he was good at or cover a broad area and learn as much. But seeing how Delnor was new to being a Jedi the best bit choice was to learn as much as he could to find out what he was actually good at in the first place.

"I am not sure where to start master but I think some kind of training to find my limits. I am ok with my academic studies so I think either learning a greater under standing in the force and Light saber combat since I only have the basics of light saber combat. As for non Jedi skills I would like to learn some mechanical skills"

Fiach listened to Delnor and once he had finished she nodded and raised her hands in front of her. “There are two things I want to share. The first is about limits,” she counted them off on her fingers, “and the second is about time.”

“Someone explained the Force to me in a very pragmatic way, and it has stuck, so I want to share it. The Force is infinite,”
she waved her hands expansively as if to illustrate. “But your access to it is like a box.” Now she mimed the outline of a small box. “You can only access so much in a given day and to a given strength. In time, the box grows and so you can access more and with greater intensity. Knowing the size of this box is good, as you can ensure you don’t weaken at just the wrong time. It should also be a reminder not to use the Force to answer every problem, but to expend it judiciously.”

“The second point is that we all have the same number of hours in a day. You need to decide if you want to be a true generalist – which means only so much time to allocate to each one – or a specialist in a narrower set of skills. So, more time to develop a greater level of mastery, but fewer Force abilities to call upon.”

“And I agree that lightsaber combat is a given. Plus, you might want to dabble in many to see what is a natural strength, but remember that time invested trumps innate ability every time. I am not naturally adept with the lightsaber, but I practice as long as anyone at the Order, if not more than most. This has taken me beyond the skill level of others who clearly outshone me in my early days.”

“So, what mechanical skills would you like to learn?”

Sorry for the delay my PC was broken only got it back today

The was the force and the limits of a person has to using the force made a lot of sense. It was easy to see in his head how a box would fill up though Delnor did not know his own breaking point and that could be bad. He had never trained hard enough that he had to push him self to the edge. Most of his training had all so been in the use of the force that id not fill the box like meditation and feeling the living force letting it guide him. "I take it is best to know your limits by training to the point you reach your limit rather than finding your limit in battle"

For now Delnor saw no need to focus his training. Since even if you specialize in a field it is best to have a broader under standing of the force as one could and the same went for lightsaber combat. Though has his master had said one should not rely on the force alone.

"While master i own a a ship. My parents gave it to me with a droid. And i feel it makes sense that i should learn hoe to look after it in the field."

Fiach smiled as she almost sensed Delnor’s thoughts. In truth, it was little more than deductive reasoning. She suspected what was going through his mind is what went through every Padawan’s mind when the subject was raised. “You’re probably wondering how big your personal box is? Everyone does. Does it make sense to push yourself to the limit every know and then to find out?” She nodded. “I can be a hard task-master. If you wish to truly learn the ways of a Jedi, you must be prepared to make sacrifices. Training will be hard. Training must emulate real life. A Sith will not wait for you to recover before attacking , or change into something more comfortable before duelling. So, expect me to wake you at any time of the night for training – or expect you to go for a run in full gear.”

“But back to the present. I am good with repairing things and I’m currently building – or rather re-building – a light freighter for my use. What better way to learn how to look after one? Oh, and what sort of droid do you have?”

Delnor nodded as his new master spoke. What she said was true for every one and even more true for a Jedi. A fight can break out at any time and a emergency can occur any where. "Understood master. I will be ready for what ever task is required of me at any time"

The idea of building a star ship from the group up did seem like a very good way to learn how to keep one going. "I would happy to help you build your light freighter." Delnor suspected her master was better at mechanics than she was letting on and new he could learn a lot from her. "I own a old legacy R2 unit master. He is a very loyal droid if some what independent"

Fiach smiled as Delnor spoke. “I tend to spend an hour or so each day in the hangar, so feel free to drop by and help out. A lot of the skills are transferable. You’ve got electronic work and mechanical work. Ships are a combination. A droid, on the other hand, is mostly electronic.”

“And I built an R2 unit from scratch, or at least from a whole number of different parts that came from many different units. I keep meaning to give him a designation – I don’t think I can continue to call him, ‘the R2 unit’ indefinitely. What do you think? In fact what do you think about giving inanimate objects names? I have given my ships names – and initially I thought it odd, but I’ve grown used to it. I should mention, I also have a TIE-fighter – a gift from a fellow Padawan when I first arrived.”

"Thank you master i will be sure to try and come around to help you with your project and learn some more. I would like to be able to build my own droid at some point"

Delnor never really thought about the naming of things. He allways gave them names. D4 was named from the shop but it was his name and the Birkenhead was a name Delnor picked since it was named after a long gone ship that crashed on Pantoraan. But after some thought Delnor understood why he gave names. "Names are important. Names give meaning, purpose and identity. If we did not name droids and ships where do we stop. Do we stop naming cities, do we stop naming planets. I named my ship and droid and because they have meaning to me."

Fiach nodded. “Learning is as much about experimenting and doing things your way as following someone else. That’s how I learned most of what I know about fixing things. Trial and error. Less useful when it comes to building a spaceship, but constructing a droid? Definitely viable – and there’s a lot of information on datacrons to work with to.”

And she cocked her head to one side as she listened to Delnor’s explanation of naming conventions. She nodded and smiled. “Your perspective is one I never considered myself and it makes so much sense. If planets and cities – which are inanimate – deserve them, then my R2 unit definitely does. But rather than naming him, I think I’ll ask him if he has a name already. What do you think of that?”

“And in terms of next steps, I have a mission coming up and would like you to accompany me. Is that acceptable to you?”

trail and error was a good way to learn though depending on your task the error could be fatal. So Delnor would take the time to learn first.

The idea about asking the droid what name it wanted was not odd though Delnor suspected it would use it serial code "Asking it for its name may give may just give you it serial number. Unless it has gone some time with out it memories being wiped so it could build a personalty"

the chance to go on a mission was all ways something that made Delnor perk up. "I would love to join you on a mission a master. When do we leave, are we going far, is there any thing i should bring with" After rattling off Delnor smiled brightly

“Trust me, the droid has quite a personality, and if it wants to be known simply by its designated serial number, so be it. Similarly, if it wants to be known as Frank or Bantha, I shall oblige.”

Fiach smiled and stood. “Thank you for joining me here, it has been a very informative meeting. As I shall say often, it is your path you walk along. I have journeyed along a similar one before and so can give counsel, but ultimately the decisions you make are yours. So, allow me to organise a mission and I’ll brief you on what you need once it’s finalised. All I usually expect anyone to bring, is an open mind.”
