DESCRIPTION
The B/SF-17 StarFortress heavy starbomber is a relic of the Galactic Civil War. Developed by a joint venture of Slayn & Korpil and Subpro, it was meant to equip New Republic strategic bombing forces, which were used to pound besieged Imperial holdouts into surrender during the closing days of the war. After the Battle of Jakku, however, and the subsequent demilitarization of the New Republic, most StarFortresses then in inventory were retired, either sold off or scrapped. They type would see good service on the civilian market, being used by mining companies to drop demolition charges to break up ore-rich asteroids, and by specialty cargo firms in various freighter configurations, although it would again see use as a bomber during the First Order-Resistance War.

The B/SF-17 was among the most powerful heavy starbombers ever made, with a nearly unmatched payload capacity of 1,000 proton bombs or similar munitions deployed from magnetically accelerated internal bomb racks. This extremely high capacity did come at a cost, however; the StarFortress was slow and lumbering, with only 65 MGLT for top speed and sluggish maneuvering characteristics. Despite 6 forward-firing medium laser cannons and 3 dual light laser turrets, plus a medium deflector screen, the heavy starbomber was easy meat for most starfighters, requiring a strong escort or uncontested aerospace superiority in order to make it to its target safely. Once over the target, however, the StarFortress could rain destruction, its massive payload comparable to a sustained turbolaser bombardment in terms of firepower. A single StarFortress was capable of destroying a star dreadnought if it could put its bombs on the correct target.

Unfortunately for the StarFortress, its weaknesses as a military craft have kept it from achieving the notoriety it deserves. Meant to be deployed in massive formations protected by escort fighters and interlocking fields of defensive fire, it was only briefly used in this way by the New Republic. Later action with the Resistance saw the type used improperly, with only small squadrons deployed against a well defended targets. As a result, the type suffered heavy losses in Resistance service, although it was still responsible for a number of important victories.

In the present day, heavy strategic bombers such as the StarFortress are rarely used, being seen as an excessive investment of resources in a vulnerable weapons platform. Nevertheless, in ideal conditions, a heavy starbomber can wreak untold destruction, and is still a feared weapon of war.
