DESCRIPTION
Astromech droids have been friends to pilots and other spacers for millennia, repairing and maintaining ships, sometimes in flight, acting as co-pilots and even as friends. In recent centuries, astromechs have taken a new role into their considerable repertoire. Thanks to advances made in the decades before the Clone Wars, astromech droids can replace the functionality of a ship's navicomputer, allowing ships which were previously too small to carry both a droid and a specialized astrogation system to combine the two roles into one.

Astromech droids can interface with a starship using a direct computer link. This can be as simple as a droid sticking its I/O plug in an interface jack, but often a more physically secure method is preferred. Astromech sockets partially enclose a droid, locking them into place. In doing so, their connection to a ship's systems becomes less susceptible to physical jostling resulting from turbulence and hard maneuvers. Astromech sockets are incorporated as standard into many ship designs, especially small starfighters, and are more or less trivial to set up using available components as well. Especially if a vessel is equipped with a hyperdrive but lacks a dedicated navicomputer, an astromech may be necessary to jump to hyperspace, and a droid socket is a handy piece of equipment to have around for this reason. Although astromech sockets are typically installed on the exterior of a ship, they can be placed anywhere aboard a vessel, including inside a cockpit or engine room.

Astromech droid sockets are a useful modification for a starship, but they are not without cost. Generally, a droid socket provides a high level of integration between a droid and various shipboard systems, but ships fitted with a droid socket require an astromech droid to be present in the socket in order to function. The socket can be overridden or jury-rigged in the event the astromech is missing or destroyed, but ships flying in this state take a hit to general reliability. Within 4 posting rounds, a major system of some kind on the ship will fail and must be reset, which takes up 1 round.

Any astromech socket-equipped vessel lacking an astromech droid is completely unable to perform hyperspace jumps, overrides or no.

LEGALITY
Legal. Not being an offensive weapon, installation of an astromech socket is unrestricted in most of the Galaxy.

INTENT
To create an astrogation upgrade for starships.
