DESCRIPTION
The Aggressive ReConnaissance-170, better known as the ARC-170, is a multi-role heavy starfighter manufactured by a joint venture of the Incom and Subpro corporations for the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Designed for the frenetic, high-density fleet battles that characterized the conflict, the ARC-170 was the embodiment of the Republic's "slow and sturdy" design philosophy, which emphasized well-protected, hard-hitting ships. By contrast, other Republic starfighters such as the V-19 Torrent and V-Wing were light and fast, but poorly armed and protected, not much better than the CIS droid starfighters they opposed, which had resulted in heavy losses of clone pilots earlier in the war. The ARC-170 was designed, by contrast, as a hammer rather than a scalpel, able to power through the dense swarms of enemy fighters with superior firepower and protection.

In this ambition, the ARC-170 succeeded. One of the most heavily armed and best outfitted Republic starfighters of the war, it had a crew of 3 clones - a pilot, a sensor operator and a tail gunner - plus an astromech droid for in-flight repairs and hyperspace calculations. Weapons consisted of two heavy laser cannons on the wingtips, each with a coaxial medium cannon, plus a pair of turreted light laser cannons in the rear, allowing it to shoot down pursuing craft with ease. Also present was a torpedo launcher with an 8-shot capacity, giving the ARC-170 a decent punch against capital ships and ground targets.

Notably, the ARC-170 had an early example of the "strike foil" system which would become an Incom staple. In combat, the ship's 2 wings would split into 6, giving better thermal performance and increasing overall efficiency.

Of course, the ARC-170 was not merely notable for its weaponry. The fighter was equipped with a medium shield, a rarity for any craft of its size during its time, as well as a class 1.5 hyperdrive, granting it excellent range and mobility. Though maneuverability was only average, the ship's speed was a match for most snubfighters even into the present day, able to reach 100 MGLT.

Overall, the ARC-170 was and is a formidable ship, albeit with some drawbacks in terms of maneuverability and crew size. It was used by the Republic as an escort fighter due to its long range, as well as in the aerospace superiority and light bombing roles. It served with distinction through to the end of the Clone Wars, and remained in Imperial inventory even afterward for a time. Unfortunately, the type did not mesh well with later Imperial starfighter doctrine, and was quickly retired along with many other Clone Wars-era designs shortly after the advent of the TIE series. They were passed on to military surplus yards or scrapped, and a few even managed to make it into Rebel hands, although their relatively large crew compliment and obsolete systems meant that they were largely retired even from this role after the new X-Wing starfighter - its direct successor - became available in sufficient numbers.

These days, ARC-170s in flyable condition are rare to find, and the type has largely been relegated to the Galaxy's private collections and scrap heaps.

LEGALITY
Restricted. The ARC-170 is a starfighter, and is subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create an antique starfighter from the Prequels to add to the site's fanon.
