Dac had really turned to crap. Not that she had been here before, but it couldn't have been like this before. Toxic water, crime and chaos in the streets, lack of food and medical supplies. It almost felt like home and in the worst possible way.

She'd been contracted to run a shipment of relief supplies into the system and the delivery had been made without a hitch. But while she was here on legitimate business, she seen a perfect opportunity to take a side deal. In the crime that ran rampant through this area, someone had stolen old industrial secrets, schematics for something ship related. Shields or weapons, maybe? To be honest, she hadn't really asked questions because that wasn't how this business worked. She'd been hired to pick up a datachip and deliver it back to Hutt space.

Now it was just a matter of making it through the scummy portions of town and pick up the goods. Easy enough, right?

Walking along the sidewalk, it struck her just how interesting this planet had become. Governments that typically warred with one another were all here under a seemingly delicate peace accord. Not that it made much difference to her. An FWA trooper and an Imperial trooper could both be a pain and a Sith was as likely as a Jedi to get in her way these days. She just kept her horns down and would get in and out of here as quickly as she could.

The devastation on Mon Cala was worse than he'd expected. Since his arrival with Mordeth a few days ago, Crix had taken to walking the streets. When it came to dispersing spice it was easy to find the locations it would sell fastest, you just had to follow the desperation.

Dac City was on the mend. It seemed like the relief supplies being shuttled in were doing their work, but the open wounds left by the Za Fenn were still there. Crix hated what he was doing. He hated that he was a drug peddler for a Hutt. The fact that he had to masquerade about with an alias infuriated him. Maybe it was time to just let it all go...

Crix had decided to be himself for a change and he found himself struggling to let go of the jaded cynic he became as Damon Kross. He lit up a cigarette and took a breath. These things would kill him someday and on days like today, he hoped it would be sooner rather than later.

Mon Calamari had become a melting pot of bleeding hearts in the galaxy. It was the best PR any organization or empire could ask for and the number of factions profiting off of the false altruistic aid was disgusting, but the silver lining was: People were being helped.

His Holocom buzzed in his pocket. He activated it and a surly trandoshan flickered into life.

"Hey kid, you still on Dac?"

"Where?"

"Mon Cala, you moron."

Crix sighed, "Yup, why?"

"Can I get you to do me a solid?"

He rolled his eyes, "Anything for my business partner, what is it?"

The Trandoshan chuckled, "I need you to meet a contact in an area called The Spills. They've got a datapad for me. Mind picking it up?"

Crix shrugged, "Fine."

"Thanks. Keep your head on a swivel The Spills was rough before the attack. Now it's... well you'll see."

"Thanks for the heads up. I'll touch base once I've run your errand," Crix cut the transmission and made his way toward the wrong side of town.

Terra glanced down at her datapad as she headed down the street, making sure it was the right direction to the point of her contact. "The Spills" as it was called these days was reputed to be a terrible place, and as she turned several more corners, the streets became more and more rough.

Oh great, it's going to be another one of these areas, she thought, slipping her datapad away so that she could keep her eyes up. Alert, watching, and ready in case things got bad.

Several more twists and turns and she arrived at the fueling station. It was bustling with people filling up their speeders and it was the alleged location that she was supposed to meet her contact.

Unfortunately, she didn't know who her contact was and that meant poking around to look for someone who looked out of place.

She headed inside, grabbing a can of Red Rancor and slapping some credits on the counter.

Looks busy out there today. Surprised you've still got fuel supplies right now, she said to the cashier, glancing around for anyone who looked like they might be just... loitering about. Or anyone who might know to contact her. Sometimes these sorts of operations weren't run smoothly or by geniuses she'd learned.

As Crix entered The Spills he noticed a handful of kids moving in that tried and true way. They were a gang. No doubt run by some abusive parental figure. Luckily, for The Scoundrel, most kids weren't dumb enough to try and pickpocket someone with a pair of blasters on their hips.

His datapad buzzed and he glanced down at the coordinates Barlo sent. They led to a local filling station and upon discovering he was out of cigarettes decided this was the force at work. A few minutes later and he was inside the store. He could see they sold Corellian Spirits and that's all he needed. He kept his eyes open for anyone that might be looking for him when he noticed the Tiefling in front of him seemed to be doing the same thing.

She bought an energy drink and commented about the bustle of the store which only now did Crix register. It was a little odd that out of all the places in The Spills this was the one establishment that had plenty of customers. He shook it off as he approached the counter.

"Pack of blue Corellian spirits, please."

Then decided to try his luck, "And a datapad for Barlo Drussk?"

All he got were the cigarettes and a blank stare. Okay, so that would've been way too easy. Then he remembered the woman in front of him. He quickly scanned the area and spotted her.

"You wouldn't be trying to make a delivery would you?"

Drussk? Her mind immediately zeroed in on the name. It was the person she'd been in contact with about the job in the first place. No way that was a coincidence.

She stepped out of line, popping the can and taking a long swig before letting out a satisfied sigh. Just in time for him to exit the line as well and head outside away from more prying ears.

Though she frowned at his question. Pick up. At least I was told pick up, she said, her face going from frown to an even tighter frown as realization set in.

Nah, man, this had better not be one of those "you have to 'obtain' the delivery yourself first jobs," she said, all too familiar with how those could go. That was what she had a sinking feeling of. Whether fluffy hair here was in on it or not was up in the air. Probably not.

I take it you're not Drussk, then, she said, wanting to cross her arms but unable to do so because of her drink. Well, she was crossing her arms in her head!

The woman's frown tightened as she admitted she'd also been looking to pick up. Crix's brow's nit together and he scanned the filling station once more. No big deal if he'd simply picked the wrong mark. The bustle of the station started making sense. He spotted a hand-off as a guy was filling a speeder. Another between two beings as they passed each other in the entry of the store. This was a hub, it wasn't just a filling station.

Crix began to notice eyes on them. As he brought his attention back to the tiefling he raised his hands apologetically, "Oh my mistake!"

In a hushed tone, he said, "I'm not sure what's up with the job, but we're drawing attention."

He scanned the locale and spotted a diner across the street.

"I'm not Durssk, but he a good friend of mine. Why don't we compare notes at the diner over there? Might make both of our lives easier."

While waiting for her answer, he pulled out of his Holo and hailed Barlo, but the bastard didn't pick up.

What in the hell is going on?

Her mouth twisted up slightly in confusion. She didn't get the feeling that things were "off" but it was just the kind of thing that happened sometimes. People made mistakes, orders got mixed up, and as long as the credits came that was what mattered.

Yeah, sounds like a good idea, she agreed with a nod, glancing around in much the same manner she did. It was a side effect of their line of business, it seemed.

She headed in the direction of said diner, sliding into one of the seats as she pushed her way inside. The place looked barely cleaned, but at least it didn't stink of sewage like the outdoors did.

Alright, so you're not Drussk, but you work with him, right? she asked, keeping her voice down as she looked at the menu.

I was just supposed to pick something up for him and transport it. I'm guessing you don't have it, then? she asked.

Crix followed her into the diner. The dive was dirty, but by the smells wafting from the kitchen, the meal was going to be killer. It had been forever since he'd had authentic Mon Cal cuisine and he immediately had his eye on the shrimp and grits. The Tiefling got right to business and he appreciated that.

Keeping his eyes on the menu he responded, "Correct, names... names Crix."

He had chosen not to give his alias, granted his hesitation would have either made him seem stupid or a liar, but to him, all that mattered was he was doing this job as himself and not as Damon.

"To clarify, Barlo Drussk and I are partners."

He frowned when she said she was picking up something for Drussk. Was this a case of mistaken identity, or did Barlo really have two people picking up different things for him?

"I'm just gonna be honest about this, I'm supposed to pick up a—"

As he spoke the waitress walked up and he abruptly stopped talking as she gave them the rundown on the day's specials.

Crix stuck with his initial choice and ordered the Shrimp and Grits. He couldn't believe how excited he was about this. He almost didn't care that he'd been asked to do something without being given all of the information to accomplish the task. Once his acquaintance ordered and the waitress walked away he'd resume what he was saying.

"Anyway, I was supposed to pick up a datapad. What about you?"

Terra didn't like when things turned out this way. Jobs like this were always a mess and usually that mess ended up in her lap. She'd just learned to make sure she wasn't the one holding the bag when everything came to a stop.

He gave his name with only a moment's hesitation and she, too, paused a moment to consider. Name's Terra, she said. In the galaxy there were what, millions of people with that name. It alone wasn't enough to be a huge danger to her.

The waitress popped by and Terra glanced down at the menu, quickly scanning for something she wouldn't mind.

Chowder in a bread bowl, she said, sliding the menu back to the woman before she left.

Same. Well, datachip, but same idea. With... sensitive corporate data, she said, letting on a bit more. What if this guy was some kind of cop? But that didn't make sense, right?

So if you don't have it, and I don't have it, and we don't have a name for who has it... she said, frowning. If worst came to worst, she hadn't flown across the galaxy to be cheated out of a job at least. But credits were slim right now, and she needed this job. Maybe there was still a way to salvage it.

Look, if you're Drussk's partner, am I still getting paid? she asked skeptically, though it didn't sound like Drussk kept him very well informed either.

"Pleasure to meet you Terra."

Crix's brow furrowed in concentration as he considered what she'd said. What in the hell would Barlo want or need with a datachip filled with corporate information?

The Scoundrel chewed on the inside of his lip as his mind started to run with the information. Then he stopped it. That was Damon. Damon didn't trust people, Damon saw daggers behind every corner. Crix had come up through the dregs of the underworld with Barlo. Aside from maybe Karina, there was no one else he trusted more in the Galaxy.

Terra began to wonder about her pay just as Crix began to question her employer.

"If you were hired by Barlo Drussk, you'll be paid."

His answer wasn't said unkindly, he'd been in her shoes more times than he could count during the five years he'd spent building his network.

Crix pulled out his comm and tried hailing Barlo again.

Again nothing.

The chime above the door heralded the arrival of a group of roughnecks. At a glance, Crix spotted a Black Sun insignia and quickly returned his attention to their table.

One of them said, "Well, well, ain't the lady with the horns pretty."

Another, "Keep it in your pants Darvo, we're here for the boss's money."

Darvo replied, "I'll keeps it where I wants it, Zarrc."

In the mirror behind the bar, Crix could see that Darvo was a Weequay and that Zarrac was a human. Between the two he decided Zarrc was the "leader" of their little gang. The other two members a Gotal and Iakaru seemed bored with the proceedings, but the weapons hanging around their necks told him they weren't here to mess around.

Darvo piped up again.

"Pretty lady wanna spend some time with a real man?"

He sauntered over with the swagger of a swindler, heavy blaster in a reverse holster on his hip. He reached the side of their table. During his approach, Crix had eased his DG-29 out of it's holster and held it under the table. His eyes flicked to Terra's he wasn't sure what she was going to do, but if things went bad he'd be ready to make a move.

Alright, she grumbled. She'd have to take his word for it for now. So what's the next step, then? You seem to know more about this than me, she said, which she hated. In fact, she was starting to think she should just toss this job altogether and walk away. It was getting messy, and she didn't like messy.

Look, you and your partner can sort this out, I'm... but before she could finish the sentence, she heard the degenerate approaching.

Her hand fell to the booth next to her, fingers dancing momentarily against the handle of her blaster.

Yeah, if you meet one, let me know, she said without missing a beat. She had never decided wether being spat at and called a demon or the provocative comments were worse. Probably scum like this because she knew how these types of men could be.

Now, do you mind? We're a little busy here and you should probably listen to your boss over there, she said, face twisting up into a scowl. She recognized all too well the way that Crix was sitting as well, but she didn't have high hopes that he'd back her up if this went sideways. Though, he was sitting with her so he might be dragged in whether he wanted to be or not.

Guilt by association was the crux of back alley investigation. Sitting at the same booth as Terra meant they were together and there would be no dispute. It would be them versus the thugs. Crix sat with a smug grin plastered across his face. This moron had no idea who he was getting ready to fuck with and that was precisely how The Scoundrel liked it.

He chuckled in response to Terra's quip drawing the ire of the Weequay. Before the thug could say anything more she shut him down further. Crix's smile spread into a full-blown smile. His buddies snickered and the one called Zarrc called out, "You done? She's obviously not buying it."

Davro grunted then spun away. He took a couple of steps away. Zarrc's eyes gave the next moment away just in time. Crix pulled his gun, set to stun, and fired as Davro spun clutching a heavy blaster. Crix pulled his second weapon an RSFK-44.

"Pick up your guy and get the hell out of here, or die. Your move."

Tension seeped into the space between them and the gang of thugs. This would either wrap up without bloodshed or end in smoking holes. Either was fine with him.

Terra really hadn't wanted to start a fight with some gang tonight, but that seemed like how it was going to go tonight. She didn't see what had happened with the Weequay, but she did see Crix draw and fire.

Without looking back, she dove further into the booth, pulling her own pistol out and swinging over the back of her seat, pistol leveled. In contrast, her gun was not set to stun, and now they were all very, very angry looking.

As much as Zarrc seemed like a level-headed lead, she knew how these things worked. A gang like that would lose all credibility if they just picked up and walked away.

It was probably only two or three seconds, but it seemed like it stretched on for an eternity. Her heart was absolutely pounding and she clutched her blaster tightly, aiming down at the Gotal. Then she saw a twitch and everything hit the fan.

The Iakar went for his blaster and she squeezed the trigger. She wasn't even sure how many times for that matter, but it was enough to send the Gotal diving for cover of his own. Rather than stick around and shoot it out, she ducked low enough to avoid being shot by Crix and half-dove, half-scooted toward the back door.

More blaster bolts flashed back and forth and she was pretty sure at least one of hers struck someone in a shoulder before she managed to slam into the rear door, opening into an alley. And now they had the Black Sun after them. If they weren't working together before, they certainly were now.

She swore very loudly as she started to sprint down the back alley. We need to get out of here now. Off world. Totally out of their territory. Craaaaaaaaap. Crap, crap, crap.

The seconds elongated like stars just before the conflagration of hyperspace. Crix had both weapons up and leveled, the DG had been switched from stun to kill. Zarrc was frozen in place by the war in his mind. Avenge his fallen brother or walk away like a chump. The Black Sun were known for their brutality so that only left one option.

Blaster fire erupted. Bolts flashed and slammed into furniture, lights, walls, booths. A napkin holder on their table blew it's lid and sent a cascade of smoldering paper into the air. Crix downed Zarrc first. The man had panicked and it cost him his life. After that, he hit the Ikanar in the shoulder. The total dove for cover and out of the corner of his eye he saw Terra make a run for it.

See the odds shift in their favor made the thugs bold. Knowing he was outnumbered, Crix followed behind Terra and swore as a bolt she blindly fired slammed into his shoulder. He dropped his DG, but kept moving he could replace the gun, but he couldn't replace his life. He burst through the door behind her, slamming it in place and blowing the lock panel.

"What the fuck?! We had them!!"

Pain shot down his shoulder and he clutched it gritting his teeth.

"And you SHOT ME!"

He reached into his utility belt and applied some bacta cream. It'd numb the pain, but if he expected to avoid nerve damage he'd need a medical droid.

"Hey! Hey—" he snapped the fingers on his good hand in her face trying to get her to calm down.

"Listen to me. Get a hold of yourself. Black Sun isn't what they used to be, they're punks. Those guys in there were debt collectors, not guns, not mercs!"

He pulled his holo and hailed Barlo for the third time.

Nothing.

Crix kicked a garbage can furiously and shoved his comm back into his belt. He stormed off towards the end of the alley RSFK-44 still in hand.

Over his shoulder, he called out, "Forget the job, I'll cover your lost wages, let's get out of here, alive, shall we?"

I did not shoot you! she shouted. She hadn't been firing that wildly. He was mistaken in the chaos of combat, she was convinced. She had still been aiming.

She hadn't shot him, right? No, no she hadn't. Definitely not.

Look, I don't do gunfights, she said. In truth, this wasn't her first, but she clearly still hadn't adjusted after the two prior... incidents. She didn't even have to work to shove those thoughts aside because they were quickly flooded by new thoughts about how they needed to get out of here.

He stormed off down the alley, declaring that the Black Sun weren't what they used to be, but she wasn't sure she was buying that. And then he still offered to cover her wages! See, she hadn't shot him! He wouldn't have offered that if she'd shot him, right?!

I didn't really shoot you, did I? she asked after a moment, running to catch up with him. If he looked, he would see that her tail was now twitching quite quickly, the anxiety seeming to make its way there in a way that perhaps helped her handle herself without quite as much panic.

One hand was still wrapped around her pistol while the other had begun to shake from the adrenaline.

Look, my ship's not that far, we can patch up there and get off-world or to your ship or whatever, she said, glancing back to see if anyone had followed out the door. Fortunately, with at least one of the two upright people wounded, they didn't seem eager to pursue yet.

Crix whirled, sharply pointed at her, and exclaimed, "I was hit from the front and I was following you!"

In his fury, he neglected to immediately notice the fear and anxiety playing all over Terra's body. His eyes widened and shame colored his expression. He took a breath calming himself pinching the bridge of his nose with his good hand.

"I'm sorry."

He'd been in too many shootouts to count at this point, and he'd forgotten how terrifying they could be. The razor's edge of life and death determined over a toss of the dice. It didn't matter how good you were, how much you trained, or how good your armor was. Luck, and only luck, was the ultimate deciding factor in a fight to the death.

Embarrassed by his outburst, but still aware of the danger they were in he said, "Where's your ship,"

Even as he spoke he took point. Leaning against the corner of the alley carefully peeking around the corner.

Clear.

To Terra he said, "Give me a lift to New Coral City and I'll wire you the credits owed."

He wasn't sure why he suddenly felt responsible for the woman, but the fear she'd displayed meant she wasn't like him. She was just a pilot trying to make a little extra scratch.

Before rounding the corner he said, "Stay close and for the love of the stars, don't shoot me."

She felt incredibly guilty when she realized she probably had shot him. But it was his fault for running into her line of fire, right? That was what she was telling herself at least, but she had still shot him.

And he was being way too nice to her for that fact. There was no way he should be this nice to her if she'd nearly just killed him. A few inches one way and it would have been a very different story. She forced the thought out before she went ahead and had some sort of a panic attack.

It's not far. Docking Bay 251, she said. He was the type to probably know where that was.

She followed after him as he peered around the corner and started to wonder how she'd gotten herself into this. If those Black Sun goons could have just kept to themselves.

I... I won't, she said more meekly than she intended, assuring him she would not shoot him again.

She followed as they rounded the corner, fortunately her ship was in the opposite direction of the diner, and these thugs didn't seem like the type to be able to organize a thorough search of the streets quickly.

They walked along fairly quickly before she finally blurted out her question.

Why are you helping me so much? she asked. People didn't do that. People weren't nice to each other and certainly not people from the streets.

Crix nodded, knowing exactly where she was referring to. He'd come in on a skiff from New Coral a few docks down from there. It was close, but walking would be risky. The thugs in the bar were dumb and their leader was done, but that didn't mean they couldn't rally. Crix's eyes scanned the sidewalk until he found what they needed.

Crix casually walked up to a M-68 landspeeder and hopped in like he owned it. He popped open the dash and was in the process of hot wiring the thing when Terra asked her question.

"Guess you're just lucky."

He said with his focus still on the task at hand.

"Look, you can quiz me when you're patching me up on your ship."

Crix's words carried a play tone to them, any anger he'd felt before had abated upon his prior realization. Right now he was forced on getting Terra out of here. Once that was done he planned on trying to convince her to fly straight. Based on how she'd handled herself thus far, he wasn't sure she could handle the life of a smuggler. Much less the life of a criminal.

The speeder roared to life and Crix motioned for her to get in.

"C'mon, we should keep moving."

She was highly skeptical of his answer, but right now was no time to look a gift fathier in the mouth. She jumped into the speeder without missing a beat as he started to hotwire it. It was clear that despite her earlier... panic, she was not stranger to stealing vehicles.

They took off moving down the street, and she'd been able to walk here, which meant that actually getting to her ship in a vehicle was quite easy. They made the distance in only a few minutes and as of yet weren't stopped by the Black Sun. That was the good news.

The bad news was that someone else had decided to meet them at the hangar. Apparently the docking bay was under the "protection" of another gang. Fortunately not Black Sun this time, which was probably all that saved their lives, but some small time gang with a half-sun as the symbol stitched onto their jackets.

It looked like there were at least three poking around the hangar bay, perhaps looking to extract "protection money" from whoever's ship it was. Hers. It was her ship. She was not happy that someone was even looking at her ship, let alone putting a greasy paw on it.

That's my ship, she hissed under her breath, but she really didn't want to get into a gunfight with another gang tonight. She wasn't sure Crix would survive another gunfight with her...

Crix was a little surprised stealing a speeder wasn't more nerve-wracking for Terra. Then again he was comparing apples to oranges in the spectrum of criminal activity they'd plowed through since meeting. The speeder came to life and once Terra was in he'd take off. He didn't drive like a bat out of hell though. He was meticulous in following the local traffic laws. The last thing his pursuers would be looking for was an M-68 doing the speed limit.

The drive was short, a little over two miles, and uneventful, praise the gods. As they pulled in he spotted a Dynamic-II freighter with a handful of Quarren's poking around it's lot. Crix heard Terra claim the ship and he sighed. Nothing could just be easy, could it...

He swung the speeder into a parking spot just across from Terra's ship. "Let's play it cool. We might be able to talk our way through this."

Crix didn't recognize the half-sun symbol, but it's visage was painfully reminiscent of the gang they were possibly being chased by. He stifled his paranoia and slipped his bad arm out of his jacket. He draped it over his good shoulder obscuring his RSFK. Better to be safe than sorry.

The Scoundrel took a deep breath, "Be ready to make a run for it. If we can get inside your ship there's not much they can do from the outside."

Crix eased his way out of the speeder. Pain lanced up his arm and he tried to play it off, but he doubted it worked. The numbing effect of the cream was starting to wear off and the pain caused sweat to bead across his forehead.

His good hand squeezed the grip of his weapon. He'd needed to be quicker than fast if this got ugly and right now he wasn't sure that was possible. The group hovering around Terra's ship took notice of their approach. They regrouped and moved to meet Crix and Terra at the front of the lot.

"Greeting friends," started the middle quarren. He was a pale orange color with kind eyes. Crix frowned. "Have you heard the name of our Lord and Savior?"
