DESCRIPTION​

Hyperdrive, the technology which allows a starship to skip outside of normal reality and cross vast distances by traversing a mysterious dimension known as hyperspace, has been known at least for millennia in the Galaxy at large. At one time, only very large and expensive ships had hyperdrive, but over thousands of years the technology has become cheap, compact and commonplace. Despite this, not every vessel possesses hyperdrive, to the disappointment of some pilots. There is something to remedy this situation, however.

Aftermarket hyperdrives can be fitted to most vessels, and are fairly straightforward to incorporate into the design of even small craft, but a typical modification kit only comes with the drive itself. A navicomputer or astromech droid must also be acquired, and having one of these is essential, as they are required to make the hyperspace calculations that tell a hyperdrive how to function. Aftermarket drives are typically intended to be fitted to vessels which possessed no hyperdrive before; they can be fitted as a backup drive to ships which do already have a main drive, however.

Aftermarket hyperdrives, due to their power consumption and the system modifications needed to accommodate them, typically incur a sublight performance penalty. Class 4 drives and above, the most common, incur a -5 MGLT penalty to a starship's speed, while class 3 drives drop -10 MGLT, class 2 drives -15 MGLT and class 1 drives -20 MGLT.

LEGALITY​

Legal. Not being an offensive weapon, use of hyperdrive is unrestricted in most of the Galaxy.
