DESCRIPTION
Deflector shields are a staple of starship design, both during war and in peacetime. Not all ships are equipped with shielding as standard, however, and many pilots look for a little extra security for their craft. As such, it is common to fit an aftermarket shield projector.

Aftermarket deflectors come in 3 varieties; light, medium and heavy. Due to the extra power drain, having aftermarket shields does incur a penalty to performance at all times, typically -5 MGLT for light shields, -10 MGLT for medium shields and -15 MGLT for heavy shields.

Heavy shields, even aftermarket ones, cannot be fitted to any craft smaller than a bulk freighter or capital ship, mainly due to physical space and power requirements.

Aftermarket deflector screens are meant to be fitted as an upgrade which replaces existing shields, or as a new feature for ships which have no shields by default, and may be used as normal in this case. They may serve as a backup for shields on vessels which do already have them, but take time to power up after the main shields go down. Light aftermarket shields require 10 seconds to come online, whereas medium shields require 15 seconds and heavies 20 seconds. Standard performance penalties also still apply to backup shields.

LEGALITY
Legal. Not being an offensive weapon, use of deflector shields is unrestricted in most of the Galaxy.

INTENT
To create a defensive upgrade for starships.
