Hannibal always seemed to end up back on Nar Shaddaa, one way or the other. He'd been gone a little too long for his taste in fact, off fighting Sith and going to memorials and so on. If only his return was for a less ridiculous and horrible reason than kriffing zombies of all things. Seriously, zombies. What the hell kind of holovid was he in?

Today he'd decided on wearing his armor considering the seriousness of the situation, keeping himself visible as a Jedi without quite revealing his face. Both of his blasters, the DG-29 and the RSKF-44 he'd used to replace his lost DE-10, were arranged on his person. The first was holstered on his right hip, the second in a mag holster on his left thigh. Two lightsabers were mag-clipped to the left side of his Jedi utility belt, his original alongside the black and gold of a fallen Sith Champion. Today it didn't matter that the Hutts had put out a bounty on Jedi nearly as much as it mattered that the panicking people had someone worth gathering around. Hannibal wouldn't even mind if Talak wore his own mask today, frankly. It was the right moment for it.

The two of them had raced to the lower levels of Nar Shaddaa aboard Arcene, stopping just short of the quarantine checkpoint. Hannibal practically leapt out of his seat, locking the airspeeder when they were both out, and moved to speak to the present security personnel, adjusting his tone and manner of walking as he went. Now was not the time to be nice.

Security was already having trouble handling and processing the mob of the povertous and downtrodden. They were basically gangsters in uniform, after all. Combat boots clacking sharply against the filthy metal floor he stopped himself in front of the one he recognized as an 'officer', based on the official-looking lieutenant's badge on his jacket.

"We will help you get people moving. I expect that won't be a problem?" he said icily with a sense of casual command, his aura in the Force giving off gentle waves of authority and power as he loomed over Nikto officer. Nothing in his tone suggested that a refusal would be accepted, the cool tone of a man who was not open to argument. Even if Durr had put a bounty out on saber-users, starting a fight with one of the space wizards who looked like he was ready to fight was generally considered a terrible idea, and this guy looked overwhelmed as it was. He was barely prepared to deal with the raging undead, much less the addition of two Jedi.

While Hannibal might have been confident enough to wear his sabers openly, Talak was certainly not. Perhaps it was his history killing people on this world or perhaps it was his history as a Sith in hiding or perhaps it was simply his own personal paranoia. Whatever the reason - or probably all three - prevented him from openly wearing the saber that was now hidden under his robes.

His only openly carried weapon was his short phrik vibrosword. Although not much to look at, if the infected actually got here, perhaps the saber would come out. Or perhaps he would simply be able to use the short sword to his advantage.

The Force was swirling here, and it wasn't in a good way. It swirled with darkness and dark emotions, but the most prominent was the streaks of vibrant red fear. It was a feeling all too familiar to him. His mind traveled back to the days not so long ago when he'd seriously considered the possibility of massacring this whole world. The thought... was definitively un-Jedi, but he still wasn't a Jedi yet.

But who was he kidding, he was certainly on track to become one, wasn't he?

He pushed the thought aside as he started moving toward the edge of the crowd. He saw a variety of tools and weapons in the hands of the thugs. Stun batons, electrostaffs, and a variety of blasters. At least two of those were good for crowd control.

Uh... no, but you better stay out of our way! the thug stated before turning back and shoving the next civilian back into line.

We need to make orderly lines. Any news of the infected? he asked.

On their way, he said with a tone that said he didn't want to be here when they arrived. Everyone in the crowds may well be torched or shot when the frenzied arrived. Or simply locked in the lower levels to be devoured. Talak shuddered at the thought.

He also realized that this was going to involve hard decisions, and he wondered if that was why he'd been asked to come along. Some of these decisions about how did and didn't make it through might be... un-Jedi.

Hannibal scowled behind his helmet, a truly rare expression from the usually cheery man. He could tell these guards didn't much care for the people they were paid to protect, but he didn't expect much from up-jumped cutthroats. Even so, it irritated him. He supposed he'd never like Hutts and their gangs much, but there was work to do in the moment. More could be decided on later.

He nodded sharply as the nikto in charge agreed to Hannibal's 'request' and stepped forward towards the crowd, tall form straight. He stretched his senses out in the Force, recognizing the distinctive tinge of fear. He could hear the scattered voices of the crowd and the distant smell of death, but he did let them shake him.

His mask and the Force both amplified his voice, adding on a low-powered suggestion and making it take on a strange tone. It could barely count as a mind trick considering how spread out it was, but it would at least draw attention, which was the point.

"Move forward quickly, stay in the line, and stick together! We are here to keep you safe!" he shouted over the thrum of the crowd, moving in to help people who needed it through the gates and check for injuries. From what he'd been told, it spread through biting, and he those who were infected would quickly need to be dealt with.

The infected would be here soon, Hannibal could feel it. The walking dead left a sick impression in the Living Force that sent shivers down the young Knight's spine. He would face them down if he had to in order to protect these people, but he wasn't stupid. This was a situation where everyone might not make it through the gate in time. He'd fight hard of course, but difficult choices may need making.

Hannibal had gone through experiences and conversations lately that had helped him get over some of his fears and insecurities. He felt confident he could probably make the right choices here, but he was glad of Talak's presence. Hannibal was determined to defend these people from anyone or anything that would lead them to their death, but leaving some to die or be devoured to protect the rest was still something he may need a push to do when it came down to it.

"Keep an eye out, please." he said, looking up to address Talak. Hannibal needed to focus his attention on keeping these people calm and orderly, and he couldn't do that if he was also on the lookout for the horde. He didn't know how skilled Talak was at calming people through the Force, but he definitely knew his senses were sharp.

Talak couldn't shake the feeling in the Force that something was wrong. Obviously there was the fear and panic related to the horde that was incoming, but it was something else. Something far closer that had his skin crawling like a spider squirming underneath his skin.

I will, he said as Hannibal asked him to keep watch. He moved through the crowd to a large freight speeder and climbed atop it to gain lookout. His eyes scanned over the crowd and he started making estimates in his mind.

700... 8? he wondered to himself. If it was that many people, they had their work cut out for them.

What's wrong, Talak? What is it? he asked himself. His fingers stroked across the hilt of his sword as he watched. His senses were closely attuned, and he watched people passing through the checkpoint.

A flash in the Force was all he got. The moment's precognition that made Jedi and Sith appear so quick. A vision of the blaster bolt lancing through the air at his chest was all it took for him to draw his sword and take a quick pair of steps back.

Who or why this individual was shooting was unknown, but from further up in the crowd by the checkpoint another man had drawn a small holdout blaster. Violence mixed with desperation in the Force and oozed from the man as he raised the blaster and fired into the Nikto before turning to aim at Hannibal.

Talak wasn't the only one getting an odd feeling, but the feeling of wrongness and danger tickling its way across the back of Hannibal's neck wasn't exactly helpful on its own. They were sort of in the middle of leading a kark-load of people away from a horde of zombies, the whole area smelled of danger.

Suddenly lightning shot down his spine and his head was drawn around, a shot ringing out half a moment later towards Talak. He'd be fine, right? Another shot and Hannibal was already reacting, green saber drawn into his left hand and DG-29 into his right. As the man's shot was deflected safely off to the left away from the crowd Hannibal's pistol fired a stun shot at similarly close range, impacting his chest.

Damn idiots! he thought very loudly to himself, looking around for the other guy, who was farther away from the gate itself and somewhere amongst the crowd of people. Who were now freaking out again. Great.

Hannibal couldn't really calm a crowd and look for a guy at the same damn time. He dragged the stunned guy behind the gate and dumped him alongside the wounded nikto, who was luckily wearing a blast vest. He'd live, but he wasn't going to be much help. Not that he was anyway.

The Jedi refocused his attention, snapping out orders like he'd been taught in the distant past and putting a little oomph into it.

"Guide the people in, he's fine." he demanded with an firm and monotone voice, not quite outright persuasion but more of a nudge in the direction he wanted. The few security personnel blinked once, slapped a bacta patch over the burns that got through the vest, and got to guiding people in and trying to keep the crowd calm, as ordered.

By then Hannibal was already off, leaping across the ground over to Talak and up to the top of the freight speeder, whether or not he was still up there. Hopefully he could get a better look from up here, and he'd be able to get more people doing what he wanted with a better vantage point anyway.

Assuming Talak hadn't already taken care of the problem, Hannibal was getting ready to deliver some flying knee-shaped justice.

Talak didn't stick around after taking fire from the man in the crowd. Unfortunately, it was a crowd, and it was already panicked before the gunshot. In the subsequent fire, people screamed, ran, crouched, and every other reaction.

For his part, Talak dropped down off the vehicle and started pushing his way through the crowd and reaching out with his senses, but there was simply too much chaos and fear to be of much use.

His lightsaber slipped free of his belt now, and he gripped it tightly in his hand. He wasn't sure if Jedi were supposed to kill people, but this guy had fired on him first, hadn't he? It wasn't like it was cold blood, right?

He'd do what he had to, he decided, and continued his advance as Hannibal leapt up behind him. He pressed a finger into his ear to activate the comlink to Hannibal.

Keep an eye out, I think there's something more going on here, he said. If there were two shooters, there may be more. Particularly if this was an organized attempt to escape quarantine.

At the main gate, Hannibal would hear more gunfire, this time from the thugs as one of them sprayed into the crowd, downing a trio of civilians. One of them - a young woman no more than thirty - clutched a cylinder in her hand that appeared to have been mistaken for a stun baton, causing the opening of fire. The guards were getting twitchy after the fact and lacked the trigger discipline of real law enforcement.

Kriff, what was that? he asked, unable to see through the throngs of people. He continued pushing his way through the crowd before a sensation of creeping chilled his spine.

He spun quickly, blue saber igniting and cleaving up. The blaster bolt - aimed for him - was sent directly back and into the face of the man who had fired at him.

Got one of the shooters! he declared, a nagging feeling that they were running out of time tugging at the back of his mind.

Too many things at once, and too many people. A second after Hannibal alighted atop the freight speeder hs head whipped around back towards the checkpoint gate, one of the thugs firing into the crowd. Talak had said something that Hans heard through him helmet comm about there being more going on, and if that was the case this was going to be extra chaotic. With the addition of the Hutt's half-baked security turning out to be trigger happy, Hannibal felt it was time to stop being nice.

The Force surged through him and carried him back to the gate in a burst of bleed, blurring over the heads of the crowd as his saber came sharply down at the offending weapon. Green plasma cleaved the rifle in half as Hannibal's off-hand blaster fired a stun bolt into the unarmored face of the thug next to him. Hannibal's blaster arm coiled and shot right, a sharp nose-breaking elbow directly into the face of the now-rifleless man who had fired into the crowd. Amidst the mess another thug hastily raised his blaster pistol and fired a shot directly at Hannibal, who returned it directly to the man's right shoulder with a bat of his saber.

Despite his broken nose, the civilian shooter was apparently a mix of panicked and angry enough to still try backing up and drawing his sidearm blaster. Hannibal stepped with him, green blade flashing at the limb now crossing the man's body, and took it off at the elbow. The man fell back against the ground yowling and clutching his brand new stump while Hannibal turned to faced the remaining guards.

"Enough! I said guide them forward, not shoot them. The next person to fire into the crowd on lethal loses their right to a weapon arm." he barked at them in his best impression of a pissed-off mob lieutenant. Between that and the quick handling of the other three and the lack of an officer they seemed to decide to follow along and not risk losing limbs to a Jedi's lightsaber.

Hannibal re-holstered his blaster and used his free hand to activate his helmet comm to Talak.
"Good work. Can you tell what's going on? I have a feeling we don't have much time here." The Jedi could feel the mounting danger creeping through the Living Force. These people needed to move faster and all the shooting was only making things worse. On the other hand, seeing the trigger-happy guards meet immediate retribution from a Jedi seemed to help a little when it came to getting people moving.

Hannibal stepped over to the crowd and dragged the three shot civilians from the group past the checkpoint and checked their vitals. Two were dead, but one had only taken a shot to the leg and was alive but out from shock. They didn't look terribly well nourished on top of everything else.
"Find peace in death." he intoned quietly to each of the dead.

"Devaronian. Bacta patch. Now." he snapped out at one of the guards. The devaronian in question almost literally jumped to it, bouncing over to retrieve a patch from the medkit used to treat the officer and handing it off to Hannibal to apply to the leg wound. He stood up again and went back to checking and guiding the crowd through, senses alert for any signs of sickness and emitting subtle waves of calm that would wash over those nearby. It wasn't perfect, but it would have to do. They'd slowed significantly after the shooting and he needed to get them going forward again.

Hopefully Talak could handle what he found, because Hannibal really wanted to get these people moving. The dead were coming.

Hannibal, keep them moving through the checkpoint, I'll try to find out what's going on, he said. If there was something going on, it was better to let one questionable individual sneak through than keep hundreds here to be... eaten or whatever happened to people caught by the horde. He'd rather not think about it too much.

You need to keep the lines moving, even if it means not patching everyone up, he said. He knew what he was saying, and he didn't love it, but he also knew that dozens more might die if they didn't keep the line moving.

We will transcend! All of us! a voice shouted from the crowd, and people looked in the general direction before another voice shouted the same elsewhere. More blasters raised and began to fire at the gate. Someone near the front of the crowd began to wave a blaster through the air to drive people back toward the dead, and it seemed to be working. This was really, really not going well.

Hannibal had to agree with Talak on that last point, even if he didn't like it much. This was probably one of those greater good situations. He had just gotten to it when more several more blasters when off towards the gate, another madman waving a blaster in the air near the front somewhere to Hannibal's right. Unacceptable.

"Talak, deal with the shooters."

The Jedi stalked off towards the man, raising his right hand. The man turned to point his blaster Hannibal's way and quickly found the offending arm twisting sharply to the right, dislocating the wrist and elbow, then tossed relatively gently to the side away from the ground. One of the guards stunned him for good measure, having remembered what was said about firing on lethal and a bit freaked out by Hannibal's space magic.

"Keep walking forward! The dead are not your salvation, only your death! Forward is safety, so walk forward!" he shouted over the crowd, waving people forward and once again putting some Force-based oomph into it. He tried a good bit harder this time, but trying to affect the large front group of people even in the form of a nudge in the right direction was pushing it.

Unfortunately, though this was his specialty, the crowd was too numerous and too panicked. It also drew the direction attention of two madmen, that charged forward out of the crowd and engaged him with vibroblades, too close to the crowd for the cowed guards to risk firing. Hannibal's saber flashed out and intercepted one blade and he caught the wrist of other, only suffering a relatively small scratch from the foot-long blade, but he was now preoccupied while others continued to press the crowd backwards. They had entirely stopped moving forward at this point.

"Talak, deal with the shooters faster!" he insisted over the comms, trying to regain his focus between his wide-range persuasion attempt and the sudden attack. It was just constant today.

Talak wasn't sure how there had been this many psychos, but on a planet this large, it probably shouldn't have been shocking that there were a handful of crazies who wanted to become one with the frenzied.

Talak pushed through the crowd with his lightsaber in hand as he looked for the new gun-wavers. The crowd was dense and in complete chaos and disarray now, which made that task nigh impossible.

He pushed toward one of the shooters, leaping up out of the crowd and onto the top of another speeder when his saber ignited. He swept the blade down to try to hit the man, but it was too late. He'd already vanished into the crowd, and taking him down would have taken off the heads of several innocent people.

If there was a silver lining, it was that he was running instead of shooting, but Talak knew he would pop up any moment to begin firing at people once again.

They're still in the wind, he said, deactivating his blade once again and dropping into the crowd in pursuit.

Why in the name of all varieties of Hell was this so complicated? First a zombie plague, then crazy zombie plague cultists! The guards behind Hannibal were half trying to get the crowd to move forward since they couldn't shoot the guys doing the corralling and half watching to see if the Jedi lost his fight. What a useless lot.

Hannibal regathered himself and took a step back, letting the Force flow through him to empower his body. His right arm pulled the wrist holding the weapon with him and into a sharp rising knee, knocking the breath out of one of them and probably cracking a rib or two. They collapsed in a heap, letting Hannibal focus on the other guy.

The second madman drew his arm back to thrust again, but he was slower and an amatuer knife fighter. The tip of the Jedi's lightsaber dropped down and delivered a light "cut" to the man's hand, making him drop the weapon, which was followed up by a palm cracking him across the jaw. Not a terribly difficult fight, but it had wasted yet more time.

Hannibal grumbled in response to Talak's report, deactivating his lightsaber and placing it back on his belt. Then he moved forward into the ground, beginning to slip through to get to the people waving guns around.
It was difficult. Even moving with the crowd was problematic from the sheer density and panic. He and Talak were both used to moving in crowds, but this was just ridiculous.

He could feel the danger starting to mount, somewhere in the distance. This was not going well, and Hannibal was just about ready to start enacting more serious measures to get these people inside before they joined the raging dead.

Keep moving forward! Talak shouted over the crowd, using the Force to carry his voice unnaturally over the crowd. With any luck, it would help them moving forward.

Time was running out, and Talak was beginning to think it was more important to let the shooters go and try to track them down later if they could get the civilians moving.

Rather than continue to chase the man through the crowd, Talak began to think about ways to either slow the creatures or getting the civilians out faster.

Kriff, kriff, kriff, he muttered, leaping up to another speeder to gain a vantage point. These people were not going to all be able to make it through the gates in time, which meant that they needed to slow the advance... somehow.

He'd have killed for some explosives right now, and while he didn't want to cause wanton destruction of property, it was less valuable to him than the lives in jeopardy.

Talak's shouting seemed to have none of the desired results. In fact, the people seemed to scatter even more now that the gunfire had begun. Some decided to brave their own homes and flee or seek some shelter. It tore into Talak's soul to watch them run. He knew that they would die. Each and every one of them. The rage against the cultists threatened to seize him, but he reminded himself that that wasn't his way anymore. He took deep breaths and instead focused his attention on how to slow the advance of the infected.

I'm going to try to slow them down, he said. It was probably nuts of him, but someone needed to do something to stop the advance or they wouldn't get anywhere near clearing everyone through the gates in time.

This was getting really troublesome. Hannibal was having trouble actually getting to the shooters on his side, but he could absolutely feel the sense of danger growing. Time to prioritize.

He tried reaching out and joining himself with the panicking minds around him to take over their flight reflex in the proper direction, but
it was at that point the crazies Hannibal had been originally moving toward made themselves known again. They pushed forward through the crowd to deal with the very obvious Jedi, but were having issues actually bringing their blasters to bare. Especially after Hannibal noticed them when they fired past his head and nearly hit several civilians.

Hannibal himself was a bit squished, but that wouldn't stop his use of the Force much. Clenching his hands relatively gently he closed telekinetic power around the necks of both shooters and yanked sharply to the side, sending them tumbling to the ground as their centers of balance were disrupted. The grip was tight, functionally a stranglehold, and the lack of blood to their brains resulted in them passing out relatively quickly.

But the crowd still wasn't moving. It wasn't precisely moving backwards either, but it wasn't moving forward.

"Just push them or something!" he said over comms, gathering the Force. If they were too panicked to convince, maybe they could just try shoving them to start some momentum.

All of this was going poorly, but that was how life was, wasn't it? Things only went well every once in a while, and plenty of plans went completely sideways.

The worst of it was that Talak was about to have to watch hundreds of people torn to pieces by the creatures. He heard Hannibal's voice ring out in his ear about pushing the crowd. Somehow, he didn't think that was likely to work. Surely just shoving them all forward wouldn't be an answer.

He gathered the Force to himself and spread its power out, giving the group a shove in the back, which... went far worse than he could have imagined.

The crowd turned on him at once, swarming back in anger at him and forward at Hannibal. The rain of blows against Talak made his head swim and it was only another telekinetic repulse that gave him the space to leap up to an upper fire escape to escape the attack. He was exhausted and barely able to stand as he saw the swarm arrive.

The sounds were awful, and he wanted to step up to help them, but his feet gave way under him as the sounds and sight of screams and death filled the streets below him. He buried his face in his hands, unable to continue watching what unfolded as feelings of guilt and shame wrapped around him.

Hannibal stiffened for a moment, suddenly feeling a hundred hands grasping at him and a bolt of lightning down his spine. A second later the crowd swarmed him and he found himself fighting to keep from being trampled. He gritted his teeth and braced himself, pushing hard towards the edge. An unpowered knife scraped across his ribs but did little in the face of the armorweave bodysuit beneath the blast vest.

The metal pipe that followed shortly after, however, did plenty. It cracked across the side of his chest and ribs, sending him reeling. Rejecting the instinct to retaliate he instead used his already gathered energy to telekinetically give himself a little space and launch himself out and away from the ground, blaster flashing out to crack open a window. He tumbled in messily amidst a shower of shattered glass, clipping the window's edge and rolling across an apartment floor in a completely undignified fashion.

There is no death.
Grunting in pain he dropped his blaster and held his ribs, unable to properly assess the damage through his armor. He let out a breath and stuck to shallow breathing, anything more causing him significant pain. "Talak?" he hissed through his helmet comm. The other man was strong and skilled, but things kept getting worse and he was worried.
There is no death.
Hannibal didn't have much time to hear the reply. The swarm of hungry dead arrived, and what happened then drew far more of his attention. Cold fingers gripped at him, screaming filled his ears, and the stench of death and decay assaulted his nose. He found it difficult to breath and threw off his helmet, dragging himself away from the window and towards the opposite wall and leaning against it. There is no death, only the Force. There is no death.
There is no death
"Ego. Find Talak." he ordered through his ear comm and leaned his head back. He focused on steadying his breathing and wrapping the Force around his injuries. He needed to at least be well enough to get moving, and simply whisking away the pain with something like this was a good way to pass out. Hopefully Talak would be alright. They'd failed and now the dead were here. There were people trying to get people killed. They had more work to do, and this failure would never be forgotten.
There is no death.
Hannibal was good enough to move quickly, gritting his teeth at the pain and still quite injured but fairly sure nothing was fully broken. He made his way through the building and to the roof, retrieving his helmet and clicking his belt comm for pickup. Lee relocated the airspeeder to the roof and Hannibal gingerly climbed inside, the speeder flying off back to the Catspaw. Mid-flight Hannibal swallowed a small tablet and leaned back in his seat, gripping his hands together. He would need to rest after this.
There is no death. There is no death. There is no death. There is no death. There is no death. There is no death. There is no death. There is no death. There is no death.
