A TEACHER'S BETRAYAL

.
Frozen tundra, Hoth, K18

The cold, unforgiving arctic wind stung his face as he made his way up the hill. The man, already bundled in a dark robe, hiked the scarf he was wearing higher up his face. Vision was not a concern, and so it covered his entire face now, warming it. He could already feel the sweat gathering on his brow.

Pushing back against the wind, he climbed up the hill, striding toward the entrance of an icy cavern. With nothing in sight, he stood out, a minuscule black dot against a pristine white canvas. At his waist, deep under the robes, was the battered hilt of a lightsaber. Although the armor he was wearing supposedly had a helmet, he had chosen not to wear it today, as he had no need.

He would only be meeting his apprentice, after all. His apprentice. The words felt familiar to him, and had felt that way for the months since he had last seen the other man. Today was the day when they had planned a meeting, on the icy planet of Hoth, far from Jedi space.

To the men, the only two risks were the cold, and themselves. Chances were slim that only one would walk away. With another Sith, he would feel uncomfortable meeting in such a remote location. He knew, however, that Soran was a trustworthy man.

He had reached the mouth of the cave, and was now resting, braced against the icy wall of the cavern. The rancor-leather gloves on his hands kept them warm, although he could feel their temperature dropping.

Now feeling considerably better, Calmax Zokar pushed his scarf back down to his neck, and pulled down the hood of his robes. His eyes, covered by a blindfold, felt the change in temperature from warm to cold. Now, he waited at the entrance of the cave, for his apprentice.

Soran watched from a distance as Calmax made his way to the planned meeting point. He felt the cold but payed little attention to it, he had live in the dark of space his whole life the extra layer provided by his coat would be enough. Making his way to the cave Soran calmed his mind, he knew Calmax would call him that word again...apprentice. The sorcerers claimed he was being childish by not accepting anyone to train him, but he would not call another master.

Soran calmly walked into the cave, Calmax had called this meeting for an "important" reason it was time to find out why.
"Hello, Calmax you look well. Why are we on this forsaken planet?" Soran smiled to himself about the low caliber joke and leaned on the cave wall.

"Hello, Soran, thank you. You will eventually learn that these 'forsaken planets...'" his fingers formed quotation marks in the air, "...will be the reason you're still breathing. In these unsure times, you can't travel from point A to point B without running into a Jedi or Mandalorian that's out to get you. Trust me, I've learned this the hard way."

He sighed, then waved his hand vaguely in the air. "So, tell me—what have you learned in the past few months?"

His voice formed an echo, but was muffled out by the wind outside. The harsh tempest would make it hard for anyone not in the cave to hear them speaking, thus adding on to the remote-ness of their location.

"Learned? You know that I have spent most of my time studying the history of the Sith.", was this some attempt to act as a mentor to him again? Soran continued mildly annoyed, "I have also focused my training toward Sith magic." There was no pride in his voice, just boredom he was on the cusp of a breakthrough in his research he did not have time for this but would humor Calmax for a bit longer. "Have you unearthed anything new?", Soran turned his back to Calmax and looked out into the storm.

"I found a holocron that teaches Trakata, if that's good enough for you," he replied, somewhat heatedly. He was getting irritated by Soran's petulant disinterest.

"You seem upset for some reason. Have I done something to annoy you?" he asked. Soran was not acting the way he did when Calmax met him on Nar Shaadaa. His flame was still there, but his personality had changed.

In his training, Soran had gotten more...rash.

Soran looked back his mind still far away in his notes, "Upset...no, I have just been preoccupied wth my research. Trakata you say? That is a difficult form to learn and even more difficult to master." He remembered his first foray into saber combat and remembered how poorly it went. "Is that why I am here? To see a new form?", Soran realized how short he was being with one of the few Sith that accepted him, maybe he was being cruel but the research was his passion he loved it above everything else.
