It wasn't often one got a second chance to do things over, but it seemed that Oren was getting that today. It had been a few weeks since he had been on the planet of Utupau, he had vowed to save that boy with Bri, but it didn't work out. His master's old crew had ran off and left the whole lower portions of the city in sickness. It seemed whatever was in that spice had left the people even more sick and lethargic.

Oren wasn't going to take any more risks with this one, he had lost his arm the last time he was here, and wouldn't let that happen to the two Jedi companions he was with today. He knew that it caused some agression in those that consumed the spice, but what in it caused it, was unknown to the Jedi. They would have to make their way through the lower city, helping the sick and the city workers who desperately wanted to end the virus that was spreading across the city at a terrible rate. The three of them would find themselves outside of the same elevator that he had been rushed out of. "This is going to be dangerous..these people are going to attack us, but we're here to help them." He would peer to his fellow knight and the padawan. "Let's find the source of this spice and treat as many people as possible."

Nashyr was no stranger to spice, or its' effects on those that used them. All too many times she dealt with the aftermath of one of her girls getting hooked... and yet, this time was going to be different. She was not too familiar with Oren Zapan, having only met the Knight during her initial visit to Ajan Kloss, however she was encouraged to participate within the Order as much as possible.

She was also no stranger to being attacked. However... she was a definite stranger to the idea of defending without damaging. Though she had had some practice with her Master, Maxims, this was something different.

This was real, with real consequences.

"
Right," she agreed, shrugging on her jacket over her blaster vest. Unlike her companions, she still could not yet dress in Jedi robes of any style; she was already a target enough allying herself with the Order, no need to broadcast it further. But there was also the question of treating so large an affected populace; she had minimal medical skills, but she would help where she could.

Perhaps their third companion, the scarred-face man Ash, had some experience healing others... but she would do what she could, to protect, and to shed light into the dark miasma that seemed to lurk in Utapau. She had her blaster close enough to draw quickly, and it was set to stun.

...Just in case.

Ash stood stoically by the other Jedi, his arms were crossed over his black and brown Jedi tunic. He wasn't hiding his saber, so it just sat there hanging off of his hip on full display. He didn't know much about Utapau, but the people here were strange. Looking at them gave Ash the same feeling he got when he looked in the mirror, they were just unsettling. He hesitated to use any language stronger than that, but those less than clean thoughts still permeated his mind whenever they came across one of the natives.

He was honestly feeling a little out of place amongst this little Jedi team. Oren was someone he had met before, and even though it was only the once, he did not come out of that conversation with a favorable opinion on the man. He pushed him to reveal things he wasn't ready to, and then snubbed him when Ash had asked for forgiveness for his genuinely unwarranted outburst. It was one thing to not accept apology, it was another entirely to ignore him. It hurt both him and his pride to see someone he respected do such a thing.

The Cathar was another story, he had never met her, but from what he understood she was new. So he was optimistic she might see things his way. It didn't help the feeling of awkwardness when he realized both of these people were older than him. Technically he was a 'superior' to the Cathar, or at least he was someone she was supposed to listen to considering his status as a fully fledged Knight. But it was awkward ordering around someone when they were older than you. It just seemed disrespectful.

He was a little apprehensive about this mission. Fighting off spiceheads wasn't exactly something he was experienced in; he was always a battlefield medicine kind of guy. He wasn't some therapist that can help them with their addiction, Ash sealed up wounds, he didn't deal with trauma. He flicked his blaster to stun out of respect for the fact that they weren't here to kill anyone, but still did nothing about the lightsaber on his belt.

"Best get moving then. Nashyr," He said, looking to the Cathar. "Do you have any training in medicine?" Ash rasped quietly, gesturing with his offhand to the large satchel he had strapped over his left shoulder which then sat on his right hip. The bag was filled with medical supplies, including a basic first aid kit and some bacta, but for this occasion he had brought along some syringes that would prevent overdoses. He was hopeful she knew how to jab someone with a needle, but if she didn't it was best to learn now.

He didn't ask Oren, both because he assumed all Jedi had the basics down already, and because he was still upset with the older man.

Oren wore a simple synth hide jacket and a pair of smugglers pants, his lightsaber hidden within his jacket. He seemed out of place compared to Ash, but in a lot of ways the two of them were polar opposites. Oren respected the man for his work and the pain he went through, his outburst did not affect him, and instead he saw someone that was vulnerable--someone that he might have pushed a bit too far. Hopefully, any problems that existed between the two of them would quickly be resolved, but that was something that was still up in the air.

For now, Oren had to turn his attention to the problem at hand. With each level lowering closer and closer to the bottom floor, Oren could feel his heart racing, "I know the basics of force healing," he would say with a gentle nod, "But, when it comes to healing, Master Ash will lead the operation," he'd turn towards the man giving him a gentle smile.

As the elevator doors opened, they would find the street empty. The blood from Oren's accident was dried up along the street, but nothing or nobody else was there. "Keep calm and keep your eyes open," he could see Quarantine droids patrolling the streets up ahead. "They don't look friendly."

She tilted her head towards Ash, exhaling softly. "I... know some," she admitted, brow knitting. "In my previous work, I dealt with a lot of minor, sometimes more serious, injuries..." a wistful smile touched the corners of her lips, before it faded, and she gave a one-shouldered shrug. "I'll help however much you need me to, Masters Ash, Oren." Her lips twitched at the thought of calling anyone 'Master'... her brother would be rolling on the floor if he ever heard her call anyone that.

But Oren seemed pensive... perhaps it was the situation they were in, but he in particular seemed disturbed by something.

Then the doors opened... and there was nobody.

Silence rattled along the empty streets. She would have never thought a place that was probably crowded with bodies could be so silent... and yet the fur along her neck and shoulders prickled with awareness. Perhaps it was nothing... but it smelled awfully suspicious. She found her tail twitching in agitation, and ears flicked back slightly.

She couldn't explain it, but something felt off.

Ash nodded, grinding his teeth a little. He fished out two of the overdose hypo's and gave one to both Oren and Nashyr. "Almost universally for humanoids if you jab them here," he rasped pointing to the outside of his thigh, "stims like these will be effective. Anything a bit more alien, just do your best to guess." He finished a little sardonically. There were only so many classes you could take on medicine. And there were a huge number of aliens you might encounter in your daily life that you just couldn't be prepared for them all.

He was content to let Oren stumble around with only force healing, but from his own experience Healing only worked on wounds, not sickness or poisons. Granted he had never tried too hard on either as he either just didn't have the time to experiment, or he never found someone willing to be a test subject. But that would be petty, so he gave the older knight a hypo in order to save lives.

"So if you see someone frothing at the mouth and convulsing, stickem' with that." He muttered into the open space as the elevator doors opened. He stepped out, no sense wasting time on strange feelings and ominous silence. "Oren, any idea where these spiceheads will congregate?" He asked loudly and unkindly. Amongst his many negative opinions, those on folks who used drugs were in fact, quite negative.

Oren's brown eyes fixated on the spot of blood that smeared across the street, his eyes flashing back to the rabid citizens and the terror. Anything Ash may have said was simply lost on the Jedi as he made his way towards the marking, a heavy sigh escaping his lips as he ran his robotic hand against the old stains. He would peer up towards the empty street, his face visibly disturbed.

"They were laying about on the street, coughing and bleeding," he would say in a low tone, never turning to face them, "They slowly pulled themselves up off of the street, and slowly started to charge us...twenty or thirty..I can't remember." He would rest his lone flesh hand against the mechanical one.

Turning back to the two of them, "I was too cocky, I failed these people and now it may be too late." A pain of sadness filled his eyes, but he did his best to calm himself. A Jedi never deals in absolutes. He would remind himself as he motioned for them to continue on down the street.

The three of them would walk, approaching the corner where the group of B1-Quarantine Droids marched. He would motion for them to be careful, "There's probably a reason why they're patrolling the streets." He would peer out, watching as the droids stopped. A lone child would walk out, coughing and spitting at the mouth.

"Sir.." One of the Droids nasally voice would call out to the group. "We got one here...a little one!"

The head droid would tilt his beak like head, "Protocol says to blast them.."

The droids would raise their blasters taking aim at the child, "We can't let that happen." He would pull himself out of cover, revealing himself to the eight droids, He would pull out with the force, pulling the lead droid towards him.

"Woah!" The Droids skinny hands would flail in the hand. "Exterminate this one first! Shoot him! Shoot him!" Oren would ignite his blade piercing it through the chest of the droid. Hopefully the others would join him, otherwise things were going to get hairy.

She pocketed the hypo, giving Ash a grin. "Hmm... duly noted. Thank you."

Seeing the fellow Knight pause at bloodstains on the street made her wonder... but at his own touch of his arm, it clicked. For a moment, she felt like she ought to say something... but then there was the thought that... this was personal, to him, and that's why this mission seemed so critical.

She wasn't apprised of any details, but she could guess. However, the moment was gone when the doors opened... and immediately things started happening.

Why can't the Jedi have a little more self-preservation in store?
She sighed inwardly, drawing her blaster.

As he attacked the leader, she took cover with a corner and fired, frying the head circuit with one, and hitting the shoulder of the other. She was at a disadvantage though; she couldn't get close without a lightsaber.

A flaw she hoped to amend much sooner rather than later with Max.

She would keep firing, however, as there was little else to do at the moment. Perhaps their charming friend Ash would be more helpful than she felt like she was being, but... she didn't really know the man. He seemed solid enough. And if the blade wouldn't cut them down, his acerbic wit certainly could.

Ash waited impatiently for Oren to begin talking, and when he did he just barely prevented himself from producing the Jedi patented disgusted noise. The man couldn't even answer a simple question, in fact he seemed set on reliving some stuff Ash really didn't know anything about. And to top it all off, yet again Ash was being ignored by the man, how nice.

He slowly spread out his arms in exasperation, already angry at his partner. Mission time was not the place to get all sentimental, you've gotta bury all that feely stuff somewhere deep down and only cry about it later when people aren't dying on your watch. Ash was pretty good at unhealthily suppressing his emotions while on the job, but there was something about seeing someone who should have known how to handle this just to utterly ignore what Ash privately lamented what they should be doing.

He could cry about his lost limb later, now was the time for rational thought. Speaking of irrational thought, when he didn't get even a 'pardon me' from Oren before the older knight began his little trek into nowhere, he did finally throw his hands up in the air in exasperation.

Ash still followed behind, begrudgingly. But it was pretty obvious he wasn't happy about it. Thankfully a group of uncouth droids were wandering around babbling about something or other. They were the perfect targets to let out a bit of his frustration on. So when they started blastin' Ash just joined in.

He was still poised and perfect in his saber stance, but his steps were a little quicker than they needed to be as he walked towards the first droid to shoot at him. He calmly deflected the blaster shots into the knee joint of the droid, deflecting another stray shot into the head of the final untouched droid before cleanly removing the head of the now crippled droid.

Once the droids were all dealt with, Ash looked around for a few moments making sure there wasn't anything else coming to attack them before he closed his sunset orange saber. He spotted the kid, who was having a bit of a fit on the ground now, and did a bit of a walk towards him. He gently rolled the kid over on his side, though he was coming to the sudden realization that this wasn't some OD case. "Oren! The hell is going on here? I've got an inkling that you haven't exactly told me everything! This isn't what spice does to someone!" He called back angrily. With an unhappy grunt he gestured for Nashyr to come over "Stick him in the leg with that hypo and lets see if it does anything, if it doesn't we are going to have a problem."

Ash was under the impression that they would be helping addicts who might resist for a few moments, whatever was happening to the kid was most certainly not that.

Oren's markings burned red as he turned to see Ash's outburst. The boy would fight and hiss, nearly biting and latching onto the Jedi's hand. The near human attempted to stop the man, he would motion quietly towards Nash to stick the kid who was coughing and grunting as his body twisted and squirmed.

It was clear where Ash and Oren stood on things, the Knight never seemed to like him, and he wasn't sure why. If he knew what it was that was going on, he wouldn't be standing here, looking at a possible solution. He would simply be doing it. His brown eyes would shift towards the man, "You think I know?" He'd point back towards the spot he was originally standing, "When I arrived these people were everywhere, and they bit my hand right off." He'd sigh, "It's not what spice does to people, but this gang..was experimenting with something, they're not addicted..it's something else entirely."He would peer towards the boy, hoping that the hypo would help with the symptoms, but he was unsure if it even would.

"It might be an infection of some kind."

Nashyr's voice was calm, but she was already prepped with the hypo, sticking the child in the leg and feeling some kick of remorse she couldn't be more gentle. There was something animalistic in the boy's eyes... something that left a chill down her spine. Something that spoke of... she wasn't quite certain what yet.

"Oren..." she spoke quietly, glancing his way. "Ash. What's wrong with this kid, other than coughing and spitting? What are we missing here?"

Just as Nashyr managed to apply the hypo to the kid, the little biter lived up to the name Ash had assigned to it. With some impressive angry flexibility, the kid bit into Ash's right hand which was holding him by the shoulder. Ash let out a loud barking curse, and resisted the instinctual reaction to return fire by punching the kid right in the middle of his skull. He growled in pain then gestured quickly over the face of the boy - just narrowly avoiding getting bit again - and with a bit of exertion from the force, the kids eyes rolled back in his head, unconscious. His body didn't stop its seizure, but his mouth did stop its biting.

Soon after however, the hypo did its job and began slowly purging the poison that was the Spice. It wasn't a cure for whatever madness was infecting these people, but it stopped the disturbing fru-ha-ha motions the kids body was spasming through. "I'd say we are missing a whole helluva lot more than we think. I mean whats the point of this?!" Ash rasped, as usual, angrily.

He stood up, "Leave the kid, if all these people are like this then a little overdose ain't exactly our priority. Oren, you said there was a gang doing this? Where are they?" He asked, almost hoping to be ignored again so his anger at the older man could continue to be justified.

Oren would peer back towards his fellow Jedi, anger flaring up his rarely angry eyes. "What the kriff are you doing?" He would point towards the kid. He understood the man's pain from the bite, but it was clear that the Hypo was doing its job to control the urges on the boy, but he was unsure of his mental state.

What was it with Ash and his anger, one that was often pushed towards Oren, which he could never understand why. "You're right, we can't save all these people with a little hypo," he'd bark with a sigh, as he thought back to the incident a few months prior, "We called for the Sector Rangers, but these cretins had vanished and covered up their tracks, but they left their shipment." He would look towards the Jedi, "We need to find the shipment that I believe is still contaminating their water supply."

He would peer towards the two of them, but his attention was focused on Ash, "Are you going to help?"

"Oh, stop fighting!" she huffed, capping and pocketing the hypo and reaching for her blaster, setting it for stun. "If they were this violent before because of some tainted spice, they wouldn't keep being so animalistic. And let's find their water source before we look like holey cheese."

She nodded once, gripping her blaster.
"Of course. Ash? Will you be alright?" Greenish-gold eyes glanced at his hand, then back up, concern written in that gaze. She was sure he would misconstrue it for pity, but right now she hardly cared one way or the other how any of them thought about her. They were here to help, and bickering wasn't going to make the situation any easier.

Ash returned Oren's glare, not stepping down now that he had finally managed to get a reaction out of the man. He knew intellectually that his actions were unfair to the man, but emotionally and hypocritically, Oren made a very easy target to blame for all the problems they were currently facing. He'd have retorted, saying he was merely using the commonly practiced Dull Sense on the Kid, but Nashyr seemed to be in a bit more of a reasonable mood than he was.

He looked a little ashamed when she spoke with some modicum of sympathy. She at the very least didn't deserve to be caught in the middle of a mission between two bickering knights. He flexed his hand and nodded, it would hurt but he still had full range of motion. None of this kept him from feeling genuinely insulted when Oren asked him if he would help. He was here helping wasn't he? There wouldn't be much point to leaving now that they were here just out of a petty grudge against Oren.

He clicked his teeth, biting back any retorts, took a breath to calm down but still ground his teeth as he spoke. "We'll need to rely on ourselves then. If they were contaminating the whole water supply we'd best head for some water treatment plant or something. Did either of you think to find a map before we came down here?"

Nash stepped in before any legitimate fights could occur, her calm mood and the assurance of her voice was enough to cause the Knight from giving in to a bit of his anger towards the man. His shoulders would slump slightly, as he let out a tough sigh. Why did these things have to go so tough? They were supposed to be on the same team after all.

He would peer towards the empty city as Ash mentioned heading to the water treatment plant. It was a good idea in theory, but he felt it was sort of elementary. "Don't you think they would have checked that already?" He'd ask with a pointed response, "I believe it's hidden away in the reservoir under the city." The idea was sound enough, and seemed to make the most sense to the Jedi. It would take months maybe years to find if no one knew where to look.

He would peer towards Nash, "What do you think?"

"Don't make me spray you both with water," she warned, somewhat jokingly... but she had no idea what was bothering Ash. Whatever it was could wait until they were all out of harm's way. As it was, she already had a bad feeling about this. She could feel eyes prickling on her back... and yet, when she would glance back, there would be nobody.

Spooky.

"If it is, then that's a lot of ground to cover,"
she frowned, glancing between the two of them. "We'd have to split up to cover more ground. And if the kid is any indication..." she gestured to the boy on the ground, "We'd be safest sticking together. Ash?" She glanced back to the other knight, head cocked. "Any suggestions?"

No, Ash thought, he didn't think they had checked there already. Which was part of the reason he had suggested it. Saying all that however wouldn't get them anywhere, so he just blew a breath out of his nose and said, "Even if that were the case and the eponymous 'they' had checked the treatment plant, we might find something different. And, if you are right and they have checked it and then we decide to go with your idea anyway, where do you think the treatment plant draws from? If we want to get to the source of the water without going sewer diving, our best bet is either getting a map from a technician of all the pipes, or finding the right pipe ourselves." He rasped.

He looked towards Nashyr when he mentioned sewer spelunking, being a bit racist in the assumption that the cat girl wouldn't want to get down and dirty in the sewer water and enjoy all the smells down there. Not that anyone would really enjoy that anyway.

Ash may be able to maintain a semi-professional attitude, but nothing could stop the snark. "So, fearless leader." He turned his nose up slightly at Oren, "What do you think of that?" He then blinked, clenched his fist and let out a breath. "I'm sorry Oren, this isn't the time for my attitude. Nashyr's right though," He gave the woman a nod, "We shouldn't split up. We may all be capable individually but lets not take any chances. I still think the treatment plant is the best option, but I'm open to more ideas." He finished, while making a visible effort to reign himself in. He wasn't usually this upset, seems it just snuck up on him.

Oren would listen to the both of them, nodding in agreement. It was unlikely they would be able to cover the expansive ground of the complex by themselves, and the potential dangers of being alone with these ghouls and the droids was too much of a risk. The knight would form a small smile on his lips as he held out a hand towards the two of them, "I believe in the three of us," he would nod.

"You both bring up excellent points, the plant may not be the source of the infection, but the pipe systems should lead us along a trail into the water reserves. I recommend we start there, and see if we can gather any information on the sewer system..We avoid the quarantine droids and try not to hurt that many infected people. Sound like a plan?"

He would lead the group down the eerie street, his hand resting against his blade as they passed numerous barricades that read 'QUARANTINE'. Buildings seemed to be taped over and shadows and thuds could be heard throughout. "It seems the whole lower city is infected." He'd say in a soft tone, "Why would gangsters care about doing this?"

It didn't matter now, those who survived would need that water system taken care of. They would approach the torn down gates of the plant system, Oren would quickly count ten to fifteen droids stationed around the area. "Seems they're trying to keep people from getting in...or keeping something from getting out." He would peer back towards the group, "How do we want to handle this?"

"...Maybe it's more than gangsters." She answered this quietly. It seemed like too big a scale for a mere gang to just up and do; there was something missing from the equation. Something it seemed Oren had a feeling about... well, it made sense, he was the last one here. And if the Rangers were involved in investigating this, then it was a bit bigger than some poorly manufactured and distributed spice.

From what she could recall, children were hardly given spice, even in some extreme environmental circumstances.

"We need a distraction," she answered honestly, holding up her blaster and looking between Oren and Ash. "I can act as that while the two of you find an entry point, and then fight my way through to meet up within. Unless someone else wants to be bait?"

She glanced between the two knights, head cocked. She wasn't one to sit idle, and the less time they spent discussing ideas and plans the quicker, and easier things could be, she reasoned internally.

Then again, she had no idea what could be causing this... and if Oren thought it was an infection of some kind...

Are we at risk as well?
