Rao Jor hurried down the steps of the Jedi Temple on Yavin IV, caught in the shadow cast by the massive ziggurat, mind racing with excitement.

The day had begun like any other. The young Iridonian had been going about his training, his meditations, and his scoffs at the other Initiates' lunch break shenanigans, when one of his instructors had pulled him aside and informed him that he was expected at the gazebo overlooking the edge of the jungle, an hour before sundown. There had been no mention of who expected him there or what he was needed for, but that only made the prospect that much more intriguing to Rao Jor. Whatever it was, it had ripped him out of the monotony of the temple life and removed him from his fellow Initiates, even if only for an afternoon. And he appreciated that.

Determination creased the Iridonian's boyish features. Although he did his best to stiffle the thought, he couldn't help but wonder. He had been called away from the other Initiates once before and presented with the opportunity of training under a mentor, but for reasons unknown to him it fell through. In the ensuing months, he had read meaning into contexts that didn't exist. His mind would observe an instructor approaching him an convert it into 'this is it, someone's gonna train me'. But everytime, without fail, that had not been the case. And now, more than half a year later, he was once again wondering whether he was reading too much into the situation.

"Non-attachment sweetens the outcome, whatever it may be," he said between huffs of air, slowing his pace now that the gazebo at the edge of the temple clearing was closer. That was easier said than done, though. It had been years since he left his Clan. Years since he was initiated. Since then, he had trained and learned and witnessed the Jedi Order go through trials and tribulations at the hands of the resurgent Sith Order. By sheer luck, he had been kept away from the tragedies that had befallen them, like the loss of Ajan Kloss and the battles that had seen the death of Jedi whose names and achievements were spoken of with awe and reverence amongst the Temple Initiates.

But Rao Jor was not an Initate anymore - at least he didn't think of himself as one. He was ready to join the fight and assist his brothers and sisters.

Coming up on the gazebo, the young Iridonian spied a figure, silhouetted in the shadow of the structure's thatched roof. His heart beat faster, but he controlled his breath to keep his pulse steady. His ability of being calm and collected and not allowing excitement to ruin his manners set him aside from the other Initiates. It was an asset he knew how to cultivate, a skill that had been necessary to learn quickly and early where he came from. The figure was decidedly that of a Human woman, but not one whose signature in the Force or physical appearance Rao Jor recognized. She had her back to him, so he knocked gently on the exposed wooden beams at the gazebo's entrance and waited.

The Light beat in time with her heart. The Force flowing seamlessly through her soul and the soul of Yavin. A path shone clearly in all the futures she saw. The Order marching ceaselessly towards the past…forgetting all the lesson they once knew. Suffering…pain…Darkness. They became Generals that were never meant to be. Warriors when Light sought healing. Alex saw those changes in herself. She made compromises that never should have crossed her mind. She drew her Lightsaber before seeking peaceful resolution. The path felt inevitable. There was but a small branch where the future changed. A way to preserve the Order and avoid the mistakes of the past. Alex saw the steps clearly but wondered if she possessed the will to take them. The Jedi Master preached peace and healing. Her practices were becoming much different.

Slowly, she returned her mind to the present. Her eyes focusing on the swatches of jungle before her. Maiko would not need her much longer. The Trials of Knighthood sought her young Padawan. Before long, he would be a full-fledged Jedi Knight. Even now, her student spent time on his own, flexing his independence. She trusted him but her duty was to the Order. There were others who needed guidance. It was time Jedi Master Alexandria Voran took another student. The Force shifted as she heard the knock. A small smile crept up her face. Ah. It was time. She turned slowly to set eyes on Rao.

Alex did not move from her spot at the edge of the gazebo. Rather, she beckoned the young Jedi forward. “Do you know why you have been called here, young one?” Her voice was soft and light. Alex was the consummate teacher, her soul folding into that roll after Max passed. “The galaxy changes and your time behind these Temple walls is ending.” She wondered if Rao was ready. The Council seemed to agree but she would need to judge for herself.

Rao Jor stepped under the cover of the gazebo, careful not to step too close to the woman. He kept a respectful distance while she spoke. There seemed to be a wistful tinge to the soft quality of her voice. She seemed worldly, despite her unmistakingly Jedi-like appearance, something which was underscored by the matter-of-fact way in which she spoke. And it felt different, somehow. This entire situation. Different than the last time.

In spite of that, the young Iridonian couldn't stop himself from thinking I've heard that before. He didn't say it, but he could feel how on edge his body had become once it became clear that he had been correct in his assumption of what the meeting was about. He cleared his throat. "I'm honored," he said, standing straight, hands clasped at the small of his back. He was trying his best to keep a neutral expression on his face. "I've prepared to leave the Temple for a long time. I'm ready to learn whatever you have to teach me, Master-" he hesitated, looking expectantly at the woman, whose name he didn't know.

Ah. She would need to go used to this. Maiko was a bubbling pot always pouring forth. Her young student was a kind soul but terrible at hiding his feelings. He was an open book. Alex had simply gotten used to always knowing what was on young Maiko’s mind. It would clearly be different with Rao. She needed to reminder herself they were not all cut from the same cloth. “Voran.” She answered in response to his question. “But please, call me Alex.” The Jedi Master smiled broadly. “There is no need for formality when it is just the two of us.” There was a time and a place for Master Voran and she wore that mantel well. However, Alex never believed such formal titles were necessary when teaching. They were going to unknown hurdles together. Rao might as well call her by her first name.

Small ripples of anxiety waved in the Force. “I can hear the vibrations of nerves in the Force…are you prepared?” It was not an accusation but a simple question. “We will walk this path together, but the destination is not mine.” She took a few steps forward, closing the distance between them. “Do you feel ready?” An important question for any young Jedi to face. “I want to teach you what you want to learn, not what silly things I feel are important.” Alex turned to gesture out at the jungle. “Tell me Rao, what is it you wish to learn?” She was a conventional Jedi but not a conventional Master. She believed in experiences and letting the Force dictate their journey together.

"Very well," Rao Jor said. "Alex, then." While his tone adopted a modicum of his new Master's informality, his posture remained the same. Formalities, protocolls, they established order in the chaos, made it easier for the young Iridonian to read the world around him. In his experience there were too many things to consider otherwise, too many situations he had to interpret individually. But he did not want to seem ill-mannered by ignoring Master Voran's request.

He thought about Voran's questions for a moment before answering: "I think I'm as prepared as I can be, Ma- Alex. I'm nervous, but I don't think that's out of place in my current situation. It is a step into the unknown." The second question was a great deal harder to answer. Eventually, he said: "I think it's too early for me to know for sure. I want to contribute. I want to find and earn my place next to my fellow Jedi. I'd be lying if I said I didn't crave the many martial aspects of Knighthood, but I know that's a very youthful thing to feel." He looked Master Voran in the eyes. "Maybe you can help me figure out what I want?"

Alex smiled. She could sense how uncomfortable the informality made Rao. Good. Nothing was ever learned by being comfortable. The bond of Master and Apprentice was unique. She could not uphold her end of the bargain if Rao kept her at arm’s length. She smiled. She would ware him down eventually. “Nerves are natural.” The Morellian Master gestured around them again. “I’ve been a Jedi nearly seventy years and I still feel bubbles of nervousness when leaving the safety of the Temple. We never know what path the Force may set us on.”

Alex took a few steps closer. “Well, I can’t teach you anything behind these walls…at least nothing you do not already know.” There was only one true path to discovery what type of Jedi Rao might become. The galaxy provided a wealth of learning opportunities. She had never taught a student in a classroom, and she never would. Hololessons were important but Jedi were forged outside the Temple. “Pack your bags and meet in the hangar in 30 mins. Don’t be late.” She ran a hand through her short hair.

“We have diplomatic negotiations ongoing with New Alderaan regarding a safe haven.” Her voice carried clearly over the short distance between them. “You and I are going to close the deal.” Alexandria Voran believed in her students. She believed in their success, and they could only succeed if given the chance. She would be there just in case they fell off that path.

"What?" Rao Jor blurted out. The ease with which his new Master had already issued her first task for him had taken him aback. Immediately, he regretted his outburst. He collected himself and said: "I mean, of course, Ma- Alex. I'll meet you in the hangar." He nodded respectfully, waited for her nod of dismissal, and turned on his heels, walking briskly towards the temple.

His mind raced while he packed his belongings. Diplomatic negotiations? Really? That wasn't what Rao Jor had imagined when he thought of his first time as a Padawan. Of course, negotiation was a necessary skill for a Jedi to learn. And he had a feeling that Master Voran was very competent in that field. But why she would choose to go there with him, knowing not whether he was at all capable to act accordingly and participate without jeopardizing the negotiations, that was a mystery to him. He hoped that he could live up to the task.

Shortly thereafter, he found himself in the hangar, approaching Master Voran. While doubt had his mind racing, his demeanor was calm as always, unwilling as he was to show his uncertainty. He cleared his throat.

"Alex. I'm ready to go."

“It’s fine Alayna, we will be gone for a handful of days at most.” Alex smiled at the young Jedi Knight. Her assistant was talent in the Force but a greater wizard at managing an increasingly complex schedule. “I understand Master Voran…but to take an unknown into the meeting is ill advised.” The Morellian Councilor laughed. She had encouraged Alayna to be honest with her. Forthrightness was important. An attribute that should be encouraged. “I know what I’m doing dear.” The young Jedi seemed to remember who she was speaking with, and her eyes shot down for a moment. “Now, please send word ahead I’ll be brining an extra set of eyes.” Alayna bowed. “Of course.” Alex nodded as her assistant ran off.

Her newest student rang against her senses. Alex stood at the bottom of the ramp leading into her shuttle. “Right on time.” She beaconed Rao to follow her up the ramp. “What do you know about New Alderaan?” She started to walk into the bellow of the shuttle. “Hopefully, we are giving you all some useful information in those stodgy old classrooms.” She probably should have known what the Padawan’s were being taught. She used to know but now her schedule was beyond her control. Little information seemed to slip by.

The Councilor quickly found the cockpit, sliding into the pilot’s seat. One deep breath and the Force filled her heart. She grabbed the yoke and motioned against for Rao to sit beside her. Hopefully he knew a little about their destination.
