“This place is wild and untamed. It stirs the blood and makes one feel…alive.”
― Juhani

Right on cue, the view blurred and shifted into the more familiar starscape of the galactic backdrop. Below was Kashyyyk, a patchwork sphere in green and blue hanging off the starboard bow. It was still a beautiful world, but even now, you could see that it had seen hard times. The scars of orbital bombardment were still visible, so very long after they had been inflicted. Fiach imagined the smoke that must have risen from those burning forests.

Fiach employed the scout ship’s advanced sensors to scan the space around the planet. It was dense with signals, but not much traffic. Her brief was simple, to deliver medical supplies and leave. Routine and, she hoped for once, no more than that.

She punched in the coordinates for the rendezvous and took the ship down towards the planet’s surface, aware that the small craft was particularly noisy and put it down to the turbulence of entry.

Swooping over the green hills below, she closed in on the coordinates given to her and immediately wished the annoying noise was still bothering her. For instead, all she heard was an eerie silence. “Looks like I’m going to be pushing this thing home,” she said out loud – to nobody in particular, and angled the ship for a shallow and unpowered descent.

Fortunately the location was free of the typical forest, jungles and mountains and although she overshot the location for the drop, she was able to land the ship relatively unscathed and unbuckled her belt. “So, check the ship, then make the rendezvous?” she mused, before shaking her head. “Nope. Best get the medicines to the locals first.”

And with that she loaded the supplies on a repulsor sled and once the small cargo bay door was opened, she began the long walk back the way the ship had come.

Kegari heard a sound unfamiliar for visitors to come, after all it was a deserted planet. Armed with her blaster pistol she crafted herself she quietly made her way out to the premises where she was greeted with a ship and to her knowledge was a human delivering medical supplies.

“Kegari” the voices came again, this time as a haunting whisper. She couldn’t make out the voices in her head. She blocked them out and made her way out to the ship still unsure and untrusting of the human species.

“Kegaaaarriii” the voices lingered again. She tried too hard to fight the voices but they always came back. She closes her eyes to try and block them out again. Upon opening them, she was then at the ship and greeted with a human female. Kegari was still skeptical of humans, but her intuition told her that this particular one told her that she means no harm. In fact she came to deliver medical supplies.

Bowing to the human female, Kegari thanked her for delivering the supplies.

“Thank you, the citizens of our planet appreciate your generous act of service”. Kegari smiles at the human while a rush of visions flashed before her. Kegari presses her temples and rubs them to ease her headache.

She then apologized and tried to explain her situation. She couldn’t understand her migraines and they always seemed to hit during the most inconvenient times.

“I really need to do something about those migraines”. Kegari muttered to herself as she opened her eyes and looked around her. She looks down just in case they came on again.

Kegari then looked up as soon as she felt good enough to do so. She was unsure of what was going on inside her head. The voices, the migraines, the way they talked to her like they knew her, as if she was connected to them somehow.

She sighed knowing that there was no one that could help her figure it out. It wasn’t like she was sick and needed a doctor it was a weird feeling. Before another migraine hit she began to head back to her sand cave.

Fiach was in some way surprised that the person that greeted her was not a Wookiee. But only a little — given they lived in such a cosmopolitan galaxy and she was the prime example of someone who grew up on a planet she was not native to. So, she did not bat an eye when the Chiss bowed and thanked her for the supplies. Fiach returned the bow and straightened to give the recipient of the supplies her usual broad smile.

There was something amiss, Fiach could sense it, but being just a Padawan was often aware of things that were slightly off, without truly understanding the why or the how. But the Force was definitely trying to tell her something. Not in a deliberate and direct way, but in a somewhat oblique and inscrutable way. She’d sensed this sort of sensation before — and the scenario hadn’t ended well.

“Are you OK,” Fiach asked, as the young woman began to leave with the medical supplies. “I can’t help but notice that you seem distressed. Have your migraines been addressed by a doctor, or are they something you’ve suffered from and self-diagnosed?”

Kegari looked at the human and nodded.. she was unsure of her motives. She sensed that the human wanted to help but heavens she try to help a species unknown to her. Kegari is always skeptical of everyone, ever since she was abandoned at birth.

“I’m not sure...They just come in waves. They go away and then they return and when they return it’s always worse than the last. And then the... the visions and the voices they seem.. so real”. Kegari explained. She was still a bit uneasy. She just didn’t know, why or how. “I haven’t seen a doctor, I was abandoned at birth and was banished off to this planet. It’s all I’ve ever known”.

Kegari knew she wasn’t sick, so a doctor wasn’t warranted, but she also wanted to know what was going on inside her head. Perhaps there’s a better explanation. But she didn’t know who knew the answers. “Do you know who could explain these migraines to me”? Kegari asked, she was sure that there had to be an answer to the migraines. What else did she have to lose? She thought to herself.

Fiach listened intently, nodding as the young woman spoke. Finally, when she was sure the woman had finished speaking, she pursed her lips before returning them to her regular smile.

“I am no doctor,” Fiach began, “but that does not mean I cannot in some way help. I am genuinely sorry to hear that you were banished from your home world and left here to fend for yourself. But I commend you for your fortitude and your resilience in such adversity.”

“But back to your headaches. Were they just headaches, I would definitely have advised seeking medical help. But the addition of visions and voices, that either requires very specialist help or it may be something I can assist you with.”

“Tell me, did any of these visions come true. I mean, did you imagine something that later actually happened?”

Kegari couldn’t remember much about her visions, but she did see that most times her visions did come true. At least some of them did.

“From what I can remember they did, a lot of times I can’t really remember what happened. But the voices I do remember as if they were real and they were talking directly to me”.

The more she pondered on it, the more intense they became just like the one time in her vision she saw a droid taking her away from what looked like her mother. Which could be her getting banished from her planet.

“I appreciate the sentiment, this planet is all I’ve ever known. I don’t know my real family or anything of my home planet, Pantora. Only in visions is that I’ve seen my home planet”.

She hears of Force sensitive beings but she wasn’t sure that she too could possibly possess such an extraordinary ability. She is a lost villager, there’s no way that an abandoned lost Pantoran villager could be Force sensitive.

“Could I possibly be Force sensitive”? Kegari asked.

Fiach nodded, she was by no means a doctor and although her understanding of the Force far surpassed the average person, she was hardly an expert.

“There are tests that can be done, to prove one way or another,” she replied. “They involve a blood test – but from what you have told me, I suspect I already know the outcome.”

Fiach closed her eyes and drew the Force in close to her. She felt calm and centred. Then, using the Force, she sensed her surroundings. It formed a form of three-dimensional map in her mind. Non-living things showed up dark and living things, that by definition had the Force flowing through them, were light. And standing in front of her was the shape of the young woman – a veritable beacon of light against her surroundings.

“I’d stake credits on you being Force sensitive – not that I gamble. Or have credits…but you get the idea. The question is, what do you want to do about it? Do you wish to be trained?”

Kegari looked at the woman and nodded. Of course she wanted to be trained, she didn’t want to her “gift” to go to waste. But she wasn’t sure how to go about it. This planet didn’t offer anything other than screaming Wookies and well, that’s about it. But she would have to leave her “family” behind. She would miss them for sure but if it meant for the greater good of the Galaxy then she would leave.

“Yes, I would like to be trained” Kegari replies unsure of what was to come next. If she was betting credits on her being Force sensitive then it must be a good thing right? Or not? Ugh the war that went on in her head was just as bad as the headaches that came and went.

“I don’t have any credits, but I’m going to presume that if you were going to place a bet on me being Force sensitive, well you are willing to bet credits on it”. Kegari added.

Kegari smiles as grabbed her things and dusted off her pants, for whatever reason she didn’t know. A nervous tick so to speak. Well I should tell my Wookie family goodbye.. Kegari thought to herself. She didn’t know where she was going but she wanted to prepare herself when she really did have to leave.

Fiach's usual smile broadened. "I'm glad to hear it. For one thing, a lack of training can be dangerous to you and others. Secondly, there are those that may look to use your gifts to their own end and - untrained - you would find it very difficult to resist them."

"In terms of training, there are not so many choices. The way I offer is not everybody's path. It is the way of the Jedi. If you accept, you will learn to use the Force for good, in a selfless way. And, as a rule, we are selfless in most respects. We are not wealthy or powerful and swear an oath of sorts to protect the weak. Does this sound like something you would be prepared for?"

"And do not worry, you can change your mind at any time - there is no contract other than between the Force and your heart."

Kegari was aware that without any kind of training that her “gift” could do more harm than good. She listened to the woman and sighed, she’s heard of the stories about the Jedi and what they stood for. But she had thought they all had been wiped out off the Galaxy.

“It sounds great, I’ve heard stories about the Jedi and how they used their Force power for the good of the Galaxy, but I’ve also heard that they were wiped out years ago. I mean I’m sure there’s still a whole bunch of Force users undiscovered as you have found me. But I honestly didn’t think there were still Jedi that were actually living”. Kegari confessed when all she’s ever known was Wookies and this planet, she didn’t even know her family if she even had one. But what did she know, all she’s heard were stories. She didn’t know facts from fiction, she could be wrong and there could still be Jedi that are alive and walking this Galaxy.

“I’m sure my training will help the Jedi, say I actually become one. I’m sure it’s a tough life to live but it can’t be any tougher than being abandoned and left to fend for yourself in a lost planet”. Kegari added she agreed to be trained in the ways of the Jedi.

Fiach smiled. When she was discovered to be Force-sensitive, she believed the stories of Jedi were fairy-tales – and still understood that to be the case on many worlds and for many, many people. There were also many misconceptions about who they were and what they did. But now was not the time for lessons – in case they sounded more like a lecture.

“We believe we do good,” Fiach responded. “Strictly, I’m not a Jedi yet. I’m a Padawan and it is not until I read a level called a Knight that I can call myself a Jedi. A Padawan is just another name for an apprentice. And very experienced Knights are known as Masters.”

“And our numbers are small compared to before the Empire, but we are growing again – slowly but surely. And with training, I’m sure you’ll make a fine Jedi.”

“Do you have to say any good-byes, or did you want to stay here awhile and I come back at a later date to collect you?”

Kegari smiles and nodded as she listened to the woman. She was hopeful that there was still Jedi who believed that they were doing good for the Galaxy. But she hasn’t officially been named a Jedi, at least not yet.

Padawan well until they get promoted to Knight. But she knew it wasn’t time to train she better say her goodbyes now, because who knows when she will be back here. Kegari sighed as she knew this was going to be hard. “I will say my goodbyes now”. Kegari replies as she walked out of her cave with tear filled eyes and hugged her Wookiee “family”.

“Arrrggghhh”? The Wookiee frowned and asked her why she was leaving. “It’s okay Purrow, I will be back. Someday”. Kegari held back tears after she said someday, she didn’t know when someday was even if there is a someday. Kegari then hugged her Wookiee friend and took the ancient crystal necklace off of her neck and handed it to Purrow. “Keep it, wear it, store it away, do whatever you want with it but you will always have this to remember me by”. Kegari placed it in her furry hands and weeped, she didn’t know how hard this would be. She then regained her composure and sighed.

Purrow then took the necklace and placed it around her neck, and put her arms around Kegari and hugged her tightly.“Arrrrgggggh” Purrow bade her farewell and told her “May the Force Be With You”. And with that Kegari waved goodbye to Purrow and then the rest of her Wookiee family.

Kegari looked to the woman and joined her to board her ship that brought her here.

Fiach kept a respectful distance from the good-byes. She did not do emotions at the best of times, and from what she remembered and understood, leaving was an occasion when tears and happiness and sadness were at the fore.

She kept her smile on her lips and nodded if anyone spoke to her - given she did not speak the native language, she was limited in her potential interaction.

"You'll have to teach me how to speak Wookiee," she said to Kegari as they reached the small cargo bay doors, that opened and allowed them to walk onto the ship. "You can start as we journey to the Jedi Order headquarters. And I'm guessing you haven't been into space since you arrived here?"

Kegari walked into the spacecraft and sighed, this is the first time she’s ever been in a ship in her entire life. “Well I kinda picked up on the language when you’ve lived with Wookiees your entire life”. Kegari added, she wasn’t sure where they were headed but she was eager to find out. “No I haven’t been in a spacecraft ever. I don’t travel much, in fact this may be the first time I’ve traveled anywhere”. Kegari added, she would never tell her that she was nervous about it. She didn’t know what to expect.

Kegari was clueless about space travel, she didn’t even know how to power up a ship or let alone operate one. She also didn’t know the Jedi Order had their own headquarters, she knew they were a large group, but never realized how big. But there’s a lot to be learned, especially from being a lost villager in a planet for Wookiees.

Kegari, The Force is strong with you”. As soon as she sat down on the passenger seat of the spacecraft Kegari heard voices and along with the voices visions came. She couldn’t make out the voices or the vision either as it was gone in a flash.

Kegari looked back up at the window and sighed. She wasn’t sure if the voices in her head and visions are trying to tell her something.

Fiach walked through to the cockpit of the small craft and indicated Kegari should take the seat next to her. It was a ship best defined as a large scout or a very small freighter. It was capable of hyperspace travel, manoeuvrable and sported a small cargo bay. And it was designed to be piloted by a single member of crew, but had a second seat in the cockpit.

“I know what you mean,” Fiach said. “I grew up on Klatooine and so I picked up Klatooninan and Huttese as well as Basic. Maybe we can teach each other some key words and phrases as we travel. It’s not a very long journey, and it may seem a strange experience initially, but you’ll get used to it quickly enough I’m sure. Like you, I didn’t travel off my planet until I was in my late teens. Since then I think I’ve been making up for lost time.”

Fiach punched in the relevant coordinates, did a routine check of systems and then took off. “I will pilot us into orbit and then the ship’s computer will guide us through hyperspace.”

“Is there anything about the Jedi you’d like me to tell you about?”

Kegari looked as Fiach punched in the coordinates and sighed she wasn’t sure what to ask.

“Do you think they will look at me funny”? Kegari asked unsure of what to make of the other Jedi and being a Pantoran she still wasn’t sure what people would think although she’s sure that Jedi came in all races and species. She still had her doubts.

“Oh and well how to speak Wookiee well at first I read a lot into body language and then I kinda picked up on it, Purrow taught me a lot about the language too. I’m gonna miss her”. Kegari sighed.

She was gonna miss her home, but honestly her home is Pantora and she knew nothing about it. She was hopeful that she would see it one day. Maybe see her real family, but she was going to be a Jedi she would have to put that behind her. No matter how hard it would be.

“OK,” Fiach responded, “the coordinates are locked. Prepare for lightspeed.”

Instantly, the the stars ahead turned into streaks and to Fiach, a familiar unreal tunnel opened up around the ship. With a well-tuned whine, the ship and its two passengers rocketed into hyperspace.

Once she set the ship onto auto-pilot, Fiach turned to face Kegari. “Nobody will look at you at all in a funny way. Jedi come in all shapes, sizes and species. The Force dictates who becomes a Jedi, not any notion of a race being suitable or not. Trust me, you’ll fit right in.”

“And I don’t miss my parents as such. They know what I am doing is valuable and I can always visit them if I wished. It’s not like the old days of the Jedi where we were not permitted to have relationships like that. All we have to do is ensure they don’t get in the way of making the right decision.”

Kegari held on to the armrests as the ship went into lightspeed. She wasn’t prepared at all for this. She didn’t know how ships worked or how hyperspace travel worked.

She felt a little relived after she heard that, she knew that there’s a lot to learn. Especially now that the rules have changed.

“I’m not special though, I’m not a Skywalker so why did the Force choose me”? Kegari asked still unsure of how the Force works. She knew that the visions and the voices all led up to something but she didn’t know exactly what. She was scared and unsure, and somehow this will one day all make sense.

Or she will learn to make sense of it, it all seems kind of strange now. She was still a bit naive but she will learn. Everything.

She didn’t are ask but she was curious how the Jedi got their lightsabers all she knew about them is that they were crafted in a kyber crystal cave. She’s crafted weapons before but nothing to the magnitude or dignity of a lightsaber. She hasn’t even seen a lightsaber let alone craft one.

“Soon enough, Kegari” Kegari said to herself as the traveled through hyperspace. “Soon Enough”. The voices agreed with Kegari as she talked to herself. She still wasn’t sure of the voices, but she would find out.

Soon Enough.

The journey through hyperspace was interesting initially, but after a few seconds, the patterns were no more than that…patterns. Of course, for a first-timer like Kegari, the time to boredom would be slower.

“Nobody knows who is chosen or why. Once upon a time there were thousands of Jedi, literally thousands. Spread across the galaxy and all doing their part to uphold democracy and protect the weak. In a sense, we’re all special – but in another sense we’re all the same. None of us are likely to ever play a role like the Skywalkers did – at least not individually. But together, we make a real difference.”

Kegari listened as Fiach spoke, she had no real intention to be as amazing as the Skywalkers as they made history. She knew she would never be able to be as they were, but the Force must have thought she was special or it wouldn’t have spoken to her.

“So the Jedi are all special in some way”? Kegari asked although she hasn’t really figured out her purpose in the Galaxy. She was eager to find out and because of that it make the journey that much longer.

Fortunately, the ship was moving in autopilot and in light-speed. But she had no idea how much more they had to go until they reached their destination.

Pondering on the thought of whatever awaited her at her destination she knew that she was destined for something extraordinary.
