DESCRIPTION
The 578-R space transport is a freighter model originally manufactured by the Amalgamated Hyperdyne & Refuse Management corporation. Seen as the product solely responsible for Amalgamated Hyperdyne's bankruptcy, the 578-R had legendarily poor quality control during its original production run, with freighters coming off the line missing vital components such as hyperdrive motivators and view-port seals. The ship was subject to numerous safety recalls, and ultimately cost its manufacturer billions of credits.

In the present day, the 578-R has below-average specs. With a crew of 2 and a passenger capacity of 10, the ship can carry 40 tons of cargo and has consumables for up to 4 months in space. It is protected by a medium deflector screen, and has a single fixed medium laser cannon. Performance is poor, with a top speed of 40 MGLT and a class 3 hyperdrive.

Needless to say, 578-Rs are no longer made, although some beings feel they are unfairly maligned. Those examples which survive into the present day - those which survived apathetic line workers, rounds of recalls and accidents - have proven to be tough, reliable vessels, and are easy to maintain, repair and modify. Despite already being centuries old, the relative handful that still exist are projected to have long service lives ahead of them.

LEGALITY
Legal. Light freighters such as the 578-R are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and are not restricted in most systems.

INTENT
To create a standard civilian transport.
