DESCRIPTION​

The 500-series platform is a common, mass-produced model of space station produced by the Consolidated Hulls Corporation of Corellia. Originally one of the company's flagship products, it is currently out of production, and most 500s date back as far as the Imperial Republica. The simple, durable construction of these stations has ensured that a respectable number remain in service even after over 6 millennia, mainly on the fringes of Galactic civilization.

The 500-series platform is a fairly basic design, meant to be produced cheaply, quickly and in great numbers. The type is most commonly used as a deep-space way-station, and mainly functions as a way to break up the longer stretches of hyperlanes that crisscross the Galaxy. Their facilities are fairly limited, consisting chiefly of 8 external docking rings and associated refueling probes. These docking rings are located at the ends of 4 long booms radiating out from a central hub. Inside the hub are various amenities, including up to 12 medium-sized commercial spaces - typically containing at least 1 restaurant and 1 small hotel - along the outer concourse, which has a panoramic view of space through large transparisteel view-ports. Deeper inside is the inner concourse, which typically contains information kiosks, public holonet terminals, vending machines, hologames and refreshers. Up to 120 travelers can be accommodated on the station at once, although this number is almost never reached.

Located on the deck above - accessible by a bank of turbolifts in the central concourse - is the station's administrative block, which contains most of the duty stations and off-duty accommodations for the station's 6-12-being crew. Facilities include an aerospace control department for guiding in approaching ships, a service department which oversees the refueling and restocking of docked ships, an emergency services department which provides basic medical care and operates the station's single shuttle for rescue operations, a station security department which maintains law and order on board and operates the single defensive turret, a maintenance division which repairs and maintains the station's systems, and a central administrative office which coordinates all departments. Most of the departments aboard the station have a bare minimum of staff, 1-2 each, which is often further minimized by the use of droid staff in place of organics, with some stations being effectively automated save a lonely administrator.

Below decks is a maze of service corridors, storage areas and machinery, the domain of maintenance personnel and service droids. Certain elements of criminal society have discovered that these sections are accessible and not very well monitored, making them the perfect location for secret meetings and exchanges of illicit goods.

500-series platforms proliferated across the Galaxy due in no small part to a public works initiative instituted under the first Empress Andraste following the Hundred-Year Darkness. The initiative, meant to rebuild the Galaxy's decaying travel infrastructure in the wake of over a century of war and neglect, placed thousands of space stations across the Galaxy in an effort to modernize and increase access to modern amenities. Although many more central and prosperous hyperspace routes and systems received much larger, grander constructions, countless less traveled and visited routes and worlds were given smaller, more basic stations; this was an improvement, as before there had often been nothing at all, or at the most severely outdated and often derelict stations. As CHC's 500-series was one of the more competitively priced options for local governments looking to take advantage of the subsidies, it became one of the most common, a boon for the company's profits and at least a token convenience for the Galaxy's travelers.

500-series platforms are still common in backrocket regions of the Galaxy, especially along the frontiers of the former Sith Empire. They are typically placed in deep space as a means of breaking up long, sparsely populated hyperspace routes, or can also be found in orbit above planets with limited orbital infrastructure and low levels of space traffic. In the present day, many of these ancient stations have long outlived their intended service lives, and their dingy, poorly maintained facades are seen as something of a blight on the starscape.

To create a common type of space station found in backwater regions of the Galaxy, primarily a stage for characters to meet and for role-plays to take place.

RESTRICTIONS​

500-series space stations are fairly common and quite old, but are not easy or cheap to obtain. They are typically faction assets, although they could also serve as the focal point of a player run business venture.
