DESCRIPTION
The Vanguard-class probe droid is an autonomous survey platform manufactured by Ferroprol Field Systems, a division of the Ferroprol Corporation. The type is primarily intended for scientific survey missions and military reconnaissance, and is sold to academics, independent scouts, law enforcement, military organizations and a host of other entities.

Vanguards are complex machines, fitted with a host of sophisticated sensory equipment and useful tools. They can be deployed from a base on a planet's surface, or alternatively from orbit, or even from deep space. In the two latter cases, the Vanguard makes use of a special deployment canister which is designed to protect the droid during atmospheric reentry. This canister also contains a sublight propulsion systems and a small class 10 hyperdrive, allowing the Vanguard to cross interstellar distances to reach its destination. Upon reaching the target planet, a Vanguard will mimic the trajectory of a natural meteor in order to disguise itself from undue scrutiny by any enemies and/or pre-hyperdrive civilizations that may be watching. After crash-landing, the droid will emerge from its canister and begin its mission.

Vanguards are capable of surveying a wide swath of territory, using a repulsorlift system for mobility. Equipped with a long-range communication suite, the droid can keep in touch with its masters many parsecs away, relaying data almost in real time. Equipped with a small specimen hopper, the Vanguard can be instructed to collect samples of local lifeforms or other material. Upon completion of its mission, it can signal for retrieval, or alternatively be instructed to use its self-destruct charge, which is designed to simultaneously prevent collateral damage and to leave no useful traces for enemies or primitive societies to discover.

Unlike some probe droids, the Vanguard is armed. For defensive purposes, the design incorporates an integrated blaster; on lethal settings, this weapon can be used to fend off hostile wildlife or personnel. The weapon also boasts a potent stun setting, useful for live specimen collection.

Vanguards are found in use across the Galaxy, although they primarily work on the frontiers, used by explorers pushing out the boundaries of known space. Statistically, the Vanguard is the first droid some 30% of the Galaxy's previously un-contacted cultures see.
