DESCRIPTION
So-called "Ugly" ships, that is to say spacecraft cobbled together from readily available and often mismatched parts, are a phenomenon which has existed for millennia at the fringes of Galactic society, but it is an "art" which arguably reached its zenith in the aftermath of the Galactic Civil War. Wrecked starships from both sides of the conflict were in plentiful supply, and many enterprising individuals looted old battlefields for any junk they could find. Some of the more technically minded scavengers cobbled their prizes together into unique creations of their own design, of which the TYE, or Twin Y-Wing Engine, is one common example.

Although no "Ugly" is truly the same as any other, the twisted logic behind the TYE - which is alternately known as the DIE fighter, Y-TIE or Why-Wing - has ensured that it is a reasonably common configuration for improvised starfighters. Combining the large engine pods of a Rebel BTL-A4 Y-Wing starbomber with the central cockpit pod of a TIE/LN starfighter, the TYE has slightly more speed than either of its progenitors, but otherwise compounds the weaknesses of both designs. Though it has more engines than either craft, they are tied into the standard TIE reactor, which struggles to provide power to both the TIE engine and the two Y-Wing engines, giving only in the neighborhood of a 5 MGLT in terms of extra speed. Maneuverability is also slightly hampered, with the various modifications to the nimble TIE frame effecting responsiveness and center of gravity. Further, the TYE sacrifices the Y-Wing's ordinance load, sticking the fighter with only the twin medium laser cannons of the TIE. Finally, most TYEs also do not carry a life support system, as with the TIE, and thus pilots must wear a full environmental suit in order to fly.

The TYE, owing to the wide availability of its component parts, is a common configuration for home-built and otherwise improvised starfighters. Although some rare examples are built with great care by talented engineers without access to better resources, most are built without much skill or care at all. As a result, they are almost universally of poor quality, leading to significant reliability issues. Though they are perfectly adequate for menacing a waylaid freighter or passenger liner, they are typically no match for proper starfighters or other warships without a truly skilled pilot at the controls.

TYEs and similar Ugly starfighters are most commonly built and used by pirates and other criminals, although private citizens and even some cash-strapped military and paramilitary agencies have been known to use them in the absence of anything better.

LEGALITY
Legal. Though they are technically starfighters, TYEs are considered to be home-built spacecraft under most jurisdictions, circumventing many restrictions.

INTENT
To create a standard, low-end starfighter.
