Eckaaso took a deep breath as he looked at the two Padawans in front of him: Somm, a Twi'lek, and Ke, a Blood Carver, a species that honestly he never heard about. They were in the large courtyard of the Jedi Temple of Ajan Kloss, all of them equipped with training lightsabers. He was accompanied by Byron, a fellow Knight who was a human. "Alright guys, today will be more of a test than an actual lesson, because I want to have a look at your dueling skills to evaluate your level of knowledge. I will duel with you" he said to Somm, "while Ke will duel with Byron. Ready?" He then turned on his lightsaber and went into the typical Shien ready stance with the reverse grip, holding the lightsaber in his right hand, and faced the Twi'lek, his eyes narrowing in challenge.

Somm glanced around the courtyard, taking in the architecture around him before settling his gaze upon the three others that he had joined for sparring practice. One was a human, the other two were species that he had never seen before, let alone knew the names of. The training saber felt light in his right hand, lighter than his own saber which was magnetically hooked to his belt.

The reddish brown skinned knight ignighted his saber and dropped into a stance that was unfamiliar, but not unknown to Somm. His yellow eyes were fixed, focusing on him, it made Somm feel rather nervous. He ignited his own saber and dropped into the brace ready stance of Soresu. He placed his right foot back and slightly extended his left. Gripping the hilt with both hands he held the blade vertically, his hands at wasit height guarding the right hand side of his body.

In all honesty, Byron didn’t know much about the situation. Only that Eckaaso had left a message informing him that he was to assist in sparring a pair of padawans. He supposed that was all he needed in a situation like this. To let the sparring do the talking. Learn of the other through the art of battle.

He took his training saber, feeling out the hilt. He looked over at the menacingly looking Jedi Knight. “Not even a hello, Eckaaso? I thought we knew each other better than that.” It was in jest. He knew what battle meant to a Kaleesh. It was more important than small-talk, more important than menial conversation, more important than life itself. If anything, he just hoped the Knight went a little easier on the Twi’lek.

“Hello, Ke,” he said, bowing his head at the Blood Carver. “Let’s enjoy this one, yes?” he asked, getting into stance.

@Byron Alduun,

Ke Eoto was still sitting on the cushioned mat of their sparring arena, going through the proper warm up and stretching techniques as recommended by their training codices, when Eckaaso signaled for the sparring to begin. The alien gave out a rumble of acknowledgement, his back bent backwards while doing a split, stretching his back and spine out in what would be uncomfortable if not impossible for a human.

"I am ready."

He confirmed as he rose himself up to stand in a dexterous, smooth motion. The Blood Carver bent forward, returning the bow to Byron,

"As much as one can en-joy, waa-king each other with light-saabers."

Ke Eoto croaked out, each strange syllable making the chitinous halves of his split beak quiver and shake lightly as they went up and down through intonations not suited for his vocal cords. Although the heavy accent and alien speech made it difficult to discern whether he meant his words in just or chiding, no malice rose up from within his pool of emotions. He grabbed the hilt of a staff lightsaber on his belt and raised it up, smoothly shifting into what the current iteration of Jedi understood to be a Shii-Cho stance, and activating a yellow blade of the training lightsaber.

Although he wielded a staff lightsaber for the exercise, he used just one blade. The choice was made out of comfort and handicap rather than search for upper hand against his opponent. The training lightsabers were designed for human anatomy, they were both too narrow and too short to suit Ke Eoto's fingers. The longer hilt of a staff lightsaber allowed him to wrap his grip around it at least more comfortably, as he possessed one more joint in his fingers than a human would.

His legs and arms shared similar property, with an extra joint and longer than that of a human, adorned with talons and powerful claws that were visible from beneath his protective hand and foot wraps. It was clear that Ke Eoto was a member of predatory species, much like Eckaaso. Unlike the Kaleesh, however, Blood Carvers were built for speed and agility rather than raw strength and aggression. Despite being taller than Byron by about quarter of a meter, the Blood Carver probably weight as much as the human did, and had similar amount of strength as a human.

Either way, as the Blood Carver waited for the sparring session to start, the chitinous plates on his face visibly begun to contract and shift, making his snout-like beak flatten against his skull and press together like a featureless golden mask.

The Kaleesh shot a brief glare at the human, but then he laughed softly, rolling his eyes shortly. "You're right Byron, although you know me. I'm never against a duel, and I'm even eager for them" he said, then quickly swung his lightsaber, the movement showing that he was aiming for the Twi'lek's neck. But it was relatively easy to party too, since Somm would just need to slightly move his blade to the left to block it. "I am Knight Eckaaso Shyn, Kaleesh warrior and blacksmith. I am, modestly, one of the best lightsaber combat instructors of the temple, and I have a dream: to become a Battlemaster, and to forge the best warriors the galaxy has ever seen, to the point of surpassing legends like the Skywalkers, master Yoda or master Windu."

The first attack was sudden, one moment he was joking with the Human Knight and the next the training blade was swinging towards him. The attack was high, the blade arcing through the air towards Somms neck or head. Almost too slowly, he moved his own blade across his body to parry the blow. He held the blade diagonally catching Eckaasos blade with the centre of his own, the two connected in a flash of light but Somm could feel the Knights strength behind the blow, it felt measured, a testing swing to see how he reacted.

He listened to Eckaaso speak, impressed by the Knights words. Somm felt rather humbled to be duelling with a true warrior, especially one who may be the best instructors within the Jedi. As the blades came apart Somm slipped his right foot forward and arced the training saber above his head sweeping his blade horizontally at the Kaleeshs head. It was a simple riposte but Somm didn’t know anything fancier.

Byron, unlike Shyn, wasn’t going to go on the offensive on a padawan. What were they going to learn from that? To deal with aggression, one must know how to deal with at least something.

Perhaps he had grown softer with age. Either way, he would wait for the Blood Carver’s first move.

“I shall be watching your stance, padawan,” he says, slowly stepping to his right, counter clockwise around Eoto. Each step was exact and precise. His training saber stood vertically in front of him, leaning towards the padawan.

He kept a reasonable distance from his opponent, ensuring that – once the padawan had chosen to attack – they would have to invade his space first.

@Turtleneck,

Byron would notice that Blood Carver's pale eyes flicked over in Shyn's direction upon hearing his modest boast and the insectoid's chitinous plates tightened. Perhaps Byron was aware of the aversion Blood Carvers have towards compliments. Their culture is obsessed with constant self-betterment and improvement to the point that receiving critique is highly sought after so that their flaws might be exposed and fixed, while compliments and boasts are seen as destructive and sinful indulgences that lead to stagnation. Ke Eoto's ancestor was forced into exile that took two decades before he redeemed himself after he accepted a compliment, by Blood Carver standards Shyn's words were worthy a death sentence.

Thankfully, they were not among Blood Carver's, and Ke Eoto's time with the Jedi tempered his aversion towards claims of prowess or receiving compliments, although it is not a custom that he has been willing to abandon. Still, he is more understanding towards others not knowing about what compliments mean to a Blood Carver and how critique is much more preferred by them.

Speaking of which, Byron's words snapped Ke Eoto out of his thoughts and those pale eyes focused on the human knight once more. He gave him a light nod, croaking out,

"I wel-come your ins-peection."

In confirmation as more energy was brought into his movements. Initially, it seemed that the Blood Carver was content with being on the defensive, waiting for strikes from Byron without giving away much through his movements. Now, his feet moved smoothly over the mat, circling him in diagonal patters as the sinewy limbs brought down his training lightsaber from the lightly angled vertical position, similar to the way Byron was holding his own saber, in a quick diagonal slash aimed for Byron's shoulder. As the blade traveled, a hum rose out from within Ke Eoto's gullet, mimicking the sound of the energy blade as it moved, and doing so again after the blades collided and he brought his own back to a guard stance before delivering another smooth, short slash, this time aimed at Byron's opposite flank.

As the Blood Carver performed a couple of probing slashes to get a gauge on Byron's speed and handling of his own weapon so that the knight's defensive techniques may be brought to scrutiny by the Padawan, his feet kept him at an arm's length away from the Knight. Ke Eoto was careful to not get too close to his opponent and keep him at range in which his longer limbs would give him an advantage.

The Kaleesh backed quickly at the Twi'lek's risposte, turning a bit clumsily the lightsaber to parry the hit. It was clear that Eckaaso wasn't practical with the Shien version of form V. Perhaps he was studying it and so he needed someone to practice it with, someone different from the training dummies.

"Your defence is decent. But you need to refine your attacks" he said while swinging again, this time aiming for Somm's waist. "Lightsaber fighting is both a martial art and an art. Consider it a dance. Many forms require a good amount of footwork to be effective, like Makashi, form two" he explained. After the attempt to hit Somm's waist, he'd strike another two times, aiming first for the alien't neck and then, after twirling his lightsabet to grab it normally, trying to stab him in the chest

Somm rotated on the ball of his right foot, movinf his left to twist his body as Eckaasos blade arced towards his midrif. He twisted his wrists uncomfortably, rotating his blade down barely catching his opponents swing. The blades parted and the Kaleeshs second attack came at pace. The blade swung towards Somms neck and the Twi'lek reacted.

Somm moved his right foot first, stepping wide and turning his body to face Eckaaso as his balde swung through the space where Somm had just been, he could feel the heat from the blades tip as it barely missed him. He lifted his left foot and planted it behind himself, mirroring his opening stance but with this balde held vertically on the left hand side of his body. However he wasnt prepared for the third and final attack. Somm twisted his writsts attempteing to bat away the tip of a ligtsaber that was arrowing towards his chest, but it was already inside his guard.

The impact sent him stumbling backwards two paces and winded him. He dropped to one knee, his head bowed and right arm raised above his head "I yield Master" He wheezed out as he attempted to catch his breath.

Now it was getting interesting.

It wasn’t often Byron was given the opportunity to be tested. Ever since he had gotten his Knighthood it had seemed as if the challenge had slowly begun dissipating. (He had often wondered why the Masters were slow, methodical in the movements. Not enough action and too much time spent on ancient text were probably the answers.) He had proven himself and succeeded, so what else was left?

A challenge of challenging another.

“Your speed is impressive,” he says, words gasping out between movements. The strikes, as committed as they were, were easy to defend. Particularly considering his experience in the field. Though providing the Blood Carver with the canvas to construct a strategy was working wonders. “Using your natural range to your advantage is excellent. Well done.”

For a human, Byron was rather lanky. Clearly not to the extent of Ke, but certainly above the norm for his species. He wasn’t going to match the padawan’s reach, but he could close the gap if necessary.

“Let’s see how you handle pressure,” he says, using the training saber to cover his approach. At once, he began on the offensive. Simple strikes, but ones that were mastered. The first, a diagonal strike coming downwards upon the Blood Carver’s right flank. Had he managed to block that? A sweeping slash towards the legs, from Byron’s left to right.

Ke Eoto tensed somewhat at the first compliment, the chitinous plates on his face straining against the bone-like structure under them at the second as their lightsabers clashed and showered them in bursts of light. While most Padawans would have appreciated the compliments on their saberwork, the Blood Carver was taught differently. To his people such compliments of his artform with the blade were mockery, threats that he has already achieved the peak of his skill and he will not improve from there. Irritation and petty need to prove to Byron and anyone watching that he has not achieved peek performance yet twisted and coiled within Ke Eoto, a pressure and drive that bordered on cool rage kept repressed down within him. The reflexive outrage clashed with his understanding that Byron most likely wasn't fully aware of what his words meant to the alien as their lightsabers clashed again.

The knight came at his side, thrice-jointed insectoid arms folded and swung, catching his opponent's blade in a clean block as dictated by the Shii-Cho teachings. The chitin and muscle around his eyes twitched and tensed visibly at the flash of light from the two weapons crashing together, he struggled and forced himself against the instinct to close his eyes or blink at the amounts of stimulation just being close to an energy blade was delivering. Before he could push the advantage and retaliate by turning the block into a parry and a riposte, Byron was swinging his blade towards his legs in a quick attack.

The alien shifted his feet and claws on the training mat, abandoning the Shii-Cho stance and technique as he swung the elongated hilt of his training lightsaber over his legs like a sword, chopping into the way of Byron's blade. Although the technique was similar to the Makashi style, it would have been foreign and unorthodox enough that the Jedi would have no name for it. The Blood Carvers, however, did.

As Byron could probably already tell by then, the Padawan had some sort of previous training before he joined the Order in some exotic and alien technique. The Carving, as his people called it was one of their forms of art-fighting, treating combat as if it was sculpting a piece of Blood Wood into a figurine, unleashing inner beauty by finding the faults and flow in the grain of their opponent. It was a form of patience, deliberation, scrutiny, and utilitarian strikes to either disable or end.

The middle section of Padawan's lightsaber met Byron's own weapon in the upper portion, a hold in which advantage was on the Blood Carver's side as it was easier in this arrangement for him to manipulate the Knight's sword with his rather than the opposite. Ke Eoto pushed himself off of his leg in the readied stance, propelling himself forward hopefully fast enough to get a drop on the Knight rather than be outmaneuvered once more. However, such a push came with its risks of being disengaged and openings being exploited, perhaps it was the fuming from Byron's earlier compliments that drove the Blood Carver onward.

As he closed the distance between them back, the Blood Carver would arch his lightsaber upward in a parry, attempting to swing their lightsabers locked together up, over their heads and then down to their other side, trapped together against one another and the tangling of their lanky arms in their proximity. If Ke Eoto would succeed in the maneuver, the two Jedi would find their bodies colliding together, shoulder to shoulder, with their lightsabers down and to the opposite side that Byron attacked Ke Eoto on. Then, in his act of riposte if his parry succeeded, the Blood Carver would snap his head forward into Byron's in a headbutt aimed to crack their two foreheads together, chitin against skin and bone.

The Kaleesh chuckled lightly as he turned off his training lightsaber and helped Somm back on his feet. "Never lower your guard, and always expect the unexpected. You could have used to your advantage my difficulty with Shien. That's the trick when you fight against anyone, may it be a friendly spar with a friend or a battle to death with your worst enemy: you need to analyze your opponent, find their weaknesses and strengths, and see how you could counter them with the knowledge you have. Only this way you can manage to survive a duel. Not necessarily win, but at least survive one" he explained loud enough that also Ke could hear, since that explanation could have been useful also for the Blood Carver. The Kaleesh then turned on the saber once again and got in a defensive stance, holding the lightsaber normally instead of the reverse grip. "Now,I want you to try getting through my defences. I won't attack you. I'll simply defend myself."

Somm gulped in deep breaths as the Kaleesh explained about watching your opponent, analysing their weakness to survive the fight. It made sense, though Somm knew that putting it into practise would be a lot harder than it seemed. Eckaaso dropped into a defensive stance and asked Somm to attack him.

Somm ignited his saber again and slipped again into the first stance of soresu, this time blade angled forward parallel with his left arm which he held out in front of himself. He stepped forward with his first attack, swinging the blade over his head and then diagonally down towards the Kaleeshs waist.

Anger was our biggest weakness.

Byron had known that all too well. The fire lit in the padawan’s eyes were more of a reflection of himself rather than a menacing picture to fear. (He remembered the fear in Oren’s eyes when their lightsabers clashed. He hoped that his gare at the Blood Carver hadn’t offered the same emotion behind them.) It was familiar. It was haunting. It was… surprising.

In all honesty, Byron probably should have caught himself up on the Blood Carver’s culture. Though, at the same time, perhaps the padawan should have learned to put their anger aside. Something to talk to Vayla about certainly.

Though, the quicker the anger grew, the more this became a fight rather than a spar.

As their sabers clashed, with the Blood Carver pushing off his legs for an attack, Byron could only guess wasn’t within the rules of a standard training duel.

Using his free hand, Byron released a push strong enough to force the Blood Carver back, but weak enough that he wouldn’t see any major harm (or, most importantly, embarrassment). Given a padawan’s inexperience with the force, Byron assumed that this was a surefire way to disengage. Just as his master had done with him. This battle wasn’t one worth fighting. A year ago? Perhaps. But not now, not like this.

“Extinguish your anger, padawan,” he says, sternly. “I do not wish to send you to the infirmary, but I will if you continue your assault.” Byron himself took a decently sized dash backwards to further the distance between the two of them, pointing the tip of his training saber at the Blood Carver. “Stand. Down.”

Their sabers clashed in another brilliant flash of light as Ke Eoto performed the parry and attempted to push the initiative. The muscles around his eyes tensed once more as the heat of the sabers and brightness, even in training mode, flooded his vision in an overload of senses. It was not anger swimming in his pale blue eyes as they dilated and his brows strained, it was his well as he forced himself to not blink or look away from the overwhelming radiation of light that was a lightsaber blade striking against another. Even as tears welled up in his eyes at the exhausting overexposure, burning as if he was staring into the sun, he fought back against the instincts to look away.

Then Byron's free hand shot up, open palm aimed at the Blood Carver's chest as their sabers locked together. Ke Eoto's pale blue eyes flicked down to the gesture, flinching visibly as he recognized it and feelings rose up within him once more. It was not anger this time but fear and a sense of betrayal when he came to understood what Byron was about to do. Ke Eoto's own free hand rose up reflexively, meeting Byron's an inch away, his own three-fingered palm spread out in an instinct.

However, unlike Byron, he did not call upon the powers of the Force. Partially it was because he was still just a Padawan, and although his upbringing as a Blood Carver made him familiar with ways of blades, his mastery over the Force was not as extensive ass Byron's, therefore he would have been slower on calling upon it. Partially, the Blood Carver wrangled down the feelings raising up within him once more, just as the reflexive anger at the accidental insult was suppressed within him into barely burning embers, so did his fear at this perceived treason was willed into reluctant trust towards Byron. He closed his eyes, letting them rest as serenity washed over him in the face of Byron's telekinetic maneuver, trusting his partner that he would not take advantage of a sparring session to assassinate a padawan, and the other two Jedi in the room, that they would protect him should something like that happen.

Ke Eoto slid back on the training mat as Byron pushed him away, maintaining his posture even as his feet moved along the surface, his claws reflexively digging into the surface and scratching marks into it as they strained to keep him from falling. The Blood Carver's pale blue eyes flickered open as he came to a halt and focused in on Byron once more.

He flicked his lightsaber at Byron's words in a salute to gesture he was concluding current training sequence,

"Emo-tion yet peeas."

The insectoid croaked out to Byron, deactivating his lightsaber in a way to not contest that feelings ran through him during the sparring session. They were all mortal after all, every one of them would feel something during something as intimate as fighting, even Jedi Masters were not above sensations. However, the Blood Carver would claim that he kept his emotions under control instead of allowing them to rule his actions. Although perhaps if he was not slighted during the bout, he would have chosen to try and grapple or throw Byron instead of a strike.

"But perhaps I mis-understood the parameeters of this exercise. I thought we were to show exteent of our skills in close combaat, and that physicaal manoo-vers are accept-ed in spars and combat at laarge, but we were to not use the Foorce in this exceer-size."

The Blood Carver added with whining intonations of his xenos throat and vocal cords forcing out the sentences in Basic. He glanced over Eckaaso with noticeable mixes of confusion, surprise, and sorrow, seeking validation or explanation towards what he did wrong, as to his knowledge he did not stray away from what was permitted by the texts and codices on the lightsaber arts and sparring techniques he studied.

They always used that line. Emotion, yet peace. It was the easiest part of the Jedi Code to abuse as an excuse to justify an outburst. And Byron would know all too well, for he was its biggest exploiter during his tumultuous days as a padawan. (I was in control, he would say. Everything I did was legal.) He could identify inexperience through his own. It was the cycle of life within the Order.

“I felt your fire, I saw it,” he says. An itch of his cheek and a quizzing look followed into his next sentence. “Though, if I am honest. I don’t know why you got so fired up during a training duel, padawan.”

It wasn’t unusual to see an outburst in a training session. Though, that didn’t mean it wasn’t to be controlled. If every beat of rage or anger was to be given a pass in duels, it would be chaos in the Order’s arena. So, disengagements were to be used as necessary. It was one of the reasons Vaapad and Juyo were banned unless they were specific practitioner-on-practitioner situations. Dancing with your emotions, particularly in such a tense situation, was only going to lead to trouble.

If anything, it wasn’t the example to set for everyone else.

“Do not look at Eckaaso for sympathy. You will not find it there,” he says, brows furrowed at the Blood Carver. “If you cannot understand why I had to disengage, perhaps your time is better spent in the libraries, actually understanding the meaning of the Jedi Code.”

He swore he was sounding more like Oren (@TWD26) everytime he spoke. He hated it.

Was naturally drawn to look for guidance and explanation in Eckaaso due to their shared inhuman appearance and similar tribal cultures of their tribal species, traits that Ke Eoto found reassuring to see in other Jedi when surrounded mostly by humans familiar with standard galactic culture. However, before he could hear his fellow alien's stance and tutelage, Byron made his displeasure about Ke Eoto looking towards the Kaleesh known.

Ke Eoto's facial plates tightened into a flat mask over his face, giving only a hint of their usual beak-like elongation as the alien tilted his face to look back to the human with those alien pale-blue eyes. Without the distraction of lightsaber blades assaulting his senses not used to such amounts of light and noise, Ke Eoto found it easier to control his emotions. Any feelings that rose at Byron's words were kept down, hidden under a wash of tranquility as the Blood Carver thought on their meaning and of what transpired.

He bent down at the waist, bowing his tall, unnaturally slender body towards Byron,

"There are ceer-tain sociaal instiincts my kiind are taaught since birth baased on our undeer-staanding of afteerlife. I apoloogize if my tuurmoil against them was foound unner-ving as I coonti-nue to loosen their hoold on me with traai-ning."

Ke Eoto croaked out the words, forcing them through his insectoid vocal cords in the usual elongation of certain sounds and shifting intonations as he straightened up,

"But I agree with asssees-ment that I shoould not continuee in this spaaring exceer-sise. With your permissioon, Masteer Alduun and Masteer Shyn,"

As he said their names, he dipped another bow to each,

"I requeest to be excuused from this areena to find my Master, Vayla Mirana, and seek her coounsel."

He groaned out the words, almost word for word from the manuals, tomes of codes, and codices of the order he loved to read and adhere to in his overzealous stance. Ke Eoto found relief in his gullet as soon as he finished the sentence, speaking in Basic was starting to make his throat sore from time to time.

The Kaleesh glanced briefly at the other two sparring Jedi, and as soon as the situation seemed to heat up, he blocked Somm, parrying his latest blow and muttering a firm "Stop, I need to manage this" he said, and turned to face Ke and Byron. He approached the duo, but didn't interrupt either of them. Once the Blood Carver asked to leave the arena, the Kaleesh raised a hand like to stop the young man.
"Listen. I realize that you may come from a different culture, and that you may have had some particular upbringing. Don't think I haven't noticed how you reacted when both Byron and I complimented any of you. But this doesn't mean that you can't try to hold back your emotions. That sparring session was meant to test both your fighting prowess, and your patience. Admittedly, I haven't ever seen that kind of fighting, I suppose it was something from your culture. But I have to ask you to hold back from using these techniques for the moment. Keep yourself to the base forms, and perhaps in the future you could implement your skills. And, please. Be patient. Keep your ill feelings for yourself. Don't allow your emotions to overwhelm you. As you said, Emotion, yet peace. Remember: letting your emotions overwhelm you, can bring you to the dark side. And don't dare to say that your culture or even mine dictates brutality and similar. I admit, at times I let myself go, but to a point. I'm careful to not exaggerate. Doing so, helps me focusing, and well, kind of enjoying the fight. And calms me."

Somm took a step back and deactivaed his saber. It wasn't his place to comment or step in so he stayed out of it. He sat down and crossed his legs, taking the moment to meditate and shut out the world around him. A calm washed over him and he began to focus on his lighsaber forms in his minds eye.
