DESCRIPTION
The T-65B X-Wing starfighter was a single-seat craft manufactured by Incom Corporation and used most famously by the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. Renowned for its speed and maneuverability in battle, it became the backbone of the Rebel Alliance Starfighter Corps, being both harder hitting and tougher under fire than its main adversary, the mass-produced TIE/LN space superiority starfighter.

Following on from Incom designs produced during the Clone Wars, the T-65B was considered a quantum leap in starfighter technology at the time of its introduction. Equipped with a built-in hyperdrive, a quartet of medium laser cannons, warhead launchers and even deflector shields, the X-Wing got its name from its trademark "strike foils," an innovation which had been trialed on earlier starfighters but which arguably reached its mature form on the X-Wing. The S-foils opened when the ship went into combat, improving both the craft's thermal performance, as with previous designs, as well as the firing positions of the four cannons, which were mounted on the wingtips.

To save space, the T-65B used an onboard astromech to handle many systems, including hyperspace calculations. This in itself was not new, but the fact that the X-Wing had a built-in hyperdrive rather than an external hyperdrive sled or ring was. The downside, of course, was that the X-Wing could not run most of its systems without an astromech plugged into the dorsal socket; many who flew the type grew attached to their droid co-pilots, however.

Though initially offered to the Galactic Empire, the X-Wing was rejected by the Imperial military. Incom sold the type on the open market for a time, and eventually large numbers were acquired by the Rebel Alliance, becoming the movement's mainstay fighter. As a result, Incom was quickly "Imperialized," but not before the Alliance had set up X-Wing production facilities of its own. An icon of the Galactic Civil War, the T-65B remained in frontline service into the New Republic years, eventually being replaced by the more sophisticated T-70 X-Wing, its direct descendant. Many have since ended up on the open market, and some remain in service even over a century later.
