DESCRIPTION
The R3 series is a model of astromech droid manufactured by Industrial Automaton. The successor the the company's best-selling R2-series droids, the R3 features - in theory - superior capabilities to the older model, including a more advanced cognitive unit and various sub-systems which improve its computational power, including a dedicated astrogation co-processor.

R3s are barrel-shaped droids, nearly identical to R2 units save for the head dome, which is made of transparent plastex in order to show off the droid's advanced central processing unit. Locomotion is provided by tripod leg arrangement, with each leg containing a wheel. These wheels can be magnetized to adhere to most metallic surfaces. R3 units are equipped with a myriad of sensors and tools, considered more than adequate to handle any task they are assigned; R3s can communicate directly with and run diagnostics on myriad computer systems, as well as affect physical repairs and calibrations even to complex drive systems and other machines. Despite this, they are compact, just a hair under a meter tall, slightly smaller than their R2 predecessors.

Like most astromech droids, R3s can function as a substitute for a dedicated navicomputer aboard hyperdrive-equipped starships. With their advanced computer brains, they are generally better at more cerebral tasks than their R2 predecessors, and are a popular choice for slicers in need of a mobile computer access tool/assistant.

R3-series droids cannot speak most organic languages, although they can understand them. They vocalize in droidspeak, or through text when connected to an external network or vehicle. R3 units have a genial and chummy personality, by default, but are quick to develop more distinct personalities, especially if not subjected to regular memory wipes.

Though no longer manufactured by IA, R3s can still be found in some parts of the Galaxy; they are not as common as R2 units, however. In general, R3s were not sold to general consumers; the type was intended for sale to military customers, high-tech government agencies and corporations. Most R3s on the open market today are some form of surplus, and often have interesting stories to tell if they have not been memory-wiped.
